Behind the story: There actually is a story behind this one! I recorded this in New York last year, right before I turned 39. We were in a professional radio studio, using gorgeous microphones, and of course, I had the inputs up way to high, so it sounds crunchy. Then one of the storytellers, I’M NOT SAYING WHO, asked me not to publish this. Something about being embarrassed. So I didn’t. For like, a whole year.
But then I ran out of stories. So you know, you tell it, eventually we’re gonna share it.

So, as you may have guessed, this is NOT a Tell It Anyway. It’s a brand-new podcast called “Hooray for Garbagetown”, and it sprung to life in the (sometimes sweltering) creative heat generated in the little office above the butcher shop where your favorite storytelling podcast is produced.
You may remember Jackie Vleck from TIA Ep. 9 “What Might Have Been”. If you don’t, go check out that episode, b/c it is terrific. Matt and I have known Jackie since she was part of the epic “Bad Teacher” experience, but we were floored with how great she was telling stories on our show. So we got to talking about a particular phrase that Jackie loves to use: “garbage.”
As in, “I’m a garbage.” Or, “this town makes you feel like garbage.” And we thought, well, if that isn’t a podcast….
So Jackie and her Ultraloom creative partner Sarah Jean Kruchowsi got together and brought Hooray for Garbagetown to life. They learned the entire “Tom Merritt podcast publishing process”, booked tremendous guests, and showed up every week to the little office above the butcher shop to tape new episodes.
And it was hot.
(Not just the podcast. We had to turn the air off to record, and it was damned hot).
(Note to self: Do not incubate podcasts in August.)
Anyway, I decided to cross post their introductory episode in the Tell It Anyway feed, so you can all get a taste of the garbage (err, magic) but their first full episode is up right now at Hooray for Garbagetown – it’s a tremendous interview with Jim McDermott, a screen and magazine writer, who is also a Catholic priest in a religious order known as the Jesuits.
You should head on over there and take a listen. And then check out their awesome site. You can tell a lot of hard work went into it, which is great, because in Hollywood, hard work is ALWAYS rewarded.

Behind the story: Oh my. I loved all three stories on this one, but technically this episode was technically tough! Skype shows often have something or another wrong with them, usually related to “ducking” or the guest audio. I use Skype Call Recorder to tape those shows. If you, um, “ear-ball” levels ahead of time, the guest audio usually sounds fine enough.
This time though I thought I would be smart and tape my microphone audio on a separate app, so that I could take advantage of my great Heil PR-40. Except I didn’t check the levels of my mic in Audio Hijack where I was recording. And so, as you can probably tell, my mic is horribly overmodulated. I would have used my record from Call Recorder but it had some fatal reoccurring crackle.
So, two lessons here: 1) Get an engineer. Stat. 2) So far, not a single person has written to complain about it. Which means, in the end, the story is the only thing that matters. : )

Production Notes: Well, this week’s podcast featured amazing people, amazing stories, and less than perfect audio. For some reason, the audio on my mic split down the middle of both Jackie and Fred’s channel and made it sound (to my hyper-critical ears) a bit crap-tastic. And I recorded my final thoughts late Wednesday night on a mic at home, which was horribly over modulated, and I didn’t have the strength to re-do. Although I might go in the office today and fix that, b/c UGH.
Also it was at least 90 degrees on the evening that we recorded this, and since we couldn’t run the A/C, I opened the window, which resulted in a more obvious room hum (coming from the machines on the roof). It’s not a deal breaker, but I wanted you to know that I noticed it!
Ah well, you make every error at least twice, right? : )

Production Notes:
This was the first episode where I didn’t have to use a noise filter to remove the mysterious rattle! It’s not so mysterious, it’s an exhaust fan and apparently it has an off switch. So this time I was able to notice the subtler acoustic issues with the room — a constant vibration coming from some other equipment on the roof. So I did a gentler noise filter on that and it seemed to work.
Then there was the issue of Matt Flanagan’s laugh. It is a decibel busting wonder, and someday I am going to get the waveform on his laugh tattooed on my person. But since I didn’t want it to

So about those songs!
I love the first song because it perfectly encapsulates the two sides of a sixteen year old boy’s soul: earnest unfiltered feelings of love for one special person, and the hilarious primal scream of defeat after that declaration love is met with silence.
I love the second song, “Death Van” because it finally got me to breakdown and laugh at something I’d been holding inside for far too long, even if I wish the song had been called “Stupid Fucking Biker” But that’s improv!
And of course I completely adore the long ago voices from my own camp.

You never know what to expect when Cricket and Robert start telling stories. Cricket’s story about Florida ranks among the top animal stories I’ve ever heard, and I learned so much about the formative years of Robert Scheid while enjoying a very funny stories about the animal in the kitchen. And I tell the story of the time my husband dropped his trousers in the parking lot of a McDonalds and how it led to this podcast.
Production note: Some aspects of the audio are improving I think. Some are yet to improve. Some got worse. I asked my radio dad what to do and he said, “hire an audio engineer.”

So this is our second Tell it Anyway experiment. I was SO happy with the storytelling in this one.
I am still perfecting the audio quality. Last week we had three people all in the same room. This week we had three people on Skype, but my in-room record was too low, so I had to boost it and if you have high quality gear, you might hear my “room for improvement”.
You know, it’s almost as if I spent all my life as a producer, and let someone else worry about audio.
So humble apologies for that, but you know what? The stories are worth it, so we’re going to tell them anyway.

Behind the story: We’ve been talking about a storytelling podcast for a long time, but this one came together in 24 hours. Matt, Igor and I went to my office in Los Angeles, and had a little chat about how the 3fer format would work. Take a little Aristotle, add a pinch of Del Close, and give permission for people to ask questions and tell their own stories off of yours. Sample quote from Matt: “I’m skeptical.”
We managed to convince Matt to give it a shot and just as we began to record, the very important machine on the roof of our building began to rattle. But we took our own advice when it comes to stories and decided to tell it anyway.
This is definitely a beta / pilot / preview, but I’m super happy with the storytelling and the music. I’m less happy with the audio quality, but then again I was raised in a house with its own radio studio, so I guess I’ll just have to up my game next week.
