Today’s podcast episode is all about what we can do as teacher mama’s when we feel like our future is uncertain and we feel a lack of control. Springtime brings (hopefully) a time when we find out our job assignments for the following school year. Most of us most likely hope we are staying in the same spot. But we also know that might not happen.

I am in a season of uncertainty myself. I’m unsure what next school year will bring. And I am not a patient person. It is really hard for me to wait and see how things will turn out. It is also hard for me to just trust that everything will work out. BUT it is also really important to me that I am present and soaking up the remainder of the current school year. So I used a 3 step process to gain back my control and feel more at peace.

This episode is for you if:

  • Do you feel overwhelmed at the end of the school year?
  • Do you feel like your future is out of your control?
  • Are you thinking you might be switching grade levels, buildings, or positions over the summer?
  • Do you want to manage and control this current situation so you can feel present and at peace?

Keep going, I promise it will all be worth it because we are going to share some things that may help this process even more for you today!

We have both been there before. Dealing with the tantrums and the 10,000 times they leave their room saying they can’t sleep, or need water, or something scary is in the closet, or…

Exercise helps you sleep. It gives us endorphins (the happy hormone) which also helps reduce stress. This is often a big reason why you can't fall asleep at night. Exercise also helps increase the natural release of melatonin in our bodies which if you listened to previous episodes, you know, helps us fall asleep at night.

In this episode you will learn:

  • How to squeeze exercise into your busy day
  • Different places to find your quick exercise routines
  • Options for Before Bed Exercise

I remember the time when my kids were a bit younger and wrestling with the, “how much work am I actually going to make them do around the house” I knew their school load was going to get heavier and felt bad for making them go to school and then come home and do more work. Then my husband and I were finding it harder and harder to keep up the house chores on our own and knew something had to change. If you are in this headspace right now, this is going to be a great episode for you and the kids. We are going to go through some bible verses about chores, laziness, messiness, cleanliness and even a little bonus verse at the end. So stick around if you need this little reminder today about what God has to say about our kids and work, you're gonna love it!

If you are like me, I always say I’m going to take time to rest and have me-time during the break because I’m not working. I should have plenty of time, right? And then the end of break comes and I’m wondering where in the world the time went and realizing I did absolutely nothing for myself. And I had zero alone time. How in the world does that happen?

It is the week before a long break! This is both good and challenging. This is a week we tend to see more behaviors, less motivation to complete work, and scattered attendance. We are really good at planning fun activities into the week, but what if we are also intentional about scheduling different forms of rest for ourselves and our students?

Hi Teacher Mama! Have you ever left school thinking, oh gosh, “now I have to go home and try to have patience for my own kids”, or “I’m leaving one mess here to go home to another” or “will I ever just get some me-time- some time to sit and do what my body needs me to do?” We hear you! We’ve been there and we know what it feels like to leave one stressful situation and go to another. Today we are going to talk about some reasons why this has become the norm for you and how to fix it.

We all know that parenting is a never ending job. When we are sick we can call off from work, but we can’t call off from being a parent. Sometimes we can get help, and that is great. But most of the time, as moms, we are the last ones in the family to get sick. Everyone else has had the illness and then we get hit with it. Which is actually something really cool. If we are taking care of our hormones in our menstruation years our bodies are literally designed to have a better immune system so that we can take care of our families and babies. But inevitably we do still get sick from time to time. And if you are like me and so many other teacher mamas out there, you can still feel like you need to be and do it all when you are sick. Today’s episode is your permission to slow down when you aren’t feeling well.

Tomorrow is Halloween. And I have gotten caught up in the negative headspace around halloween being on a school night this year.

But I realized that the way in which I think about Halloween this year will end up predicting how the event and following days actually go. I don’t want to feel stressed all week long. I want to choose to make this a joyful week not just for the kids, but for myself as well. So let’s chat about how to make this happen.

Hi Teacher Mama! Ashley here. If you are listening to this episode today, maybe you’ve never really been involved in anything Faith related or you have but you’ve had a bad experience and kind of gave up on that Faith. Maybe you are neither and are sitting pretty good faith wise right now. Well, this episode is for all of you. I had a major download on Sunday after a very frustrating experience at a new church and I wanted to share because this is not the first time this has happened to me. I figured, if this has happened to me so many times, it has probably happened to others and it can feel very discouraging when you are trying to develop that relationship with Jesus. I also want to add in here that, if you ever have your Full-On-Teacher-Hat on when listening to these episodes, (you know, that one where we aren’t allowed to talk about God during the school day). I want you to remove that hat now and any time we broach this subject here. We don’t just speak to the teacher on this show, we speak to the mom and the wife and the friend, and Jesus should be present in all those areas of our life, yes even in school. Just because we can’t talk about him, doesn't mean we can't act like him. I really hope my story today brings you hope if you have struggled with your faith in the past or is just a reminder to everyone that no one is perfect- we all sin, and we can’t let people who sin against us be the reason to interrupt that relationship with Jesus.

We all want to feel less stress by just having less things to be stressed about. But a lot of times we can’t control the events that happen that make us feel stressed. What we do have control over is our thoughts, which then bleeds into our feelings. So how can we have more control over our thoughts and feelings so the stress can more easily roll off our backs rather than get stuck in our minds and bodies making us feel tired (maybe even exhausted), crabby, irritable, physically run down, and so many other symptoms. In just 5-10 minutes a day, maybe even while you are still lying in bed, you can make a significant impact in the way your body handles stress. I can’t wait to dive into this today, because this is something I have added to my own routine about 3 times a week, and I can feel the positive difference it makes in my ability to treat myself with compassion and patience when a stressor comes my way.

Today we talk about our thoughts on 8 different ways to say “no” without necessarily just outright saying NO. The 8 different strategies come from the book “Essentialism” by Greg McKeown. So, in today’s Book Talk episode, we talk about the 8 different ways discussed in the book and different examples of how we have used some of the strategies ourselves.

https://www.amazon.com/Essentialism-Disciplined-Pursuit-Greg-McKeown/dp/0804137382

  1. Use an awkward pause
  2. Use a “no, but”
  3. “let me check my calendar and get back to you”
  4. Use an email autoresponder
  5. Use the “yes, what should I reprioritize” method.
  6. Use a bit of humor.
  7. Use the “you are welcome to X. I am willing to Y”
  8. “I can’t do it, but X might be interested”

We give you everything you need to set up a routine using a chart or powerpoint/slides so your kid(s) can do what needs to be done without constant reminders from you. This episode is all about one simple thing to start having less behaviors and more structured, quality, joy filled time with your kids.

Ashley and Roberta talk about how mommy and me time has been a game changer in their households over the last couple months.

When our kids' emotional love tank isn't full, behaviors start to arise which makes it even harder for connection. Start minimizing these by building up that relationship with your own kiddos by having 10-15 minutes of quality 1:1 time with them in the morning or when you get home from school. Your child will feel loved, supported and important which then makes giving directions to them, for how you want the rest of the night to go, so much easier.

Another benefit to go alongside learning their love language is also figuring out their learning style. If your kiddo is having a hard time in school, pay attention to the activities they pick and how they learn while doing them with you. Ashley has found out through this time that her son is ALL hands on, so that will make it easier to support him through his school years at home.

Action item- it's your turn!

*pick a time your going to schedule in mommy/daddy and me time

*Talk to your kids about this time and why you feel it's important

*Come up with a list of things they find enjoyable to help them pick something when it's their turn

Don't forget to share this episode with everyone in your life that needs it either individually or in your stories- don't forget to tag us if you do!

If you try this out- send us a DM and let us know how it goes! We can't wait to hear from you!

Have you ever stopped to think about the reason behind whatever it is you are doing? For example: why might you sit down to watch TV? Is it because it brings you joy? Is it because you are bored? Is it because it is a habit to do so after supper? The reason behind what we are doing matters. Are we doing it to take care of ourselves and others; or are we doing it to suppress our emotions and push away the events of the day?

Take a listen to this short and juicy episode all about the intent behind the behavior.

As the seasons change, so do our routines and schedules. Summer is in full swing and we should not feel guilty about our daily routines getting switched up either.

Roberta and Ashley are talking about what has changed with their daily routines as they are both home with their kids during the day.

Ashley touches on how her son's ADHD tendencies have changed the way she structures their routine charts to keep him more on track.

And they both talk about how they have been spending 10- 15 minutes of quality alone time with each kid to show how they are each special and significant in their lives while offering them choices. It has dramatically improved behaviors in the home and given them good insight as to what each child's primary love language is!

Today we are talking with Alexis Greco, the systems queen! She is the creator of the Rhythmic Home which helps entrepreneur moms create a systematic rhythm for their lives instead of trying to balance everything equally (which is basically impossible with the way she explains it!)

In this episode, we are weaving in the rhythmic home with teacher parents by talking about:

1) How to slow down to speed up and find what's truly important to you.

2) How to move from a 9 month teacher schedule to a 3 month summer schedule.

3) How to split your day into different time parts. This way if one gets completely off, you get an entire do-over that same day!

4) Time blocking vs. Splitting your day up into different parts and also finding ways to communicate your day with your partner.

5) How she does it all...or does she!? Yup that's right, getting help is the new normal- how to delegate the things that you hate doing to live more in alignment.

6) Simple systems and how to involve them in your day at school and at home.

7) How to create clarity in your brain with a mental brain dump and walk through so you can find the areas in your life that need a system attached to them.

AS ALWAYS, don't forget to share this podcast and tag us both if you found value! We are always grateful for you listeners!

This episode is all about why it is important to let our kids “fail” and struggle, instead of automatically stepping in thinking we are helping them. Kids learn so much through productive struggle. Be there to guide them, sympathize with them, and help them when needed. But it is so important to make sure not to cross over the line from helping to doing and taking over.

Kids learn so many great life skills when they are taught it is okay to struggle. Not everything is easy. And when we try something new it most likely won’t be easy. The fear of failure holds so many of us back as adults, so what can we do to help our kids embrace the possibility of failure and teach them skills to continue on when things get challenging?

Outdoor classrooms!? What!?

Today, we chatted with Ashley's good friend Megan Patterson. They met while working in Alaska but something happened while up there that shortened her stay which was a beautiful blessing. Because of this; she established an outdoor based early childhood-8th grade school she has worked so hard to create!

Megan talks all about her struggles in this journey, the challenges and the beauty that it has created for her son and all the twice-exceptional and neurodiverse children in her area.

Not sure what twice exceptional and neurodiverse means? She talks all about that too and how having an outdoor based school for these types of kids helps them thrive.

Is your child struggling in school and you're not quite sure why? This is a great episode to get you to explore other options for them and to maybe even get them tested to see what things you can be doing to help them (oh yea, Megan talks all about that too;) I would also encourage you to check out the Worldmind Nature School website here (https://worldmindnatureschool.com/).

Worldmind Nature School is based out of Colorado but it may get you thinking about other options for your kids if you're not in the Denver area.

We also go deep into why being outside is so important for EVERYONE and how this is such an important part of self- care that a lot of us forget about!

We are talking all about water today! We want to focus on teachers because it seems to us teachers say things like, “I can’t get my water in because, you know, I have to teach.” So we are going to talk about how you can get your water in during the day, why water is so important for us, some easy ways to get it in, how much water we should be getting in in a day, and what other things you can be doing besides just drinking straight up water.

Join us next week when we talk about KIDS and Water.

*(correction)A gallon is 128 oz, not 90 like I was thinking. Roberta found the correct information during our episode

Episode 28: (Interview) Interview with Kaisa Tabor! Alaska Story and Teacher Self-Care

Welcome to our second interview with one of Ashley’s best friends from Alaska! What a treat it was to interview Kaisa! Kaisa taught in Alaska for 5 years in a small village. Her experiences in Alaska have been valuable in continuing to teach now in the lower 48 states. She now teaches in Arizona. She teaches high school English and English as a Second Language. She now teaches in a district that has about 50% of the population coming from Spanish speaking families. We talk about the differences between teaching in a village in Alaska and a rural town in Arizona.

In both places Kaisa has worn more hats than just “teacher”. She has been a coach, team leader, volleyball coach. So how does she find time to care for herself as a busy educator? Kaisa Tabor has so many good idea’s and helpful tips to be able to have self-care and set boundaries for yourself, at home, at school, and with kids and their families.

Seasonal Affective Disorder is depression symptoms that happen around the same time every year - like winter! Here in Minnesota it has been dark more than light for the past few months. AND these past few weeks have mostly been temperatures below zero! This can make it hard to get sunlight and get outside - thus possibly causing SAD symptoms.

Ashley and Roberta talk about some strategies they have tried and used to combat SAD symptoms in this two-part episode!  Look for part 2 next week!

If you are looking for more information about SAD the Mayo Clinic has a great article explaining symptoms and various strategies to try at home, as well as when to seek advice and help from a doctor.

We have such a fun episode for you today with our very first interview!

Ashley met Becky Kevern when they were both teaching in Alaska. We ask Becky all about her experiences teaching there, and how it compares to working in the lower 48 states. Because we are a self-care podcast, we also talk a lot about self-care. How does she fit self-care into her day/week? How does self-care and emotional health play a role in her teaching? How has the different kinds of trauma that she and her students have gone through play a huge part in needing to use self-care?

Whether you're a mom wanting to get some great tips for your own kids at home, or a teacher wanting to know a little more about Alaska, self-care for yourself or your kids in the classroom, or just want to listen to other teachers' teaching experiences this is a great episode for you!

Roberta and Ashley thought it would be fun to chat about how their most recent goals have been going for themselves. They did this not only to help hold themselves accountable; but also, to give you some good ideas for your own life and to let you know you're not alone. Accomplishing your goals doesn't always quite happen within the timeline you wished it would.

Their conversation ended up being more than they though it would as they go off into some amazing tangents on veggies and PERIODS...WHAT!? Yup, you read correctly! Come take a listen for some real chat!

Today’s episode is very special. This solo episode, with me - Roberta -  is talking all about birthdays. Ashley and I both have a lot of family birthdays recently and coming up. My own birthday included. And we thought it would be so fun to take some time to talk about ways we have celebrated birthdays with our kids, students, and ourselves as adults.

We have hit 20 episodes!!!!! We are so excited!

So you've checked out last week's episode and are wondering what yo do with it!?

Ok even if you haven't checked it (although, I suggest you do;) you will get a lot out of this SMART goal episode!

New year, new goals right!? So why not make them goals that you can actually be successful at!?

Let's make them SPECIFIC by asking what, why, who, where and which. Let's make them Measurable by asking how. Let's make them achievable by asking how you can accomplish it by looking at constraints in your life. Let's make it relevant by asking if it's right for you at this time. And Let's make it time-bound by putting a time limit on when you need to reach it by.

I promise that if you make your goals this specific and continue to check in on them, you will be so much more specific at reaching them!

Go make yourself a SMART goal after listening to this episode....and GO!

Have you ever done a calendar audit for the new year? Have no idea what we're talking about? You NEED to listen to this episode because we've got some great tips for reflecting on the past year so you can make this year even better! Stick around to the end to hear Roberta's amazing idea to start incorporating into your audit as well.

The questions you ask yourself while doing your calendar audit:

1)What was it that I did during this month that was a good use of my time, money or energy? 2)What was it that I did during this month that was a waste of my time, money or energy? 3) What did I do this last year that I want to incorporate into this coming again?

Extra questions from Ashley:

4) What was a waste of time or energy that was out of my control that I could change my mindset around to make it more manageable. 5) What was a waste of time, energy or money for me but not the rest of my family? Who could I delegate this to to make it more manageable for me?

Ashley talks solo in this episode about a few good in service trainings she has had that have helped her in the classroom. She also brushes on a program they are doing in school now that isn't going so well and how she has created a bell ringer incorporating all of the good stuff from these trainings to start each class period out on a good note.

There is a secret ingredient all three of these programs, you'll have to listen in to find out how it can be used in the classroom and in the home.

*Correction to the statistic on childhood trauma. The info I found from a few different sites said 25%-50% of all students in the classroom have experiences some form of trauma. I wonder, though, if the statistic is much higher for low income communities like the one we live in and that's where I remember the statistic from.

NO, is a complete sentence!

I know that word alone can make you cringe right up! But practicing the N word over and over is like building up a muscle you never knew was there. For some, saying yes is like word vomit- it just comes out even though our insides are screaming NO "I don't have the time" or "I really don't have interest in doing that".

The problem with the word yes when we don't mean it is that we don't leave time for the things we actually want to say yes to that light us up!

Come listen as we speak specifically to teachers and care givers on why saying NO can mean the difference in a stressed out mess of a holiday season and a joyful one!
