Next time you are in Broadus, Montana, you may notice some new artwork as you drive past the Broadus Corner Store...where two young ladies from Kirby, Montana have spent the past few months creating a giant mural that celebrates some of the history of Powder River County.
The creator is Miah Chalfant, a Northern Cheyenne artist who told KGHL that her mural honors the history of homesteading and the enduring presence of indigenous peoples in Powder River Country.
The 15-foot by 60-foot mural named “PA’EO’HE’E (Powder River), The Good Hunting Grounds”, depicts a faded parchment page from the 1920 US Census for Powder River County, overlaid by a herd of 13 colorful bison, with the images of two of the most famous Cheyenne Chiefs, Dull Knife and Little Wolf.

On Monday September 22nd a huge crowd gathered in downtown Broadus to celebrate the completion of the project made possible by the “Building a Better Broadus” pilot Community Tourism Grant from the Montana Department Commerce Office of Tourism. Local supporters include the Broadus Corner Store, Yellowstone Bank, the School Community Development Council, and the Kingsley History Project.

A journey of healing begins. On Monday, September 22, a historic event occurred at Broadus, MT, where 150 people representing Powder River County and the Northern Cheyenne joined to celebrate the unveiling of a mural at the Broadus Corner Store. The mural commemorates the Northern Cheyenne, and was created by Northern Cheyenne artist Miah Chalfant Realbird at the request of the Kingsley History Project.
A small pioneer town named Kingsley once existed near what is now Broadus, where many conflicts occurred between the Cheyenne, Sioux and U.S. Calvary. The Kingsley History Project has the mission of making that a historic site and wishes to involve the Northern Cheyenne and Sioux peoples in that effort.
Thirty-six Northern Cheyenne tribal elders, including traditional Chief Leon Seminole and Tribal President Gene Small attended and even provided rides for some elders to get to the event.
Speakers included: Shawnee Realbird, a pilot (first Indian woman in Montana to do that); photojournalist; and poet; Miah Chalfant Real Bird (Artist); Leo Seminole (Prayer); Henry Real Bird (Former Poet Laureate of Montana); Jade Sooktis,Northern Cheyenne (Montana State Rep. District 41); Tribal President Gene Small and warrior society headsman; Kingsley History Project: John Amsden; Mina Seminole (the Reynolds Battle); a Broadus County Commissioner; and Clara Caufield, Chair, Northern Cheyenne Elderly Commission.
All the speakers addressed the need for healing and forgiveness between the two diverse communities of Broadus and Northern Cheyenne. They all have historical roots and ties to that area, it being the site of many engagements between the military, Northern Cheyenne and Sioux, especially the Reynolds Battle, 1976, a great precursor and influence upon the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Perhaps, not all people in each community will agree, but the leaders have decided that 150 years is long enough to hold a grudge.
As one speaker reminded, our forebearers were human beings, caught in the grip of historical forces beyond their control, both sides trying to do what was right for them at the time.

The Northern Cheyenne people made history this week.
After meeting privately for several hours on Thursday, the Cheyenne Chiefs Council in an unprecedented action drafted a declaration calling for the use of traditional tribal law to remove many of the currently elected members of Tribal Council, along with several Staff, and ban them from ever serving again.
Since those members had barricaded themselves inside the Littlewolf Capitol Building, the center of Cheyenne tribal government, along with an illegal Security Force, those Chiefs demanded the offices to be opened back up to the public, and the private Security members removed.
The issue came to a head last week after a questionable meeting of the council, where members passed a resolution to urge removal of Cheyenne President Gene Small, in an action that was later disapproved by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. President Small was pressured because he wants to see a forensic audit of some $90 million in federal ARPA and Covid funds.
To explain exactly what happened, Robert McClean called into Voices of Montana on Friday September to talk with Tom Schultz and Taylor Brown on the statewide radio program.
Robert McLean, Jr. is not Cheyenne, but a highly respected local community leader trusted by tribal members. McLean is a former Principal of Lame Deer Elementary School, former Superintendent at Wyola and St. Labre Schools, and more recently the Lay Advocate at Northern Cheyenne Tribal Court.
Gene Small began his first 4-year term as the new President of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe less than a year ago, in November 2024.
His support for an official Audit of the $90 million that the Cheyenne Tribe received in recent years through federal Covid and ARPA funds, has now stirred a call for his removal.
On Monday August 18, tempers flared at the regular TribalCouncil Meeting, resulting physical violence and some arrests.

Lions Club will be serving their famous BBQ Beef and BBQ Chicken dinners. Local organizations will be serving hamburgers, tacos, nachos, pie/ice cream, and soft drinks. This is Lockwood High School’s first year to have a Business Professionals of America (BPA) student organization. In one of their first projects, those BPA students who are in the Photo and Video II class are showcasing their talents in Photography and Video Design, by creating and printing a Lockwood School Calendar that will include specific events and happenings in the 2025-26 school year.
Five Lockwood BPA Members visited the KGHL Studios on April 22nd to promote the Lockwood Calendar project, which they plan to offer for sale by mid-May.
The new Lockwood BPA has had a busy first year:

· Promoting a “Reality Fair” hosted by Valley Federal Credit Union for Lockwood Business Students in December
· Raising $1,500 in Concessions work

Par Pacific, the parent company of Lockwood’s Par Montana Refinery has announced several leadership changes.
Taylor Brown interviews Kim Jakub to learn about her new promotion into the regional role of Senior Vice President of Rocky Mountain Refining, which includes refineries both Par Pacific in Lockwood, and their Wyoming Refining Company in Newcastle, Wyoming.
Meanwhile, Par Montana’s current Technicaland Engineering Manager, Jeff Dusch has been promoted to become Refinery Managerfor the Lockwood facility, which produces gasoline, diesel, and asphalt, with acapacity of 63,000 barrels per day. TheLockwood refinery will celebrate its 75th Anniversary in 2024.
Last year five students from Winnett High School convinced their School Board to let them start the school’s first ever Ag Ed program and FFA Chapter. Now with an on-line curriculum, and acommunity volunteer Advisor, they are already studying and competing in FFA contests.

In this interview Byrd describes his second project with MCA Records, "No Ordinary Man", where the first single "Lifestyle's of the Not so Rich and Famous" reached #4, followed by another top five hit, "The First Step", then the chart-topping hit "Watermelon Crawl". The release of the 4th single on this project was "The Keeper of the Star's" which shot to #1 on the singles charts and pushed the album to Double Platinum Status, which certifies sales of over 2 Million Copies. "The Keeper of the Star's" won Academy of Country Music's "Song of the Year" award in 1995.
Later with RCA Records, Byrd's third #1 single was "10 Rounds with Jose Cuervo", on his way to 6 Gold Albums.

KGHL's Taylor Brown spoke to Sarah Calhoun about the Red Ants Pants Music Festival, a 100% homegrown, volunteer-driven event based in White Sulfur Springs, Montana….with the goal of bringing good folks together to celebrate rural Montana.
The mission of the 501(c)(3) Red Ants Pants Foundation is to develop and expand leadership roles for women, preserve and support working family farms and ranches, and enrich and promote rural communities.
The proceeds from the festival to fund their community grants, timber skills workshops and Girls Leadership Program.

Exit 53 will come back on stage for our After Party and will entertain the crowd until 1:00 am. The concert will be held in the beautiful, 7-acre Homesteader Park.

Erl Barsness moved to Montana from Minnesota nearly 60 years ago to work for the Lolo National Forest. Later as the News Director for KULR-8 Television in Billings he met Conrad Burns, and when Conrad started a state radio network known as the Northern Broadcasting System in 1975, they decided that Erl should produce a daily outdoor show for NBS that they named “The Outdoorsman”.
Later, Erl was the State News Anchor for the Network, and then spent several years with KGHL Radio and the Intermountain Network, plus was a Realtor, and worked with Kampgrounds of America. In 1992 Erl Barsness began producing the daily outdoor radio show, known as “Shadow of the Rockies”, and for the next 30+ years he brought outdoor news to radio stations across Montana and Wyoming. In this interview with Taylor Brown, the two reminisce about Erl’s long career in broadcasting.

Every August the Antique Tractor Club hosts a threshing bee at the Huntley Project Museum. Hands on learning, fun and food starts at 9 am and goes all day! The South Central Montana Antique Tractor & Machinery Association was formed in 1987. It seems the years here in Musselshell County continue to test everyone. The fires just won’t stop for our state, drought has attacked the lands and ranchers suffer with loss of crops. These are times one has to wonder if there is any relief in sight. Our hopes do continue and we all strive to endure these challenges as they are handed out. One relies on simple happy events to get us all through.
We all look for those joyous moments through life and it seems the simple things remain consistant. These flashes are once again evident at the Rehder homestead, as things are planned for the Homestead Holidays. The best laid plans seemed to get ravaged last year through an unprecedented outbreak of Covid plus a snowstorm that led us to cancel the prepared pleasurable times. This year we look forward to opening our doors and plans set to see everyone again. We definitely missed so many of you.
