Student Led Podcast for NELR
North East Law Review (NELR) is a student run Law Review from Newcastle University, est in January 2013.
This student led podcast has invited a variety of special guests, from academics to legal professionals, to speak on a wide range of topics all to do with the law.
In the last episode of season 3, Scarlett co-hosts with fellow third-year student, Josh Cela. They discuss the recent intellectual property case Lidl v Tesco with Professor Alison Firth, visiting lecturer at Newcastle. Alison's research includes IP law's interaction with other areas of law, such as contract, competition law, civil and criminal procedure.
In the second part of Shah Yaseen Ali's mini-series on governance at Newcastle University, Scarlett welcomes him back to host Nick Collins, who is the Executive Director of Finance. As current President of the Student Union, Yaseen asks questions about budgets and fees at Newcastle.
In this episode, Scarlett sits down with Larissa Hope-Rogers, Newcastle's University of Law Campus Manager. They discuss her career in practice and her experience with applications. Larissa also gives a very helpful insight into the LPC vs SQE debate.
In this episode Scarlett welcomes guest-host Shah Yaseen Ali to interview Simon Meacher, who is head of executive and governance at Newcastle University.
In this episode Scarlett discusses private law and teaching methods with Newcastle University lecturer, Dr Christine Beuermann. They discuss her new, unconventional, module, 'Private Law Remedies' and its success in its inaugural year.
The North East Law Review is back with a third season! In this introduction, host Scarlett sits down with Dr Ruth Houghton, academic lead for the NELR (and recent winner of Law Teacher of the Year at the 2023 Northern Law Awards). They discuss what is to come this season, and the future of the NELR.

They discuss Andrew’s case comment on R v BM and relating case law. We would like to emphasise that this is a discussion on consent law only, we do not consider the other pertinent issues present in many of these cases, and comments should be taken only in the context of this law. Niamh and Matt talk to Newcastle Law School's Dr Sarah Morley about an interesting multidisciplinary piece of work she is leading called the Novel Beings Project. Sarah is specifically looking at the development of regulation to deal with novel beings such as Synthetic Genome Technologies and Artificial Intelligence.
