This Is 50 takes an honest look at women over 50 who are making sh*t happen. Host Lynette Turner interviews her guests about their personal and professional successes, failures, dreams, and everything in between!
Lynette covers topics like finding a purpose, balancing motherhood and ambition, building a successful business or side hustle, and finding the courage to reinvent a lifelong career. The real-life stories in this podcast will help you in designing your second act.
Some of the best business ideas do not begin with a business plan. They begin with a problem you need solved in your own life.
Beth Heyer could not find the kind of reliable, flexible childcare she needed after moving to a new city. Instead of continuing to search, she built Babysitting Connection. The company now operates across five cities, and Beth helps other women turn similar service ideas into structured, scalable businesses.
In this episode, Beth explains how to recognize a problem worth building around, research whether other people need the same solution, and turn your experience into a business model that can grow beyond you. She also shares practical advice on hiring your first employee, setting short-term goals, building systems and using what you learn to help others. It is a grounded conversation for women who want to turn what they already know into real income.

If you’ve been trying to grow your business but feel exhausted by social media, this episode will feel like a relief. Sena Wheeler, founder of Sena Sea, built a direct-to-consumer seafood business by leaning into one simple habit: a weekly email that connects, teaches, and sells.
Sena comes from a fifth-generation fishing family, has a background in nutrition and food science, and built her business while raising three small kids. Her turning point came when she realized email gave her something social media didn’t: a clear connection between what she shared and the sales that followed.
In this conversation, we talk about confidence, entrepreneurship, selling without feeling pushy, and how women in business can build momentum without trying to keep up with every trend. If you’re starting over after 40, growing a business in midlife, or looking for a simpler way to stay visible, this episode gives you a practical reminder: your business does not need more noise. It needs one clear system you can repeat.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re doing everything “right,” but you still can’t get past an invisible ceiling, this episode is for you. We talk about the glass ceiling within and how it shows up as over-delivering, people-pleasing, and overthinking, even when you look confident on the outside.
My guest is a consultant psychotherapist, psychodynamic mentor, and self-esteem expert with decades in practice. She explains why high-functioning anxiety can masquerade as ambition, why your nervous system can normalize stress until you don’t even notice it, and how micro-trauma creates the invisible scripts that shape your confidence, boundaries, and business decisions.
You’ll also get simple, practical steps you can use today: where you’re over-giving to feel enough, where you’re holding back instead of speaking up, and one small action that proves to your brain that the ceiling won’t fall in.
Keywords naturally included: midlife reinvention, confidence, purpose, entrepreneurship, starting over after 40, women in business.

In this episode of Midlife Women Entrepreneurs, Lynette Turner speaks with author Ana Hebra-Flaster about her memoir Property of the Revolution, a powerful family story about being forced to leave Cuba as a child. Ana shares what happened when her family had 48 hours to leave their home, taking only one suitcase, one change of clothes each, and none of the heirlooms or belongings that had shaped their life.
But this conversation is not only about what was lost. It is about what stayed. Ana talks about the courage of her elders, the family stories that became her inheritance, and the phrase her mother lived by: Ponte Guapa, which means to make yourself brave. Her story reminds us that confidence is not always something we feel first. Sometimes we build it by taking the next brave step.
For women navigating midlife reinvention, starting over after 40, entrepreneurship, purpose, or writing their own story, this episode offers a deeper look at how the past shapes who we become. Ana also shares why writing can be a path to healing, even if your story never becomes a published book. Sometimes your story matters because it helps you understand yourself. Sometimes it matters because it gives someone else permission to be brave too.

What happens when your business looks successful from the outside, but behind the scenes you are exhausted, underpaid, and quietly wondering how much longer you can keep going? In this episode of Midlife Women Entrepreneurs, Lynette Turner sits down with Molly Rolland, founder of HeartCast Media, to talk about rebuilding a business that is simple, profitable, and aligned with the life you actually want.
Molly shares the turning point that made her close a business that looked impressive on paper but left her depleted. With 18 employees, 160 artists, and a three-story building in Washington, DC, everything looked like success. But she was pouring into everyone else while no one was asking if she had anything left. Her story opens up a bigger conversation about confidence, purpose, entrepreneurship, and starting over after 40 without repeating the same burnout patterns.
This episode is for women in business who are tired of chasing visibility, social media approval, or offers that do not convert. You’ll learn how to look at what people will actually pay for, how to simplify your business model, why passion is not enough, and how podcasting can work as a real business development tool when used with strategy.

What if the problem isn’t that you gave up on a dream, but that you never had a big dream to begin with? In this episode, Debbie Weiss shares what happened when she hit 50 and realized she’d spent most of her life taking care of everyone else. She was burned out, overwhelmed, and quietly thinking, “So this is it.”
Debbie breaks down how midlife reinvention can start without a massive plan. She explains her “sprinkle” approach, tiny commitments that rebuild self-trust and confidence, even in seasons of grief and responsibility. You’ll hear how she used small steps to change her health, face financial stress, and eventually create a new path that includes books, products, and speaking.
If you’re starting over after 40, craving more purpose, and wondering where your confidence went, this will hit home. It’s a practical conversation about midlife reinvention, purpose, and entrepreneurship for women in business who feel stuck but know there’s more in them.

If your business marketing feels polished but flat, this episode will help you see why. Lynette Turner sits down with Shawna Suckow, author of Small Is Your Superpower and host of the Underestimated Podcast, to unpack why small businesses often lose traction when they try to sound too corporate, too perfect, or too broad.
In a special hot seat segment, Katherine joins the conversation so you can hear Shawna apply her framework in real time. That makes this episode especially useful because you do not just hear the ideas. You hear how to use them in an actual business scenario.
Shawna explains why trust is shifting away from big brands and toward smaller businesses that feel human, specific, and emotionally real. She shares simple examples of what makes people stop scrolling, how storytelling builds credibility faster than features and benefits, and why narrowing your message actually helps the right people find you.
This is a powerful conversation for women in business who are navigating midlife reinvention, building confidence, and trying to grow with more purpose. If you are starting over after 40, refining your entrepreneurship journey, or learning how to market with more clarity and less performance, this episode gives you practical ways to stand out without pretending to be something you are not.

A lot of midlife women want more flexible income now, not five years from now. But instead of finding a real path, they end up stuck in research mode, buying courses, second-guessing themselves, and giving up before they ever test what could actually work. In this episode, Lynette talks with voice actor and coach Carrie Olsen about one career path many women have never seriously considered: voiceover.
Carrie shares how she went from new mom and corporate employee to full-time voice actor working from home. She breaks down the real lanes in voiceover, how the industry has changed, what AI is changing, and why you do not need a stereotypical “voiceover voice” to begin. More importantly, she explains the smarter way to explore a new direction without overspending or getting overwhelmed.
This conversation is really about more than voiceover. It is about midlife reinvention, confidence, purpose, and entrepreneurship. It is about starting over after 40 in a way that is practical, grounded, and honest. If you have been sitting on an idea, waiting until you feel more ready, this episode will help you take a smaller, smarter first step.

Midlife can crack the old identity. Kids leave, jobs shift, relationships change, grief hits. Suddenly you can’t “logic” your way into peace, and you start asking everyone what to do.
In this solo episode of The Break It Down Room, inside the Midlife Women Entrepreneurs podcast, I break down the 3 signals behind your biggest choices, intuitive hit, gut feeling, and fear.
You’ll walk away with my Clarity Check, three simple questions that help you stop spiraling and take one small aligned step.

Corinne Goble, CEO of the Association of Women’s Business Centers, explains why waiting to explore funding until you urgently need it leads to fewer options, more stress, and rushed decisions. She walks you through what “capital-ready” really means, why clean financials and a simple forecast matter, and how to decide between loans and investors (including the real cost of equity). You’ll also hear how AI and platforms like TikTok and Instagram can help you test ideas faster, but why funders want stability beyond a single platform. Have you ever felt tired, but it’s not your body, it’s your energy? In this episode, I break down what happens when you’ve lived in “get it all done” masculine energy for years, and how that can quietly turn into burnout, numbness, and feeling disconnected from yourself.

A song can bring you back in seconds. Not just to a memory, but to a version of you.
In this Break It Down Room solo episode (inside Midlife Women Entrepreneurs), I share how music can act like a key to your “memory room,” bringing up both good and hard moments in a way that helps you feel more connected to yourself.
This episode includes a simple 10-minute ritual:
Listen if you want a softer way to reconnect with your past and feel proud of how far you’ve come.
If your skin feels drier, duller, or more reactive in midlife, you’re not imagining it. Your hormones shift, your skin’s needs change day to day, and a lot of “good skincare” habits can quietly backfire.
In this episode, a PhD skincare chemist breaks down what’s really happening as you move through perimenopause and menopause. You’ll learn the difference between dryness and dehydration, why over-cleansing can disrupt your glow, and how the skin microbiome fits into inflammation, sensitivity, and flare-ups. You’ll also hear why “skin type” can be misleading, what’s hype versus helpful in ingredient culture, and how to build a simpler routine you can actually stick to.
Listen if you want fewer steps, less guessing, and a smarter way to support your skin as it changes.

Did you miss your chance to start a business in midlife?
If you’re a woman in your 40s or 50s wondering whether it’s too late to reinvent yourself, start a side hustle, or launch something of your own, this episode is for you.
In this solo episode of The Break It Down Roominside the Midlife Women Entrepreneurs podcast, I challenge one of the biggest myths holding women back: that starting an online business means becoming a coach, launching a massive course, or building a complicated brand.
What if you don’t want to coach?
What if you just want to create?
In this episode, you’ll learn:
If you’ve been stuck in overthinking, fear, or confusion about where to start, this conversation will show you how to move forward with small, low-pressure steps.
It’s not too late.
It might finally be time.
If you’ve been stuck in cravings, food noise, or that “I’ll start over Monday” loop, you’re not broken. You’re probably carrying more stress than you realize, and your nervous system is trying to find relief.
In this episode, Sandy Zeldes breaks down what “hidden stress” looks like in high-functioning midlife women, why willpower keeps failing, and how cravings can be driven by emotional need instead of true hunger. We also talk about why this often hits critical mass in midlife, why chronic dieting can make it worse, and how to recognize self-sabotage without shaming yourself.
Sandy shares how tapping fits into her work as a practical tool for releasing trapped emotional stress so you can feel calmer, clearer, and back in control.

This episode helps you reconnect with yourself so you can move forward with more calm, clarity, and self-trust in midlife.
In Episode 4 of The Break It Down Room (inside Midlife Women Entrepreneurs), I guide you through a simple release exercise to help you spot the story you inherited, reframe it, and replace it with a new truth that actually fits your life now.
If you’ve been holding yourself back, feeling guilty for wanting more, or shrinking your wins to stay “safe,” this is for you. You’ll leave feeling lighter, more clear, and ready to take one brave step toward reclaiming your story this week.
In this episode of Midlife Women Entrepreneurs, Lynette Turner sits down with a business coach to explore why writing the book first can help midlife women find clarity, confidence, and direction.
Many midlife women feel invisible without realizing it. It shows up as second-guessing yourself, staying quiet, or freezing when you try to turn an idea into a business. You may know you want more from this chapter of life, but you don’t know what to offer, where to start, or how to use your experience.
This conversation breaks down why that happens and how starting a business in midlife often begins with naming what you already know. We talk about how writing a book helps women in business clarify their message, overcome mindset blocks, and build a personal brand rooted in lived experience, not trends or hustle culture.
You’ll hear why so many women waste years and money chasing programs instead of creating one clear foundation, how a book can become the starting point for coaching, speaking, or consulting, and why midlife is not the end of opportunity but the moment your wisdom finally matters.
If you’re a woman over 40 who feels stuck, unsure, or invisible, and you’re ready to stop shrinking and start creating something meaningful, this episode will help you rethink your next step.

Hey, beautiful souls.
I’m Lynette Turner, and welcome to The Break It Down Room, a solo series inside the Midlife Women Entrepreneurs podcast. These short action oriented episodes will drop on Tuesdays.
This is where I take the lessons from over 100 conversations I’ve had with powerful, inspiring midlife women and go deeper. Not into business tips.
But into soul shifts.
Because behind every reinvention, every new chapter, every business… there’s a truth most women never speak out loud.
And that’s what we’re unpacking here.
So if you’ve ever asked, “Who am I now?” Or “What’s next for me?” You’re in the right room.
Let’s break it down...
You’ve been responsible for a long time. But there’s a quiet midlife moment when you realize you’ve also been postponing what you really want.
In this episode of Midlife Women Entrepreneurs, I sit down with Tim Packer, a former Toronto police detective who walked away from the “safe” path to become a successful artist, teacher, and author. We talk about the one word that changes everything, yet, and why the story “I’m not talented enough” is almost always a mindset problem, not a reality problem.
You’ll hear the practical framework Tim uses to help people build skills without getting crushed by perfectionism: practice, process, and product. And you’ll walk away with a simple way to start now, even if you’re starting in your 40s, 50s, or beyond.

After 25 years in corporate HR at Pfizer, Johanna Danaher’s role was unexpectedly eliminated.
In this episode of Midlife Women Entrepreneurs, Johanna shares what really happens when a long, successful corporate career ends overnight. We talk honestly about grief, fear, identity loss, and the quiet wake-up call many midlife women aren’t prepared for.
This conversation explores why the corporate safety net is a myth, how to reframe “starting over” as transferable brilliance, and what it takes to design a business that supports both income and energy. We also unpack business model decisions, testing offers without perfection, and why progress matters more than getting it right the first time.

Midlife reinvention sounds exciting until you’re the one sitting in the middle of it. If you’ve ever felt stuck, lost, or unsure who you are anymore, this conversation will feel familiar.

We talk about why midlife reinvention feels so heavy, why women stay silent when they’re not okay, and how imposter syndrome shows up even after success. She shares the truth about losing a dream, grieving your old identity, and finding the courage to begin again.

In this episode of Midlife Women Entrepreneurs, Lynette sits down with Scarlett Stanhope, known as The Biz Hippie, to explore how your money habits reflect your identity, your safety, and the stories you’ve carried since childhood.
Scarlett shares her powerful journey from perfectionism and burnout to a near-death wake-up call that forced her to see her life differently. Today she helps women understand why their money stress isn’t about numbers, it’s about the deeper beliefs driving their choices.
You’ll learn:
• Why money is the cleanest mirror for your self-worth and safety

In this episode, Lynette sits down with Kevin Murphy, a master illustrator and founder of Evolve Artist, whose work has appeared in National Geographic, LucasArts, and even for the Rolling Stones.
After decades in the art world, Kevin now helps people from all walks of life (many starting in midlife) learn to paint realistically with zero “natural talent.”

If you're making money but still feel stuck, stressed, or unclear—you might be in a money fog. In this transformational episode, trailblazing money coach Mikelann Valterra (with over 25 years of experience) breaks down the emotional roadblocks that keep midlife women entrepreneurs from thriving—fear, overwhelm, and guilt.
We dive into how to recognize you're in a money fog, how it affects your pricing and business decisions, and—most importantly—how to lift it.
Mikelann reveals why most women have no idea what they actually need to earn, how perfectionism quietly sabotages income, and why undercharging is often rooted in emotional conditioning—not skill.
If you've ever underpriced your services, avoided your bank account, or thought, "Who am I to ask for that much?"—this is your wake-up call.
This episode isn't about spreadsheets. It's about freedom.
Get ready to shift your money mindset, reclaim your worth, and start treating money as the sacred tool it truly is.

You know that feeling when you put all your effort into something, and then when you finally achieve it, it turns out to be not quite what you thought?
Regardless of what you want, we create stories in our minds that affirm decisions instead of listening to our intuition that maybe it's not the right thing.
We've all been there, and on my latest episode of This Is 50, Theresa Smith shares the steps she worked through as she hit a crossroads in her journey of discovering "what's next."
Theresa is finally living her purpose as a leadership coach but only after realizing she was forging the wrong path forward.
As an experienced corporate executive and co-founder of a startup, Theresa finally learned to release the ego that was keeping her away from her life's purpose.
The life-changing moment came when she finally acknowledged what she refers to as the "breadcrumbs" that kept showing up on her path but never actioned.
This moment made her realize that she's always been fueled by helping others grow and develop rather than continuing to exploit her functional expertise.
Theresa wanted to find a way to help leaders be their best and impact the world. Fast forward 3 years, and Theresa is now running her own business - The LeaderSmith.
Tune in to hear how following the breadcrumbs eventually turned into a business aligned with her purpose and values and how she leaned on her community to make it happen.
"My purpose is to make the world a better place through leadership by helping leaders on their journey." - Theresa

Your life is your personal story in which you are the hero: the main character, the protagonist who navigates a journey to overcome conflict.
But in every story, there is a villain, the antagonist of your story whose motivations and actions oppose you and cause conflict.
For many of us, our purpose can be the hero behind the mask. It drives us to keep going, even when a villain shows up to knock you off course. It's at these moments when knowing your purpose will give you the strength to get back up and remind you of why your story matters.
This week's guest and host of the radio show "What She Said," Candace Sampson, shares her story filled with hero moves and the villains who tried to knock her off course.
Candace has always allowed herself to be in the flow of the direction life takes her. In this episode, Candace shares with us how, as a serial entrepreneur, she turned her school supplies business into a chance at running her own radio show that has become a platform for women's voices to be heard.
While building up her business, she endured the financial impacts of covid and a messy divorce, all while raising her two daughters. It hasn't been an easy journey, but with the help of a few heroes, Candace rose above the villains of her story. Tune in to get inspired by her journey and the resilience she showed along the way.

Have you ever dreamed about relocating to a new town or city? Maybe you're newly an empty-nester or just looking for a change in mid-life or beyond. Packing up your life and moving to a new place can be scary and exciting at the same time.
If you are thinking about relocation, this episode is for you! My guest, Margaret Vandergriff, is the founder of a program called "Your Place Finder" - helping people in mid-life find their new dream place with intention. Margaret is no stranger to relocation. When she first relocated to Iowa, she quickly learned from her own mistakes. This experience and 'aha moment' led her to start her program - where she created a roadmap for individuals looking to do the same.
This episode shows that inspiration for a business can come from anywhere - particularly your own unique experiences. We talk about finding your niche and the importance of refining it, tips on starting your search for a new location, and dive into Lynette & Margaret's personal experiences with moving.

The fear of a career change at any age is scary but even scarier in midlife.
The idea of changing careers later in your life is overwhelming, but what's worse is staying in a state of status quo because of fear.
In this episode, I invited my friend, Sylvie Linteau, to join me in a conversation on how she left a secure 20-year career as a teacher and shifted her focus to becoming a full-time real estate agent.
Sylvie walks us through what made her decide to finally take the plunge and break free from the golden handcuffs of her position as a teacher.
"I was hitting a wall. It was like groundhog day every day, and I was not fulfilling my full potential. I thought: I have 10-15 years left to work, and I need a change." - Sylvie
This episode is for you if you're considering pivoting in your career. Sylvie shares her tips on overcoming the fear that held her back, how she manifested her dreams, got back her "joie de vivre," and what it takes to make the change with confidence and faith.

Whether you are a mom, a corporate executive, or an employee, you've experienced some level of burnout - perhaps without even realizing it. Or you're just tired of living in the "sameness" of every day. Taking a step in a new direction is the hardest part - it takes self-worth. Knowing that you can achieve what's on the other side, that you deserve it, and that you have what it takes. Taking the leap stops many people in their tracks when they dont come from a place of self-worth.
This week, Encore Life Academy (ELA) alumni Karen Hogg shares her journey as she switched from corporate VP to a self-started consulting business. When Karen felt the burnout of her corporate career, she started asking herself, "do I want to do the same thing I've been doing for the next 15 years?" This reality allowed her to shift her focus to building out her consulting practice.
Disclaimer: it doesn't happen overnight. It takes patience, self-worth, and getting clear on your goals. If you have ever felt like Karen, tune in to hear how she overcame imposter syndrome, tips on building out a business, leveraging your network, transferring the skills you already have, & more! If you give it a shot, you just might surprise yourself with the outcome.

"I don't have enough time or money to build a business." - "No one will like what I have to offer." - "I've never done it before; I'm not an expert."
We know this negative self-talk all too well. The limiting beliefs or chokeholds make us afraid to take a chance on ourselves. It's time to break free from the chokeholds holding you back.
My guest this week, Doug Howorko, entrepreneur & author of Breaking the Chokehold, dives into the various chokeholds that stop us from achieving our true purpose.
These chokeholds come in many forms - whether it be conformity from our youth to do what we are "supposed to" do, fear of the unknown, the "golden handcuffs" we call responsibilities or a feeling of selfishness.
Doug talks about how he changed the song of his life from Hokey Pokey to Kickstart Your Heart!
What song are you living? It's time to change the theme song of your life. It all starts with deciding to make a change.

Menopause is a word that carries so many misconceptions, fears, and bullsh*t. In this episode, my guest and I are breaking new ground on the developmental stages of women after 50.
Neuropsychiatrist Dr. Louann Brizendine, the NYT bestseller author, joins me in sharing her reframe on menopause, aka The Upgrade.
Dr. Louann takes us through some highlights of her new book, The Upgrade - How the Female Brain Gets Stronger and Better in Midlife and Beyond.
We cover everything from the three stages of the Upgrade, Radical Self Care, newfound purpose in your second half, hormone therapy, protecting your energy, to sex in the Upgrade.
"From my life, the lives of women who've come to see me, my friends, and the research, I know that freedom from the reproductive phase is an amazing, extraordinary, and now a much longer period of a woman's life than ever. I think the Upgrade can redefine what it means to be female." - Dr. Louann

Confidence is a word that gets thrown around often and can feel intimidating. The truth of the matter though-confidence isn't something born into you; it's a skill developed over time through practice! If you're willing to expand yourself through uncomfortable situations, you can learn any skill. T
his week, video & visibility coach Elaine Williams shares the importance of getting out of your shell on the theatre stage and on the stage of your own life. In this episode, we bust the three myths about confidence: we are born with it, we can't fake it, and you have to be an extrovert to have it.
What stops us from not caring about what people think of us? Being true to ourselves can help lead our lives towards happiness rather than feeling stuck or lost.
