Talking Truth: Bringing Jesus To A Changing Culture: Recent Episodes

Allyson Tanksley

A survey was done in 2019 with more than 2,200 Gen Z Americans (those born between 1997 - 2012) and found that 45% rarely or never attend church while just 1 in 4 report attending weekly or more. Only 4% of Gen Z believes in a biblical worldview, while atheism is on the rise with this generation. Those are not encouraging statistics. That’s why Talking Truth, a Christian apologetics podcast is here, to bring Jesus to a changing culture. This podcast is gearing towards teens in todays world. In today’s episode, we look at the last remaining point in Allen Webster’s tract on how we can know that the Bible is true! Not only do all 4 of these reasons provide sufficient evidence to believe in the Bible, but all 4 make it impossible! We can be confident that the Bible really is God’s inspired word, and that it is true for all of us today.

This episode is the second of a four part mini series of reasons that we can trust the Bible and note its accuracy. We know that the Bible is true and will be relevant forever because God has said so throughout all of time. Today we have seen that the earliest copies ever found of the Bible are the same as the modern copies we have today. Thanks for listening in!

In this episode, we look at a track written by Allen Webster that is titled “Was Joan of Arc Really Noah’s Wife?” It talks about how there are many people who are misunderstood on what the Bible teaches, and we go over 5 of the reasons why. Why are there so many divisions and misunderstanding on what the Bible teaches? Some believe the Bible is impossible to understand. Some simply do not want to invest in reading and studying it. Some do not know how to rightly divide it. Others maybe do not make time to study it in their daily lives. We’ll look at all of these ideas and more, in this episode of Talking Truth. Just as we in America celebrated Memorial Day yesterday to honor and remember those who have passed away during their service to our Country, Christians have a special time every first day of the week (Sunday) that they remember Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross and all the things He went through for us. Just as the brave soldiers who have died did, Jesus died for us so that we can have a chance at something better. A chance to obey the gospel and spend the rest of eternity in Heaven with Him. What a great sacrifice! Do you honor and remember Jesus’ sacrifice on the first day of the week? The Lord’s day (Sunday), is our Christian Memorial Day. Hello there, and welcome to Talking Truth! Today’s episode is a part of my 2024 podcast series, Buried Treasure! In this episode, we look at the story of Lazarus’ resurrection, as well as the next chapter where he is wanted dead by the chief priests. I think many know the story of Lazarus, but how many know that he was wanted dead? He was wanted dead because He was living proof of the great power of Jesus, and many were coming to know Jesus and believe in Him because of Lazarus’ resurrection! As I mentioned in this podcast, check out this podcast episode I did last year about Lazarus’ resurrection and the timing of God! Welcome to Talking Truth! In this episode, we look at Roald Dahl, an author whose children’s books were revised because people saw them as having offensive or sensitive wording and language. We also look at Thomas Jefferson and how he created his own Bible by cutting out pages and leaving out any mention of miracles, Jesus’ divinity, or the resurrection. All this goes to show that sometimes people like to add or remove words from things they do not like. Do people today do that to the Bible? Do we? Listen to this episode of Talking Truth as we look at what the Bible says about this. A major question asked in the Church is whether or not the Bible gives us the authorization to use instrumental music in worship towards God. Because of this, the proposition for Lads To Leader’s 2024 debate was “The use of instrumental music in the worship of God by His Church is not authorized by His word.” With the permission of my debate partner and the other team, they allowed me to record the first half of our debate. In this portion of our debate, my partner and I are on the affirmative side, which means we believe that the Bible does not authorize instrumental music in worship. Later on that day however, we had to switch sides and argue that the Bible does allow instrumental music in worship. Because of this, we had to argue for one side in which we believe, and one side that we did not believe at all. We had to look at both sides of the argument and learn how to argue for them both. So the opposition in this debate do not believe musical instruments are authorized for worship, but in this debate it was their turn to be on the negative side and argue against the proposition. The first affirmative constructive was done by my partner, Madeline. Then there was the first negative constructive, second affirmative speech (mine!), and then a second negative speech. Then we were given 5 minutes to put together our rebuttals and 3 minutes to present them and defend our case. The rebuttals begin around the 19 minute 38 seconds mark. Thank you for listening to this portion of our debate, and I hope you can see how important it is to study both sides of an issue. When you do, you can see where other people are getting their own answers from and you can see how to defend your own, but it also makes you more confident in what you believe and in what the Bible teaches. 1 Peter 3:15 --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/allyson-tanksley/message

This podcast episode is my submission for Lads To Leader’s Mass Communications. It will be sent in to be reviewed side by side with other 10th grade submissions. Then at the lads to leader convention, the top 3 in each grade will be recognized. I hope you enjoy this episode, as it’s not Buried Treasure, but we will continue that next week! Here is my description of the episode! If you follow Jesus in 2024, then you are countercultural. Today we live in a world that has disassociated from Jesus and the scriptures. We live in a culture where christians are maybe seen as “old fashioned” or “peculiar” for following Jesus. But Jesus has called us to a higher standard, one that we have been given by our Lord to avoid the sinful downfall all around us. We are not called to be a part of the majority of people, but to be a part of God’s people. We are called to be followers of Christ, even if that makes us go against the majority. The world preaches for us to live for ourselves, but Jesus tells us to follow Him. The world tells us that we have no master, but the Bible teaches us to follow Jesus so that we may have eternal life. Finally, the world deceives us and tells us that sin is accepted as the new normal, while Jesus teaches that sin is death and should never be excused. Jesus and His teachings have always been relevant, and they always will be. Booker T. Washington famously said, “A lie doesn’t become truth, wrong doesn’t become right and evil doesn’t become good just because it's accepted by a majority. Following God may be countercultural for us today, but following man or ourselves will not lead to an eternal salvation we want. 2024 total podcast episode plays: 37 2024 minutes of content: 31 minutes & 18 seconds--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/allyson-tanksley/message

Today I talk about something that I saw last week that has to do with the rising popularity of modern romance books that contain pornographic or explicit material. I talk about how these books can cause us to be a stumbling block to ourselves or a stumbling block to others. I also talk about how these types of books do the opposite of honoring God, they dishonor Him and distort what His intentions were from the beginning of time. I actually had to redo this episode a second time because the first time I made it it would not let me upload it at all and that’s never happened before. 2 weeks ago, I got to go to a Church camp in Knoxville Tennessee. At Leadership camp, we learned about various topics such as transgenderism, worldliness, new ageism, and many other topics of discussion that are quite popular all over the world today. Throughout the week, we also had to write a 8-10 minute speech while taking these leadership classes. We worked on how to give speeches, how to write speeches, how to speak confidently in front of people, how to song lead, or say prayers. The boys learned how to do these things by participating in the next Sunday’s worship service, and the girls at the camp (including myself), got to either say a speech during a ladies Bible class, or teach a K-5 Bible class. This is my speech that I worked on throughout the week, and I got the opportunity to be one of the 4 girls that presented speeches during the ladies Bible class. I hope you enjoyed this lesson, and if you ever need a camp recommendation near Knoxville, I would totally recommend Southeast Leadership Camp, which is put on by The Southeast Institute of Biblical Studies and the Karns Church of Christ.

This past week, I got to participate in a debate at lads to leaders. The proposition ( or topic) of this debate was “scripture teaches that life is sacred and begins at conception”. During the debate, I had to argue for both sides of the argument. In the first half of the debate I was for the proposition and in the next half of the debate, I was against it. In the debate, the first two speeches are each around 5 minutes long and these are called constructive speeches. In this time we gave our proofs and evidences for our case. Then we were given a 5 minute break to write a rebuttal against the other person’s speech. In the rebuttal we had 3 minutes to defend our own side against what the other person had said. I really enjoyed doing this and I hope to do more debates at lads in the future! My affirmative speech: 0:00 Opponent’s negative speech: 4:44 5 minute break for rebuttal preparation Opponent’s rebuttal: 9:47 My rebuttal: 11:12 NEXT DEBATE (I switched positions here) Opponent’s affirmative speech: 13:43 My negative speech: 18:45 5 minute break for rebuttal preparation My rebuttal: 22:23 Opponents rebuttal: 24:57

Do you believe that the Bible has no outside sources proving it true? Or do you want to know of some outside sources in order to share with others? The External test, the second test we are putting the Bible through is to see if it is historically accurate. A common question from the atheist to prove the Christian wrong is this: “If there is a God, why is there evil in the world? What have you done to save the world today? Now by this I'm not assuming you have superhuman strength, or that you can shoot rays of light from your eyes. I’m talking about the things and opportunities we have every day to help, or ‘save’ somebody. When was the last time you held a door open for someone, or helped take care of something that wasn't your responsibility? In the Bible, there are numerous examples and verses of people helping each other, encouraging one another, and I guess you could say saving one another. Jesus also points out that it’s a good thing to help those in need. Like the good Samaritan, we should want to help others in their times of trouble, like we would want them to do for us. So, what have you done to save the world today?
