“How do I get my website to rank on page 1 of Google?” That’s the dream, isn’t it?! My guest today, Stephanie Long, has some tips to help make it happen—organically and legitimately.
“If you're a newer website, you're gonna have a lower domain [authority] cuz you're just getting started to build all your links. So don't get discouraged.” —Stephanie Long
You’ll encounter some SEO “experts” who claim they can get to the top of page 1 in a matter of weeks. Please beware of these claims. They requires either paid strategies or black hat methods that will get your site demoted by Google.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
Bonus tip: Stephanie and I both scroll several pages deep into Google to look for sites to click on. The vast majority of people don’t do this. Wanna help other sites boost their rank—and find some awesome content that’s not on page 1? Scroll down to pages 4, 5, 6 and start clicking there. Maybe someone will do it for you, too!

I adore public speaking. But even I still get nervous. Most people have anxiety around speaking—even if they’ve been doing it a long time. And, for introverts, it’s even worse.
Networking, speaking on stage, giving a presentation, or appearing as a guest on a podcast are skills that can be learned. And entrepreneurs have to do these activities to grow our business.
My guest today, Prof. Ryan J. Warriner, shares his years of experience in coaching and training high-level executives to be great speakers.

Ryan J Warriner is a Professor of Communication at McMaster University, Executive Trainer & Coach, Professional Speaker, as well as author of the innovative book, “The Effective Presenter: The Winning Formula for Business Communication.” Additionally, he is the host of the Professionally Speaking Podcast, and a recurring author for both “Thrive Global” and “HR Magazine.”

One of the biggest mistakes is not engaging with other people's accounts, which is essential for brand loyalty and to gain followers. Entrepreneurs often jump into business for themselves without really knowing what to expect. There are myths we may buy into, such as the myth of the overnight success.
Today’s guest, Elizabeth Presher, is the daughter of two entrepreneurs and owns her own agency. In this episode, she shares facts and dispels myths about entrepreneurship, including:
The myth that successful entrepreneurs are only successful because they're talented, when in reality, grit and determination are often what sets them apart.
The myth that starting a business is easy, when in reality, it takes a lot of hard work and dedication.
The myth that overnight success is possible, when in reality, it takes a lot of time, effort, and perseverance to build a successful business.
Elizabeth and I also chat about how to burnout, money, and systems. Some key takeaways: Be patient, focus on your zone of genius, and be intentional.

Women make mistakes when it comes to investing. Find out what they are! In this episode you will learn: 1. The difference between day-trading and long-term investing. 2. The importance of having a financial advisor who is a good fit for you. 3. The importance of saving for retirement, even if you're not sure when you'll retire. "I think that it's like any profession that you have; you have good advisors and bad advisers. You have good doctors and you have bad doctors. And one of the main things is finding that person that you trust." Lisa Krall is the founder of Park Avenue Wealth Management. She has 19 years of experience guiding clients and their financial well being. She assists them in financial planning based on their phase of life so they can get the most from their investments. — Connect with Lisa: https://www.parkavewealth.com/ (https://www.parkavewealth.com/) https://www.linkedin.com/in/wealthadvisorlisakrall/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/wealthadvisorlisakrall/) — Highlights: [00:01:00] - Lisa Krall is the founder of Park Avenue Wealth Management. Lisa has 19 years of experience guiding clients and their financial well being. Lisa is also the recipient of the 2021 Westmoreland County Athena Award. [00:01:53] - A lot of women are afraid to get actively involved in making investments because of negative media portrayals of the industry. Many people are reluctant to work with financial advisors because of bad information about them. Finding the right advisor is the most important factor in choosing a financial advisor. [00:04:18] - A lot of people don't know how to find the right financial advisor. Women often think they have to be good at everything. Having money set aside when you do work, even if your spouse is the primary breadwinner, adds to the self worth of the family. [00:10:25] - Some of the biggest mistakes women make in investing are being afraid to do it and not understanding the long-term goals. Women and self-employed people tend to put themselves last. They tend to put everybody else in front of them, whether the kids or a spouse. Women are typically the ones taking time away from work to be the caregiver. [00:14:22] - There is a difference between day-trading and long-term investing. Financial advisers are looking at the big picture and diversified investing. When you start a new job, get those retirement accounts set up right away. The longer you have to invest, the better returns you get on your money. There are plans designed for small-business owners that are inexpensive to run and that you can put away more than you could in other types of accounts. You can get the tax deferral, you can get a tax deduction as the employee and the employer, and you could do a small amount through the course of the year. [00:20:12] - As a woman, it's important to advocate for yourself in the workplace and compare your salary to other people in the area. Life insurance and estate planning are also important for women to consider when making decisions about their investments and life insurance policies. — Check out this episode https://www.angelakellysmith.com/podcast/how-women-can-make-better-investing-decisions-with-lisa-krall (on the website) Loved this episode? When it comes to marketing your product or service, it’s essential to understand the behavior of your ideal customer or client. And that’s getting harder to do, according to professor of marketing and industry consultant Michael Solomon. Author of the book The New Chameleons: How to Connect with Consumers Who Defy Categorization, Michael discusses how it’s harder to guess at our customers’ and clients’ behavior today because they’ve become so difficult to categorize in a neat little box. Gone are the days of labeling someone as a Yuppie or soccer mom and knowing exactly what that means. We have dig deeper to understand our customers and clients. We have to listen harder and ask more questions. And we have to accept their ownership over our brands. No longer can we dictate that our brand means this or that. As Michael notes, the lines have blurred between producer and consumer. Why is selling so scary? Really, it comes down to fear of rejection. We tend to believe that if someone says “no” to our service what they really mean is that they don’t like us. But in this discussion with Chrystal Robinson of Kolor Addikt, we talk about how we need to approach sales with a different mindset—and a specific strategy, one that helps our pre-sold would-be clients say “yes.” Chryssy and I discuss what steps you need to take before, during, and after your sales calls to dramatically improve your success rate in sales. We talk about the psychology of sales. And we discuss the importance of staying in touch before the sales call and following up after the sales call. In the preview to the interview, I share how I used to do sales calls, why that format sucks, and how you can do it better. By the end of this episode, you’ll have a strategy for sales calls and follow-up that will significantly increase your success rate. — Find Chryssy at https://koloraddikt.com (https://koloraddikt.com) Find Chryssy on Instagram https://instagram.com/koloraddikt (https://instagram.com/koloraddikt) https://www.angelakellysmith.com/podcast/the-only-sales-strategy-youll-ever-need-with-chrystal-robinson (Link to this episode) — Want to chat about website design, marketing, or starting your own podcast? https://angelakellysmith.hbportal.co/schedule/62f651e260814a3957df1205 (Schedule a time here). What’s love got to do with branding? More than you may realize! Today I’m interviewing Dr. Aaron Ahuvia, author of The Things We Love: How Our Passions Connect Us and Make Us Who We Are, and the leading expert on brand love. We discuss whether it’s possible for us to love—really love—things. Dr. Ahuvia walks us through the evolution of love and how loving things can actually make sense. We talk about the main reasons people fall in love with brands. And we discuss some practical applications of brand love for smaller brands. I cannot recommend Dr. Ahuvia’s book enough. What would you do if someone started badmouthing you on social media? How would you respond if someone set off a firestorm about you in a Facebook group? Would you be prepared? As a solo entrepreneur or small-business owner, you’ve probably never considered a crisis communication plan. I mean, what could possibly happen that would make you need one? It’s not as if you’re United Airlines having to respond to a customer getting beaten up on a flight! But there are issues that can pop up that we have to respond to. Many people think of traditional sales as being pushy. But today’s guest, John Abbott, shares how you don’t have to be pushy in sales and how you can create massive profits by building giving into the core of your business. We discuss the gift of sharing your unique voice with the world, how we learn by failing, and how spiritual awakening can transform your business. John shares how giving away a seat in his once flailing program resulted in his program selling out. We discuss the law of reciprocation and how we can make giving a normal, regular part of business—as opposed to making it a once-a-year thing. And John shares tips for accommodating clients who are ready to learn what you’re teaching but for whom the money is a real stretch. John shows us how to help people who are ready to commit and would benefit from a place of giving. I have such a treat for you today! I’m chatting with singer/songwriter and long-time activist Elaine Romanelli about easy ways to make activism a part of your everyday life. No, you don’t have to march on Washington, if that’s not your thing! Elaine explains how activism is like a pedicure. You can get by and just cut your nails, or you can go for the full spa treatment and totally nourish yourself. Take a listen to find out what she means!
As an entrepreneur herself, Elaine talks about how important it is to outsource as much as you can in both your business and your daily life. She discusses self-care and “other-care”—not where we’re taking care of others, but rather where we have other people take care of us. Imagine that!
We discuss how exhausted everyone is from the constant barrage of bad news, where this thing doesn’t get reported because it’s not as “bad” as that thing. And we chat about developing a system of replenishment, in contrast to the usual escapism that ends up depleting us even more.
Elaine wants organizations, politicians, and us to stop thinking of activism as an emergency situation because it’s something we have to be in for the long haul. Thus the focus of this episode: Finding easy ways to build activism into your daily life… in a way that fills you up rather than dragging you down.

Do you spend more time acquiring customers than keeping the ones you’ve got? Do you know the value of the clients you have vs the would-be clients you’re trying to get?
Today I’m interviewing Phil Coley on customer retention, why it’s so important, and some tips to keeping more of the customers you already have. We also chat about some of the differences between sales and marketing and how your products and services sell themselves when your marketing is on point.
Phil Coley is a British entrepreneur dividing his time between his home in France and business interests in the UK. Phil has a background in sales and marketing for over 30 years, from starting selling advertising for a regional newspaper to consultancy positions with some of the UK`s leading contact centers.
Phil actually became a very young entrepreneur at the age of 12, creating a local free ads flyer in his local village and selling advertising space. The flyer had to be put together with sticky letters and photocopied – no digital publishing in those days!
Over the years Phil has set up and sold businesses, experienced highs and lows—even losing it all. Today Phil works closely with his business partner, Mark Pearce, building successful businesses and working with other business owners to scale up growth and ultimately create successful businesses.

Do you have a system in place to care for your customers or clients—starting from the moment they contact you about working with you? It’s so important that your customers know that you care about them so that they remain customers and refer other customers to you. Let’s learn some strategies! Today I’m interviewing Founder & CEO of Equilibria, Inc., Alicia Butler Pierre on creating a best-in-class customer service experience.
At one point, we discuss how customer acquisition costs more than customer retention. I got the stats wrong. I was under. So, here are the correct ones. It can cost 5 times more to acquire a new customer than to keep a customer. And 92 percent of people are more likely to buy when they are referred to a product or service by a trusted source. (I say in the podcast that it’s 70 to 80 percent.) Ideally, you’ll spend time doing both customer acquisition and retention, of course. But the point here is that you’ve got to create an excellent customer-service experience so that customers stick with you. This will both save you money and make you more money in the long run.

Thinking about creating a digital course or community site? It can be overwhelming! In this episode, I break the process down into the exact steps I took when creating the Women Podcasters Academy—my program that contains a digital course, online community, and weekly live sessions.
When I created my first digital course in 2014, I built a membership site from scratch on my own website after I was dissatisfied with other digital course platforms. This time, I tested out three platforms and picked one that I loved. Did not want to build my own again!
If you’re getting ready to start a digital course or community site, this episode will give you the detailed steps you need to make it happen much more easily than struggling to figure it out all on your own.

When you start to design a new website, there are several things you can do ahead of time to make the process go smoother and faster—whether you DIY it or hire a professional designer. Jumping in without preparing these items first will lead to frustration and a waste of time. For example, what do you do when your text is too long for the placeholder text in a template? And what about when your images are the wrong dimensions for the placeholder images?
In this episode, I walk you through everything you’ll need to prepare in advance to make the website design and building process so much easier—for you or for your designer. There’s even a downloadable Essential Checklist for Creating a New Website. Go through these steps now so that you can really focus on your design and build later!

In today’s episode, I’m chatting with 2-time TEDx speaker, podcast host, and certified career coach Nikki Innocent on imposter syndrome and success that’s not designed for you—that is, success that was created to fit one mold and likely doesn’t fit you you.
We also discuss what it means to be “other” or feel like you’re “in between.” Nikki tells us how her mission is to share stories of (mostly) women are in the in-between so they can be fully themselves and inspire other people to live truly authentically.
We talk about the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion at all levels and how imposter syndrome is not a problem for individuals to fix within themselves, but rather a systemic issue to be approached from a grander scale. For more information on that, listen to my podcast called “The Systemic Problem of Imposter Syndrome and Tips for Freelancers.”

With the Supreme Court overturning nearly 50 years of abortion rights last week, I just couldn’t carry on with business as usual on today’s podcast. So, I’m joined in this episode by three awesome women to discuss how to turn our rage at this situation into positive action.
Chanae Jackson, Brooke Kehr, and Gwen Thompson share their reactions to the SCOTUS ruling, their fears about what’s coming in the future, and what they’re doing to help reverse this downward spiral. They all give powerful suggestions.
Chanae is a professional activist who gives us a clear look into how the local power system looks, as well as racial disparities and white women’s role in systemic racism. She’s the author of Yeah, I Said It, I Don’t Give a D.A.M.N.
Please consider donating to the National Network of Abortion Funds and to the Florida Forward Coalition, where Chenae works.

In this episode, I’m interviewing Bret Shuford, the CreativeLife Coach and the founder of the CreatiVisibility mentor program. Bret and I are discussing content creation, imposter syndrome, social media, and becoming an influencer in your field.
I’m using a new system (Riverside FM) to record podcasts, and, as wonderful as the system is and as much fun as Bret and I had, I decided to share the video of the podcast on my website, as well as the audio. Enjoy!
Bret shares some awesome insights and tips. I love his Disneyland analogy for branding. He talks about how to make sharing on social media a habit instead of a production. (Raising my hand here!) And he gives great advice on creating multiple pieces of content from one larger piece—or one large event. We also discuss how marketing can be fun and not “sleazy.” Yes, it really can!
You absolutely must follow Bret on Instagram.. Check him out on YouTube. And listen to the podcast (or watch the video!) to hear all of his fabulous suggestions!

In this episode, I’m discussing what a marketing strategy plan is, why you need one, and how to create one. You normally see marketing strategies and marketing plans as two separate things. I’m combining them into one document to make it easier for you.
A marketing strategy is the overall approach to communicating with your audience and turning them into paying clients. A marketing plan is how you will put your marketing strategy into action. Your marketing plan contains action steps that help you achieve the goals of your marketing strategy.
I’m discussing what you need to know about your ideal client, your competition, your service, and your client’s motivation. I discuss how to promote your content and how to plan your ads. I also give an example of steps you can take to market a high-end course.

In this episode, I discuss rebranding your business, when you should do it, and how to get started. I discuss the cons of rebranding, walk you through how to do a brand audit, and tell you how to spot opportunities to differentiate yourself from the competition.
Rebranding your business is the process of changing how your business is perceived by your audience. Those changes usually include a new logo and website. They may also include a new name, tagline, colors, fonts, visual assets, messaging, copy, and possibly even new services.
You might need to rebrand when you’re embarrassed of your brand, when your brand isn’t really different from your competition, when your brand is confusing, or when your brand develops a negative perception.
A brand audit is an exercise that gives you a snapshot of the state of your current brand. The brand audit will help you figure out what exactly needs to be changed during your rebrand.

Positive thinking as a solution for our problems seems to be everywhere. When we experience a failure, loss, or some other difficulty, people may tell us, “It could be worse” or “you’ll get ‘em next time.” Not only does this silver-lining thinking not help us, it makes us suppress how we really feel. It creates a disconnect between us and that other person. It makes us feel alone. And it causes stress in our bodies.
In this episode, I’m discussing the pursuit of happiness, positive thinking, and how too much positive thinking can turn into toxic positivity. Toxic positivity is the pressure to pursue happiness at all costs, no matter what the circumstances. I’ll be sharing articles, studies, my personal experiences, some comments from Facebook friends and connections, and suggestions for what you can do instead of wallowing in negative thinking or succumbing to toxic positivity. I’ll also be interviewing my friend Denise Dee about how she helps her clients experience a full range of emotions through her writing course called Tell Your Story.

Creating a business strategy will require some time and effort upfront. But it’s totally worth it. Then you won’t be scrambling to figure out your prices. You won’t be wondering how to achieve your goals. And you won’t be trying to decide how to talk about what you do in a way that gets people to hire you.

In this podcast, I discuss what imposter syndrome is, its effects on the individual, whether it’s actually a pathology, its systemic origins, and what we freelancers can do about it.
I interview my buddies from the Geek Girl Soup podcast and my Millennial daughter about how imposter syndrome is more of a systemic problem than an individual issue. I discuss Ruchika Tulshyan and Jodi-Ann Burey’s 2021 Harvard Business Review articles on imposter syndrome. And I share some tips for freelancers to deal with imposter syndrome.
My Geek Girl Soup buddies and I discuss topics such as overcoming feeling like a fraud as a small-business owner, feeling like you don’t belong as a Black woman in spaces traditionally held by white people, and how President Biden’s potential nominees for Supreme Justice (Black women) must be feeling in light of all the vitriol against them.
My daughter, Camille, and I discuss topics such as feeling like a fraud in the art world, the pressure artists feel to create commercial art, how there will always be haters, and the importance of surrounding yourself with truly supportive friends.
At the end, I give suggestions on what we freelancers can do to move through the worry of being called a fraud. Since freelancers don’t have a manager who can change the workplace, as Tulshyan and Burey suggest, we have to take actions on our own.

Slow load time
