Welcome to the Recovery Stories podcast, bringing you stories of hope, healing and triumph over adversity, addictions, mental health struggles, trauma and dysfunctional family systems. Our courageous storytellers have chosen to live their journey out loud in order to show others that they don't have to suffer in silence. The stories you will hear are raw, real and may involve graphic and triggering content. This podcast is brought to you by Promises Behavioral Health's Rooted Alumni Community.
In recognition of National Recovery Month, Charles Kelley - co-founding member of legendary country trio, Lady A, and his wife, Cassie Kelley joined host, Patrick Custer for a special episode of the Rooted Recovery Stories podcast in front of a live audience at SoHo House theatre in Nashville, TN. Charles discusses his battle with alcoholism, the lowest moments of his life and how he has able to rise above it. Cassie discusses the less talked about topic regarding the families, friends and spouses of those in addiction and paints their real-life picture of how it is not just the alcoholic, but a family disease.
We are so grateful for the opportunity to have conducted this interview with these two inspiring people and with great respect that we offer this vulnerable and intimate look inside their story of trials and hope for you now!
About Charles Kelley & Cassie Kelley:
Charles, one third of the award-winning group Lady A, recently marked two years of sobriety. He first opened up about his decision to focus on his health in August 2022, when Lady A postponed a tour to support his “journey to sobriety,” they shared at the time. Charles has since spoken publicly about his decision and debuted the song “As Far As You Could,” which he called his “goodbye letter to alcohol.” Cassie has also shared her perspective in interviews and discusses why they’ve opted to publicly share their story. She talks about the impact of alcoholism on the family. She's honest and vulnerable and hopes her journey helps others in navigating this difficult road.

On this week’s episode of Rooted Recovery Stories, Patrick is joined by the lovely, talented and hilarious Tayla Lynn, granddaughter of country music legend and icon, Loretta Lynn. All this and more on this episode!
We would love to hear from you! Email us at ROOTED@PROMISES.COM
About Tayla Lynn!
There is a bright eyed enthusiasm to singer/songwriter Tayla Lynn that cannot be denied. There is a warmth in her voice, truth behind her piercing blue eyes, and genuine affection when she speaks of her history, her family and friends, and most of all her art. Born into one of Nashville’s greatest musical dynasties, Lynn’s passion for singing and performing was sparked from an early age watching Loretta Lynn and Ernest Ray Lynn. She was four the first time Loretta Lynn took her on stage.
Signed to Skyville Records in 2007, Lynn’s first major musical project was the trio Stealing Angels with Caroline Cutbirth and Jennifer Wayne. Her first solo project, The Ranch, released in 2016, was the culmination of a move across the country, addiction, recovery, a lot of hard work, and a dash of her grandmother, Loretta Lynn. She writes and sings her truth about love, healing, motherhood, and the coal dust that runs through her Kentucky veins. Lynn’s album on Heart of Texas Records, 'Tayla Lynn sings Loretta Lynn', is available everywhere!

About Loretta Lynn:
Loretta Lynn has long been established as the undisputed Queen of Country Music, with more than 60 years of recording and touring to her name. A self-taught guitarist and songwriter, Lynn shook up Nashville by writing her own songs which tackled boundary-pushing topics drawn from her own life experiences as a wife and mother. “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” “Fist City” and “Don’t Come Home A’ Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind)” are just three of 16 country No. 1 singles.
Inducted into more music Halls of Fame than any female recording artist, including The Country Music Hall of Fame & Songwriters Hall of Fame, and was the first woman to be named the Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year in 1972. Lynn received Kennedy Center Honors, a Presidential Medal of Freedom and was named recipient of Billboard’s inaugural Women in Music “Legend” Award. With 18 nominations, Lynn has won four Grammy Awards, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010. She has sold more than 45 million records worldwide.
Still Woman Enough, Lynn’s 50th studio album (excluding her 10 collaborations with Conway Twitty) became her latest. In it she celebrates women in country music, including a cover of “Keep On The Sunny Side” and a new interpretation of her very first single, “I’m A Honky Tonk Girl".

On this episode of Rooted Recovery Stories, Patrick sits down with singer-songwriter, Chris Housman. They discuss the difficulties of growing up gay in the heart of the conservative South, and how lonely of a feeling it is having no one to talk to. Chris opens up for the first time about the sexual assault he endured as a teenager and the internal battle that eventually led him to contact the family of the man who assaulted him. While the country artist is celebrating the triumphant release of his debut album 'Blueneck' and the widespread attention he’s getting for the steamy music video for his current single “Guilty as Sin,” he also finds himself mourning the loss of a past love.__________________About Chris Housman: If Harlan Howard was right when he said “country music is three chords and the truth”, then Chris Housman is one of the best qualified artists working in Country today. Beyond the classic twang, rich six string backed sound, and disarming Kansas baritone, his offerings in the genre gently, yet unapologetically, speak his truth at every turn. As an openly gay country artist, he thoughtfully marries two worlds that, to many, are at odds with one another. Whether it’s the fable-like “Drag Queen” which celebrates a small town teacher of the year who goes from Michael to Michelle after hours, or the viral sensation “Blueneck”, a welcoming homespun manifesto that proudly declares “y’all means all”, Housman’s music offers a musical bridge in a divided time. Called “irresistible” by Rolling Stone, with Good Morning America praising him for “making waves”, and Billboard staunchly affirming him as a saving grace for “outcasts in the genre,” Housman’s message, embodied in his upcoming debut album “Blueneck”, is a simple one: Country is for everyone. Given his 4.5 million streams and 230,000 online followers, it's clearly a message that the world wants to hear.We would love to hear from you! On this week’s episode of Rooted Recovery Stories, Patrick sits down with Hollywood’s go-to stunt woman, Kimberly Shannon Murphy. As an award-winning stuntwoman, she was intimate with pain. For years, she propelled her body through dangerous spaces—medicating the trauma of her childhood sexual abuse with the adrenaline rush that came from pushing herself to the absolute limit. But as Kimberly learned, no matter how much you suppress your past, it always catches up with you.
In her new book, Glimmer, Kimberly details her remarkable journey to the top of her field as a Hollywood stuntwoman for many A-list celebrities, including Cameron Diaz, Charlize Theron, Angelina Jolie, Taylor Swift, and Sandra Bullock, while carrying the pain of her childhood of sexual abuse in a family that refused to acknowledge its reality. In her beautifully written, unflinchingly honest memoir, Kimberly reflects on her past and present, chronicling her path to recovery and calculating the long shadow of trauma.
Her story of surviving abuse and her journey to healing herself is both jarring and profound, and her strength is second to no one. She is a gift who anyone needs a reminder that true healing is possible, and that your relationship with your inner child is critical to that recovery process. She has learned to protect herself at all costs, and lets the viewer know that there is light on the other side of the darkness.
About Kimberly Shannon Murphy:
Kimberly Shannon Murphy is Hollywood’s go to Stunt Double for Premier Silver Screen actresses. Her resume is loaded with top box office films such as The Lone Ranger, Oblivion, Jack Reacher, Hunger Games, Savages, Men in Black 3, Knight and Day and the list goes on.
About her book
Glimmer: A Story of Survival, Hope, and Healing
Glimmer is the story of one woman’s quest to reclaim her life and to shine a spotlight on the dark topic of intergenerational familial abuse. As Kimberly reveals, being strong isn’t about getting your black belt, leaping out of four-story buildings, or putting 200-pound stuntmen in chokeholds—it’s about waking up every single morning and choosing to love yourself, no matter your history.
A heroic and hopeful story of stolen innocence, pain, courage, and survival, Glimmer is an emotional roadmap for others who have suffered abuse and childhood trauma, offering them hope, healing, and inspiration.
Reviews
'This book is so much more than the sum of its parts. It is a gift. It is Kimberly's offering to readers suffering in silence. It is a companion for anyone who has endured trauma, at any level. And it is a beautiful tribute to the strength and power of the human spirit.' — Cameron Diaz
“An intimate and vulnerable portrait of the long-term impacts of our most painful childhood experiences, Glimmer is a beautifully written and empowering story of resilience that offers a glimmer of hope for all survivors of childhood abuse and trauma.” — Nicole LePera, Ph.D., author of the number one New York Times bestseller How to Do the Work

On this week’s episode of Rooted Recovery Stories, Patrick Custer is joined by the HomeReno expert and social media mogul, Daniel "Handy Dan" Sugden. And let us just say, it is FAR from boring. The two cover deep topics, including Daniel’s growing up without his dad and the impact it had on his development and decisions. He explains his prior need for attention and the detrimental effect of having friends who care about you for the wrong reasons. As many of us know, the root of addiction stems from a need to belong. Daniel talks about the fact that addiction is a “progressive disease,” and how out of all the people in his life, his accountant led him to be “sober curious.” Patrick and Daniel share their experiences and what ultimately led to overhauling their lives and redesigning them. They touch on EMDR, meditation, and visualization as vital tools to maintain sobriety and to continue to grow into the best, most authentic version of yourself. Also, guys… We have GOT to talk about your spending on skincare. It’s getting out of control :)—--------We would love to hear from you! In this week’s episode of Rooted Recovery Stories, we're very excited to welcome our guest, Walker Hayes, a father, husband, and country music star, shares his story in conversation with Patrick Custer and co-host Brad Schmitt. Brad, who is entering over a decade of sobriety, is a writer for The Tennessean and has called Nashville home for many years. Patrick, Brad, and Walker dive into the daily realities of addiction and sobriety and discuss their views on human nature, faith, and spirituality.
Walker is the youngest of nine children, so he did not have the typical busy home life since many of his siblings were already out on their own. His early identity was found through sports, but he discovered early on that he also loved music despite it not being the “cool” thing to do at school. Walker’s alcohol use began as a way to have fun with older friends, relieve anxiety, and gain confidence when talking to girls, but later in life, his addiction reached a turning point one day when he realized the negative effects his body was facing. While developing his faith in God, Walker began winning the everyday battle that fighting addiction brings while learning how to be present with his family and music career without the use of substances.

His story goes from a charmed childhood and high school keg parties in the woods, to intense college parties and attempts to hide addiction while maintaining a marriage.Zac Clark’s addiction journey began as a teenager trying to have fun and party with friends, but initially, Zac felt that there was no problem that needed to be addressed. Later, the discovery, removal, and pain medicines received after a brain tumor added new elements to his addiction. His addiction eventually grew to the point where family intervened to convince him to seek treatment. Relapsing after one round of treatment and attempting to steal from his father, led to another round of treatment that would get him on a permanent path to recovery.Zac now aids others on their road to recovery through his business Release Recovery, and he tries to keep himself in touch with the world outside of addiction by traveling to Philadelphia from New York City to attend 76ers and Eagles games. We would love to hear from you! Renowned scholar and social worker, Matt Jackman, joins Rooted Recovery Stories Podcast with Patrick Custer this week to discuss their complex and victorious journey growing up in the Australian foster care system, processing gender dysphoria and sexuality while grappling with trauma and identity and becoming an international mental health advocate with their organization TACFLE (The Australian Centre for Lived Experience). Matt Jackman is a nonbinary queer person from Melbourne, Australia who opened the doors regarding mental health labeling and treatment. Growing up in the Foster Care system, they dealt with harsh struggles and traumas that come with abusive parental figures and a suicidal mother. Matt was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder but does not label themselves with those terms. Matt works to challenge the biological and medical model in mental health, speaking on topics about the monetization and the medical model seeking to blame individuals for their own diagnoses. Instead of labeling themselves as mentally ill. They travel the world as a consultant to The World Health Organization educating others on the overmedicalization of the LGBTQIA+ community and the need for social justice reform to address this issue. Matt identifies as mad, a powerful label and movement that represents empowerment and self-liberty to diagnosed individuals. We would love to hear from you! This week, Tox Josh joins Rooted Recovery Stories with Patrick Custer to discuss Josh's rise in the aesthetics industry, struggle with a near-death experience, the inner and outer battle with body dysmorphia and the tremendously difficult task of trying to overcome shame.
Joshua Davis, BSN, RN, is the founder and creative master-mind behind ToxJosh Studios. Josh’s vision for ToxJosh studios started when he saw the need for a creative outlet for aesthetic providers who are passionate about holistic transformations. The TJS team is dedicated to helping patients discover the best version of themselves - inside and out.
In the aesthetics or beauty industry, it is easy to get derailed by unrealistic expectations created by the images we are constantly bombarded with on television, social media, etc. I wanted to create a place where people could come and feel safe to discover the best version of themselves. I strongly believe there has to be an inner transformation that comes with any aesthetic work - at the end of the day, I want to help each of my patients be able to look in the mirror and truly LOVE who they see looking back.
Joshua Davis, BSN, RN, received his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Belmont University, and Bachelor of Musical Arts from Vanderbilt University. Joshua started his nursing career in Trauma ICU & Multi-Specialty Critical Care and transitioned into Aesthetics & Management in 2012. With his meticulous eye to detail and naturalism in aesthetics, Josh’s work soon began to be recognized on social media outlets, being voted in the Top 100 Injectors in the United States in 2018 through 2022, appointed to the Merz Aesthetics Advisory Board in 2019, and a Independent Consultant for Prollenium, and a KOL for Cartessa.
Better known as Tox Josh, he has quickly become a social media icon in the field of aesthetics, performing Instagram takeovers for major industry companies, has motivated audiences for aesthetic professional organizations around the world, and has helped create Social Media Network Groups with some of the top social media influencers in the industry.

Country Music artist Frank Ray joins Rooted Recovery Stories with Patrick Custer this week to discuss his improbable and tumultuous path into the country music scene, the intense trauma and moral complexities he encountered as a police officer of over 10 years, fulfilling childhood dreams and the release of his major debut album.
Frank Ray is a former police officer, Texas chart-topper, and bilingual recording artist opening doors for a modern Latino Country movement. Growing up both enriched in his Mexican culture, three miles from the border in New Mexico and surrounded by Country music in Texas, Frank was immersed in the best of both worlds and has been harmonizing the two since. Described as “easygoing contemporary Country with pop-soul hooks and a dash of Southwestern spice” (Rolling Stone) Frank’s music is a blend-drawing influences from ’90s Texas Country, Latin, R&B and Pop. As an entertainer, Frank delivers engaging, high-energy performances that have a little something for everyone. It’s with this cross-cultural appeal and his panorama of influences that the Los Angeles Times proclaims Ray “is looking to stretch Country music’s cultural boundaries.” In the three short years since embarking on his musical journey full-time, he has racked up two No. 1 singles and three Top ten singles on Texas Country Radio, become a staff songwriter, landed Frank Rogers as his producer, signed a record deal with BBR Music Group/Stoney Creek Records and much more. In addition to being named an “Artist to Watch” by Rolling Stone, Ray has appeared on USA Network’s Real Country, been profiled in the Los Angeles Times and on NBC’s TODAY. He has also toured the nation and shared stages in support of artists like Luke Combs, Kane Brown, Brett Eldredge, Luke Bryan, Kip Moore, LANCO, Old Dominion, Hunter Hayes, and more. Frank Ray's EP "Getcha Some" is out now!

Join host Patrick Custer in this inspiring episode as he sits down with the incredible author, speaker, and coach, Ruthie Lindsey. Ruthie shares her journey of discovering that belonging is not about performance or perfectionism, and how childhood messages shaped her perspective. Her story takes a miraculous turn when she survives a near-fatal accident, leading her to a path of numbing pain with medication and escapism. However, a voice inside her drives her to seek something more, uncovering a life-altering revelation. This heartwarming butterfly story will inspire you to embrace your authenticity and realize that we are all hardwired for belonging. Tune in for a transformative conversation with Ruthie Lindsey!
About Ruthie: Ruthie Lindsey is the author of the memoir There I Am, The Journey From Hopelessness To Healing, speaker and a midwife of souls, helping people feel endeared to their own life, body and soul.
Ruthie shares a remarkable story of surviving an accident as a teenager where she had a five percent chance to live and a one percent chance to walk, and the surgery that simultaneously saved and destroyed her body. As a young woman, chronic pain slowly pulled Ruthie away from everything she once held dear: her marriage, her faith, her family, her body, her very self. But her message is one of strength and resilience, the faith she lost and rebuilt in herself, and the power of sharing our stories.
Ruthie helps audiences remember the healing that is inside of all of us. And how to fall in love with every part of ourselves. To see the invitation of pain and to remember all that is so right with us, not what’s wrong with us. She has spoken alongside renowned activists and writers such as Brené Brown, Glennon Doyle and Luvvie Ajayi.

What if you were placed on a platform and told from a young age that your value in this world and the eternal is based on performance: That a rigid, black-and-white system of rules within your spiritual community must be followed because you are an example who could or would cause others to fall from grace if you didn’t meet expectations of spiritual greatness and perfection? We continue celebrating Mental Health Awareness Month by highlighting the stories of brave and relentless survivors of mental health and trauma struggles!
In this episode, we talk to vocal phenom, music industry icon, wife, and mother of 3, Nikki Leonti, about how the intersectionality of her personal life, societal pressures, and stigma took over her career in the Christian music industry.
She shares her inspirational story of being dropped from her record label after becoming pregnant as a teenager, overcoming extreme judgment, abusive relationships, and custody battles. She has shared her talent on Ellen, Jay Leno, and America's Got Talent. She's saved her daughter from SIDS. She's taken her struggles and used them to inspire. Her message will make you feel like you can do anything. We love her and you will too!!

Why are we doing this and am I good enough to be here doing what I’m doing? The answer is yes. Not only are you and I supposed to be here, we are supposed to be the ones experiencing it because our experience is valuable! If we share our story, we are quite likely the one who will change someone’s mind about this particular experience and the possibilities for change that exist! Other people may be terrified to lean into it. When you or I have experienced the struggle and found healing, we become the right person to send the message to others.I am best qualified to help heal the person or people I once was!_____________Resources:National Help LinePhone: 988 (new nationwide short-code)URL: www.988lifeline.org_____________Promises Behavioral Health - Help for addiction, mental health/trauma:Call: (888) 648-4098URL: www.promisesbehavioralhealth.comInsta: @promises_bh_____________

We are launching National Mental Health Awareness Month with reality TV star, makeup guru, and social media influencer, Savannah Chrisley. She self admittedly opens up in this interview more than ever before about her journey confronting her mental health and many of the obstacles she’s overcome. Healing is not a one-stop shop: It is a continuous process that requires us to be active participants. While each person’s story is unique, the thread of hope and healing is one that we can all cling to through the art of storytelling! We encourage you to join this conversation of transformation with an open heart!

Tim Lodgen grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, where he signed a skateboard contract that had him riding with Bucky Lasek and Brandon Novak. Playing sports kept him away from drugs and alcohol until he enlisted in the Marine Corps as a Senior in High School. He thought he'd let off some steam before he had to enter the highly regimented life of a soldier, and during that time, he did every drug he could get his hands on. Soon he was deployed to Somalia, where massive amounts of alcohol took the place of the drugs. When he finally returned home, he was happy to be out of the military but quickly fell into a deep depression that had him sitting with a gun in his lap and thinking about suicide. He finally admitted his depression and was diagnosed with Bi-Polar disorder. Still, without ever admitting to his drug and alcohol use, he spent the next 20 years with incorrect doses that did little for his mental health.
Tim then began a career as an MMA fighter. An eventual injury led him to introduce opiates into his use, which sent his addiction to another level and caused a second suicide attempt. He finally found help 27 years into his addiction after his wife discovered him preparing to take his own life. He has since become the healthiest version of himself, even coming in 3rd place in a Muscle and Fitness bodybuilding contest. Tim now uses his platform to help others by telling his story, working with the homeless, and offering addiction and health advice through his Instagram account.

We are celebrating and recognizing Transgender Day of Visibility with a deep and meaningful conversation with Beck Gee. Beck is a master’s level clinician with an undergraduate degree in Sociology with an emphasis on Gender & Sexuality and a master’s degree in Addiction Counseling. Beck has worked in the mental health and substance use field for over 10 years in various capacities. The main focus of his work has been invested in the LGBTQI+ community, adolescents, and families. Over this decade, Beck has trained numerous facilities on LGBTQI+ best practices, has been a keynote and presenter at many conferences and has facilitated workshops about LGBTQI+, trauma, adolescents, gender and sexuality.
Beck grew up outside of Los Angeles and has lived in many states across the U.S. He got sober July 11, 2005, and believes recovery is the foundation of his success and gave him the ability to live authentically. Beck’s superpower is using his platform to speak out about issues of social justice.
International Transgender Day of Visibility (often referred to as TDOV or Trans Day of Visibility) is an annual event dedicated to celebrating transgender people and raising awareness of discrimination faced by transgender people worldwide, as well as a celebration of their contributions to society. The event began in 2009 as a reaction to the lack of LGBTQ+ recognition of transgender people, citing the frustration that the only well-known transgender-centered day was theTransgender Day of Remembrance, which mourned the murders of transgender people but did not acknowledge and celebrate living members of the transgender community. The first International Transgender Day of Visibility was held on March 31, 2009.

All month long on this show we are highlighting the positive impact some fellow members of the LGBTQ+ and recovery communities are having on the world today through visibility and advocacy.

Actress, musician, author, and recovery advocate, Mackenzie Phillips, shares an extremely vulnerable and heartfelt interview with host, Patrick Custer, about her story of trauma, addiction, fame, fortune, healing, and recovery.
The eldest daughter of John Phillips and stepdaughter of Michelle Phillips, both lead singers of the 1960s band The Mamas and The Papas, Mackenzie Phillips grew up in a wild household, where a typical evening might include rolling joints for her dad or fending off advances by Mick Jagger. Far from idyllic, she describes her parents’ home as “dirty and broken” with “very little going on inside except sex, drugs, and rock and roll.”. But in spite of the turmoil at home, Mackenzie found success onscreen, becoming famous at age fourteen for her role in the iconic film American Graffiti, which landed her a starring role as Julie Cooper on the hit sitcom One Day at a Time alongside America’s sweetheart Valerie Bertinelli. Even though she seemed to have it all, Mackenzie couldn’t escape the dark secrets and constant drug use at home and began to use herself.
This was just the beginning of a life unimaginable to many. Listen to this episode to hear the rest of her story and how she ultimately found the path to a life of hope, healing, and restoration.

Grammy-nominated and Dove award-winning recording artist, Ty Herndon, joins us to share about his life growing up in the south, navigating a career in the music industry in active addiction, the bravery it took to come out of the closet and surviving multiple relapses on his path to long-term recovery! Ty reveals how his forthcoming album, Jacob (releasing spring 2022), tells these stories for the first time through his music!
Ty Herndon is a master of the ties that bind. He has the ability to connect with an audience far beyond his onstage performance. More than 20 years into his career, Herndon shows no signs of slowing down.
Herndon made his chart debut in 1995 with “What Mattered Most,” which became his first No. 1 song and garnered a Song of the Year award (Music Row Magazine). It was also the title track to his debut album, which debuted on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and had the biggest first-week shipment in the history of Epic Records’ Nashville.
Between 1995 and 2002, Herndon charted 17 singles, including his three No.1s and numerous top 10 hits, such as “I Want My Goodbye Back,” “Loved Too Much,” “A Man Holding On,” and “Hands of a Working Man.” He topped the charts in 1996 with the single “Living in a Moment” and again in 1998 with “It Must Be Love.”
In 2014, Ty was the first major male country artist to publicly come out as gay in an exclusive with People magazine. He received an outpouring of support that only strengthened his relationship with fans and the country music community, all while expanding his reach to new and diverse audiences. Shortly after, he made history when he hosted a first-of- its-kind country music event, The Concert for Love and Acceptance. The event, designed to raise awareness and support for LGBTQ youth and families, received national attention from Boston Globe, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Tonight, and many more. Since the launch of the event, Herndon has partnered with GLAAD to produce the event each year and created the Foundation For Love & Acceptance in 2020 to further his work on behalf of LGBTQ acceptance.
Ty found himself back at No. 1 in 2020 — this time on iTunes with his remake of “Orphans of God,” a collaboration with Kristin Chenoweth and Paul Cardall featured on his holiday release, Regifted. He is currently in the studio writing and recording a new album — his first of all new music since 2016’s House On Fire.
