Trigger Warning: Mental illness and suicidal ideation mentioned and discussed
Shame is a dangerous emotion that can hold us back and convince us that we are unworthy of being loved and of belonging. And left unaddressed, shame can drive us into mental illness, abandoning ourselves, those we love and our dreams. It can lead to addiction and so much more.
In this yarn I wanted to share some insights as to my own experiences of 'shame' and the damage it has caused to my journey and what I am doing to move through shame. I share my own journey, a definition of shame and also how 'shame' has been used as a social conditioning tool of colonisation and patriarchal practices to break down and entrap Indigenous peoples and women amongst other groups.
I share some insights how 'shame' has been used to hold women and Indigenous mob back, and why I'm choosing to stand up and share my own experiences of shame and what I'm doing to move through it, heal from it and learn from it.
Some key themes from this episode.
Defining Shame
The Impact of Shame

Warrior Heart yarns with Aunty Shan is back. It is has been a long while since I have had the capacity and resources to record and share my experiences in this medium and online. I retreated into survival and autopilot and toxic coping strategies because of some events that happened and the compounding overlay of grief, shame, guilt and avoidance I have been living in and with.
Slowly the last few days I have felt things beginning to shift internally, my Dreaming whispering to me. My heart whispering me to wake up. That my kids needed me, I could no longer go on like this and this season is literally a life and death battle for my physically, spiritually, mentally, emotionally and for my Dreaming. It is no longer enough to survive. What served me in previous seasons is now keeping stuck.
I share in a raw, real and vulnerable passage of my experiences, how ending relationships, being willing to let go of and lose people, relationships and dreams to be able to come home to myself, and find me again. What this season has cost me so far and what I am fighting for.
A powerful message that was set to me that cracked me open, woke me up and activated me into this moment. By someone that was impacted by a podcast episode I did on the Rich Blak Woman podcast sharing my story and experiences, speaking my truth. This episode was recorded in 2023, and yet it landed for this person over 1 year later. And they shared with me how hearing my truth, story and example has planted a seed for their own journey and transformation. And it was a deep reminder and remembering and validation that being myself, wholly as I am. Nothing less and nothing more is enough.
This message was the whip, the hammer crack open the armour and shell I had wrapped around myself. It woke me up and called to me.
I hope this yarn empowers you to find the courage to start again as many times as you need to find your path and clarity. I have shared the episode below that empowered and inspired this person to step into and up to her life and calling.

I am so tired of seeing the impacts of the below on individuals and how we are conditioned to believe they are 'internal problems' for us to solve. Rather than tools, conditions and systems of patriarchy and colonisation.
Here is to how I see them killing the power, potential and purpose in people and why we need to do something about it as individuals and as a collective. To set free the next generation from these chains, not of our own making.
Because there are many who profit from our playing small and staying small. Lets break through, take back our power, step in your purpose and potential.
It is a season for truth-telling, meeting myself more deeply and allowing my life, Ancestors and Dreaming to speak to me without filters or hiding.
I have been doing this in varying degrees for a while now, and it is a practice that I keep coming back to. Because it is not habit yet. And its being kinder to myself and putting the 'feelings' on a leash so I can get a handle on things in this season and clear some space.
I hope this lands for you, I hope it connects. And if it does please reach out and let me know. It serves me and feels aligned to share my yarns and experiences in this way in a way that honours my season and not some marketing timeline or ego-centric goal to get more followers. For now I know this will find those who need it or may benefit from it.
Big love for your time and ears. If this lands with you please reach out and let me know.
Have you EVER attended an event that just seems to be the catalyst for your next level? Or you just KNOW it's planted something in you that could change the trajectory of your lofe forever?
I have and did. This week in fact. I attended Arlan Hamilton, My First Million Live event 2024 in LA. And here are my reflections from sitting in space with people wanting to make their first or next Million. And the opportunity to here from people have done their first million and they are lifting the curtain on what it takes.
And who you need to become.
As I begin to walk the steps of putting the Warrior Heart into practice and being about it.
I realise how many foundations need to shift, how it is an evolving concept and practice.
Sharing my living experiences of this new path and way of being in the world.
Recently I had some dear friends call me in about the role I am playing and my responsibilities.
And really asking me to be honest with myself and my current season about what my priorities are and how do I meet into the season I'm in from capacity and capability.
An honest yarn and loving message to myself to keep me on track.
I recently listened to Patrice Washington 'redefining wealth' podcast. And she posed this powerful question, 'what are you willing to lose'?
And it sat with me as I have been practising Dadirri (deep listening) to myself, my spirit, my life, my core relationships, my old people and my Dreaming.
Here I yarn about what I'm willing to lose or let go of in this season to become the person I am capable, called and desiring to be and become.
What is the power of Dreaming and purpose? And sharing why it's a non-negotiable in my life and season moving forward.
What is your definition of Confidence and moving with Confidence.
I'm going to try being honest with myself, my truth and my experiences. And I share what this journey means in the time and now.
What needs to be stronger for you to win and what does winning look like in this season for you???
Warrior Heart yarn around why no matter how deep the drive, aspirations and commitment are. If the wounds have not been healed, we will fall to patterns of what our nervous system recognises as safety and familiar.
Even if that safety is not really safe. If it's familiar, we will stay there. Until we have the courage to sit with our wounds and begin to heal them.
How do we really know if we are healing and shifting?
I share a yarn about a post called 7 backward ass signs you are being by Instagram account - LaurenLove. And it hit me in the heart, and spirit
Here is how I KNOW I am helping, levelling up and shifting in this season.
Entering into season 3, 2024 and sharing who I am and where I am starting from. This is me. Welcome to my journey.
My word for 2023 was Transformation. 2023 definitely did not end for me the way it started.
And some of the lessons I've learnt.
Sharing what's real my world in this moment as I continue to make space for my journey, my reflections and truth.
Vulnerable account for me to process and allow into the world 🌎 the reality of what I'm experiencing, Bein my Warrior Heart.
My role as Ngamaka (mum) has been a part of my Dreaming since as long as I can remember.
And all I ever wanted to be was Ngamaka, and one of my promises I made to myself and my future children. Was that I would do my best to heal myself and show up. So my children didn't become victims to my dysfunction or trauma.
It doesn't always play out the way we intend. Yarning a little about journey in this time and place.
Yarning and sharing the complexities of stepping into my power and the shifting impact it is having on my journey, relationships and connection.
And that the characte I play in other people's story is none of business. But it's really hard as well the impact of me stepping into my power can have on others.
Sharing a vulnerable real yarn and experience.
As I walk this journey and allow it to unfold. I'm doing the work and showing up.
And yet I'm feeling the pull between the old and the new.
My experience in this season and question is, can I allow the old and the emerging to coexist together?
Have you ever had a feeling that something needed to shift or change? And you ignored it?
Has a lesson kept repeating itself in your life? Mine has and the consequences this time round are to deep and real to ignore.
My personal journal and reflections on the Referendum and experiences. And what I am choosing to do next.
I'm coming for everything my Old People where denied and I'm not playing from survival mode anymore.
I am walking in my full power, self determination and sovereignty.
Are you coming with me?
TW... Mental Illness, Suicidal Ideation spoken about.
The world speaks about being your authentic self, only bring your authentic self to the room. What I don't see is the talk of what it can cost us to be our authentic self and the role grief can play in this.
I share a very raw yarn about the role grief is playing in my journey.
I yarn about the power of Hope when creating change. And the process of allowing different emotions and experiences to coexist together.
As I walk the next steps of unfolding into a new book and letting go of what no longer serves or honours this next season.
Hope is the emotion keeping me afloat.
The lessons, guidance and wisdom we need is all around us.
Today I saw a post titled Indigenous Wisdom. And it asked a question, 'How does a seed become a tree?'.
It must first let go of being a seed. I yarn about how this has landed for me as wisdom and guidance.
Sometimes we go for something and have a defined outcome or definition of success. However, sometimes or maybe a lot of the time we don't get the outcome we wanted or prepared for. But in showing up we get the lessons we needed?
Join me as I reflect on my journey to the 2023 World Championships and the insights that came from showing up and following my Dreaming.
In this episode I am yarning with yourself and my spirit about what does it mean to come with purpose?
What if purpose is about becoming more of yourself and moving away from the things that take you away from yourself?
As I sit in this new space of being and becoming. Of old chapters closing and new ones beginning.
What does it mean to have a title of leader, or mum or whatever title you hold? Vs 'being' the person or what that role means.
And taking responsibility to serve and power, rather than power over and doing harm.
Is the calling of your past stronger than your future?
For me I've always operated at about 60/40% ratio. 60% of the time my past, trauma, old selves, old ways of being and doing was stronger than the call of my future. However, the other 40% of the time I was grounded in my Dreaming, being and doing was from the call of my future not my past.
In this season I can see a tipping point 60% of the time I'm in my Higher Self and being and doing from my Dreaming. The ripple effect of past steps created a gentle momentum that got me here and seeds planted are starting to take root.
Sharing my reflections, experiences and defining moments of NAIDOC 2023. And the seeds it planted and the ripples created for the year to come, the work to be done and impact to be experienced.
On beautiful Kabi Kabi Country and doing some growth and expansion of self and skills. The training is the work and wisdom of Aunty Judy Atkinson, delivered through We Al-Li Foundation and facilitated by the glorious and deep Tracy Hardy from Wattleseed Nutrition.
And we are yarning about Trauma and creating trauma informed workforce. However, we need to apply and live the learning's before we can apply them to others.
And something have been happening back home, in community of people actively seeking and harm my work, me and my organisation. If successful their actions would affect our ability to serve our young people. Now I can focus on that or I can focus on who I am here to be, those who I serve and my Ancestral Dreaming.
I choose to focus on my path, not others words or actions.
I hear a LOT about the need for safety spaces. In this yarn I share why we need brave spaces over safety.
Please be aware it may be a little off beat, as I was also nursing my x2 year old who needed me in the moment I was recording.
I still decided to record anyway. There is some value in this yarn.
Trigger Warning; Suicidal Ideation and Mental Illness spoken about
When I realised that wishing things to be different than they are, and not accepting them for the reality and facts, is slowly killing me.
In this yarn I go into how wanting things to be one way and trying to force things, and avoiding the facts of things and relationships as they are. Is a driving cause of my current mental health spiral and experience of Suicidal ideation.
How I can choosing 'truth & facts' over what I 'wish' was true. Is keeping me on the path to coming home to myself.
What happens when you are lost? Questioning your own path and cant see a path forward through all of the overwhelm.
You ask the Ancestors and the Universe. And then what to do when they answer.
Today I decided to go for a walk/job to get some movement in my body because I was feeling stressed and because I haven't been able to get much training in.
I set an intention for the day "to do things differently' and to allow myself to take the next step. My intention for the walk/jog was 3km at a comfortable pace.
I surprised myself and this energy carried into my day and more things came up that really did surprise me.
I certainly had this image that self-care was about bubble baths and massages. And that it was a nice to have. I soon learned how wrong I was and that real, deep self care is about showing up and taking responsibility for your own journey.
Come and have a yarn with me as I take you a little further into my journey.
Often times we can be faced with a situation or or asked to do something by someone, a calling, a situation or a your own inner voice. And we don't believe we are capable of doing that thing, we are not worthy or its not meant for us.
I recently found myself in a situation where I was up against a tough opponent, maybe my biggest opponent of all time. My own fears, doubt and lack of self belief that I am capable and worthy of what I am being called to do and what I dream of doing.
It is my screaming child in the crowd that allowed me to overcome my doubt, my fear, my tiredness and 'reality' to win a gold medal and plant the seed of belief and trust in myself and my Ancestral Calling.
TRIGGER WARNING - Mental Health, Sexual Abuse, Suicide are mentioned in this episode.
This is one of my most rawest, real and vulnerable episodes yet, if ever. Warning I go into my childhood sexual abuse and mental health challenges.
I travelled half way around the world to be reconnected a part of my soul that had gone quite. And to emerge into the next layer of myself. I am not the same woman coming home.
I have travelled to Puerto Rico on a leap of faith and trust in myself, this trip was that activation I needed to awaken a piece of my soul that had gone to sleep, and I need her to become the woman who can birth this new vision into the new world I am reimagining.
As the saying goes, use your energy to focus on the new, not the old. And it is has been more transformational than I could have EVER believed.
I said goodbye to this version of myself, to set me free to become who has been calling me for so long. It is part becoming and part remembering.
Trigger Warning - Mental Health, Suicide, Aboriginal deaths and names mentioned of First Nations people passed on.
Warrior Heart Yarns is about sharing yarns with people who are standing in their power, being their truth and following their hearts. Its about people have are using their life experiences to have an impact in the world by being the change they want to see.
We get to yarn with the deadly Sam Alderton-Johnson who is a proud First Nations man, father, founder of Impact Policy and Jiu Jitsu athlete. Sam
We weave together yarns about our lived experience, our leadership journeys and our purpose and drive behind why we do what we do. We yarn about young First Nations Warrior Cassius Turvey who was murdered in 2022, walking home from school, the dangers and challenges or racism, being First Nations entrepreneurs or as we like to be called Indigiprenuers, breaking generational cycles of trauma and poverty, while remembering and reconnecting ourselves and our babies to generational cycles of First Nations knowing, being, doing and culture.
This is a deep and courageous yarn.
26th January is a difficult and challenging time of year for many First Nations mob in Australia. It is the day the process and impact of Colonisation began in what is now known as Australia. In 1938 Aboriginal Elders declared this a National Day of Mourning.
This date is is known by many and supported as #nothedatetocelebrate it is referred to by many different names, I use 'Survival Day'. In this yarn I share my perspectives about showing up and doing what is within my capacity and is in alignment for me right now.
Sending big love and support to ALL our mob who show up in their own way for this day and every other day to advance our peoples and cultures and communities. And love to our Allies who are also standing in the arena with us.
I hear in a lot of different spaces, just be fearless. A lot of 'motivation' talks or videos is often around 'just be fearless' or celebrating being a 'fearless leader'.
For me I say 'F&#K, being fearless. I am instead learning to make friends with my fear, to make space for her. Which is really allowing me to meet each moment for what it is, and respond rather than being reactive.
And how I am working with my Tidda, friend and Mentor Jess to show up differently in 2023. Allowing me knowing that I am hear to do be and do things differently as an anchor to make friends with my fear and show up as I am.
And in this yarn I take you on my journey through my current process and experience.
Big love you mob
In my reflections of and for 2022. The Ancestors guided me to a post from Aunty Karen Demmery. Whose words are ALWAYS a loving slap of goodness, wisdom and guidance.
And this one was DEEP. An invitation to do end of year reflection different. To sit with and take responsibility for who you have been and the choices you made in 2022.
Here is my yarn to myself in this process of taking responsibility.... Here is gratitude to 2022 for all of it.
As a woman who comes from a Collective culture, is a mum and has always been or held a nurturing role of others. The idea of putting myself at the centre of my own purpose. Scares the hell out of me on many levels and for many reasons. It's not the done or accepted thing.
And yet this is where I am feeling CALLED to go by my Ancestors and the Universe. In this yarn I explore and share my current being on this new calling to be my own purpose and all the feels of the current state.
Come share the journey with me.
I took some time of from the podcast to be in the world and process what was happening and what it meant for me. What I was making it mean and how it impacted how I was showing up in the world. And the ripple effect this was happening through me.
I get vulnerable, raw and share what has been happening in my world and how I have been learning to make space for my feelings, and not give them the drivers seat. Or even the passenger seat. From feelings of grief, sadness and shame.
And where this journey is taking me.
Today, I opened my social media and saw the devasting stories being shared on ABC's Four Corners. Titled, 'How many more' sharing that since 2000 at least 315 First Nations women have either gone missing, been murdered or killed in suspicious circumstances since 2000. And then the story of Cassius Turvey a 15 year old First Nations boy, murdered in broad daylight by a white racist. A grown man who beat and killed Cassius for being black. All names have been given permission by their families to use because their families want their stories shared.
Today my heartbreaks and my spirit is heavy.
TRIGGER WARNING - Mental health and suicide mentioned.
When we are asked to dream and give our self courage to dream big and be audacious, it can feel scary and overwhelming. Especially if you are in a space or situation were hope and dreaming feels like a luxury.
I want to yarn with you about an idea, what if our dream was the gateway to possibility and our own potential. It was the universes and our Ancestors/Guides way of leading us to our next chapter, and that they showed us the beginning. So that we did not become overwhelmed or afraid of the vastness of possibility and potential? Or we did not limit ourselves based on who we think we are and what we are capable off?
Because sometimes in order for a dream to become possible we first need to become possible and believe in ourselves and our own potential to be the person who can bring that dream/vision into the world?
Today's yarn is all about the slap I got from the Ancestors and the Universe. It's not my circumstances that are the problem or the solution.
It's me, and how I am showing up or not showing up. Who I believe I am or not that is the determining factor in my experience.
Ngayi you mob,
When I share the practice and principles of the Warrior Heart - stand in your power, be your truth and follow your heart. It does not mean I have the practise down pat or am fully fluent in the steps and actions attached to this philosophy and way of being, knowing and doing.
This week I met the strand of Truth, and it is damn hard to be your truth and to be accountable for what that means in how you are showing up and the impact it can have on others. In this episode I yarn about a few experiences where I was invited and challenged to practise being in my truth and being accountable for what that means.
Do you have sayings, philosophies, mantra or affirmations that you use in your life?
How does 'It is what it is, As it is' sound? When I first heard this, it went a little over my head. And it also planted a seed in my heart that would take root over many years. Now it is a philosophy that is empowering me to be, lead and serve from the heart. Whilst showing up and meeting each moment for what it is, as it is.
In this episode I yarn about how this practice is allowing me to set intentions and goals for how I want to show up in my week and what I want to get done.
