Healing Can Spread the Same Way Dysfunction Can

Dysfunction can move through families, relationships, and generations—but healing can spread too.

When one person begins living differently, taking responsibility, making amends, setting healthier boundaries, becoming dependable, and treating people with honesty and respect, others get to see that change is actually possible.

Today we’ll talk about how our actions can give other people permission to heal, why example is often more powerful than advice, and how recovery can interrupt old patterns instead of passing them on.

We cannot heal someone else for them—but the way we live can help them believe that healing is possible.

The Importance of a Recovery Foundation

The first three Steps are the foundation of recovery: admitting powerlessness, coming to believe that a Power greater than ourselves can restore us, and making a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understand Him.

Today we’ll talk about why that foundation has to remain strong, what happens when we start building recovery on top of weak or neglected spiritual ground, and why slipping often begins long before the drink—with a loss of honesty, hope, surrender, and dependence on God.

The Big Book and the Twelve and Twelve repeatedly use the language of foundations, cornerstones, arches, and keystones for a reason. If the foundation is weak, everything built on top of it is eventually at risk.

Life Will Take On New Meaning

The Big Book tells us that life will take on new meaning when we begin working with others and watching people recover.

Today we’ll talk about how recovery gives us something bigger than simply not drinking. Through service, fellowship, spiritual growth, and helping another alcoholic, we begin discovering purpose, connection, and a new way of living.

The life we once thought was over can become useful again—and sometimes the greatest meaning comes from using what we have been through to help someone else find their way out.

Our Refusal to Grow Up

Getting sober does not automatically make us emotionally mature.

We can stop drinking and still demand that people behave the way we want, depend on approval to feel okay, blame others for our unhappiness, avoid responsibility, and expect circumstances to provide the security we cannot find within ourselves.

Today we’ll talk about emotional sobriety, our refusal to grow up, and what happens when we begin accepting responsibility for our attitudes, reactions, expectations, and relationships.

Recovery asks us to become more than abstinent. It asks us to grow.

Understanding Love Languages

People can care deeply about each other and still miss one another because they give and receive love in different ways.

Today we’ll talk about the five love languages—words of affirmation, acts of service, receiving gifts, quality time, and physical touch—and how understanding them can improve communication, reduce unnecessary conflict, and strengthen relationships.

We’ll also look at how recovery can help us become more aware of what the people we love actually need instead of assuming they should experience love the same way we do.

When We Think the Other Shoe Is Going to Drop

For many alcoholics, peace can feel unfamiliar.

When life begins going well, we may start waiting for something bad to happen. We look for danger, create problems, question good relationships, or convince ourselves that calm cannot last.

Today we’ll talk about why this reaction is often not a warning that disaster is coming—it is simply the discomfort of living without chaos. Recovery teaches us how to stop bracing for impact, accept stability, and allow good things to happen without trying to destroy them first.

The Four Agreements

The Four Agreements offer a practical way to examine how we speak, think, react, and show up in our relationships.

Today we’ll talk about being impeccable with our word, not taking things personally, avoiding assumptions, and doing our best—and how these principles can support honesty, emotional balance, personal responsibility, and recovery.

They are simple ideas, but practicing them consistently can change how we handle conflict, fear, resentment, and the stories we tell ourselves.

Understanding AA Slogans

AA slogans are short, simple, and easy to repeat—but that does not mean they are shallow.

Today we’ll break down six familiar slogans: One Day at a Time, Easy Does It, Keep It Simple, First Things First, Keep Coming Back, and Fake It Till You Make It.

We’ll talk about what each slogan actually means, how it can be misunderstood, and why these simple phrases can become practical tools when fear, confusion, impatience, and old thinking begin taking over.

The slogans are not meant to replace the Steps or deeper spiritual work. They help us remember what to do when life becomes complicated.

Acceptance Is the Key That Will Set You Free

Acceptance does not mean that we approve of everything that happened, excuse harmful behavior, or stop taking action. It means we stop fighting reality long enough to see clearly what is true and what we can do next.

Today we’ll talk about how resistance keeps us trapped in anger, fear, control, and resentment—and how acceptance opens the door to peace, responsibility, spiritual growth, and freedom.

We may not be able to change the past, other people, or every circumstance. But when we accept what is, we can finally begin changing what belongs to us.

Maximum Service to God and Others

Recovery is not only about what we stop doing. It is about becoming useful.

Today we’ll talk about what it means to place God first, get out of self, and become of maximum service to the people around us. Service is more than holding a position or attending a meeting. It can mean listening, showing up, helping another alcoholic, keeping our word, practicing patience, and carrying spiritual principles into our homes, work, and relationships.

When we stop asking only what life can give us and begin asking how we can be helpful, our lives take on greater meaning and purpose.

Alcoholism—The Progressive Disease

Alcoholism does not remain in one place. It may begin slowly and appear manageable, but over time it takes more: more attention, more time, more honesty, more relationships, more health, and more freedom.

Today we’ll talk about how alcoholism progresses even when the outside of someone’s life still looks intact, why consequences usually become more serious, and how denial allows the disease to keep growing.

The progression can be stopped. Recovery begins when we recognize the problem, admit the truth, surrender, accept help, and begin taking the actions that lead us toward a different life.

A Vigorous Attempt to Repair the Damage

Step Eight asks us to make a list of the people we have harmed and become willing to make amends to them all.

This requires more than remembering obvious mistakes. We must honestly examine our relationships, admit the damage caused by our selfishness, fear, dishonesty, neglect, anger, and drinking, and stop allowing resentment toward others to hide our own responsibility.

Today we’ll talk about overcoming the obstacles of blame, purposeful forgetting, and an unwillingness to forgive—and why repairing the damage begins with a vigorous attempt to see the truth, become willing, and prepare ourselves to make things right.

We may not be able to undo the past, but we can take responsibility for it and begin rebuilding what our behavior damaged.

And the Wisdom to Know the Difference

The Serenity Prayer asks us to accept what we cannot change, find the courage to change what we can, and develop the wisdom to know the difference.

That wisdom is not always automatic. Fear can tell us to stay silent when action is needed. Pride can make us fight things beyond our control. Resentment can keep us focused on other people while ignoring our own choices.

Today we’ll talk about how recovery helps us separate acceptance from avoidance, courage from control, and responsibility from blame. We may not control every person, circumstance, or outcome—but we can choose our attitude, our boundaries, our actions, and the direction we take next.

We Thoroughly Follow the Path or We Drink

Recovery leaves very little room for half-measures. We either continue practicing honesty, open-mindedness, willingness, faith, humility, service, and spiritual growth—or we slowly drift back toward the thinking and behavior that once made drinking seem like the answer.

Today we’ll talk about what it means to thoroughly follow the path, why knowledge alone is not enough, and how neglecting the daily actions of recovery can place us back in danger long before we ever pick up a drink.

The choice is not between perfection and failure. It is between continuing to practice the program or returning to the life we already know does not work.

We Must Move Away From Victimhood

What happened to us may not have been our fault. The pain, trauma, betrayal, neglect, or abuse may have been real, and acknowledging it matters.

But there comes a point when continuing to live only through what happened keeps us trapped in the same story.

Today we’ll talk about the difference between admitting that we were victimized and building our entire identity around victimhood. We’ll look at how blame, anger, helplessness, and waiting for someone else to make things right can prevent us from moving forward.

Taking responsibility for our healing does not excuse the people who harmed us. It means refusing to give them control over the rest of our lives.

How Trauma and Survival Kill the Inner Child

When a child is forced to survive instead of simply being allowed to grow, something inside begins to shut down.

Playfulness becomes caution. Trust becomes suspicion. Curiosity becomes fear. Feelings get buried because there is no room for them when the only goal is making it through the day.

Today we’ll talk about how trauma and survival mode can silence the inner child, shape our adult reactions, and leave us disconnected from joy, safety, trust, and self-worth. We’ll also look at what healing can involve: recognizing what happened, learning to feel safe, setting boundaries, working through the past, and giving ourselves permission to become more than what survival required us to be.

Stop Measuring Alcoholism by What You Still Have

A job, a house, a car, money in the bank, or the fact that you have never been arrested does not prove that alcohol is not destroying your life.

Too often, people measure alcoholism by what has not collapsed yet. But what about the relationships that are gone, the children you are not present for, the jobs you keep changing, the friends who no longer call, the dishonesty, the isolation, and the way everyone around you has learned to adjust to your drinking?

Today we’ll talk about why “functioning alcoholic” can be such a misleading label, how comparison keeps people from seeing the truth, and why the better question is not, “What do I still have?” but, “What is alcohol already taking from me?”

The Spiritual Substance of Anonymity Is Sacrifice

Anonymity in Alcoholics Anonymous is more than keeping our names out of the public eye. At its deepest level, anonymity asks us to sacrifice ego, recognition, status, control, and the desire to be seen as important.

Today we’ll talk about why sacrifice is the spiritual foundation of anonymity, how placing principles before personalities protects AA, and why carrying the message means giving freely without needing credit, praise, or personal gain.

When we become willing to step out of the spotlight, the message becomes more important than the messenger—and the alcoholic who still suffers has a better chance of finding help.

We Didn’t Get Sober to Isolate Family

Sobriety is supposed to help us become more present, honest, patient, and available to the people we love—not disappear into meetings, recovery activities, or our own emotional walls.

Today we’ll talk about the difference between healthy recovery and using recovery as another form of isolation. We’ll look at how to rebuild trust, include family without making them responsible for our sobriety, create healthier boundaries, and bring the gifts of recovery back into the home.

We did not get sober just to survive alone. We got sober so we could learn how to show up differently in our relationships.

Our Primary Purpose

Alcoholics Anonymous has one primary purpose: to stay sober and help other alcoholics achieve sobriety.

Today we’ll talk about why carrying the message must remain at the center of everything AA does, how one alcoholic helping another protects the simplicity of the program, and what can happen when personalities, politics, money, status, or outside issues begin replacing our common purpose.

AA does not exist to solve every problem in the world. It exists to offer the alcoholic who still suffers a way out—and each of us has a responsibility to help keep that door open.

What Is a Page 21 Drunk?

Page 21 of the Big Book gives us one of AA’s clearest descriptions of the real alcoholic.

The alcoholic may begin as a moderate drinker and may not drink continuously, but eventually loses control once drinking begins. The consequences grow worse, promises are repeatedly broken, and sooner or later alcohol takes priority over everything else.

Today we’ll talk about what people mean by a “Page 21 drunk,” why alcoholism is not determined only by how often or how much someone drinks, and why honestly identifying with the description of the alcoholic can open the door to recovery.

The purpose is not to attach another label to ourselves. It is to understand the problem clearly enough to become willing to accept the solution.

No More Excuses

At some point in recovery, we have to stop explaining why we cannot change and begin taking responsibility for what we can do today.

Pages 99–103 of the Big Book remind us that sobriety must be demonstrated through considerate and helpful living. When we fall short, we repair the damage promptly. We continue walking the path of spiritual progress, place ourselves in God’s hands, and stop allowing people, places, fear, or circumstances to become excuses for returning to old behavior.

The question is no longer, “What can I get out of this?” It becomes, “What can I bring to it, and where can I be most helpful?”

Today we’ll talk about ending the blame, denial, delay, and excuses—and beginning to practice honesty, willingness, responsibility, faith, and action.

AA Will Forever Be Non-Professional

Tradition Eight says that Alcoholics Anonymous should always remain non-professional, while allowing service centers to employ special workers when necessary.

Today we’ll talk about why AA was never meant to become a profession, a business, or a system run by experts. Its strength comes from one alcoholic sharing experience, strength, and hope with another—freely, honestly, and without titles or status getting in the way.

We’ll also look at the difference between doing professional work in the recovery field and carrying the AA message, why paid workers may support AA services without being paid to do Twelfth Step work, and how keeping AA non-professional protects its simplicity and primary purpose.

Can We Live To Good Purposes And Be Happy?

Step Twelve asks one of the biggest questions of recovery: Can we carry the principles of AA beyond helping another alcoholic and practice them in every part of our lives?

Can we bring love and tolerance into our families, faith into our work, courage into disappointment, and serenity into the losses and difficulties that life brings?

Needed vs. Valued

Have you ever noticed that being needed and being valued are not the same thing?

Someone can need what you do without truly valuing who you are. In recovery, relationships, work, and even service, it's easy to confuse being useful with being appreciated. When our identity becomes wrapped up in being needed, we can lose ourselves trying to earn our worth.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we'll explore the difference between being needed and being valued. We'll talk about healthy relationships, self-worth, boundaries, codependency, and why our value doesn't come from what we do for others—it comes from who we are.

The Big Book tells us that fear is "an evil and corroding thread" woven throughout our lives. It doesn't just affect how we feel—it influences our decisions, our relationships, our recovery, and even our faith.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we'll explore how fear quietly controls us, how it disguises itself as anger, pride, control, perfectionism, and procrastination, and why so many of our struggles can be traced back to it.

More importantly, we'll talk about how the Twelve Steps help us identify our fears, face them honestly, and begin replacing fear with faith, courage, and trust in a Higher Power.

If fear has been running your life, there is a way out.

Not Everything Is Unconditional

We hear a lot about unconditional love, but does that mean unconditional trust, unconditional access, or unconditional tolerance?

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about the difference between love, acceptance, forgiveness, and healthy boundaries. Recovery teaches us that we can love someone without enabling them, forgive someone without trusting them, and care about someone without allowing destructive behavior into our lives.

Not everything in life is unconditional—and that's not a lack of love. Sometimes the healthiest thing we can do for ourselves and for others is to establish clear, healthy boundaries.

A True Freedom

Most people think freedom means being able to do whatever you want. Recovery teaches us something different.

True freedom isn't the absence of rules or responsibilities. It's freedom from the things that once controlled us—fear, resentment, anger, shame, addiction, and the need to escape.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we'll talk about the kind of freedom that can't be bought, voted on, or handed to us by someone else. It's the freedom that comes from honesty, acceptance, responsibility, and a willingness to change.

What if the greatest freedom you'll ever experience isn't changing your circumstances, but changing yourself?

Emotional Sobriety

Getting sober is one thing. Learning how to live sober is something else entirely.

Many people stop drinking or using, but still struggle with resentment, fear, anger, control, anxiety, relationships, and the emotional habits that kept them stuck for years. That's where emotional sobriety begins.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we'll talk about what it means to grow emotionally—not just physically or spiritually. How do we respond instead of react? How do we handle disappointment without falling apart? How do we stop expecting the world to change and start changing ourselves?

Recovery isn't just about putting down the drink or the drug. It's about learning to live life on life's terms with honesty, humility, and emotional maturity.

The Mask Men Wear

From the time many boys are young, they're taught to be tough, stay quiet, and keep their emotions to themselves. "Man up." "Don't cry." "Handle it yourself."

But what happens when the mask becomes so normal that we forget who we really are?

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about the pressure men face to hide fear, sadness, shame, and vulnerability—and how that can affect recovery, relationships, and mental health. Is vulnerability really weakness, or is it one of the greatest strengths a man can develop?

When You Know the System Is Broken... Now What?

At some point, many of us stop asking, "What's wrong with the recovery system?" and start asking a harder question: "What am I going to do about it?"

It's easy to criticize. It's easy to point fingers. It's much harder to become part of the solution.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we'll talk about the responsibility that comes with experience. If recovery has changed your life, what obligation—if any—do you have to help improve the system for the next person? How do you create change without becoming bitter? How do you challenge what's broken while still carrying a message of hope?

Self Supporting Alcoholics?

Learn It or Live It Again

One of the greatest gifts in recovery is that we don't have to keep repeating the same mistakes.

Experience is a powerful teacher—but it doesn't always have to be our own experience. We can learn from our past, from the wisdom of others, from the Big Book, from sponsors, from mentors, and from people who have already walked the road we're traveling.

The problem isn't making mistakes.

The problem is refusing to learn from them.

Recovery invites us to stop asking, "Why does this keep happening to me?" and start asking, "What is this trying to teach me?"

When we ignore the lessons, we often find ourselves facing the same problems in different forms. The names change. The places change. The circumstances change. But the patterns remain.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about breaking unhealthy cycles, learning from both our successes and failures, and discovering why wisdom allows us to grow without having to repeat every painful lesson ourselves.

Because life will keep presenting the lesson...

Until we're willing to learn it.

10 Timeless Proverbs That We Use in Recovery

Recovery is filled with simple truths that have stood the test of time.

Long before there were treatment centers, recovery meetings, and counseling programs, people passed down short sayings that captured profound wisdom about life, character, relationships, and personal growth.

Many of those timeless proverbs fit recovery perfectly.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we'll explore ten classic proverbs and discuss how they apply to sobriety, humility, honesty, accountability, perseverance, and spiritual growth. Some come from the Book of Proverbs, while others are well-known sayings that have shaped generations.

We'll talk about why these simple phrases continue to matter and how they can help us make better decisions, strengthen our recovery, and navigate life's challenges one day at a time.

Nothing Happens in God's World by Mistake

One of the most quoted lines in recovery comes from the acceptance story in the Big Book:

"Nothing, absolutely nothing, happens in God's world by mistake."

At first, those words can be difficult to accept. How can we make sense of addiction, loss, broken relationships, pain, or tragedy? Does that mean God caused those things?

Not necessarily.

It may mean that even in the middle of our mistakes, our failures, and life's hardships, God can bring purpose, growth, healing, and hope. Recovery doesn't erase our past, but it can redeem it. The very experiences we wish had never happened often become the experiences that allow us to help someone else.

Acceptance doesn't mean approving of everything that happens.

It means trusting that God can work through it.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about one of recovery's most powerful principles: acceptance. We'll explore what this statement really means, how it has helped millions find peace in difficult circumstances, and why trusting God's plan doesn't require us to understand it completely.

Because sometimes the greatest miracles aren't found in avoiding life's struggles...

They're found in discovering God's purpose through them.

Utilizing Humility

Humility is one of the most misunderstood principles in recovery.

Many people think humility means putting yourself down, thinking less of yourself, or believing you're somehow less important than everyone else.

That's not humility.

Humility is seeing yourself honestly.

It's recognizing your strengths without arrogance and your weaknesses without shame. It's being teachable, willing to listen, and open to growth. Humility allows us to ask for help, admit when we're wrong, accept feedback, and continue learning no matter how much time we have in recovery.

The Big Book reminds us that pride often keeps us trapped, while humility opens the door to change. It isn't weakness—it takes tremendous strength to admit we don't have all the answers.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about how to put humility into practice every day. We'll explore what humility is, what it isn't, and why it remains one of the greatest tools we have for maintaining long-term recovery and healthy relationships.

Because humility doesn't make you think less of yourself.

It helps you think of yourself honestly—and that honesty creates room for growth.

Alcoholism: The Family Disease

Alcoholism doesn't just affect the person who drinks.

It affects everyone who loves them.

Spouses begin walking on eggshells. Children learn to adapt to chaos. Parents carry guilt. Brothers and sisters become caretakers. Family roles change, trust erodes, and silence often replaces honest conversation.

That's why alcoholism is often called a family disease.

Each person develops their own way of surviving. Some become rescuers. Some withdraw. Some become perfectionists. Others become the "hero," the "lost child," or the "scapegoat." Even after the drinking stops, many of those survival patterns remain.

The good news is that recovery can become a family journey, too.

Healing isn't just about putting down the bottle. It's about rebuilding trust, improving communication, setting healthy boundaries, and learning new ways to live together. Recovery gives every member of the family an opportunity to heal from the effects of the disease.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about how alcoholism impacts the entire family system, why recovery involves more than just the alcoholic, and what healing can look like for everyone involved.

Because addiction may affect the whole family...

But recovery can help heal the whole family.

The Daily Reprieve

The Big Book reminds us that "we are not cured of alcoholism. What we really have is a daily reprieve contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition."

Those words are both humbling and hopeful.

Recovery isn't something we graduate from. It isn't a destination we reach and never have to think about again. It's a daily way of living—one that asks us to stay spiritually grounded, honest with ourselves, and willing to keep growing.

Every day we wake up with a new opportunity.

An opportunity to choose gratitude over resentment.

Service over selfishness.

Honesty over fear.

Faith over self-will.

Today's reprieve isn't guaranteed by yesterday's sobriety. It's strengthened by the actions we take today and the spiritual principles we practice in our daily lives.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're exploring what the Big Book means by a "daily reprieve," why spiritual maintenance matters, and how small, consistent actions help us stay connected to recovery one day at a time.

Because sobriety isn't something we earned once.

It's something we're grateful to practice today.

Recovery Through the Lens of the Nine Personality Types

Have you ever wondered why two people can hear the exact same recovery message and respond completely differently?

Part of the answer may be personality.

The Enneagram describes nine different personality types, each with its own strengths, fears, blind spots, motivations, and ways of navigating the world. While personality doesn't cause alcoholism or addiction, it can influence how we cope with stress, avoid discomfort, build relationships, and approach recovery.

Some of us seek perfection.

Some seek approval.

Some seek achievement.

Some seek identity.

Some seek knowledge.

Some seek security.

Some seek excitement.

Some seek control.

Some seek peace.

None of these are bad qualities by themselves. In fact, many of them can become tremendous assets in recovery. But every strength has a shadow side, and when fear, self-will, or addiction enter the picture, our greatest strengths can become our greatest struggles.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're exploring the nine personality types through a recovery lens. We'll discuss how each type may experience addiction differently, the character defects and assets that commonly show up, and how recovery can help us become healthier, more balanced versions of ourselves.

Because recovery isn't about changing who you are.

It's about becoming the healthiest version of who you've always been.

Trust and Discernment Go Hand In Hand

Recovery teaches us that trust is essential.

But it also teaches us that trust without discernment can become dangerous.

Many of us entered recovery with damaged trust. Some of us trusted the wrong people. Others trusted no one at all. We had been hurt, manipulated, disappointed, or betrayed—and often we had done the same to others.

The answer isn't blind trust.

The answer isn't suspicion of everyone.

The answer is learning discernment.

Discernment is the ability to see things as they are. It helps us distinguish between healthy guidance and bad advice, between people who are safe and people who are not, and between God's will and our own self-will.

Trust allows us to connect.

Discernment helps us choose wisely where that trust belongs.

The Big Book encourages us to seek guidance, take suggestions, and rely on a Higher Power, but it never asks us to abandon common sense. Healthy recovery requires both an open heart and clear eyes.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about the balance between trust and discernment, why neither one works very well without the other, and how recovery teaches us to become both more trusting and more wise at the same time.

Because trust builds relationships.

Discernment protects them.

And together, they help us walk a healthier path.

Signs of Healing That Look Like Problems

One of the strangest things about recovery is that sometimes the very things we worry about most are actually signs that we're getting better.

Many people enter recovery expecting life to improve immediately. Then they experience anxiety, cravings, grief, uncomfortable emotions, relationship changes, or even drinking dreams, and they begin to wonder if something is wrong.

Often, something is right.

Healing isn't always comfortable.

When you've spent years numbing emotions, feeling them again can be painful. When you've lived in denial, honesty can feel overwhelming. When you've used alcohol to avoid problems, facing reality can seem harder before it becomes easier.

The return of emotion isn't failure.

It's evidence that you're waking up.

The appearance of discomfort isn't always a setback.

Sometimes it's proof that growth is taking place.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about the signs of healing that many people mistake for problems. From anxiety and grief to cravings, drinking dreams, and learning to sit with uncomfortable feelings, we'll explore why recovery sometimes feels worse before it feels better—and why that doesn't mean you're moving in the wrong direction.

Because not every struggle is a warning sign.

Sometimes it's evidence that healing is finally happening.

The Alcoholic's Double Life

One of the most exhausting parts of alcoholism isn't the drinking.

It's the pretending.

Many alcoholics become experts at managing appearances. We convince the world we're doing fine while quietly falling apart behind closed doors. We wear masks at work, at church, with our families, and even in the mirror, hoping no one notices the chaos we're desperately trying to hide.

The Big Book describes the alcoholic as living a divided existence—caught between what we know we should do and what we continue to do anyway. We make promises we intend to keep, swear this time will be different, and then find ourselves trapped in the same cycle all over again.

The double life isn't just dishonest to others.

It's dishonest to ourselves.

Recovery begins when the mask comes off. When we stop trying to manage our image and start pursuing honesty. The freedom we find isn't because we became perfect—it's because we no longer have to live two separate lives.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about the burden of living behind a mask, the emotional toll of pretending everything is okay, and how rigorous honesty allows us to become one person instead of two.

Because the opposite of addiction isn't just sobriety.

It's authenticity.

The Story of Redemption from an Absent Father

There are few regrets heavier than realizing you weren't there for the people who needed you most.

Addiction has a way of stealing more than our health and our freedom. It steals birthdays, ball games, holidays, conversations, trust, and years that can never be reclaimed. Many of us look back and see children who grew up while we were physically absent—or emotionally unavailable—even when we were in the same room.

But recovery offers something remarkable.

Not the chance to rewrite the past...

The chance to redeem the future.

The Ninth Step teaches us to make direct amends wherever possible, but some of the most meaningful amends aren't spoken. They're lived. Showing up. Keeping our word. Being present. Choosing consistency over excuses. Building trust one day at a time.

A child may never get their childhood back.

But they can still have a father who chooses to be there today.

Today on The Daily Trudge, I'm sharing a personal story of failure, forgiveness, accountability, and hope. It's the story of how recovery can transform an absent father into a present one—not through empty promises, but through changed behavior and a willingness to keep showing up.

Because redemption doesn't erase yesterday.

It begins with what we choose to do today.

Justice In Recovery

When most people hear the word justice, they think of punishment.

Recovery teaches us something deeper.

Step Nine doesn't tell us to beat ourselves up for the past. It tells us to make direct amends wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others. It's not about paying an endless debt—it's about taking responsibility and becoming willing to repair the damage we've caused.

Justice in recovery isn't revenge.

It's restitution.

It's admitting where we've been wrong, making things right when we can, and accepting that some wounds can only be healed by living differently from this day forward.

An apology without changed behavior is only words.

A true amend is demonstrated through consistent action, honesty, humility, and a commitment to never repeat the same harm if it can be avoided.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're exploring what justice really looks like through the lens of the Ninth Step, why making amends is about freedom rather than guilt, and how accountability becomes one of the greatest gifts we can offer ourselves and those we've hurt.

Because recovery isn't about escaping the past.

It's about facing it honestly, making it right where possible, and living in such a way that our future tells a different story.

Trudging Through Adversity

Nobody volunteers for adversity.

We don't ask for the setbacks, the disappointments, the losses, or the moments that leave us questioning whether we can keep going. But if recovery teaches us anything, it's that growth often happens while we're walking through the very things we'd rather avoid.

The Big Book doesn't promise an easy road. It speaks of "trudging the Road of Happy Destiny." Notice it doesn't say sprinting or skipping—it says trudging. That's steady. Intentional. One foot in front of the other, even when the path is steep.

Adversity has a way of revealing what's really inside us. It tests our faith, challenges our patience, and forces us to decide whether we'll return to old solutions or lean into the principles we've been learning.

Sometimes the greatest victory isn't fixing the problem.

Sometimes it's simply refusing to quit.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about perseverance in the face of hardship, why difficult seasons don't have to derail our recovery, and how continuing to move forward—no matter how slowly—is often the greatest act of courage.

Because recovery isn't measured by how fast we travel.

It's measured by our willingness to keep trudging when the road gets hard.

Freedom To Choose

One of the greatest gifts recovery gives us isn't the absence of problems—it's the return of choice.

For years, many of us lived as if we had no options. We reacted instead of responded. We blamed circumstances, other people, or our emotions. But as As Bill Sees It reminds us on page 124, we are called to practice freedom through responsibility, learning to make better decisions one day at a time rather than being driven by old instincts and compulsions.

The truth is, life will continue to hand us difficult situations. We won't always get to choose what happens to us, but we do get to choose how we respond.

Every day presents opportunities:

  • To tell the truth instead of lying.
  • To forgive instead of resent.
  • To pick up the phone instead of isolate.
  • To seek God instead of self-will.
  • To take the next right action instead of the familiar wrong one.

Recovery isn't about becoming perfect.

It's about becoming free enough to choose a different path.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're exploring what real freedom looks like, why responsibility and freedom go hand in hand, and how the smallest choices repeated over time can completely change the direction of our lives.

Because true freedom isn't doing whatever we want.

It's finally having the ability to choose what is right.

Earned Virtues

Some things in life can't be bought, inherited, or handed to us.

They have to be earned.

Honesty is earned by telling the truth when it's uncomfortable. Humility is earned by admitting we're wrong. Integrity is earned when our actions match our words. Patience is earned by enduring difficulty without giving up. Trust is earned one decision at a time.

Recovery works the same way.

The Twelve Steps don't magically give us these virtues. They create the conditions where they can be developed through consistent action and lived experience. Every inventory taken, every amends made, every act of service, and every difficult choice strengthens the character we're trying to build.

The Big Book says, "Faith without works is dead." Character isn't formed by what we say we believe—it's revealed by what we repeatedly do.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about the virtues that can only be earned, why hardship often shapes our greatest strengths, and how the daily practice of recovery transforms not just our sobriety, but who we become.

Because the greatest gifts in recovery...

Aren't given.

They're earned. And they're worth every step of the journey.

Pain, The Touchstone To Change

Most of us don't change because we've seen the light.

We change because we've felt the heat.

Pain has a way of breaking through denial. It strips away excuses, exposes our self-deception, and forces us to ask the questions we've been avoiding. For many of us in recovery, the pain of staying the same finally became greater than the fear of changing.

The Big Book reminds us that alcohol beat us into a state of reasonableness. We reached a point where our old solutions no longer worked, and we became willing to try something different.

Pain isn't the goal.

But it can become the catalyst.

It can push us toward honesty, humility, surrender, and ultimately a new way of living. The challenge is not to waste it. We can let pain make us bitter, or we can let it make us better.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about why pain is often the doorway to transformation, how suffering can become a teacher, and why some of the greatest blessings in recovery begin with our darkest moments.

Is the thing that finally opens us to change.

A Journey Of A Thousand Miles Begins With A Single Step

Recovery doesn't happen all at once.

No one wakes up one morning with ten years of sobriety, a repaired family, healthy relationships, and a peaceful mind. It starts with a single decision—a willingness to do something different than we've always done.

For some, that first step is walking into a meeting. For others, it's asking for help, calling a sponsor, admitting the truth, or simply saying, "I can't do this alone anymore."

The destination can feel overwhelming when we're focused on how far we have left to go. But recovery teaches us to stop counting the miles and start taking the next right step.

The Big Book tells us that half measures availed us nothing. Progress comes from action, not intention. We don't have to solve our entire future today—we just have to be willing to move forward.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about the power of small beginnings, why consistency beats intensity, and how one simple act of courage can completely change the direction of your life.

Starts with one step. Then another. And another.

If You Want To Go Fast, Go Alone. If You Want To Go Far, Go Together.

Recovery was never meant to be a solo journey.

Many of us spent years believing we could figure it out on our own. We isolated, hid our struggles, and convinced ourselves that asking for help was a sign of weakness. But the truth is, isolation is often where addiction grows strongest.

The AA program is built on connection. Sponsors, meetings, home groups, service work, and one alcoholic helping another all remind us that we don't have to carry the burden alone.

Can someone get sober by themselves? Maybe.

But lasting recovery is strengthened by accountability, shared experience, encouragement, and the willingness to walk alongside others who understand the journey.

The people around us challenge us when we're wrong, encourage us when we're discouraged, and remind us that hope is possible when we can't see it for ourselves.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about why community matters, the power of walking this road together, and why some of the greatest breakthroughs in recovery happen when we stop trying to do everything on our own.

Because one person can travel quickly.

But together, we can travel farther than we ever imagined.

Fall Down Seven Times, Stand Up Eight!

Recovery isn't about never falling.

It's about refusing to stay down.

Every one of us has stumbled. We've made mistakes, broken promises, relapsed, lost hope, and wondered if we had what it takes to keep going. But our failures don't define us—our willingness to get back up does.

The people who find lasting recovery aren't necessarily the strongest or the smartest. They're the ones who keep showing up. They learn from yesterday, make a different choice today, and refuse to let one bad moment become a permanent way of life.

The Big Book reminds us that we claim spiritual progress rather than spiritual perfection. Progress means we're going to have setbacks. It means we'll have difficult days. But if we stay honest, stay teachable, and stay willing, we don't have to let those setbacks become surrender.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about resilience, perseverance, and why getting back up one more time may be the most important decision you'll ever make.

Because victory doesn't belong to the person who never falls.

It belongs to the person who gets back up again.

Changed Behavior, The Only True Amends

An apology without change is just another promise.

The people we've hurt don't simply need to hear that we're sorry—they need to see that we're different. Real amends aren't measured by words. They're measured by consistent action over time.

The Ninth Step asks us to make direct amends wherever possible, but the spirit of that step goes much deeper than saying, "I'm sorry." It calls us to live differently. To stop causing the same harm. To become the kind of person our actions prove us to be.

For many of us, the greatest amends we can ever make to our children, spouses, parents, employers, and friends is not a speech—it's years of dependable, honest, and sober living.

Trust isn't rebuilt overnight.

It's rebuilt one truthful conversation, one kept commitment, and one changed behavior at a time.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about why changed behavior is the only apology that consistently restores faith, why words lose their meaning without action behind them, and how living the amends every day may be more powerful than anything we could ever say.

Because in recovery, people don't just listen to our words.

They watch our lives.

The Big Book tells us that practical experience shows nothing will so much insure immunity from drinking as intensive work with other alcoholics. Why? Because when we give away what was so freely given to us, we reinforce it in our own lives.

Recovery was never meant to be hoarded.

It was meant to be shared.

Every phone call answered, every ride to a meeting, every newcomer welcomed, every honest conversation, every cup of coffee poured, and every hand extended is another opportunity to strengthen our own sobriety while helping someone else find theirs.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about why service isn't an optional part of recovery—it's a vital part of staying spiritually fit. We'll explore what it really means to "give it away" and why the more we freely give, the more we receive.

Because recovery isn't something you lose by giving away.

It's something you keep by sharing.

Recovery Happens Outside Your Comfort Zone

If you stay where you're comfortable, you'll usually stay where you've always been.

Growth requires discomfort.

Think about your own recovery. Was it comfortable admitting powerlessness? Was it comfortable asking for help? Making amends? Walking into your first meeting? Calling a sponsor? Looking honestly at yourself during inventory?

Probably not.

Yet those uncomfortable moments often become the turning points that change our lives.

The truth is, our comfort zone is often built around familiar thinking and familiar behavior—the very things that kept us sick. If we keep doing only what feels safe, we risk repeating the same patterns that brought us to recovery in the first place.

Real recovery asks us to be willing to do something different. To have difficult conversations. To face uncomfortable truths. To let go of old beliefs. To trust the process even when we don't know the outcome.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about why growth and comfort rarely exist in the same place, how fear keeps us stuck, and why stepping outside our comfort zone is often the first step toward freedom.

Because the life you've always wanted may be waiting just outside the place you've always been afraid to leave.

We Learn From The Past Or We Repeat It!

The past has two purposes: to teach us or to trap us.

If we refuse to examine our mistakes, our patterns, and our choices, we're likely to repeat them. The same thinking leads to the same actions, and the same actions often produce the same results.

Recovery isn't about pretending the past never happened. It's about learning from it without living in it.

The Big Book tells us that we "repeated the same mistakes over and over expecting different results." Real change begins when we become willing to look honestly at our history, accept our part, and make different decisions moving forward.

Every relapse, every resentment, every broken relationship, and every poor choice can become a lesson if we're willing to learn from it. But if we ignore those lessons, history has a way of repeating itself.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about the importance of self-examination, why patterns matter, and how learning from yesterday can keep us from making the same mistakes tomorrow.

Because experience isn't always the best teacher.

Evaluated experience is.

Why Living In The Now Is So Important

So many of us spend our lives trapped between two places we can't control.

We replay yesterday's mistakes, wishing we could change them. We worry about tomorrow's problems, trying to predict an outcome that hasn't happened yet. In the process, we miss the only moment we actually have—the present.

Recovery is lived one day at a time for a reason.

We can't stay sober yesterday.
We can't stay sober tomorrow.
We can only stay sober today.

Living in the now doesn't mean ignoring the future or pretending the past didn't happen. It means learning from yesterday without living there and planning for tomorrow without being consumed by it.

The Big Book reminds us that our real purpose is to fit ourselves to be of maximum service to God and the people about us. That can only happen in the present moment.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about why living in the now is so important, how fear and regret steal our peace, and why some of the greatest freedom in recovery comes from focusing on what's right in front of us.

Because yesterday is history.

Tomorrow isn't promised.

But today is a gift.

Empathy VS Sympathy

In recovery, people often use the words empathy and sympathy as if they mean the same thing—but they don't.

Sympathy says, "I feel sorry for you."

Empathy says, "I've been there too. You're not alone."

One creates distance. The other creates connection.

The most powerful moments in AA and recovery happen when one alcoholic sits across from another and says, "I understand because I've lived it." That's why identification is so important. We don't carry the message from a place of superiority. We carry it from shared experience.

Empathy doesn't mean rescuing someone or taking away their pain. It means walking beside them, listening without judgment, and reminding them that recovery is possible.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about the difference between empathy and sympathy, why one builds connection while the other can unintentionally create separation, and how learning to truly understand another person can change both their recovery—and our own.

Because sometimes the most healing words we can say are:

"Me too."

The 12th Step Call

There was a time when a 12th Step call meant dropping whatever you were doing to help another alcoholic. No spotlight. No recognition. No social media post. Just one person carrying a message of hope to another person who was suffering.

The 12th Step is where recovery leaves the pages of the book and enters the real world. It's where gratitude becomes action. It's where we stop asking, "What can recovery do for me?" and start asking, "Who can I help today?"

Many of us discovered that helping others wasn't just a nice thing to do—it was essential to our own recovery. The Big Book tells us that practical experience shows nothing will so much insure immunity from drinking as intensive work with other alcoholics. Why? Because service gets us out of ourselves. It reminds us where we came from and why we were given a second chance.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about the 12th Step call. What does it look like today? Has the spirit of carrying the message changed? And why does helping another alcoholic remain one of the most powerful tools in recovery?

Because the 12th Step isn't the end of the journey.

It's where the journey becomes bigger than us.

The Human Step

In the 12&12, Step Ten is often called the human step because it recognizes a simple truth: we are not going to become perfect. We are going to make mistakes. We are going to have moments of selfishness, dishonesty, resentment, and fear. The difference is that today, we don't have to stay there.

Step Ten teaches us to continue taking personal inventory and, when we're wrong, promptly admit it. It is the bridge between spiritual growth and everyday living. Instead of waiting for our lives to fall apart, we learn to catch problems early. Instead of defending our mistakes, we learn to own them. Instead of letting resentments pile up, we deal with them before they become spiritual poison.

The human step reminds us that recovery isn't about perfection. It's about progress through awareness, honesty, and willingness. We don't graduate from inventory. We don't outgrow accountability. We simply become quicker to recognize when we're off course and more willing to make corrections.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about why Step Ten is called the human step. What does it mean to live in inventory? How do we balance self-examination without becoming self-obsessed? And why is promptly admitting our mistakes one of the greatest freedoms recovery has to offer?

Because spiritual growth isn't found in never making mistakes.

It's found in what we do after we make them.

God, As We Understand Him

One of the most misunderstood phrases in Alcoholics Anonymous is found in Step Three: "God as we understood Him." For some, those words bring comfort. For others, they bring questions, doubts, or even resistance.

The founders of AA recognized that people come from different backgrounds, beliefs, and experiences. That's why the program doesn't ask us to adopt someone else's understanding of God. Instead, it invites us to become willing to seek a Power greater than ourselves—one that can restore hope, direction, and sanity to our lives.

Many of us arrived in recovery carrying baggage from religion, disappointment, anger, or confusion. Others had no belief at all. Yet countless alcoholics have discovered that recovery doesn't begin with having all the answers. It begins with willingness, open-mindedness, and the simple recognition that self-will alone wasn't enough.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about what "God as we understand Him" really means. How does our understanding change over time? Why did AA leave room for individual experience? And how can we develop a relationship with a Higher Power that is real, personal, and meaningful?

Because recovery isn't about having a perfect understanding of God.

It's about becoming willing to seek Him.

Discernment

One of the most valuable tools we gain in recovery is discernment—the ability to recognize the difference between what feels right and what is right.

Before recovery, many of us made decisions based on impulse, emotion, fear, resentment, pride, or immediate gratification. If we wanted something, we chased it. If we felt something, we reacted to it. The results often left us confused, hurt, and wondering why our lives kept getting harder.

Recovery teaches us to pause.

Discernment is that moment between impulse and action where we ask better questions. Is this decision based on fear or faith? Ego or humility? Self-will or principles? Short-term comfort or long-term growth?

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about discernment and why good judgment is essential to recovery. How do we learn to recognize healthy choices from unhealthy ones? How do we separate emotion from wisdom? And how can we avoid confusing what we want with what we actually need?

Because not every open door is the right door.

Sometimes wisdom isn't knowing what to do.

Sometimes wisdom is knowing what not to do.

Contempt Prior To Investigation

One of the quickest ways to stop growing is to decide we already know the answer before we've taken the time to understand the question.

"Contempt prior to investigation" is often called the greatest obstacle to human progress. In recovery, it shows up when we dismiss an idea, a person, a meeting, a sponsor, a step, or a spiritual concept before we've honestly examined it. We reject it not because we've investigated it, but because we've already decided what we think.

Many of us came into recovery with strong opinions. We knew what wouldn't work. We knew who couldn't help us. We knew what was wrong with AA, treatment, sponsors, God, meetings, and everybody else. The problem was that our best thinking had already brought us to a place where we desperately needed help.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about the danger of contempt prior to investigation. How many opportunities have we missed because we dismissed them too quickly? How often does pride keep us from learning something new? And what happens when we become willing to investigate before we judge?

Recovery often begins with a simple admission:

"Maybe I don't know everything."

Because growth doesn't come from defending what we already believe.

Growth comes from being willing to discover what we don't know.

Taming The Ego – Tradition Six

Tradition Six warns us about something that has derailed individuals, groups, and entire organizations for generations: ego.

AA's primary purpose is to carry its message to the alcoholic who still suffers. Yet history has shown that whenever we become distracted by prestige, money, property, outside enterprises, or public recognition, the mission begins to suffer. What starts as a good idea can slowly become a competition for attention, influence, or control.

The same thing happens in our personal recovery.

The ego tells us we need to be right. We need to be recognized. We need people to agree with us. We need credit. We need control. Recovery teaches us something different. It teaches us that humility is not thinking less of ourselves—it's thinking of ourselves less.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about Tradition Six and the challenge of taming the ego. How do we stay focused on our primary purpose? How do we avoid becoming distracted by things that seem important but ultimately pull us away from helping others? And how do we recognize when our ego has quietly taken the driver's seat?

Because the greatest threat to our recovery often isn't what comes from the outside.

It's what grows unchecked on the inside.

Meeting Others Where They Are At

One of the greatest challenges in recovery—and in life—is learning to stop meeting people where we think they should be and start meeting them where they actually are.

Many of us have good intentions. We want to help. We want people to see what we see. We want them to make better choices, avoid pain, and embrace the solution that helped us. But recovery taught us something important: people change when they're ready, not when we're ready for them to change.

The Big Book reminds us in Working With Others that our job isn't to force, convince, argue, or control. Our job is to share our experience, offer a hand, and leave the door open. We carry the message—not the person.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about what it means to truly meet others where they're at. Whether it's a newcomer, a family member, a friend, or someone struggling with life, real connection begins when we listen before we lecture and understand before we advise.

Because helping isn't about dragging people to where we are.

It's about being willing to walk beside them where they are.

We Can Only Work With The Truth

One of the hardest lessons in recovery is realizing that we can't change what we refuse to acknowledge. We can deny it, justify it, minimize it, blame it on other people, or pretend it isn't there—but none of those things move us forward.

The truth is the only thing we can work with.

The Big Book talks about honesty as the foundation of recovery. Before there can be awareness, acceptance, action, or accountability, there has to be truth. Not the truth we wish were true. Not the truth that makes us look good. The actual truth.

Many of us spent years running from reality. We blamed circumstances, relationships, jobs, childhoods, bad luck, and everyone around us. Recovery begins when we stop asking, "Who's at fault?" and start asking, "What's true?"

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about why honesty is the turning point. Why self-deception keeps us stuck. And why real freedom begins the moment we're willing to face reality exactly as it is.

Because healing doesn't happen when we feel better.

Healing happens when we get honest.

Is There A Substitute? Yes, There Is...

In A Vision For You, the Big Book asks one of the most important questions in all of recovery: "Is there no exception to this rule?" If alcohol was our solution, what could possibly replace it?

The answer comes a few pages later. The authors tell us that there is a substitute—and it is vastly more than that. It is a fellowship in Alcoholics Anonymous.

For years, many of us used alcohol to deal with fear, loneliness, resentment, boredom, anxiety, and life itself. Drinking wasn't just a habit; it became our answer to everything. When alcohol was removed, we were left with a huge question: Now what?

The Big Book's answer isn't simply meetings. It isn't just not drinking. The substitute is a new way of living. A fellowship. A Higher Power. A purpose. A connection with people who understand us. A life centered on helping others rather than escaping ourselves.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about the substitute described in A Vision For You. What replaces the obsession? What fills the void? And why did the founders believe that connection, service, and spiritual growth could accomplish what alcohol never could?

Because recovery isn't just about taking something away. It's about finding something better.

Our One And Only Purpose In AA

AA has many benefits. We build friendships. We find fellowship. We learn principles. We discover purpose. We heal relationships. But according to AA's traditions and the Big Book, none of those things are our primary purpose.

Our one and only purpose is simple: to stay sober and help other alcoholics achieve sobriety.

That's it.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about what happens when we keep the main thing the main thing. Why was AA built around a single purpose? What happens when groups drift away from that purpose? And how does focusing on helping the next suffering alcoholic protect our own sobriety?

The founders discovered something powerful: one alcoholic talking with another could accomplish what no lecture, punishment, or willpower ever could. Recovery is passed from person to person, one conversation at a time.

Because when AA remembers its primary purpose, the newcomer has the best chance of finding the solution that was freely given to us.

"Practical experience shows that nothing will so much insure immunity from drinking as intensive work with other alcoholics."

What Is Time In Recovery?

Time means something different in recovery than it does anywhere else. Before sobriety, many of us were either running from the past or obsessing about the future. We spent years regretting what happened yesterday or worrying about what might happen tomorrow, while completely missing the only moment we actually had: today.

Recovery teaches us a different relationship with time. We learn that healing takes time. Trust takes time. Growth takes time. Amends take time. Character development takes time. Yet at the same time, recovery reminds us that all we truly have is this moment and the choices we make right now.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about what time really means in recovery. Is it measured in years sober? Is it measured in spiritual growth? Is it measured one day at a time? Or is it something deeper than any of those?

Because recovery isn't about making up for lost time. It's about making the most of the time we have left.

The Essential Psychic Change

The Big Book tells us that recovery requires more than simply putting down the drink or drug. It speaks of an essential psychic change—a fundamental shift in the way we think, act, react, and experience life. Without that change, many of us found ourselves repeating the same patterns, facing the same problems, and wondering why nothing was getting better.

For years, we tried to change our circumstances while holding on to the same fears, resentments, selfishness, and old ideas that kept us stuck. Recovery challenges us to do something deeper. It asks us to change from the inside out.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about what the essential psychic change really means. Is it a spiritual awakening? A new way of thinking? A complete change in attitude and outlook? Maybe it's all of those things. The real question is: What had to change inside of us for recovery to become possible?

Because sobriety isn't just about removing alcohol or drugs from our lives. It's about becoming a different person than the one who needed them.

We Thought “Conditions” Drove Us To Drink

For a long time, many of us blamed everything outside ourselves for why we drank or used. Bad relationships. Stress. Money. Trauma. Work. Loneliness. Anger. Fear. Other people. And while those things absolutely affect us, the 12x12 reminds us that alcoholics often discover something uncomfortable: it wasn’t just the conditions driving us—it was the way we reacted to life itself.

Page 47 challenges the idea that changing external circumstances alone would solve the problem. Because a lot of us changed jobs, changed partners, changed cities, changed environments… and somehow brought the same internal chaos with us everywhere we went.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we’re talking about the difference between life happening around us and the internal condition that keeps pushing us toward escape. Recovery begins when we stop believing that peace only comes after the world behaves the way we want it to.

That doesn’t mean life isn’t hard. It doesn’t mean trauma or pain aren’t real. It means recovery asks us to look deeper than circumstances and begin changing the way we think, react, cope, and live.

Because if conditions alone caused alcoholism, then fixing the conditions would have fixed us a long time ago.

Restored To Sanity?

Step Two asks a powerful question that still hits hard today: What does sanity actually look like? Because a lot of us thought insanity only meant extreme behavior, while completely ignoring the destructive thinking patterns we kept repeating over and over again.

Doing the same things expecting different results. Running back to what hurts us. Letting resentment, fear, ego, control, and self-destruction drive the car. Recovery begins when we finally admit that maybe our thinking—not just our circumstances—needs restoration too.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we’re talking about what it means to be restored to sanity in recovery and in life. Not perfection. Not becoming emotionless. But learning to think more clearly, respond differently, and stop making decisions from chaos, impulse, fear, and pain.

Because insanity is not always loud. Sometimes it looks like repeating the same patterns while hoping this time will somehow be different.

Eternal Values

Everything around us changes. Circumstances change. People change. Emotions change. Seasons change. Even our own thinking can shift from one day to the next. So the question becomes: what actually stays steady?

Today on The Daily Trudge, we’re talking about eternal values—the principles that outlast feelings, trends, circumstances, and whatever chaos life decides to throw at us. Things like honesty, integrity, humility, service, courage, compassion, accountability, and faith.

Recovery teaches us that if we build our lives only on feelings, comfort, or convenience, we get shaky fast. But when we anchor ourselves to deeper principles, we make better decisions even when emotions are loud and life feels uncertain.

Values aren’t just nice ideas we post online—they’re the things that guide how we live when nobody’s watching and when life gets hard.

Because temporary feelings make terrible compasses.

The Four A’s To Recovery

Recovery doesn’t usually fall apart because we don’t know better. It falls apart because we stop doing the basics that keep us grounded. Today on The Daily Trudge, we’re talking about a simple framework that can help us get honest, get unstuck, and move forward: The Four A’s.

Awareness – What’s really going on? What am I feeling, avoiding, rationalizing, or pretending not to see? Recovery starts with honesty.

Acceptance – Once I see the truth, can I accept reality instead of fighting it? Acceptance doesn’t mean approval—it means stopping the war with what already is.

Action – Awareness without movement changes nothing. What is the next right step? Not the perfect step. The next one.

Accountability – Who knows what I’m doing? Who can challenge me, support me, and call me out when I start drifting?

Recovery gets complicated when we overthink it. Sometimes the answer is getting back to simple, practical principles that actually create change.

Is It A Problem, Or An Opportunity?

Life has a funny way of handing us situations that feel like absolute disasters in the moment—plans fall apart, people disappoint us, doors close, unexpected problems show up, and our first reaction is usually, “Well, this is terrible.”

But what if not every problem is just a problem? What if some of the hardest moments in recovery and life are actually invitations to grow, change direction, get honest, become more resilient, or learn something we wouldn’t have learned otherwise?

That doesn’t mean pretending painful things are fun. It doesn’t mean toxic positivity. Some situations are genuinely hard. But recovery teaches us that our perspective matters. The same event can become bitterness… or a breakthrough. A setback… or a setup for growth.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we’re talking about the difference between reacting to life as if everything is happening to us, versus asking whether something might actually be happening for our growth.

Gratitude Should Move Forward

Today’s Daily Reflection reminds us that gratitude isn’t meant to be a passive feeling—it’s meant to become action. It’s easy to say we’re grateful for sobriety, grateful for second chances, grateful for the people who helped us… but if gratitude never changes how we live, is it really doing much?

Recovery teaches us that gratitude is not just looking backward at what we survived. It’s moving forward with responsibility, humility, and purpose because of what we’ve been given. Real gratitude shows up in how we treat people, how we stay accountable, how we serve others, and how we keep walking even when life gets hard.

Because gratitude isn’t just “Thank God I made it.”
It’s also “Now what am I going to do with this life?”

If gratitude only keeps us looking in the rearview mirror, we miss the road in front of us. Today we’re talking about turning gratitude into momentum, action, and growth.

Spiritual Malady, First

A lot of us spent years trying to fix the outside while ignoring what was broken on the inside. Change the job. Change the relationship. Change the circumstances. Change the city. Change the substance. And somehow… the same unrest kept showing up.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we’re talking about the spiritual malady—the inner condition that often sits underneath the chaos. Because recovery isn’t just about removing substances or behaviors; it’s about addressing the deeper emptiness, resentment, fear, selfishness, disconnection, and restlessness that keep driving us back into unhealthy patterns.

When the spiritual condition improves, thinking starts to clear. Reactions change. Relationships shift. Peace becomes possible. But if we only treat the symptoms and ignore the root, we often end up right back where we started.

This isn’t about religion. It’s about the condition of the spirit—whatever that means for you—and what happens when we stop trying to heal internal pain with external fixes.

Recovery Is About Community, Not Government Grants

Recovery was never meant to be a paperwork process. It was never supposed to be reduced to funding streams, contracts, billing codes, or programs that forget the human being sitting in front of them. At its core, recovery has always been about people helping people. Connection. Shared experience. Hope passed from one struggling human to another.

Today on The Daily Trudge, we’re talking about the difference between institutional support and real community. Because while funding can build programs, it doesn’t automatically build belonging. Grants may help create services—but they cannot replace authentic connection, mentorship, accountability, and people who genuinely care whether you make it.

This isn’t about attacking resources. It’s about remembering what actually changes lives. Recovery often begins when someone says, “Me too. Sit down. You’re not alone.”

If we lose community, we risk building systems that serve numbers instead of people.

The Four Agreements

Today on The Daily Trudge, we’re stepping a little outside the usual recovery lane and talking about a book that has helped a lot of people rethink how they move through life: The Four Agreements.

Simple ideas. Hard practice.

Be impeccable with your word.
Don’t take anything personally.
Don’t make assumptions.
Always do your best.

Sounds straightforward… until real life shows up. Until somebody says something that hits a nerve. Until expectations get weird. Until your brain starts writing stories with zero evidence. Until your “best” looks nothing like yesterday’s.

Recovery and personal growth have a lot in common with these principles because both ask us to get honest, clean up our thinking, and stop letting old patterns run the show.

If you’ve ever struggled with resentment, assumptions, overthinking, people-pleasing, taking everything personally, or just trying to live a little lighter, this conversation is for you.

A Tradition Born Of Our Anonymity

Today on The Daily Trudge, we’re talking about one of the most misunderstood and most important principles in recovery: anonymity. Not secrecy. Not shame. Humility. Protection. Equality.

Anonymity reminds us that no one person is bigger than the message. No personality outranks the principles. Recovery works because we meet each other as human beings—not titles, status, followers, accomplishments, or failures.

This tradition protects the newcomer. It protects the fellowship. And maybe most importantly, it protects us from our own ego. Because the moment recovery becomes about image, recognition, or personal importance, we start drifting away from what actually keeps people well.

Today we’re digging into why anonymity matters, what it was meant to protect, and how humility still plays a critical role in recovery culture today.

This episode actually aired before Covid and was one of our only in person interviews. I had taken it down while Angelle was going through some personal things but she asked I put it back up. Why? BECAUSE WE DO RECOVER!

This is our first podcast together and I think it turned out great. My daughter and I have been through a lot including me being an absent father. Even though it still hurts a little we are willing to talk about it if it helps others. This is an introduction and little bit about us. Please give us feedback and let us know what you think.

Thank you

Another episode of RAW Recovery coming your way. Today we Jillian who also attends my home group. Recently hitting a year she decided to share her story with us. It is proof that not everyone knows about AA and that God protects even we are being destructive to ourselves.

This podcast is about spirituality and how it can come in many different forms. The Big Book states that we should see where religion is right only to find out that many times they believe like we do! We find that God does not make hard terms for those who honestly seek.

They seem to have been born with it... This is a statement on page 58 of the Big Book. Lucas had great parents and a good upbringing. But Alcoholism is the great equalizer and God had other plan. I had a great time talking with Lucas and we had a lot of fun while educating others. Thank you Lucas.

What is great about storytelling is that we get so see how our lives are the same even though they were different. Getting to point where we no longer blame our parents is the theme of this podcast. Shelly did a great job and the hour flew on by. Enjoy!

Big Book Thumping Episode 7 (How it works to page 63)

The intention of this series is to help you through the first 63 pages of the Big Book. I found there are a lot of people in the rooms who have a sponsor that did not cover the first 63 pages. So, I saw a need to help others with my own experience. My hope is that it helps and informs you.

Another great story that I find very diverse. I find each time that our lives differ a lot but we tend to feel the same way. We experience a loneliness that few others really understand. Sometimes our drinking does not happen until later in life and sometimes we are double dippers. Come listen to Kell's story a close friend and wonderful musician. God ain't recovery great?

The best part about having parents in the program is the we tend to get sober at an earlier age since the seed has been planted. Being born with the disease we will never be able to avoid the temptation and what comes after of the first drink. I saw SaSa share a part of her story on FB and found her courage and honesty refreshing. I new that she would be a great speaker with experience, strength and hope. Enjoy.

Today we have the Director of The Pueblo Rescue Mission. Alcoholism is a family disease and effects everyone in the family. Today Melanie tells her story of why she does what she does. We had a great talk about equity and meeting others where they are at.

This is also an introduction to the new podcast coming out with The Pueblo Rescue Mission. It will be hosted by myself and Melanie and will contain success stories and education for others. Beyond that we bring what is going on in the community and the changes that we can make.

Fear, Shame and the guilt that comes with addiction can lead to a loneliness that only we know. Wishing for the jumping of place, the end. We think we are terminally unique and rightly fully so! When we enter the rooms we find other just like ourselves and loneliness can turn into hope. Our speaker Amber talks about just this. Taking a past that was ugly and making it gold to help others.

Life can be tough as it is and when the holidays come it is easy to get caught in the hustle and bustle of the season. Today Dr. Jenkins and I talk about the stress of the holidays and some helpful hints to keep you centered.

Doctor Jenkins is a Licensed Psychologist who obtained her Doctorate of Philosophy in Clinical Psychology from Wichita State University in 2011. She has experience with a broad range of intervention  and assessment in the field and  experience working  with  religiously and ethnically diverse populations with a full spectrum of diagnostic concerns and degrees of severity across life phases. In her  practice her intervention may  include  CBT, DBT and ACT modalities. In her coaching practice she works to help women eliminate  emotional eating by teaching a  series of educational lessons in a 10 week workshop.  These  lessons have been collected from years of experience observing women's relationship with food combined with evidence based knowledge in what  works to help a person with disorderly eating patterns.

The world of addiction is never a straight line. It has twist and turns that we need to learn how to navigate. Cilla M. is our guest on this episode of RAW Recovery. I had the chance to listen to her speak at a Mobilize Recovery event and new she would be a great fit. It had been a few weeks when she reached out about shadowing me at Detox. This was God's way of saying. Hey Dion you were supposed to ask so he put her back in my life. Last but not least just look at that happy family in the picture.

Trudging Together is non for profit so donations are always welcome. No amount is too little. Thank you

We are back with Podcasting. Today we bring our first in many professional's series. We would like to give Dr. Jenkins for contributing her time to helping us educate others. We covered several things with food addiction. Including moderation and self boundaries. I learned a lot about my own recovery from alcohol. It just shows once again the recovery is for everyone.

Today's episode of RAW Recovery features Kara Brucato. I am very glad I asked Kara to be on. She lives in Michigan where they are doing some great things. Things I think we should all replicate. Beyond that Kara is very empathetic and you can hear it in here speaking. Grab a cup of coffee sit back and relax.

I really liked Kellan Fluckiger was his FB description, Catalyst, Coach, Lover of People. Kellan has published 7 books with another coming out soon. From a $3000 a week drug habit to helping 1000's of people. This is a very straight forward podcast and well worth the listen.

It is podcasts like these that make me feel blessed. Blessed that others are so willing to tell their RAW story. Today, we bring you Deana M. I know Deana from my home group and I asked her to be on the podcast for a few reasons. You can tell how much she cares about the program and her story was a different and we needed to hear it. Then she came on and blew me away. Thank you so much Deana!

Can you spare a dollar or two to help us bring you more speakers?

Autumn Rock and I decided to hit the record button the other day while we were talking. We had a great conversation and touched on what recovery equity looks like. This is newer topic for me and I had a lot of fun discussing it. Autumn and I will be having more conversations like this in the upcoming weeks.
