Thea Riofrancos (@triofrancos) is an Associate Professor of Political Science whose research focuses on resource extraction, renewable energy, climate change, green technology, social movements, and the left in Latin America. Jackie and Thea talk lithium wars, extraction, green capitalism and imperialism, and how the transition to a renewable economy must reckon with settler colonialism and respect for Indigenous communities.
Thea is an assistant professor of political science at Providence College, an Andrew Carnegie Fellow (2020-2022), and a Radcliffe Institute Fellow (2020-2021). She authored Resource Radicals: From Petro-Nationalism to Post-Extractivism in Ecuador (Duke University Press, 2020) and co-authoredA Planet to Win: Why We Need a Green New Deal (Verso Books, 2019). She's written a number of academic articles in World Politics, Perspectives on Politics, and Cultural Studies. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Guardian, Boston Review, The Baffler, n+1, Dissent, Jacobin, among others.
Two friends walk into a bar...there's a giant disco ball spinning in the distance, made by the artist who created the studio 54 disco ball. One friends puts a drink in the other's hand. On May 6, 2021, Labor, climate justice activists, transportation justice advocates, and Democratic Socialists came together in San Francisco to rally and demand that the Metropolitan Transportation Commission unleash $1.4 billion of federal funding to restore transportation services around the Bay Area. Transportation represents 40% of California's emissions. If we want any shot at meeting our state's climate goals by 2030, public transportation post-pandemic needs to be free, fast, and seamless so that more people get out of their cars and rideshares and into buses and railway.

Daybreak PAC seeks candidates to support in four currently Democrat-held state senate districts that will have races with no incumbent in 2022, as well as candidates to challenge State Senate and Assembly members with disappointing records on AB 1400 (Guaranteed Healthcare for All), AB 387 (Social Housing Act of 2021), SB 467 (Fracking), AB 20 (Corporate-Free Elections Act), and other bills concerning tenant protections, fossil fuel extraction, public banking, decarceration, social housing, public education, and progressive taxation.

In this episode, Jackie confesses she's not actually raised in Long Beach, just born there. In fact, Jackie was raised in nearby Lakewood, CA, an L.A. suburb known to some locals as Fakewood, also known officially at one point as California's #1 Most Boring City. Just north of Lakewood sits the slightly more spicy town of Paramount. One score and some years ago, a young Capricorn by the name of Jupiter Peraza arrived from Mexico in the town of Paramount. At the time, she was a student learning English as best she could. Captured by critically acclaimed pictures such as That's So Raven and Princess Diaries, Jupiter soon developed dreams of living in the city by the Bay with the trollies and hills. To do that, she would have to study hard in her second language, survive a high school of more than 4,000 students, fend off a vampire boyfriend, and slay the dragon of DACA college bureaucracy. Jupiter not only made her own dreams come true, but decided to give back to her communities and become a warrior and community organizer for social justice, voter rights, Trans rights, and immigration justice. Not to mention helping flip the Senate in Georgia just a couple weeks ago. NBD.

While white supremacists threaten to storm the Capitol once again, San Francisco Supervisors are getting back to work to tackle the mess 2020 left us. Supervisor Matt Haney (@matthaneysf) has been a fierce advocate for renters rights, holistic solutions to homelessness, mental health, and mass incarceration, and one of the most vocal critics of corruption that has plagued San Francisco's Department of Public Works (DPW). Voters overwhelmingly passed both of Haney's ballot measures in November 2020--an excessive CEO tax and a measure to bring more oversight and transparency to DPW. Thirty-eight years ago on January 1st, 1983, doctors opened Ward 86 at San Francisco General Hospital, the first dedicated HIV clinic in the country. San Francisco, LGBTQ politics, and science has changed dramatically since 1983 thanks to activists, advocates, doctors, and HIV/AIDS survivors, but HIV survivors remain undersupported. On September 18, 2020, during the Coronavirus pandemic, a group of HIV long-term survivors and advocates released the San Francisco Principles 2020, a statement outlining the challenges of aging with HIV and the need for better care and more representation, demanding “Nothing About Us Without Us.” Jackie Fielder discusses the intersection of affordable housing, tenants rights, homelessness, and health justice with Michael Rouppet, who has faced HIV, eviction, and homelessness, and has been a board member director of Marty’s Place Affordable Housing Corporation, a housing counselor, sex health educator, transcendental meditator, and board member of the San Francisco Community Land Trust.

In the inaugural episode of Daybreak Podcast, Jackie Fielder and her campaign director Roisin Isner share the story of Jackie's 2020 campaign for California State Senate, District 11 (San Francisco, San Mateo County). Jackie ran without the support of corporations, billionaires, police unions, and all the other special interests standing in the way of progress. Of course, being a Coronavirus campaign, they had all the challenges one could imagine. They discuss going from zero to one hundred, making a surprising showing in the March 2020 primary, and the not-enough-but-still-something result of 191,060 votes in the November 2020 general election.
