At this year's Macworld Expo 2010 Recosoft showed off its new software application PDF2Office for iWork. This is an amazing simple application for the Mac that allows you to convert any PDF to a Pages or Keynote document. In my testing it did a great job of preserving all of the formatting and with PDFs with text recognition it will make those editable in either Keynote or Pages. It costs $59 for a single user and have found it to be a great solution for having more content to work on in the iPad when it arrives. I would love if Recosoft made an iPad app that could convert PDFs on the iPad itself that you get from emails and create a truly mobile productive workstation. You can download a demo here - http://www.recosoft.com/download/trial.htmI will cover this software more in an upcoming episode ...

MacPractice Plans Development for the iPad

02/01/2010

Lincoln, NE, January 29, 2010 - MacPractice, Inc., the leading Apple developer of practice management and clinical software for medical, dental and chiropractic offices, announced plans for development of several medical and dental software applications for deployment on Apple's newly announced iPad. MacPractice medical and dental software Interface for the iPad is a new version MacPractice Interface for iPhone 2.0 redesigned to take advantage of the iPad's larger screen. A physician, dentist, chiropractor or optometrist may connect via Wi-Fi or 3G to access their schedule and patient records in MacPractice. Patient photos, alerts, prescription history and appointment history are all available. The patient's address is linked to Google Maps. Reminders on the iPad create MacPractice Reminders in the office for staff and providers to request an appointment, communicate instructions, or as a way to make a clinical note in MacPractice EMR. A doctor may monitor what is happening in the office from the hospital or golf course by viewing up-to-date daily management reports.

Doctors who perform hospital rounds or see patients at a remote location can now add new patients and post procedures and diagnoses into MacPractice in their office from their iPad or iPhone (requires the MacPractice HL7 Interface).

MacPractice Kiosk for iPad (iPad App) and MacPractice Web Interface for iPad will provide the ability for patients and staff to complete and sign MacPractice EMR forms including patient registration, HIPAA release, medical history, etc. on an iPad.

Chairside Dental Chart for iPad (iPad App) will interface with MacPractice DDS to record preexisting conditions, restorative and periodontal treatment and treatment plans. MacPractice is developing an iPad EMR / EHR App to integrate with MacPractice MD, MacPractice DC, MacPractice DDS and MacPractice 20/20. No details are available.

In February, MacPractice will preview MacPractice Interface for iPad at MacWorld in Booth #748, at HIMSS in Booth #3151 and at Chicago Midwinter Dental Meeting in Booth #2723. Physicians, dentists, chiropractors and eye doctors are encouraged to view QuickTime demo movies of MacPractice after registering at MacPractice.com.

MacPractice, Inc. is a client-centric practice management and clinical software development firm, comprised of highly experienced and caring individuals, dedicated to the development and support of best-of-class Macintosh software, hardware and associated services for physicians, dentists, chiropractors, and eye doctors.

Two of my favorite software developers have announced that they will be bringing new versions of Logos and Evernote to the iPad!!! - here is the info released so far!!

iPad Bible software from @Logos will be ready the day iPad ships!

Evernote loves tablets. We’ve got a long and storied history with tablets of all kinds. Got an old tablet lying around somewhere? Chances are we either developed technology for it, had applications that ran on it, or both. Usually both.

Remember the awesome Apple Newton? Evernote’s current R&D engineers developed the handwriting recognition technology that made it so notable (and ahead of its time). Remember those Doonesbury strips making fun of the Newton? You know who cried when those came out? We did. Well, notme personally, I was in college and the Newton was at the top of my unattainable gadget drool-list, but the guys sitting next to me right now clutching their Newton prototypes while watching the Apple liveblogs did. I’ve got those Donnesbury strips in my Evernote account now.

We’ve also been on just about every other form of tablet known to man. The original version of Evernote was written to run on Tablet PCs and the digital ink technology in the current version of Evernote for Windows is still the best in the industry. I even use an old Hitachi slate as a drink tray at home. Tablets are our roots, man. Our roots.

So naturally, we’ve been getting a lot of questions lately about our plans for supporting Apple’s hitherto-mythical tablet device, but we’ve avoided answering them just in case it turned out not to be a tablet but, um, a shoe or something. Still, we always hoped it’d be a tablet. You always remember your first love…

Anyway, now that the iPad has officially gone from “imminent!!” to “just announced!!” we can officially spill the beans on our official plans for Evernote on it. Here’s we go:

Evernote is going to support the Apple iPad. Oh Yeah. We’re gonna support the hell out of it. We’re glad to see that the current Evernote iPhone app will run on the iPad without modification, but we’ll be modifying it anyway to optimize the experience on the larger device. Oh how we’ll be modifying it! Expect rapid improvements to our iPhone app which will benefit all of our iPhone, iPod Touch and, now, iPad users in the near future.

Ok, so we’re excited by the iPad itself, and by the HP Slate, and the Sony VAIO L series, and the Nvidia Tegra, and by the added light that these and other devices will shine on touch computing in general. I’m looking at some happy engineers right now.

Below is a blog post by the Omni Group announcing their full support of the iPad. I think this is a huge announcement that will bring a great many of productivity applications to the iPad that will help turn it into a device that can more and more replace your traditional computer.

iPad or Bust! POSTED BY KEN CASE ON 01.29.10 @ 4:56 PM NEWS, OMNIFOCUS, OMNIGRAFFLE, OMNIGRAPHSKETCHER, OMNIOUTLINER,OMNIPLAN

One of the things we often struggle with as a company is deciding how much to talk about our future plans and our current work towards those plans. Our natural inclination is to be open about what we’re doing, but there are several problems with talking about future plans:

  • Our plans can and will change, upsetting customers who were making their own plans based on our original plan.
  • Our plans might interfere with current sales, as customers stop buying OmniGraffle 8 in anticipation of the future release of OmniGraffle 9.
  • We might get accused of promoting vaporware, as when we started talking about OmniFocus.

But there are also problems with not talking about our future plans, as it leaves people wondering what direction we’re going and whether they’d like to be going that direction too. So, given the exciting event of this week, I think it’s appropriate for us to share some of our plans with you now…

Remember how Macintosh was intended to be the computer “for the rest of us“? That’s what we feel Apple’s iPad is: the best computing device for most of the things people use computers for. (Or, as Apple puts it, “the best way to experience the web, email, and photos.”) It’s the computer people can sit down and start using immediately, without training, whether they’re 2 or 92.

We’re really excited about Apple’s iPad, and we want to make all of our products available for it as soon as we can. Yes, we already had a big year planned for 2010, with several long-anticipated major product releases—but we think iPad is really important: important enough to spend some time juggling our plans to figure out how we can introduce five new iPad apps.

Yes. Five. We want to bring all five of our productivity apps to iPad: OmniGraffle, OmniOutliner, OmniPlan, OmniFocus, andOmniGraphSketcher.

This is a big undertaking, and we can’t do it all at once. We started working on iPad adaptations of OmniGraffle and OmniFocus as soon as the SDK was made available Wednesday afternoon, and we’re hoping to get started with OmniGraphSketcher for iPad within the next few weeks.

OmniPlan for iPad will be a little further behind, simply because the OmniPlan development team is on the home stretch of their two-year OmniPlan 2 development cycle, and we’d like to get that out the door before bringing OmniPlan to another platform.

Similarly, the OmniOutliner team is also heavily into a major development cycle—one which affects not only the next major release of OmniOutliner, version 4, but also the upcoming major releases of both OmniFocus and OmniPlan—so that team is booked up for at least the next several months. But while it won’t be on iPad on day one, OmniOutliner is where all of our projects start and we think it will be a great fit for iPad, so we plan to adapt it as soon as possible.

What does this mean for our non-iPad apps? Well, for the apps we’re bringing to iPad immediately there will be a bit of a delay in their next major Mac release cycle: for example, while we’ve already done a fair bit of work on OmniGraffle 6 for Mac, we’re going to put that work on hold while we work on the iPad adaptation. Not that we don’t think OmniGraffle 6 is important or exciting, but we think OmniGraffle for iPad is even more important. For the other apps, OmniPlan 2 and OmniOutliner 4, we’re hoping for little or no delay in our upcoming releases, but there’s likely to be a bit of a pause immediately afterwards as the teams shift gears and start working on bringing those apps to iPad as well.

So, that’s our current plan. As I said in my introduction, our plans do change over time—obviously, they’ve changed quite a bit just this week!—so please don’t rely on things happening according to today’s particular snapshot of those plans. But I hope that this snapshot at least gives you a sense of what we’re doing and why (and perhaps even an idea of when), so you can decide whether we’re going in a direction you’re interested in. Either way, I hope you’ll let us know!

Thanks for your time!
