The less traversed path comes with unique challenges that change the way we think.
The guest of this week, Jaya Vaidhyanathan, has stretched her boundaries to show that we can accomplish whatever we set our minds to.
Jaya was listed in the top 10 most influential women in tech and has also been named India's most trustworthy CEO.
She started her career as a computer science graduate.
She wanted to work with people rather than systems, so she studied finance and strategy in an MBA program at Cornell University in USA.
During her MBA, investment banking caught her interest, so she joined CIBC Oppenheimer as their Director.
She then got into technology shaping up large deals in USA for HCL Technologies.
After that, she moved to management consulting where she worked on setting up large businesses for Accenture clients.
Then, she joined Standard Chartered Bank as Executive Vice President heading global technology and strategic transformation.
A personal situation made her think of the next stage of her career, and she thought of bringing all her corporate experiences to build something valuable for the banking industry to help the bankers. And her entrepreneurial journey started.
Today she is CEO at BCT Digital and Independent Director at UTI Mutual Funds.
During her career, she was primarily driven by demands on a personal and professional front.
Her passion for exploring and learning became apparent in her shifts in jobs in quite different ways.
Her main objective is to use technologies to impact human lives.

He then joined Gartner, which turned out to be the best decision of his life. He got an inside-out view of the entire market.
That's where he fell in love with cybersecurity.
He switched a lot of roles and did a number of side hustles before starting his own firm in cybersecurity.

We often find it difficult to pursue our passions.
This week's guest Fatema Kudrati shares how a medical school graduate got into child tutoring, development, and NLP training.
In 2004, her son was diagnosed with ADHD, and that's when she realized it's not a learning difficulty, it's a teaching difficulty, and all brains can learn.
She then started helping neurodivergent kids to build self-esteem and self-confidence in themselves.
Initially, she served as a mentor for Toastmasters Gravels Club in Kuwait.
After moving to Australia, she opened the Ringwood branch of Kip McGrath Education Centre.
And then there was no looking back.
Today she also teaches NLP concepts that helped her to be the master of her own mind, speed reading, mind mapping, and the art of public speaking.

Establishing your own company can be a little intimidating at times.
Shifting to a new country is often challenging.
Isn't it?
Naheed dealt with all of it and is now a Transformational Learning and Development Consultant and a Co-Founder of Futurwits.

While re-establishing themselves in a new country, they faced many challenges.
In all the challenging times she focused upon 3 simple rules, which were:
She works on aligning your purpose with your job and limiting the barriers to accepting change.
With less than 3 years under her belt, her business has expanded to 16 countries, won 5 awards, and been a finalist at the Gulf Capital SME Awards.

Success leaves clues.
It's intriguing how a Chef can become CEO of an airline.
Not only that, Koustab became an authority in starting full-service airlines from scratch in the Build-Operate-Transfer model.
As a hotel management graduate, Koustav started as a chef and grew rapidly into leadership positions in the hospitality industry.

That's where he learned about the airlines business. Again, with his dedication and hard work, he grew rapidly in ranks; he was given the responsibility to expand the airline outside India.
After Sahara airlines got sold to Jet airways, by another twist of fate, he was invited to start the MDLR airlines. And he hasn't looked back since then.
He has built 9 airlines so far in the Build-Operate-Transfer model and 2 more are in the pipeline.
There is a lot to learn from his journey.

I will have no regret in life if I fall dead right now...
It was 2012 and I had just acquired my Personal Trainer certification. I needed someone as a guinea pig to hone up my newly learned skills.
That's when Dr. Bhuvan Unhelkar trusted me and took the risk.😄
We were friends for a couple of years by now.
We started to meet at 5 am every morning in the field to jog and perform a series of exercises.
During one of those huffing and puffing moments, I vividly recall Bhuvan saying "you know what Ehsan, I will have no regret in life if I fall dead right now...."
Seriously? I had not known anybody who could say that. I still don't know anybody other than him.
Coming to the topic, Bhuvan has had an incredible professional life as well.
He started just like most IT professionals way back in 1982 The last IT job he had was that of the Product Development Manager at Dow Jones in Sydney.
Today he is a professor of Information Technology in Florida, USA.
He is a thought leader and a prolific author with 24 books in his name.
He is the founder of 2 companies.
He is an engaging keynote speaker and trainer.
Currently, his areas of focus are Big Data, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, and more... [I am afraid I can't contain his all interests in one sentence]
He ran his first full marathon at the age of 61 this year
In this episode of the EmpoweringIndianExpats podcast, he talks about - Value of education - Career growth strategies - it's not always vertical upward, horizontal growth could be equally rewarding - Current industry trends - Learnings from his journey - Power of Community and Volunteering - Mindfulness and power of living in the moment - Importance of doing nothing in this modern busy lifestyle - Mentorship - People and books that influenced his thoughts and decisions - Beautiful discovery of zero - no starting point
It surprises me to this day how he is so productive and still finds time for friends.
I am honored and privileged to bring his wisdom out to the world. Listen to the whole conversation ...
Get Inspired | Learnt a thing or two | Do Something great It's only one life and more than 90% of us is still unused potential😞

Failed in 12th exam …
The same year Ajay Unni built software for a school that printed 3000 report cards for year 11 and 12 students.
How did that happen?
Much later, he shared his story in LinkedIn article “The joy of failure” https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/20140603131707-5693854-the-joy-of-failuer/
That one freelancing work turned into a company with 100 employees.
Yes, he did pass his year 12 next year and also graduated while building his business.
Ajay ran his company from the age of 16 to 26 and then sold it to one of his clients.
Worked for World bank for a couple of years in India.
Then came to Australia for his masters.
Someone who had once failed in year 12 was chosen to be the graduate speaker of his class in his masters.
From freelancer to a CEO of a software company to selling it to one of his clients. From CEO to an IT consultant to a master’s student. And, then from a project manager to CEO again.
He shares what worked and what did not work in his journey of building a career and business.
He also talked about his breakthrough moments, successes and support he got from various people.
I was touched by his humbleness, authenticity, and willingness to share the vulnerabilities and challenges he faced at various stages of life.
He is an interesting storyteller too, so you will get a visual picture of situations he describes.
My #1 takeaway was to become comfortable with uncertainty – that’s where the magic happens!
Listen to the conversation – it’s full of inspiration, fun and learnings

Semi-retired at 30!
When most students are stressed about finding a job, Amir Qutub was putting the foundation for building his dream. That was 2014.
Today, Aamir’s company Enterprise Monkey, which he started with AUD 2000 in 2014, is a well-oiled machine with 200+ staff serving clients in 5 countries. And, he doesn’t need to spend more than a couple of hours a day in the business.
So, he used his free time in investing in tech start-ups – 7 so far. He is also the co-founder of 4 start-ups.
He also recently launched another business called Mentor Monkey. This is his way of giving back – mentoring professionals and entrepreneurs succeed in career and in business.
How can someone who moves to Australia for study and within 10 years transforms his life and also impacts many other lives by being an employer, investor and mentor!!!
But if you think it was all smooth, not true. You’ve got to listen to this conversation with host Ehsan Ali.
Aamir pitched more than 200 business owners before someone agreed to give him work - that was a company repairing bins for the city council.
Within 2 years of starting his business, Aamir’s business got in trouble. He was just 27 and in $100,000 debt.
Aamir shares his strategy of how he came out this difficult time – mentors’ advice, changing the revenue model, filtering out the clients, and much more.
He also shares his marketing strategy to attract the right clients and most importantly putting the right processes in place which he believes was the game-changer.
One of the key learnings from this episode is “ there is no right point to start and there is no right knowledge level to start ”.
**You can’t go wrong in building and growing your business if you follow what Aamir shared in this conversation.

No capital, no connection, no experience...
Just the Passion and the Will to do...
This week's story is all about that.
Manasi moved to Amsterdam from New Delhi with her husband.
Prior to this move, Manasi had Corporate (Auditor with Deloitte) and Social Sector experience.
Rather than looking for a job, she experimented with inviting people at home for sharing authentic meal.
From the success of one event to another and to another, she realised it could be a business.
In last 3 years, her platform "Tasty Talks" has hosted hundreds of offline and online events.
Think of her business model as "Airbnb of Food".
I really liked her statement "your venture is kind of an extension of yourself"!
And, her mantra for success "Do not let the dull times bog you down, just keeping going"
Listen to her story, it might trigger some ideas if you are contemplating starting something of your own.

Manishi comes from extensive corporate experience working with likes of PWC, KPMG, Essar and Tech Mahindra.
His journey into entrepreneurship has been interesting.
He recalls Steve Jobs statement "we can only connect the dots backward"
After he left his senior IT executive job, he started to consult with SMEs.
During that time, a relative of his from India who was in the food business and had already expanded to the UK requested Manishi for a bit of research in Australia.
He did but nothing concrete came out.
However, something interesting happened at the back of this research.
A manufacturer offered to supply Ghee knowing Manishi was an Indian.
With no knowledge in the food distribution business,
What made Manishi get into Ghee distribution?
How did he do market research?
How did he price his product?
How did he differentiate his product from existing brands?
How did he manage branding, packaging and distribution?
What challenges did he face in the initial days?
Did he have to borrow money?
What mistakes did he do?
Did he have failures?
What did he learn from those failures?
Manishi answers all of these questions.
Based on his 6-7 years of experience,
he also shares a step-by-step strategy to start any fast-moving consumer goods distribution business.
He believes it's the perfect time to be part of the local supply chain as the global distribution channels are broken due to Covid.
He also talks about entrepreneurial mindset, resources for success and his influences.

Our guest this week is proof that you don't need a university degree to succeed in business. In spite of episodes of bullying and depression throughout school and dropping out of school in year 11, Esha has built an organisation that recently got recognised as the third best place to work across Australia and New Zealand.
Launched her startup in Aged Care sector at 24 by herself that has grown into 800 carers and 75 full-time office staff.
I ask her about how she won over depression, what motivated her to get in the business of her own, how she scaled a 1 person startup to leading such a large team, challenges she faced along the journey, the learnings she has had, the strategies that worked and did not work, her influences.. and many more powerful practical insights to build a powerful career or business and a balanced fulfilling life.
Thank you for stopping by! If you are an Indian living abroad, feeling stuck in a dead-end 9 to5, or a job or business that's not helping you reach your full potential, you are in the right place. Your host Ehsan Ali is a longtime IT professional living in Sydney.
I had left India with big dreams but without realising I had settled for an average 9-5. After following this routine for 10 years, when I looked back, I didn't find anything significant to feel proud of. When I projected my life 10, 20, 30 years ahead of me and imagined living the same routine, I got terrified. When I tried to escape the mediocrity trap, I couldn't find enough help and encouragement. So finally, I decided to launch this podcast as an endeavor to learn from highly successful Indian Expats who are willing to share their journey, strategies and learnings with the rest of us.
Every Tuesday, I bring in the story of an inspiring Indian expat who either successfully transitioned into entrepreneurship or climbed up really high in corporate career. So if you are like me who is keen to create more impact and more income beyond just making a living, but missing that nurturing environment, join me on the mission, by subscribing to the podcast and spreading the word to other like-minded Indians living abroad. Also, connect with me directly on LinkedIn or Facebook. https://www.linkedin.com/in/alimohammadehsan https://www.facebook.com/AliEhsanMohammad/
