21 days until Summer! We love training in the summer. It's beautiful. Everyone wants to be outside. Ice cream and slushies just hit different. It is also HOT. Heat is an element of summer that we all kind of react to differently. Some really enjoy the heat. Others can stand the heat. Heat (like freezing temperatures) can have a big influence on the way we choose to train and how well we perform. That is why we thought it would be a great idea to speak with someone that has done a little research on 'How to stay cool.'

To refresh the memories, we had Ryan on the podcast in episode 012, where he talked about how we need to stop breathing the wrong way. In this episode, Ryan gives us tips on how to stay cool before and during training in the heat.

Ryan is certified in Functional Movement, and through out the process of becoming certified, breathing techniques and heat management are only some of the things he quickly became a passionate about within the required material.

It’s the holiday season! Bring on the holiday foods! For this episode, we talked all things food. Because let’s be honest, we love it. Especially all the home cooking that’s about to go down! (I'm getting hungry already!) We also talked about the new year and went over nutritional tips and advice on how to begin planning your year to stay fueled so you can tackle all your big goals!

Our guest today is no stranger to the Woven Athlete Community. We had her on the podcast before on episode 014, and we needed more from her. So today you get to hear from Pro Athlete and Registered Sports Dietitian, Corinna Coffin! She is the best. If you haven't heard our last episode with her, then do yourself a favor and go back to listen! (We'll even make it easy and link it below😉) We caught up and chatted about the last 3 months of her life (weddings, ACL Recovery, and more). Then we jump in to the meat and potatoes of conversation (pun intended).

As a Registered Sports Dietitian and Nutritionist, Corinna breaks down the upcoming holiday season for us. She helps us all check ourselves and make sure we have the right expectations and behavior around food and the holiday season, and how to set ourselves up for a good 2023! Do we skip breakfast to make room for Thanksgiving dinner? How about dessert, should we skip the sugary holiday treats? How do we prepare for 2023? Well, I guess you're going to have to listen to find out all the details! This is a fun one!

As always, please please subscribe on whatever platform you listen and share this episode with a friend! Those two simple thing help spread the word about what we're doing here at Woven Athlete Podcast. (Rates and Reviews help a lot too 😉)

Series: "Overcomers"

Whether Drugs, Alcohol, or Violence, we prevail. Our goal in this series is to learn from the stories of those who have graduated from the "School of Hardnocks."

In this episode, we sat down with Endurance Athlete, OIF Veteran, Man of Faith, and Sobriety Advocate, Scott Giltner. Scott was an avid baseball player from a good family, until, alcohol was introduced to him as a kid by a person of authority in his life. Everything changed from then on. He shares with us his journey through alcoholism, time spent in the military, and how it all came to a boiling point. It wasn't until he found himself in the cell of his jail that it all... well, I guess you'll have to listen to find out! And trust me, you'll want to listen. What an inspiring turn of events! We left this recording feeling encouraged and inspired and we hope you do too.

This episode is number 3 in our current series, "Overcomers" so make sure you go back and listen to the first two episodes with Mat Quinlan and Summer Peterson! This may be our favorite series yet.. but shhhh don't tell anyone!

Series: "Overcomers"

Whether Drugs, Alcohol, or Violence, we prevail. Our goal in this series is to learn from the stories of those who have graduated from the "School of Hardnocks."

“Getting called out was what caused things to shift.” - Summer Peterson

In this episode, we sat down with Former D1 NCAA Soccer player and Respiratory Therapist, Summer Peterson. Summer lived a decent upbringing and was always a competitor. Though partying in high school was on the regular, it wasn't until she was playing Division 1 Soccer and trying to find her way in college, that drugs were introduced. After doing the typical college weekend partying, trying a drug one time quickly became an every weekend necessity. Summer admits that she dug her hand a little too deep into the scene and things had to change. Great episode and story about overcoming the addiction that comes from telling yourself you need it. We had a great time with Summer and we talk with her about Soccer, Mexican Food, faith, and sports mentality and how it’s changing overtime.

Podcast Series "Overcomers"

Whether Drugs, Alcohol, or Violence, we prevail. Our goal in this series is to learn from those who have graduated from the "School of Hardnocks."

How do athletes perform the way they do after what they have witnessed or been through?

**Listener's discretion advised.

In this episode, we interview Mat Quinlan. Mat had to learn how to do life at age 6, after watching a family member take a beating. From there, he never had the support that you would expect and hope any child would get. Leading into middle school and high school, gangs became family. It wasn’t until he met a kid from school that would spend time with him over donuts and hot chocolate during class, that things would begin to change. Mat brings us along his childhood story, one that is riddled with abuse and neglect, and how he chose to never adopt a “victim” mentality. Faith and family became a huge part of his journey. But today's episode isn't all hard stories but is one filled with hope and joy. We also spend time laughing and talking Spartan races and competition.

Mat is an example of grit, never giving up, and choosing to rise and overcome the difficulties of life.

Series: "During is Endurance."

"No matter how hard you try, you will almost never find the 'perfect training plan.' A good coach can help guide you towards that, but a great coach will give you the toolset needed to eventually guide yourself." - Ryan Atkins.

Throughout this series, we dove into the topic of endurance and we got to hear from specialist and pros on the lessons learned and resources gained through their practice and experience. In this book-end episode, we have Pro Endurance Athlete and OCR World Champ Ryan Atkins sharing his knowledge and philosophy about what he's learned on the topic of endurance.

We had a great time learning from Ryan. He's been doing this for over a decade and what he has practiced has proved time and time again to work! The simple methods he's been following have been working! Ryan even shares about whether or not he would join the olympics if OCR was a part of the pentathlon. Fencing? Why Not!?

Series: “DURING is ENDURING: Mental Strategy When Things Get Intense”

It’s a specialist episode! We like to switch it up and not just hear from the Pro’s, but also from the specialists.

On Today’s episode, we invited Ryan Lashlee on to specifically talk about the effects of breathing on mental and athletic performance.

Ryan is certified in Functional Movement, and through out the process of becoming certified, breathing techniques quickly became a passion of his within the required material.

Humans have to breath to survive, but surprisingly, we breath incorrectly most of the time. What Ryan shares is that through techniques and studies, there has been proven ways to improve stress, anxiety, and athletic performance through how we allow oxygen in and out of our lungs!

So much to learn from this episode and we barely hit it all! Make sure to look up all the resources and specialists Ryan mentioned in this episode to learn more on what he talked about. Enjoy!

Series: "DURING is ENDURING: Mental Strategy When Things Get Intense"

Today we got to hang out and share conversation with the new Hyrox World Champion and Spartan Elite Podium finisher Kris Rugloski. Kris is an animal in every sport she does and she does it with a smile. If you've seen Kris compete it's likely you have already begun to associate her competing with a giant smile, and she let us in on why she is always smiling and how it's helped her in really tough competition moments.

Kris loves all different types of endurance sports and has had her fair share of OCR races, trail races, and even several 100 mile ultra marathons. Her most recent achievement includes winning Hyrox World Championships (making her the new World Champion) in Las Vegas then less than 12 hours later she found herself a spot on the podium in Big Bear, Ca at the Spartan North American Elite Series. I told you, she's an absolute animal in what ever sport she chooses.

Kris is not only physically strong, she is also extremely mentally strong. She talks with us today about how incredibly important a strong mind is and how it all starts with the choice of gratitude. She shares her story of what led her to becoming an athlete, how she switches her mindset admits the "pain cave" of competition, and how much she genuinely loves what she does.

We left this conversation feeling so encouraged and inspired to live a life led by gratitude. We hope you enjoy it just as much as we do! Thank you for listening and sharing Woven Athlete are so grateful for you! (Do you see what I did there? ha!)

Timeout! Stop and ask yourself these 3 questions. (Available on the podcast).

We are taking a quick timeout from our series "Pregaming it - Mental preparation before the challenges."

As athletes, we sometimes need to pause to allow our minds to catch up. We live in a fast pace world and being an athlete comes with a lot of demand, both internally and externally. If we aren't careful and monitoring our day to day load, we can easily find ourselves going through the motions. Never take your love and passion for the game lightly, or you'll find yourself performing out of obligation.

In this episode, there are 3 questions we ought to ask ourselves. Grab a journal, get coffee and discuss this with a friend, mentor or coach, and see what you come up with!

Timeouts are great. We get a quick breather, we get refocused and strategize, and we jump back in!

Series: “Pre-Gaming It: How To Mentally Prepare Before The Competitions”

Today, we kick off our new series for the month and what better way then to start with Olympic Sport Climber, Kyra Condie! We were so excited for this interview and Kyra was such a fun person to hang and chat with.

In this episode we talked about a wide variety of things covering chocolate chip pancakes, hacky sack, how she prepares for competitions in 3 categories: nutritionally, mentally, and physically, and about her experience in the 2020 Olympics and what it looked like to train for it amidst the pandemic delaying it a whole year.

Kyra also shared with us her journey to becoming a professional athlete and some very big physical battles she has to face every time she steps up to the wall.

What an incredible and inspirational story Kyra has and we can’t wait for you to hear it. We hope you’re encouraged by her resilience, transparency, and grit just as much as we are.

Kyra is a professional sport climber on the USA National Team and was one of four athletes on the USA Sports Climbing Team to represent the US in the 2020 Olympics where Sport Climbing made its first ever debut in the Olympic Games. What a historical moment for Kyra and the rest of the Olympic Team!

Series: “I Think I Can or I Can’t: Managing Healthy and Unhealthy Expectations As An Athlete”

In today’s episode we got the chance to sit and talk with Performance Coach and Behavioral Change Consultant, Graham Roberts. He works with world class athletes to see them reach peak performance mentally. Graham is also an endurance athlete himself. His most recent venture has been co-founding NOX Coaching with endurance athlete legend, Ryan Atkins.

In our conversation about expectations as an athlete today, Graham throws us a curve ball as he suggests removing expectations from the table as we know it, and reframing the question entirely.

We dive deep into what expectations should look like, imposter syndrome, inner critic, and how to focus on the task at hand. It is an incredible conversation and Graham is a deep well of knowledge in all things behavior, performance, and the athletic world.

Series: "I think I can or I can't: Managing Healthy and Unhealthy Expectations as an Athlete."

In today's episode, we interview Pro Endurance Athlete Rylan Schadegg. Rylan is an all around athlete. He is one of those guys that has the gift of picking up almost any sport and making it happen. He began his competitive journey at an early age. It started with soccer for years. He then found interest in Mountain Biking, which lead to him becoming pro. When he is not going up and down mountains, he works as a Fire Fighter. His endurance, mixed with size and speed made it perfect for him to give Spartan Races a try. His abilities landed him a spot amongst the greats in the sport and the future is bright for where his career is heading.

Rylan opens up with Woven Athlete about how he actually had to take a break from training and competing professionally in order to take care of an eating disorder. What Rylan shares in this podcast is what so many others would benefit from hearing when it comes to healthy and unhealthy expectations as an athlete. This episode is honest and inspiring, so throw on some headphones and be encouraged!

Series: "I think I can or I can't: Managing Healthy and Unhealthy Expectations as an Athlete."

What are expectations, are they healthy, and why do we have them?

In today’s episode we brought in professional clinical counselor, Kaity Wilson, to talk about managing healthy and unhealthy expectations. Man, what a conversation we get into! She brings some heat today as she unravels the stigma on mental health and mental health needs, our inner critic as athletes, and why we often equate our identity with the outcome of our expectations.

Physical Needs = Mental Needs = Normal/Not Weird

Mental Health Needs Check List:

  • How is your sleep?
  • How is your appetite?
  • How is your focus?

Kaity, a former collegiate athlete herself, now works as a trauma therapist for a non-profit here in Southern California focused on trauma recovery for human-trafficking survivors as well as a professional clinical counselor for a private practice.

Reach out to Kaity or us at Woven Athlete for resources to keep your mental game strong.
