In this episode of the Deer Season 365 podcast, we're talking with University of Georgia graduate student Daniel DeRose-Broeckert about his fascinating new deer vision research. What Daniel discovered is that rubs and scrapes actually glow like highway reflectors to a deer's unique eyes. This is fascinating research that will not only open your eyes to a whole new way deer may view their world, but it also reinforces how little we truly know about white-tailed deer, despite them being the most studied game animal on the planet.

Traditional archery seems to be growing in popularity as more and more hunters yearn for stepping back in time and pursuing deer in much the same way our ancestors once did. Like most new pursuits though, getting started can seem daunting, and initial bad experiences can lead to giving up prematurely. On this episode of Deer Season 365, wildlife biologist, author, and lifelong conservationist Ron Rohrbaugh joins NDA’s Nick Pinizzotto to talk about his personal traditional archery journey. He shares stories about his first hunts as a trad hunter and offers some excellent advice for people considering taking the plunge into the world of hunting with longbows and recurves. Also discussed is the amazing camaraderie among trad hunters and how the community is always willing to lend a hand to newcomers. Ron also shares information about where to find his award-winning books and informative and entertaining videos on his YouTube channel.Featured Sponsor/Partners* First Lite * Bass Pro Shops & Cabela's

When you ask most hunters who have successfully gotten close to mature deer what their number one priority is when heading to the woods, they’ll tell you scent control and hunting in the right wind conditions. You could be hunting the best spot in the country with mature bucks everywhere, but if you don’t control your scent, it won’t matter. A whitetail’s nose is its primary line of defense, so if you’re serious about consistently achieving positive results, managing scent control should be your top priority.

To help deliver that point, Jake Ehlinger of Habitat Solutions 360 joins Nick and The Doctor to talk about his extreme scent control routine and how it can be modified to fit your personal hunting situation. Jake is a well-known, successful mature buck hunter who brings a wealth of expertise in many areas, ranging from hunting whitetails to managing their habitat. As we head into hunting seasons across the country, this is the perfect time to hear this conversation.

Many deer hunters and the public at large are unaware of the critical work university affiliated state and regional wildlife health organizations do for the betterment of wildlife and human health. Deer are no exception, and in many cases, they dominate the workload due to their abundance, impact on broad wildlife conservation, and popularity.

In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Lisa Murphy, a veterinarian, professor of toxicology, and the leader of the Pennsylvania Wildlife Futures Program at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Murphy explains the importance of wildlife health programs while detailing some of the specific work she oversees, ranging from the day-to-day rigors of regional wildlife health technicians to CWD sampling at the laboratory, to leading critical research for deer and other wildlife species.

NDA has enjoyed a rich partnership with the Pennsylvania Wildlife Futures Program and others like it around the country, and even long-time members may be unaware of how many unique projects the organization works on that have broad implications for deer, hunting, and habitat. This episode illustrates one of the many ways NDA works with key partners to accomplish important science-based outcomes for deer and other wildlife.

Through the Wildlife Futures Program, the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine (Penn Vet) is conducting a study to explore leading causes of mortality in deer with and without CWD within a CWD-endemic area. The study team outfitted deer with GPS-collars programmed to emit a mortality signal to promptly retrieve carcasses for a complete necropsy with associated ancillary tests to determine the cause of death. Early results are in, and we are joined by Dr. Erick Gagne and Dr. Jennifer Hoy-Petersen of Penn Vet to discuss what the team has found so far.

In this episode of the Deer Season 365 Podcast, Brian talks with Donnie Draeger, a wildlife biologist at the Comanche Ranch in Texas, about an intensive 13-year research project Donnie was involved in focused on whether culling can improve the overall quality and genetics of a free-ranging deer herd. The research, combined with DNA analysis of the deer, provided some very interesting results that should put an end to any notion that you can improve the genetics of a wild, free-ranging deer herd with a trigger pull.
