Are you wondering what a D&I audit is and why it’s crucial for your organization’s success? In this episode, I’m diving deep into the transformative power of Diversity & Inclusion audits, showing you how they can be a game-changer in creating a truly inclusive workplace culture. D&I audits are like a health check for your organization, they help you assess where you are, identify what’s working and what’s not, and develop a roadmap for impactful, sustainable change.

We’ll explore a step-by-step process to guide you through conducting a comprehensive audit:

  1. Assess the Current State: This involves gathering qualitative and quantitative data on your organization’s demographics, policies, employee experiences, and perceptions. It’s about understanding the existing culture and identifying any barriers to inclusion.

  2. Identify Gaps and Opportunities: Analyze the data to pinpoint areas where your organization is excelling and where there are gaps. This could be related to recruitment, retention, development opportunities, or how inclusive your day-to-day practices really are.

  3. Develop an Action Plan: Based on your findings, create a targeted action plan that addresses the gaps and leverages the opportunities. This plan should be realistic, measurable, and aligned with your overall business strategy.

  4. Implement & Measure Impact: Roll out your action plan with clear timelines, roles, and responsibilities. Regularly measure progress and impact to ensure you’re on track and making a difference.

Why is this so important? Because without a clear understanding of your organization’s D&I landscape, it’s easy to make assumptions or jump to solutions that don’t address the root causes of exclusion or inequity. Conducting an audit not only helps to uncover these hidden barriers but also creates a baseline from which you can measure future progress.

Let’s talk numbers: Research shows that organizations with robust D&I strategies are 36% more likely to outperform their competitors. Moreover, a study by McKinsey found that companies in the top quartile for gender diversity on executive teams were 25% more likely to have above-average profitability. Despite these compelling statistics, only 38% of companies have a D&I strategy in place, and even fewer conduct regular audits to assess their effectiveness. This gap presents a massive opportunity for forward-thinking leaders to differentiate themselves and create truly inclusive environments where everyone can thrive.

And here’s the exciting part! Throughout October, I’m offering a FREE D&I Audit for my podcast listeners. This is your chance to gain expert insights into your current D&I efforts and receive tailored recommendations on how to maximize impact by the end of 2024. Welcome to this episode of Intentional Inclusion, where we delve into the crucial topic of the "leaking pipeline" and explore actionable strategies to ensure talent retention and growth within your organisation.

In today's episode, we define the talent pipeline stages and explain the metaphor of the leaking pipeline. The talent pipeline encompasses the entire journey of an employee within an organisation, from recruitment to leadership. However, many organisations face the challenge of losing valuable talent at various stages, particularly those from underrepresented groups. This leakage not only hinders diversity and inclusion efforts but also incurs significant costs related to talent loss and replacement.

We begin by unpacking the concept of the leaking pipeline and then provide insights and data from various industries to highlight the prevalence and impact of the leaking pipeline. For instance, in the tech industry, women and minorities often leave at higher rates due to unaddressed biases and lack of career advancement opportunities. In finance, the loss of diverse talent results in a homogenous leadership, which can stifle innovation and limit market reach.

Next, we discuss the financial implications of a leaking pipeline. Research shows that replacing an employee can cost up to 200% of their annual salary, considering recruitment, onboarding, and training expenses. Moreover, the intangible costs of lost knowledge, decreased morale, and disrupted team dynamics further emphasize the need for effective talent retention strategies.

Our conversation then transitions to practical steps organizations can take to address this issue, following our unique framework of Awareness to Action to Accountability:

  1. Awareness: Understand the current state of your talent pipeline by collecting and analysing demographic data. Identify where leaks occur and why. Awareness involves recognizing the biases and barriers that affect employee retention.

  2. Action: Implement targeted interventions to plug these leaks. We discuss improving onboarding processes to ensure new hires feel welcomed and supported from day one. Invest in ongoing training and development programs to cater to the diverse needs of your workforce. Develop and enforce inclusive policies that promote flexibility and equity. Establish support systems like Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and mentorship programs to provide networks for underrepresented employees.

  3. Accountability: Set measurable goals for diversity and inclusion, and track progress regularly. Hold leadership accountable by including D&I metrics in performance evaluations. Conduct regular reviews of D&I efforts and publish transparent reports on the outcomes. Celebrate successes and learn from challenges to continuously refine your strategies.

As we wrap up, we encourage listeners to take our framework and create their own roadmap to fixing their leaking pipeline. By following these steps, organisations can build a more inclusive, equitable, and thriving workplace. For those seeking further assistance, The Diversity Doctor consultancy is here to help. Contact us to learn how we can support your D&I journey.

Don't miss this informative and actionable episode. Tune in now to start sealing the leaks in your talent pipeline and fostering a more inclusive environment for all!

In this weeks episode I share some shocking facts about the meeting madness phenomenon we have created and I walk you through practical ways to reduce the amount of time we spend in unproductive meetings, so you can give yourself and your team the gift of time, and basically get back to getting shit done.

Can you believe we spend between 2 and 5 hours a day in meetings! The vast majority of us think that most of the time spent in meetings is a waste of time! In fact 70% of us believe our job satisfaction would improve if we attended fewer meetings. Whilst 65% of us agree that frequent meetings impact our productivity.

Meetings are a reflection of our broader organisational culture, so these facts and figures don't read to me like part of a thriving culture. Which is why I am on a mission to help you break free of this time and energy sapping culture we have created. Over the course of the next three episodes I am going to help you go from awareness to action and embark on a new way of doing meetings. Meetings that are efficient, effective and equity driven. Meetings that take up less of your time and yet enable you achieve more.

We're going to start by reflecting on what your current meeting culture is like. So we can highlight the great bits we want to keep and work on the bits that are slowing us down and leaving us feeling overworked and undervalued.

To help I have created a FREE resource to help you reflect on the next four meetings you attend. You can access the FREE REFLECTION WORKBOOK here and start breaking free of the meeting madness culture today.

Welcome to "Intentional Inclusion with The Diversity Doctor," where we explore the transformative power of diversity and inclusion in our everyday lives. In this episode, titled "Choosing Inclusion: Transforming Everyday Actions into Impact," we delve into the profound quote by Nelle Borrero: "Diversity is a fact, but inclusion is a choice we make every day."

Diversity and inclusion are not just buzzwords – they're fundamental principles that shape our workplaces, communities, and society. Studies show that diverse teams are more innovative, productive, and profitable. However, achieving true inclusion requires intentional effort. According to research, 40% of employees feel isolated at work, highlighting the pressing need for inclusive practices.

Throughout the episode, we explore the intersection of facts, figures, and actionable steps to create a culture of inclusion. We uncover compelling insights, such as the correlation between diverse management teams and organizational performance. Despite these benefits, many organisations struggle to foster inclusive cultures, with only a small percentage of employees believing their leaders prioritise inclusion.

For example a study by glass door found that companies with an inclusive onboarding programme are twice as likely retain diverse hires, which makes economic sense considering the costs involved in hiring and the fact that replacing an employee can cost as much as 33% of their annual salary. If you want to find out more about embedding D&I practices into your onboarding programme, access our FREE resource here and take advantage of our FREE onboarding audit.

Listen to the full episode for more practical steps for everyday inclusion. From listening and learning to challenging bias and promoting equity, each action contributes to a culture of belonging. Want to know more about combating biases, access our FREE resource here, and take a listen to episode #1 of this podcast.

Drawing from personal experiences, we reflect on the power of small, intentional actions in fostering inclusion. And to conclude, we emphasize that inclusion is not a one-time decision – it's a daily commitment. By embracing diversity and actively choosing inclusion in our everyday actions, we can create transformative change in our workplaces and beyond.

Join us on "Intentional Inclusion with The Diversity Doctor" as we navigate the journey of choosing inclusion and transforming everyday actions into impactful outcomes. Tune in, learn, and lead with intention.

In episode #6, I talk about how the identification and removal of barriers is key to any kind of diversity and inclusion work. In other words understanding what is it that prevents someone from entering and then feeling safe in any given space.

If a group of people are missing from any space, it is because there have been barriers or roadblocks along the way that have held them back, slowed them down or simply prevented them from even getting a foot in the door.

I know that better decisions are made when diverse voices contribute to the decision making process. I know that people thrive when they feel safe. I know it’s a basic human need to belong. I know that diverse and inclusive organisations out perform those filled with just one type of person. I know that it is my life’s work to help identify and break down barriers which leave people feeling excluded.

BUT I also know that doesn’t mean everyone should be included in every space.

Inclusion does not mean including everyone. Being inclusive does not mean we walk through life without boundaries. We all have the right to draw a line on the type of behaviour we feel is acceptable. We all have the right not to be in the same space as someone else.

Barriers can stop us feeling safe in a space, boundaries can help us feel safe and included in a space.

In this episode I explain the difference between barriers and boundaries and share some practical and personal examples of both. As most things are, this one is closely linked to understanding your WHY for D&I, so if you would like a refresher or additional resources linked to this topic please check out episode #3

Diversity and inclusion work is all about creating spaces where more than one type of person feels included. But so many places and spaces are sounded by barriers that prevent many of us from entering or feeling safe in that space.

In this episode I share some practical examples of different types of barriers from the world of sport and business.  I give you an insight into my D&I superhero spidey sense which I use to identify barriers and I share some practical ways you too can identify and remove many of these barriers.

Please excuse my poor attempt at creating a sound effect, I hope this doesn't get in the way of you simply enjoy another episode of Intentional Inclusion with me The Diversity Doctor.

Simon Sinek famously said "People don't buy what you do; they buy why you do it." If you want people to buy in to your D&I efforts, if you want to create positive change within your organisation, if you want to truly develop a Diverse, Inclusive, Value lead and Equity drive DIVE culture, where everyone and your bottom line can THRIVE, then you need to start with your WHY for D&I.

In this episode I explain why starting with WHY is so important, I'll give you lot's of examples of WHY statements and I have a great FREE resource to help you create your own WHY for D&I statement - which you can access here

I’m passionate about every aspect of diversity and inclusion but the things I’m talking about in this episode, take it to the next level - this episode is all about impact.

Did you know that the hiring of chief diversity and inclusion officer soared to 111% (as a share of all hires) during 2021? But around half of these new hires are likely to burnout in the first 18 months in the role?

Or that despite 97% of large companies running diversity and inclusion programmes of some sort, only 25% of underrepresented groups feel these programmes have directly benefited them?

Long story short, we look like we're doing a lot, but what we're doing is not making an impact - and I'm all about impact! That's why this episode is dedicated to the five things you need to know about diversity and inclusion in 2022...

Number One…It’s not about the minority
Number Two…You’ve got to stop faking it
Number Three…Go all in
Number Four…Be SMARTER
Number Five…Know your limits

I dive into each of these during this value packed episode, so hit play to find out more, and why not also check out this blog post

Did you know we receive 11 million bits of information per second, but we can only process 16 to 14 bits? Now I'm a qualitative researcher, not a numbers person, but even I can see these numbers don't add up! So what happens to all those other bits of information that we can't consciously process?

They end up being dealt with by our subconscious, that uses shortcuts to quickly process this overwhelming amount of information.  It's a vert efficient system but it's not very effective because it's a breading grown from unconscious biases - and that's the topic of today's podcast.

Specifically I talk about three different yet common unconscious biases, one that I have only just come to realise is one I need to watch out for. I share with you examples of how and where they may show up and I give you practical tips to help overcome them.

If you'd like to know more about unconscious biases, how they show up in the workplace and how to overcome them, I have the perfect FREE resource for you, just click on this link to access The Diversity Doctor's A-Z Guide to Workplace Biases until next week my friend.
