The Other Stories Podcast: Recent Episodes

Rachel Maunder

The Other Stories Podcast is a collection of honest, open and sometimes candid conversations with people from a whole range of marginalised, under-represented and unheard groups who share their stories about feeling different from the mainstream, of feeling ‘other.’

By inviting them to share their stories of how they felt different, how they were treated differently and how they would prefer to be treated going forward, my intention is to give you an opportunity to walk a while in their shoes, to listen and learn and ultimately to make some small changes in your attitude and behaviour so that you become even more inclusive.

When we walk in others’ shoes, we start to understand and when we understand, the world becomes a kinder place.

People who find themselves in that situation are known as Twice exceptional, or 2E and in this episode of The Other Stories Podcast Kanan Tekchandani shares how seeking to understand some of her son’s traits and attributes actually helped her make sense of her own and her husband’s life too by learning what it means to be 2E.

Kanan is a holistic Neurodiverse Coach and Relationship Whisperer.

As someone who identifies with the terms Highly Sensitive Person, Aspergers/autism, giftedness and twice-exceptionality herself, she connects intuitively with her neurodivergent clients.

She specialises in working with adults and parents who are highly intelligent and successful in their field but struggle to create deep connection in their relationships with partners, children or parents. Anxiety and overwhelm regularly impacts their physical health and sense of well-being.

Using a mind-body-spirit approach she tailors her support to help individuals and families to heal and live a life of happiness, fulfilment and success.

As the podcast reaches its 20th episode, host Rachel Maunder takes a moment to review and reflect the stories shared so far.

With a common theme of her guests wanting the people around them to challenge their own assumptions about otherness, what also becomes clear is the regular overlap of themes and experiences, all reinforcing the view that while a formal diagnosis can often be helpful, we all need to take care not to put people into boxes.

As someone who’s known overindulgence from the inside looking out, join us for this episode with Duncan BB where he shares some insights and ideas on how to take the first steps out of that place and how to best support someone close to you who you’d like to see take those steps. It’s no spoiler to say that reminding them of the health risks is definitely not the best way!

About Duncan Bhaskaran Brown:

Duncan has done his fair share of over indulgence, strictly speaking he’s drunk more than his fair share of wine and eaten more than his fair share of cake.

Along the way he found himself in some interesting places like on stage with S-Club, a stint as Mayor of his home town and Morris dancing in Westminster Abbey.

After 20 years of over-doing it, he cleaned up his act and trained with the Easyway clinic, the world’s most successful stop smoking service. Now he spends his time helping people push over-indulgence out of their life.

He lives in Abingdon with one wife, one daughter and two bonsai trees.

What does perfect sight look like – really? And what does it mean when you’re told that you don’t have it? What do the others see that you don’t? These are just some of the questions Amanda Harris wondered about as a young child, in awe of children that she could see running around at what seemed to her dangerously fast speeds, with no concept of what they could see that she couldn’t. Listen in this episode to her insights and reflections on perception and possibilities. About Amanda: Amanda Harris has been visually impaired since birth. During her childhood, there was an emphasis on what she couldn’t do, and at the age of seventeen she was receiving benefits and classed as “unemployable”. However, having gained her Law Degree, she rose to become Departmental Head of HR for her local council, before taking voluntary redundancy to set up her own Will Writing business in 2011. Amanda is married to Martyn, who is totally blind, and they have a teenage son. Amanda’s book “She Will Never…” is due to be published in October 2022. It is a funny, honest and moving story of a life with visual impairment, and a family with differing abilities. www.amandaharris.co.uk hello@amandaharris.co.uk (3) Amanda Harris | LinkedIn (2) Amanda Harris | Facebook About the host Rachel Maunder Rachel Maunder is a Story Coach, helping people find and craft their personal stories for greater engagement through speaking. A story of strength through adversity! Born without a lens in her right eye, an impairment that is obvious for all to see, the behaviours of others around her as a child (in most cases completely unconscious on their part), left Tanya feeling she was 'less than' other children and she created a story for herself that she wasn't worthy of praise. Listen to our conversation about how those experiences along with the trauma she experienced in her early twenties resulted in complex PTSD that went undiagnosed for many years. Tanya found the courage to face up to the fact that something wasn’t right and the resulting diagnosis has been life changing. Someone who shows great compassion in the face of all that she has had to deal with, Tanya wants to share her experience of PTSD to help others find the courage to take a step towards diagnosis. She also decided to talk about her experiences of the behaviours of others towards her visible disability to encourage us all to step back, pause and think about why we are reacting to certain people and situations in the way that we do.

About Tanya Gaffon Tanya Gaffon is a mum first and a business owner second. She runs a marketing business helping other small business owners and solopreneurs to stand out through working with them on how to engage in smarter marketing.
