In this podcast we discuss a human rights initiative involving the exploration of mechanisms for better protection of women in the criminal justice system.

Currently, we know very little about the lives and the conditions of the detention of women who come into conflict with the law and are arrested, detained, incarcerated or institutionalised.  But what we do know paints a picture of human rights violations from health and medical care to safety and lack of legal representation.

The project, in partnership with the South African Human Rights Commission and the Association for the Prevention of Torture, is funded by the European Union.Read Justice Edward Cameron's 2015 report on the Pollsmoor Correctional Service here.

In 2019, the South African and European Union Strategic Partnership, through the Dialogue Facility, funded a dialogue process aimed at improving South Africa’s policy and legislation to better protect and uphold the rights of Intersex and Transgender people. It involved an in-depth exchange between various government stakeholders, civil society organisations, technical experts as well as partners from countries such as Malta.

This podcast focuses on specific policy improvements that can enable the better protection of the human rights of the transgender and intersex community in South Africa.

In this three-part series, we speak to a number of the key role players involved to unpack the human rights issues at stake, the lived realities of transgender and intersex people, the multifaceted and highly complex layers in changing current policy and legislation and the way forward.

In this first episode, we shine spotlight on the Civil Society representatives advocating for equal rights for transgender and intersex people.

In this podcast we discuss the national and global biodiversity targets and a dialogue project which resulted in 44 district municipalities in SA engaging with their European counterparts on the role and contributions of local governments in achieving these targets.  This exchange coincides with the process of developing the Post 2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, which will set the global agenda for biodiversity and related climate action to 2030.

We speak to custodians of South Africa's Biodiversity efforts from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment; ICLEI - local governments for sustainability; and European counterparts working towards achieving the global biodiversity targets in Europe.
