Hello, hello. My name is Hannah and we are back with episode 4 of our Frankenstein read aloud. You all know the drill by now, before we all settle in to our comfies, start up our cars, and gather a crowd we LOVE to share a fun fact with you all. Did you know that Mary Shelley is considered to be the mother of science fiction? At age 18? Frankenstein is unique in that it’s sort of the first novel that falls under the genre we’d now call ‘science fiction.’ Without her, movies like Star Wars and shows like Stranger Things wouldn’t really exist in the same way! Wild! I now invite you to sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.

Hello again! It’s me, Hannah. We are back with episode 3 of Frankenstein or, the Modern Prometheus. As you know, we like to share a fun fact or story before we get into the read aloud and this one isn’t for the faint of heart.
Did you know that Percy Shelley’s heart refused to burn? After his death in a boating accident off the coast of Italy, his body was cremated. But his heart had calcified and remained intact (it’s speculated that this was due to a bout with tuberculosis earlier in his life). Mary Shelley took the calcified heart of her beloved husband, and kept it with her for many years. It was even found in her possession when the died![1] Creepy! Devoted, but still, creepy.
With that being said, let’s get to it. Sit back, relax, and I hope you enjoy.

Hello again! It’s me, Hannah. We are back with episode 2 of Frankenstein or, the Modern Prometheus. As you know, we like to share a fun fact or story before we get into things so here is this week’s.
Most of you have probably heard from someone particularly annoying (or been that annoying person, I won’t judge I’m going to be her right now!) but the monster isn’t named Frankenstein – the scientist is. But did you know that the monster doesn’t actually have a name? He is referred to as wretch, creature, monster, and even just It throughout the book. The lack of respect really does start to make certain things …. Make more sense.
In any case, let’s get right into it! Sit back, relax, and I hope you enjoy.

Hello everyone and welcome to the first episode of the Camrose Public Library’s 2022 read aloud! My name is Hannah, and I cannot wait to spend the next 7 weeks with you all.
Ironically, it was ‘The Year Without a Summer’ which sparked the inception of our summer selection. Mary and Percy Shelley were vacationing in Switzerland with their friends – John William Polidori and Lord Byron – in the abnormally dreary summer of 1816. Trapped inside and ceaselessly bored, Lord Byron proposed that the four of them compete to see who could write the best ghost story. The pressure of the competition left Mary Shelley with horrible writer’s block and a listless slate of ideas she couldn’t do much about. After weeks of deliberation and listening in on philosophical debates between the other members of the house, particularly about the nature of humanity, Mary Shelley was struck with the idea that would ultimately become Frankenstein or, the Modern Prometheus.
Make sure to keep the lights on as we delve into this creepy tale! Sit back, grab a snack, and I hope you enjoy.

Earlier this month we got the chance to speak with the incredible Danny Ramadan. Danny Ramadan is a Syrian-Canadian author and LGBTQ-refugees advocate.
His debut novel, The Clothesline Swing, won multiple awards. His children’s Book Salma the Syrian Chef, continues to receive accolades. Both books were translated to multiple languages.
His short stories and essays appeared in publications across North America and Europe.
Ramadan’s forthcoming novel, The Foghorn Echoes (2022), and his memoir, Crooked Teeth (2024), to be released by Penguin Random House.
Through his fundraising efforts, Ramadan raised over $200,000 for Syrian LGBTQ+ identifying refugees.
Ramadan graduated from UBC with an MFA in Creative Writing, and lives in Vancouver with his husband, Matthew Ramadan.
