Lyndsey Houser is a sleep technologist working at the WellSpan Sleep Center in Lebanon, PA. She has been working in sleep for 10 years. For three of those years, she was involved in a longitudinal sleep research project at Penn State College of Medicine which looked at cardio metabolic and neuro-cognitive changes from childhood to young adulthood in correlation with sleep disordered breathing. She was also involved in a Parkinson study which was very rewarding. She is hopeful to bring some of her research background to the WellSpan Clinical setting in the future. Her primary role at WellSpan as a day time sleep tech is to help patients get used to CPAP pressure and different CPAP masks, set up at home sleep studies (we have one of the largest programs), collect data from the HSATs and in lab studies, perform nap studies to assess for narcolepsy, and to work with providers to assess the best treatment options for patients.
Brenna Burkhart is a Licensed Practical Nurse and a Registered Sleep Tech. Having sleep apnea herself, she became interested in sleep after having a sleep study right after high school. She finally got involved with sleep when she transitioned from long term nursing to Sleep five years ago.
A typical sleep tech's main role is to test for multiple sleep disorders. While the majority of this testing occurs as a night shift sleep tech, the main focus as daytime sleep techs, is the treatment aspect of sleep disorders. Time is spent processing sleep data from the patients that spend the night in the sleep lab, and data from the patients that do home sleep testing. We work closely with the WellSpan Pulmonary and Sleep practices, notifying them of patients sleep study results followed by assisting with arranging orders and follow ups so patients can receive the most appropriate treatment. We get to follow patient's sleep journey from start to finish. It is definitely an interesting career.
