I must admit, I nearly didn’t bother going this week. After a run of scorching hot days, the thought of sitting lakeside in 30-degree heat with the carp sulking in the margins wasn’t overly appealing. Yesterday had hit 30°C, and the forecast promised the same for the end of the week, but today was a different story altogether—just 22°C, overcast, with a welcome breeze moving across the lake. A short break in the relentless heatwave. That alone convinced me it was worth a go.
Ideally, I’d have liked to fish Tuesday into Wednesday night, as the conditions then looked even more promising, but work and commitments meant that wasn’t an option. So I settled for Wednesday into Thursday. Sometimes you just have to make do with the window you’ve got.
I rolled up around 1:30pm, gardening jobs done and dusted, and immediately felt a lift in mood compared to the past few stifling days. To my surprise, the lake was almost empty—only three other anglers dotted around. I honestly couldn’t remember the last time I’d seen it so quiet, probably not since the winter months.
Three Choices, One Bay, and an Eighteen-Pounder
It’s not often you walk onto a carp lake and find yourself with options — real options. Not the “one free swim nobody wants” kind of choice, but the sort where you actually stop and think for a moment, weighing up which peg might put you in front of the fish.
This week, luck was on my side. Meadow Lake, usually busy at the best of times, had space. Three swims stood empty, all of them with potential.
The wind was the deciding factor. A stiff south-westerly was pushing across the lake and piling straight into one of the bays. This wasn’t just a lazy breeze — it had that warm, pushing quality that can transform a swim. In my head, the picture formed instantly: coloured water pushing into the margins, food drifting in on the current, and carp using the cover of wind-chopped water to feed without fear.
After missing out on the lakes entirely last week—bar a few fleeting, frustrating hours by the river—I was itching for a proper session. The river had been enjoyable in its own way, but watching Chub ignore my hookbait for five hours tested my patience more than usual. You can catch up on all the drama from my last blog or video, but suffice to say, I was ready to return to somewhere with a proper bedchair, bivvy, and the solid thump of a big carp.
This week, I’d cleared the decks: three nights at my disposal. I’d planned to arrive at the lake around 2pm on day one, but the weather forecast looked atrocious. Every radar I checked showed a deluge sweeping across the South. So, I took the gamble—called off my gardening jobs and pointed the van towards Ringwood. Looking back now, I probably jumped the gun. The rain just didn’t show up near the lakes. Classic.
Back on the Riverbank
For the first time in a good few years, I found myself back on the riverbank—rod in hand, heart quietly hopeful. I wasn’t under any illusions of grandeur; this wasn’t about hauling out a barbel first cast or breaking personal bests. This trip was more of a test run—to see if my kit setup was workable and to rediscover that old river rhythm.
As it turned out, I wasn’t burdened with as much gear as I feared. You know how it usually goes—too many bits, bags full of "just in case" items—but surprisingly, I’d only brought a touch more than necessary. A few tweaks here and there and it’ll be bang on. It felt good just travelling light again, wandering down to the river with purpose but without pressure.
1545 – A Glimmer of Interest
I had a sudden, sharp take—well, sort of. It turned out to be an aborted one. Closer inspection showed the hook point had snagged a small twig, just enough to blunt it. Still, it told me something was down there, inspecting the bait and showing an interest in the swim. A glimmer of hope.
I was fishing with 8mm Big Fish Mix pellets and matching boilies as hookbaits. Ideally, I’d have used small PVA bags to create a tighter attraction around the rig, but in true riverbank fashion, I forgot to pack the PVA. First lesson learned—or maybe just re-learned.
The Case of the Vanishing Chub
What puzzled me most was the complete lack of interest from the chub. This spot should have screamed chub holding territory, yet I hadn’t even had a knock. Not a pluck, not a twitch. Nothing. I’d watched fish spook off the area earlier, but even that had slowed to a standstill. They weren’t having it.
I tied up two new rigs, making subtle adjustments in presentation, hoping a change might trip them up. Still, silence. The rigs looked spot on in the margins, but confidence alone wasn’t enough today. It had me questioning the whole setup, especially the main line. It might be time to switch to something finer, more supple, or just less visible before the next trip. There’s a niggling feeling it might be the final piece of the puzzle.
Calling Time
I held out until just before 10pm, but my session ended slightly earlier than planned—thanks to my head torch batteries giving up the ghost. And yes, I’d tested them over the weekend. Clearly not well enough. Another lesson chalked up.
Despite giving it my all, I left with a blank. Not even a nibble to show for my efforts. But honestly? It didn’t sting like it used to. I’d already made peace with this trip being more about learning than catching. That said, the lack of action has me itching to go back to the drawing board—reassess the rigs, rethink the baiting approach, and maybe do a bit more late-night research online.
The river’s a different beast to the stillwaters I’ve spent so much time on. It moves, it changes, and it demands your full attention. But I’m in no rush. This was just the beginning.

I wasn’t planning to arrive at the lake on a Monday night—not originally. But sometimes the stars align, or in this case, a shift in the weather, an open diary, and a nagging sense of timing all came together. I’ve learnt over the years not to ignore that instinct.
A large southwesterly weather front was sweeping through, bringing cloud cover, warmth, and that rolling, humid air pressure that often gets the carp on the move. If that wind hadn’t started hacking into the Airfield Lake, I probably would’ve stuck to the club water. Meadow hadn’t been producing much lately, despite that recent capture of the 50lber that caused a frenzy of activity down there. But realistically, it was only the stockies that had been coming out, and I had my theories as to why.
Some thought they hadn’t spawned yet; I wasn’t convinced. To me, it was more likely the lake was suffering from a nutritional imbalance—namely, a tidal wave of tiger nuts. Don’t get me wrong, carp love them. Love them a bit too much. The trouble is, they’re addictive but hard to digest. It can take three, even four cycles through a carp’s gut before they actually break them down, and in the meantime, the lake becomes one big recycling bin of tiger nuts. They’re being eaten, crapped out, and eaten again until eventually digested—if not by the same fish, then by another. While this is happening, the carp can end up losing condition. So no, Meadow wasn’t for me right now.
I needed somewhere I could build on something - a spot, a pattern, a little piece of rhythm with the lake. August was nearly upon us, and over the years, it had been a kind month on the Airfield. It was time to prep a couple of areas, see how the fish were behaving, and maybe carve out a session or two that could set me up for the rest of the summer.
I arrived at the Airfield Lake just before 1900 hours. The drive in along the east bank offered early signs of promise: several carp topping mid-water, rolling just beneath the ripple. And to my relief, no one was in the southwest corner swim—the exact spot I had in mind.
With four nights ahead of me, I had options. If it didn’t pan out in 48 hours, I could up sticks and try elsewhere, but I felt quietly confident. Everything about the air, the lake, the light… it just had that feeling.
Session Journal – Early July
With the heatwave finally taking a break and a couple of free nights in the diary, I found myself back on the bank in early July. Reports from the lake weren’t exactly encouraging—it had been fishing hard, and water levels were the lowest I’d seen in years. Still, it was all to play for.
Ian had arrived the day before and mentioned that the lake was very busy. I messaged another member to check if he was doing his usual one-nighter, hoping I might be able to slide into his swim once he’d packed up. Fortunately, he was, though the timing wasn’t ideal—I had to drop my youngest off at 4:00 a.m. for a school trip. The alternatives were trying to go back to sleep or sitting around at home, neither of which appealed in the slightest.
A Blowout, a Buzzer, and a Battle – A Session to Remember
With the weather nudging into the high twenties—26, maybe even 28 degrees—it was too hot for my liking. I knew sleep at home would be a restless affair, so the lake felt like the best escape. I wrapped up my last gardening job by 11, shot home to load the car, and just had one last task—drop the eldest off at her boyfriend's. From there, it was lake time.
By 12:30, I was finally on the road… and right into a dose of classic British road rage. According to the red-faced man in the Audi A4, I was somehow in the wrong for not letting him dive into my lane, after he’d undertaken me in a long queue of traffic without so much as an indicator. A bit of polite signalling might’ve helped rather than waving his fists at me through the window. Ah, well—onto better things.
I’ve been running a bit of a side plan lately: swing past Meadow Lake on the way to Airfield Lake, and if a decent swim is free, I drop in. This time, fortune looked to be smiling—my preferred shady spot was vacant. Perfect. Or so I thought.

It finally feels like we've turned a corner with the weather. Night time temperatures are now holding at 6-7 °C, with daytime reaching a comfortable 15-16 °C. The pressure is dropping nicely for a day or two—just about perfect conditions.
I wasn’t sure I’d even get a swim for this last full week of fishing. With so many anglers planning trips, I half-expected to end up on Airfield Lake—something I hoped to avoid until May.
Pulling into the main car park, I was relieved to see just two cars. Promising. In my head, I’d mapped out my top three swim choices, plus three backups, keeping myself focused on Meadow Lake. Swim No. 1 was already taken, along with a couple of my backups, so I pressed on, mindful of which swims had been occupied the night before.
With only two trips available for me to fish on Meadow Lake, I'm back at it. There's a good chance there will be a few more anglers this week than last. Apparently, it was very quiet here. I can only assume the weather played a part in that, keeping many away from the banks.
After an entertaining drive, trying to avoid a traffic jam, I arrived at the lake just before 9 am, only to find three other anglers fishing. I took a drive around the lake and chatted with them. First and foremost, there was no way I was setting up with the east wind blowing into my swim. I'm too old for that hardcore fishing anymore. Some might wonder why I even bothered going in such conditions, while others completely understand my reasoning.
After much toing and froing between about four swims, I eventually settled on one. I took some time leading around to confirm what I already knew from my numerous past sessions in this swim. Initially, I considered fishing long out of the swim, but I couldn't find anything worth putting a bait on. The best options were the closer-in spots, so that's what it was going to be. My left-hand rod would go to one of these closer features, while my right-hand rod would be positioned just about where I always prefer to have it—but slightly onto the gravel this time, as I like to fish just on the edge.
It was the kind of decision that required careful thought. After hours of analyzing weather forecasts, reading reports, and thinking about how Meadow Lake had been fishing over the weekend, I finally decided that it was the right time to head down to the club water for a few nights. Hopefully, I could bag a couple of decent fish during my stay. I had been itching to get back, and the timing felt right.
I arrived at the lake just after 08:30 hours, the morning sun barely peeking through the clouds. As I made my way down to the water's edge, I bumped into another member who was also booked on for the same few nights. We exchanged pleasantries and had a good chat. He had already dropped his bucket into one of the swims at the back of the wind—a sensible choice, considering the weather. He had spotted a carp already, though he mentioned that there were fish showing all over the lake. According to him, the back of the wind was looking like the most promising spot, and I had to admit, it made sense.
I'm back out on the Airfield Lake for the first time this session and I'm off to a good start.
I'm back out after spending a week at home on 3 x 500mgs of antibiotics each day! Hopefully, this has finally kicked into touch my never end bouts of illness, I'm not 100%, but I feel 80% better than I was on my last trip.
I checked in with Ian on Tuesday about the weather and where would be a favorable area. With the wind blowing from the Northerly direction and the lack of sunshine, which would, unfortunately, vanish after the first day. We came up with a fair few options, and with not much coming out over the past few days, it didn't look brilliant. The daylight hours are getting closer to 12 hours, I feel this is the magic moment for the carp, when they really start waking up and getting their heads down.
The wife and kids are in Ireland to visit family, so I have the opportunity for a few nights fishing. Unfortunately, the ever lasting cough has reared its ugly head again since my last trip out. My youngest was also starting to show signs of her having it before I headed off last week. I was hoping to avoid it, but alas, it’s back, I’m still planning to come this week. I’m hoping it’s on its way out and once I’m pitched up, I can just relax and rest. Plus the weather has turned a lot warmer and a lot more favorable over the coming days.
I was hoping to fish the same swim as before, but margin fishing when you are coughing like I am isn’t going to catch carp. I felt a bit sorry for the other anglers on the lake, as there were quite a few, 6 or 7 of us.
I was now looking for a swim that gave me a good 16 wrap out away from the coughing lunatic that I must be, coming out fishing.

With a real change in the weather conditions this could be the week they get on the munch, we will have to see.
Now that Meadow Lake and the river are open, Airfield Lake has become a ghost town. I’m planning a trip to Meadow Lake every month to stay connected with the place. When I get there in November, it’ll have been a bit of a headbanger in recent years. Airfield Lake used to close at the end of September, but now it’s October, which works well for here but not for Meadow Lake. I’m on the back foot before I even start, so this year I’m trying something different once the first week of the session is over.
I arrived at the gates of Airfield Lake around 13:30. After checking the weather, I had no idea where to go. One thing was certain: I needed shade for the next three nights, with temperatures reaching the mid 20Cs. That’s cold for some, but too hot for others, especially in direct sunlight.
I'm getting back into the rhythm again. I arrived around 12:45 and spent the next hours walking and driving around the complex. Three other people were fishing, all-day anglers, but only caught tench. The carp were clearly held up in some large weed beds, making fishing for them close to impossible and something I didn't fancy doing anyway. I'm not keen on bringing in a large bed of weed with a carp stuck in the middle - not my idea of fishing.
I really didn't know where to go this week. I fancied being in the teeth of the wind, but it was still going to be chilly. They love a good blow from the southwest here, and the northeast bank looked like my best option. I even thought of going back to the same swim as last week because they love the Bay Area.
After having a fabulous week camping at the best campsite in Wales, I'm back out after the carp. I had a good walk around, looking for any carpy signs at about 1400 hours when I arrived. This is probably the worst time to arrive here, as the carp are generally very inactive. I couldn't find a thing. I studied the weather forecast first thing this morning, thinking if I don't see anything, where will they most likely be? The winds were due to blow from the North West or West over these few days, which would give me a fair few options along the East Bank. The temperatures were going to be around 18C and cloudy, making these few days look like perfect fishing conditions, as long as the weather forecast is correct.
With my gardening jobs done for this week and the weather conditions completely different from last week's heatwave, I thought it best to head down to the lake early Tuesday evening, giving me three nights at my disposal, if I felt it was worth it. The forecast was pretty good, with low pressure and a southerly wind. There was still a lot of freshwater flowing in off the forest, especially after the recent 14 hours of heavy rain. The high today was 15C and will only rise to about 18C
I took the opportunity to swap things around with work this week. My wife is away in London from Friday morning, and I suddenly realized why I'm not working that day, which then meant I could fit two nights in, along with the warmer weather forecast. This would get the carp in the mood to spawn as soon as possible. It had to be better to get out sooner rather than later before the inevitable happens.

The wife is back from her trip away last week, and I wanted 3 nights before heading back out for a few nights. The family has kindly given me the option to fish 4 nights this week. Unfortunately, next week I'm limited to one night, as my wife and old school friend are off to London for the weekend, which is why I'm so fortunate to have a very understanding family.
The weather has finally made a change. It's now about 8 degrees warmer than last week, and the wind is unfortunately all over the place, but the pressure has dropped. I was really in two minds about where to go. The Airfield Lake was calling, as the carp undoubtedly will spawn in May as always; they are like clockwork.

With another day free, I was off to the lake for a few hours. The weather conditions weren't brilliant, plus it was Friday and the weekend boys would be about. I planned to keep away from those swims and try something different. When I was here the other day, the carp arrived from around the corner, so this time I've positioned myself around that corner. Admittedly, the closest I can get is about 4 rod lengths away as there's a bed of lily pads in between. However, they were moving up from this end and not the other one. They appear to like the wind, which is a shame as it's still from the north and very much in my face. Ian is due down with his new bait boat at some point. He has a couple of options on either side of me or along the field bank, plus there's still a swim available at the far end.

I arrived at about 08:45, to find out I was the third of the four anglers booked today. Two guys were along the bank where I fished on my last trip. They were fishing across to the lily pads, which ruled out that end, but the other half of the lily bank was free, giving me three swims that I really fancied giving a go. I don’t approach this quest with extreme seriousness. At my age, I savor the experience of fishing, relishing the connection with nature and the serenity it brings. I may not be doing myself any favours by not starting on my winter water until November. This lake is becoming progressively more challenging each year, and it’s apparent that a reevaluation of my approach for the next year is in order. Prep work is very important, it's not always about the next trip out on the bank, it can be for the upcoming weeks, months, or even years. You need to think ahead and plan what bait you will, e.g., boilies, particles, or any extra/replacement tackle you may need for the future. I don't generally buy much other than end tackle and bait these days, but I certainly keep myself up-to-date with new products, as you could easily miss out on something that would benefit your fishing.
I've written about not carrying too much kit when I'm fishing. I keep all my old and worn-out tackle bags and store all my stuff in these up in the loft. During the last Christmas school holidays, my youngest had friends over (teenagers they like you to keep away - it's too uncool to have a parent around), I was up there having a sort-out. I realized I may need to manage this area a bit better. I may be overstocked on a few items of end tackle, dating back to the 90's! I found a spool of Kryston Merlin, the old green spool, I'd not used it, but I do have a bad habit of if I like a product and it works well, buying a load of it, just in case they stop making it or alter it.

My friend, with his extensive experience, recommended two closely situated swims angled away from each other, affording ample room for three rods each. Identifying promising hard areas, I catapulted pouches of boilies onto each spot, supplementing with a bit of pellet over the margins rod. My choice of hook baits comprised Catalyst, Classic Corn, and Smokey Jack, all in 20mm wafters.
As we were talking, we were pleasantly surprised to observe a few carp breaking the surface, defying expectations despite the recent influx of cold water into the lake. This unexpected display heightened our confidence compared to our initial arrival.
An early morning vigil by the water revealed no signs of carp, but the awe-inspiring surroundings kept me captivated. Around 10 am, with the water flat and calm and the sun casting its warm glow, I reeled in to make necessary adjustments to my rods for the ensuing 24 hours. The unfamiliar terrain beckoned me for a leisurely walk about.
Taking advantage of this break, I fine-tuned the positioning of my baits, now content with their placement. The revised weather forecast favored our trip, with a brisk wind blowing into our bank. Coupled with the persistent rain, it held the promise of enticing carp to feed in our direction.

Optimistically, I hoped that the brunt of the heavy rain had subsided, leaving only a gentle drizzle carried by the wind. The rain was forecasted to cease around midday, while the wind was expected to persist throughout the day. My strategy was to give it a couple of hours post-rain, with a plan to start packing up around 15:00, ensuring ample time for a potential bite.

Unlike previous sessions, I felt completely lost when it came to choosing the right spot. No matter where I thought was perfect, it seemed to be the wrong choice. I ruled out going near the swim I used last week, despite the strong wind pushing in that direction. I didn't think I could bear sitting there again if I blanked on the first night. I also hesitated about the double gravel swim, even though it had produced many carp for me last September and October.

I've had a hard few days with 'the old black dog' and really had to dig deep to get here today. I knew it would be worth it. I did rush and came with no agenda, along with the thought I could always go home. I came straight to the Airfield Lake, not wishing to put any doubts in my mind as to where I wanted to fish - being the Airfield Lake.
I got to the lake around 9 a.m., headed through the gate, turned right to have a look at that side first, parked in Badger Island car park and set off onto the island.

After grappling with challenging gardening conditions over the past couple of days, Wednesday seemed poised to be utterly unfavorable for gardening but exceptionally promising for fishing. A massive weather front was on the horizon, with rain anticipated to arrive around 0930. My goal was to have everything set up and all the rods in position before the rain commenced.

The heatwave is in full swing, I was seriously considering not coming this week. I needed to gain a lot of information before winter and with the prospect of a trip to Suffolk, I needed to make a return to the Airfield Lake for at least 3 trips, before the end of the season. In reality, there's not a great deal of time available.
I came to the conclusion that it was worth taking a good look and only setting up if I could get into the shade. I needed to get there as early as possible to be able to get set up and avoid the heat of the day if I could find the perfect swim and be all set up by 9 am that would be perfect. I did the same as my last trip, by taking a drive around Meadow Lake on the way to the Airfield Lake and ended up pitching up there again. There were only 2-night angler's on, plus 2 day anglers, which turned out to be someone doing the night after the other day angler went home. I was sure another syndicate member who generally fishes Wednesday to Friday would be about. The fact that the Gap Swim was free and it simply took my fancy. My thought process is slowly drifting towards staying on here now. I've got the possibility of a trip to West Stow Lake in October with Rob again this year. After last year's disaster with the old Covid, it would be really nice to get back there this year.

My original plan was not to fish until the first weekend in September. The weather over the August Bank Holiday weekend was full of thunderstorms, etc., and not particularly good for days out. With a week of school holidays left to go, the family was happy to let me out for a couple of nights. It was worth a try, at least.

The weather this week was all over the place and affecting my gardening work. I decided that I would completely bin off Wednesday and move that job to the following week. I was affected both Monday and Tuesday by the rain and was home early on both days. I even considered going Tuesday afternoon and arriving before the real drop in pressure on Wednesday as well as a good storm. However, Ian was due down Thursday and this would be the last social trip until September as I'm away for a week and having days out the following week.

It's back to looking more like summer this week, the wind is from the North West and hopefully, keep that temperature down. The pressure is 1015 mbs and falling to 1007 on Sunday after I've gone home. My first choice of swim was the Double Gravel Swim and my second choice was the Daisy Field Swim. The way the wind is blowing, it will swing to the southwest at some point Thursday, and then again on Saturday - there is some rain around as well possibly.

I was struggling to get myself motivated to go fishing this week, but once I had seen the weather forecast, it was clear I needed to put it on the bank.
I was able to move a few jobs about and work a bit longer on Monday and Tuesday, it was enough to be down the lake, by mid-afternoon on Tuesday. I'm unable to fish Thursday night, as the wife has a company function and I was now very keen to do two nights with these weather conditions. I could've done Wednesday and Friday, but I really wanted to do consecutive nights.

The wife has returned from her adventures and there’s a break in the horrendous weather conditions. I’ve popped out for a night before the next weather front moves in tomorrow morning with heavy rain. It certainly goes to show you that all lakes fish differently from each other or it is just my luck! However, I’ve never caught in heavy rainy conditions and I generally don’t bother with wet weather gear.
I arrived around noon and turned left, I headed for the main car park, there were only 2 cars in the car park. Unfortunately, the owners were occupying the only two swims I fancied along that point. I got back in the car and headed off to the opposite side of the lake.

I arrived down the lake this afternoon, and unless someone was on the south part of the complex (that I can't see), I'm the only one here. The wind was swinging around in all directions, and that certainly wasn't going to help. The temperature was going to be ok, with the exception of tomorrow but I could deal with it for one day - I hope.

I was interested in one of the four swims going out into the Big Lake. The first one had a day angler pitched up in, I wandered down to the third swim, which took my fancy. I then headed off down to the end swim, I didn't really fancy that swim, as it was due to be extremely hot for the coming days and that swim is very exposed. My swim choice was around shade again. However, I had packed my Fox Camo Tarpaulin and could use that. It was very useful when we were camping in Wales the other week and I didn't fancy losing any more carp and wearing waders is getting a bit much in this heat.

The carp were pretty much everywhere I looked since I arrived, a couple were looking a bit like they were building up to spawning. Let's hope the pressure rise and cloudy wet weather hold them back until Sunday afternoon. This is all we can hope for.
Ian arrived just after 10 a.m., and we had a look about, we discussed our options, and as my leg was still playing up, he kindly offered to fish further away from the car park. This would make my life/walking a lot easier.

Ian arrived on Friday afternoon and it was a Bank Holiday weekend: time was limited, the weather was finally getting warmer plus pre-spawning captures which meant the lake was pretty packed with 15 to 18 anglers on 64 acres. You may laugh, but that’s packed for here.
Ian had managed a low 28lber on his first night.

With a dentist appointment at 4 pm, I couldn’t get down the lake until about 6 pm but this gave me plenty of time to find a swim and get things sorted before dark.

I was lucky enough to be able to go Wednesday again this week, but that’s the last Wednesday until Wintertime. I’m certainly not going to wish my life away and certainly not wish for the winter months. I wasn’t up as early as I had planned, but I didn’t set the alarm clock, as I wasn’t really in that much of a rush. As it turned out, it was raining, plus I missed a swim I was interested in, you know the saying – snooze, you lose! I certainly did snooze, and I will never know what would of happen if I’d gone in that swim.

Firstly, I must thank my wife and kids for letting me out during the last few days of their Easter holidays. It’s week fifteen of the year and I’ve just only starting trip 10. I try to average 1 trip a week but this year hasn’t gotten off to a great start. We still have 37 weeks to go, so I better not write this year off just yet!
After my last trip, which really proved the carp really aren’t feeding heavily in open water yet. It was time to find an area where I felt the carp wouldn’t be too far away from me. I’m not into snag fishing these days, I’m too old for that.
After going backward and forwards from a number of swims, I settled for the Gate Swim.

It's that time of the year again, and I'm back on the Airfield Lake. It's been open for two weeks, but as it fishes hard, the carp have fed on naturals all winter. I stuck with Meadow Lake for a couple more trips - the 40mph plus winds help me decide as well. It's very open here, you are very exposed to the elements.

I headed off, at about 07.30 hours this morning, to the Airfield Lake and spent an hour looking about. I even set up my bivvy in one of the swims, but it just didn’t feel right to me. It wasn’t looking carpy at all.
With the bivvy down and back in the car, I was soon at Meadow Lake. It’s no more than a couple of miles away by road. I was shocked to find myself only the second person there. This did cheer me up. I’d originally planned on arriving Wednesdays over the winter period, as there isn’t a great deal of gardening to be done. I think this is only the second time I’ve managed it.
I received some information from a fellow member on Monday morning about his success in one particular swim. It was the perfect spot to avoid all the strong winds forecast, plus be in with a shot of a carp.
I quickly got a load of bait out there. It was a mixture of flaked maize, 11mm Catalyst/Classic Corn Pellets, and 12mm Catalyst boilies with a good load of Hemp oil and Betafin.

It was absolutely stuffed full, including 4 old TV sets! It’s amazing really how much rubbish you accumulated over the years. I also feel a few bits of fishing tackle going on ebay soon.
I was hoping to enlist one of my free Wednesdays to go fishing, but the teacher’s strike put pay to that again. The local crazy golf course and tea rooms were happy, though!
On to this week’s trip, I arrived at the lake just before 9 am. I wasn’t really sure if I was going to carry on to the Airfield Lake, which had opened the other day, or stay here. After finding out that a few carp had been out and the conditions for the Airfield Lake aren’t that favorable. Despite the 7 other anglers on, I felt it was worth a go, plus one of my favorite swims was free.

I'm back out after spending a week at home on 3 x 500mgs of antibiotics each day! Hopefully, this has finally kicked into touch my never end bouts of illness, I'm not 100%, but I feel 80% better than I was on my last trip.
I checked in with Ian on Tuesday about the weather and where would be a favorable area. With the wind blowing from the Northerly direction and the lack of sunshine, which would, unfortunately, vanish after the first day. We came up with a fair few options, and with not much coming out over the past few days, it didn't look brilliant. The daylight hours are getting closer to 12 hours, I feel this is the magic moment for the carp, when they really start waking up and getting their heads down.

The wife and kids are in Ireland to visit family, so I have the opportunity for a few nights fishing. Unfortunately, the ever lasting cough has reared its ugly head again since my last trip out. My youngest was also starting to show signs of her having it before I headed off last week. I was hoping to avoid it, but alas, it’s back, I’m still planning to come this week. I’m hoping it’s on its way out and once I’m pitched up, I can just relax and rest. Plus the weather has turned a lot warmer and a lot more favorable over the coming days.
I was hoping to fish the same swim as before, but margin fishing when you are coughing like I am isn’t going to catch carp. I felt a bit sorry for the other anglers on the lake, as there were quite a few, 6 or 7 of us.
I was now looking for a swim that gave me a good 16 wrap out away from the coughing lunatic that I must be, coming out fishing.

I’m back down the lake a lot earlier than I had planned, my normal Tuesday job was cancelled, so it was an opportunity to get back down the lake. The conditions were not all that favorable, with a drop in the air pressure for a day or two, it’s not much of a drop, mind you, but it could make all the difference. There’s a change in the wind direction, blowing from various easterly points. With no option to fish at the weekend and the longer sunny days, it is worth a try.

Only to find that I was only really left with one option for a swim unless I fancy setting up and moving the next morning or going home and coming back again. After last week’s heavy rain, the Avon Valley is in full flood. With so much going in the lake, it’s going to be another hard few nights of fishing. Along with the fact that the night temperatures dropped to -5c and all the standing water froze and made driving conditions horrendous for the past 4 days. I struggled to get to the lake, avoiding flooded roads and closures, along with road works for burst pipes.

I checked in with Ian on Tuesday about the weather and where would be a favorable area. With the wind blowing from the Northerly direction and the lack of sunshine, which would, unfortunately, vanish after the first day. We came up with a fair few options, and with not much coming out over the past few days, it didn’t look brilliant. The daylight hours are getting closer to 12 hours, I feel this is the magic moment for the carp, when they really start waking up and getting their heads down.

Finally, back out on the bank, I’m still not 100%, and a day later than planned! I just need to blow those cobwebs away (as my granny would say) and shake off this thing that’s been going around once and for all.
I’ve had a minefield of problems with my health, since catching covid for the first time, last October, along with my youngest daughter. We just can’t completely get rid of it and that’s the reason I was a day late, she was not very well again this week, resulting in Thursday off school.
But I was determined to get on the bank this week. My first trip of the year was originally planned for the 1st of January, hey, I’m only thirteen days late. The end of last year was much the same with only 2 trips in November and December. It’s been quite hard and very depressing at times as I’m generally out 2 or 3 nights a week, so being stuck inside isn’t a great place to be.

Things were certainly all coming together as they sometimes do with fishing, the momentum just keeps building. We both couldn’t make the second to last weekend, due to family stuff and weren’t sure if both of us could make the last weekend at the end of October. So, we just treated each trip as our last one.
I wasn’t due to arrive until Friday morning, but with the carp coming out mostly at night, it was worth setting up in the dark on Thursday evening. I couldn’t arrive any earlier due to family stuff going on this afternoon.
Ian had called earlier this morning and take the choice of the swim and after last week’s success, we felt it was worth another go in that area.

The wife and kids are in Ireland to visit family, so I have the opportunity for a few nights fishing. Unfortunately, the ever lasting cough has reared its ugly head again since my last trip out. My youngest was also starting to show signs of her having it before I headed off last week. I was hoping to avoid it, but alas, it’s back, I’m still planning to come this week. I’m hoping it’s on its way out and once I’m pitched up, I can just relax and rest. Plus the weather has turned a lot warmer and a lot more favorable over the coming days.

I didn’t ever think I was getting out again this year. What with covid, a sick child, who gave the illness to me (which is still hanging around), and now an extremely cold snap. It was now or never as the Christmas holidays are just around the corner.
I’d planned a social with a few syndicate members, however, a couple were not as crazy as me and Steve. I just had to get out as I think I would have got cable fever sooner or later. We did spend a few hours muller it over on Monday, Steve took a trip to the lake on Tuesday – we were very worried that the lake would have a lid on it. Which it didn’t.
We arranged to meet up at 11 am Wednesday morning. I arrived about 1040 and took a good look about and spotted not a single sign. It had been minus temperature overnight and only a couple of degrees in the day. You can’t blame the fish really.
We spent over an hour walking, talking, and weighing up the options. We were the only ones about, funny that! Finally, we settled on a bay at the back of the wind that was in direct sunshine, if it came out, which it was due to over the next couple of days. We flipped a coin, I got the right, and Steve got the left.

I’m getting back into the swing of things again. A few motivational issues this week, and lots going on in my head as well.
As there’s a heavy band of rain pushing by today, and you are never really sure when it will arrive these days, the weatherman isn’t that accurate anymore. I was up early and down the lake by 8am. I already knew how many were here fishing last night, so it was going to be down to how many day anglers or really keen night anglers – like myself, as to where I pitch up.

I’ve finally made it back down the lake, certainly a few weeks later than I hoped for. I completely missed the end of the session on Airfield Lake. All thanks to the dreaded Covid.
Covid, put me out of action for a good few weeks, mucking up my plans for the build-up to my winter campaign on Meadow Lake.
It’s now Thursday the 17th November and with a minor issue with having to collect a sick child from school. I did make it down the lake in time to set up and get the rods out before dark. I’d originally arranged to meet a fellow syndicate member down the lake at 1100 am. This turned into him giving me a call and discussing the swim options. We really wanted to have a social, so the simplest solution to my late arrival was doubling up.

This session, I’m in Suffolk fishing at West Stow County park, it’s a social with my oldest friend Mr Rob Nunn. It’s been a year since our last trip, around the same time it is half term week. The drive up was pretty shocking due to the bad weather – heavy rain, and thunderstorms all the way.
I left home earlier than I had planned, as I was woken up by the thunderstorm. This did help in a way, I set off earlier than planned, which would help me. I was going to have to be driving through yet more heavy rain, along with the possibility of the need to take an alternative route if needed. This was the case in the end.

With the end of the Airfield Lake season and our baiting campaign, we were well pleased to get back into the double gravel swim. We had a long discussion about our other options last week and spoke about it yesterday.

Yesterday, I managed to do the only job of today that I was due to do, which in turn meant I was able to get down the lake for a few hours today on my local club lake. Make hay when the sunshines they say!
There were just 3 cars in the car park when I arrived at about 9am. I wasn’t in a rush, I like to let the day anglers set up first, which then gives me the choice of where to fish and position myself away from them as much as possible.

I wasn’t working today and next week I can’t get down the lake until Friday morning. So I was up and down the lake by first light and looking about. However, the wind is picking up to gusts of around 50mph, so I was mindful of the wind direction. To complicate matters, the wind was swinging around a lot over the next 48hrs. The water levels are still very low, so the swim option was still quite limited.

After the success of my last trip, I was hoping to get back to that area. As the lake had been pretty quiet over the last few months, I was feeling very hopeful, until I had a phone call from Ian saying there were two people set up along the area we were heading for. At this point, I’d finished my gardening job and was just pulling up to the gate.
I met Ian in the car park and went for a walkabout. There was no point in looking on our normal island swims as the water levels were too low unless we fancied splitting up around the complex. I spend a lot of the winter by myself, it’s quite nice to be sociable these days.
We wandered down to the Bottom Lake car park and much to our surprise it was empty. We continued on and had a look around some swims and decided on one of the points and the first lawn swim. I’d not fished this part of the venue since before the first lockdown in 2020, late March I think, when I had a lovely 26lber

I’m out on the club lake again this week, the weather has been playing havoc with my gardening work, but we do need this rain. A few days’ break from it at the right time would certainly help!
Not wishing to waste another day at home, like yesterday, I organized my day kit again and headed to the School Lake. This time, hoping for a change in fortune from my last trip here, the conditions are so much better and this gives me great confidence today.

With a few hours spare after gardening today, it had been some time since I thought I would take a drive and look at the School Lake. It’s Monday and generally, the lake is empty, so I put the gear on the car. When I arrived to my surprise, there were 4 cars in the car park, I decided to take a lap of the lake. The day was heating up and the carp were on the top in various areas. I still had yet to sort my floater kit out, which is a bit bad considering the summer we have had.

The beauty of running my own part-time gardening company is that when the weather is rubbish for gardening, it happens to be brilliant for fishing.
The weather has finally broken and we are having a week off Heavy rain showers and Thunderstorms after getting wet the past two days and the rest of the week looking rubbish for gardening, I was off down the lake for 4 nights, thanks to the understanding family I have.
The weather forecast for this morning was heavy shattered showers, I was up by 6 am, but it took until 8 am to get all the kit in the car, it's like a monsoon session, I had worked out that if I arrived just after 9 am there would be a gap in the rain over the lake.
I had discussed with Ian yesterday afternoon about the weather conditions and the lack of water in the lake at the moment, due to the hot summer, I'd not seen this low in years.

With a change in the weather and a chance to get out for one last go before we head away on our family holiday.
I was really in two minds about where to go after last week's success, but that was all about avoiding that extreme heat and having a social, this time it's about catching on a quick overnighter.
I headed for Airfield lake, after checking on the weather I wasn't really sure where I fancied as it had been fishing hard recently also similar to meadow lake, but I feel more at home here and I'm still convinced that the bigger fish are in this water, unfortunately slightly more problematic to catch.

I had the opportunity to come down on Wednesday late afternoon this week. I wasn’t really sure about fishing this week, however, a few fish had been coming out, and this gave me a bit of confidence. I was keen to get in the Daisy swim, which is to the left of Badger island, Ian and I have been watching fish for the past week in a particular area.

I’m out on the syndicate for a social few nights with Ian, who I’ve not seen since before my camping holiday in late May.
We meet at the gate, just before 1030 am, and had a look about in a few swims. A couple were occupied, so we settled for Badger Island. I set up in the Jungle Swim and Ian set up in the one I was in last week.

At the beginning of this week, I was wondering if I would actually get out fishing with the temperatures forecast to 26 degrees. But as luck would have it, my wife ended up working from home Wednesday/ Thursday. The weather change was now due Thursday, it was a perfect opportunity to get down the lake again.
I arrived at about 1230 to find that it was completely empty and I could pick any swim I liked. I checked the weather again, thunderstorms were due Thursday afternoon till Friday am. The wind was due to swing back from the North West to South Westlys again and the pressure was due to be dropping over the next few days.

I’m so lucky to have such an understanding wife and family. The change in weather conditions happened earlier than expected, I was very keen to get down the lake. We’d already agreed I could do Sunday night, but I was keen to do Saturday night as well, the conditions had changed dramatically since yesterday, 29 degrees no wind to 24 degrees and strong North East wind, rain and going down to 18 degrees tomorrow, with a pressure 1014mbs, I must be in with a chance of a few bites.
With a few hours to spare, I was off down the School Lake, only to find it was closed due to spawning. I’d been waiting for this to happen at some point. I had a couple of options that were close by, but with only smaller carp, and only 3 hours’ worth of fishing time – I was soon out of the car park. I had passed one lake on the way here with two cars in it, but it was worth checking the other lake, which was a bigger lake. The downside of this was that they only had small carp in it – up to 15lbers (if I was incredibly lucky).

It had been nearly a month since I'd seen Ian, plus it is the first May Bank Holiday weekend and you never know how many people will turn up. So, after a long discussion about the weather, the possibility of the carp spawning, and information gleaned from other syndicate members. The first port of call was going to be the Daisy Field Swim and would take it from there. I arrived just after 8 am and took a drive and walkabout. I then headed over to that swim, there wasn't a great deal showing, in fact, I spotted no carp. I was not really sure what to do other than follow our gut.

I've not much choice in the swim, my best option is the first swim I started yesterday. I very nearly went to another lake close by.
But after walking halfway around the lake, this swim was worth a couple of hours in - soaking up the sunshine.
I'd sorted a few things out over this two-week break. One of them was my ridge monkey bucket and seat, kit for one rod this was for a few hours fishing after my gardening work where possible. As kept it in the car, it made it more readily available and gave me that extra push you need sometimes after a hard few hours of gardening.

With the Easter holidays starting on Friday, I'm out for a few nights before I spend the next two weeks with the family. My dad is due down on Sunday, which will be nice all around for everyone, and hopefully, we will get a chance to go out for a few days as long as the weather holds out.
I never grow tired of this place with its incredible views.
I arrived before Ian this week, we discussed some options in the week after looking at the forecast and had decided that we really need to be behind that cold northerly wind. Thursday was going to be the windy one and it would drop off over the next 24 hours. The pressure was rising, however, there was more sunshine forecast than earlier in the week. We need the sunshine out to keep the water temperature up and fingers crossed, the carp may feed.
I was considering not bothering this week, however with the school Easter Holidays ever closer and my dad is visiting for two weeks. We are looking forward to seeing him as we last saw him last August when we holiday on the Norfolk Broads. It only gave me two weekends to fish.

This will be my last few nights on Meadow Lake, and I am very nearly headed down to Airfield Lake, but as Ian pointed out on the phone this morning, discussing our options, this will be the last chance for a monster or two before the battle with the 15lbers to capture an Airfield 30, as the ratio is much better here. I'm very lucky to be out this week at all as the three other members of the family are ill, one with covid for the second time, which is my youngest and the earliest she can go back to school is Monday and I thought I was stuck home until Friday afternoon until the MD of her company told her to go home and work from there, as she is pretty ruff, but is old school and goes to work unless is she can't finical get there. My eldest has a raging cold and is still going to school.
I arrived at 8 am as I was up early and half expecting to have to head over to the Airfield lake, but the meadow was completely empty and after spotting a couple of carp show in the Gap swim and Stumps, I call Ian for a chat and the choices where made, as long as no one fancies Ian chose before he gets here, I'm not one for reserving swims for hours, maybe the odd 30 minutes if I know he is around the corner stocking up on supplier e.g my pasty that he kindly brings down every Thursday with him, all hot from the shop's oven.

I really didn't think I would make it here again as we had so much rain over the past 3 days, the gardens would all be pretty boggy, and I would end up making more of a mess.
I arrived at about eight forty-five at an empty car park. I got the barrow out of the car and slowly started to walk along the bank, checking for signs of carp. There was nothing about it, and I opted to start where I had fished last Monday, and then once the carp gave their locations away, I would move.

I'm out on the syndicate for a couple of nights again this week. I'm doubling up with Ian this week. As I've purchased a Weber portable gas BBQ, and we are going to test it out.
We went really sure about the swim choice after last week's trip when I caught it and he didn't and really honestly based the swim choice around the weather and the ease of packing up in the rain Sunday, I've always maintained that when you don't really nowhere to go and the carp are playing hardball. Go for comfort, as that will bring happiness and then confidence, and even in the hardest of swim, you can catch when confidence levels are high.
The wind was from the South East the majority of the time; the pressure was due to slow drop, and with a mixture of Sunshine and rain, it was looking good for the coming few days.
I arrived just before 9 am and had a look at the swims we fancied and gave Ian a call to discuss the options.
I'm on the school lake for what may be my last trip on here this winter, as the gardening will be kicking in more, and I will then focus solely on my syndicate water as normal.
I arrived just before 9 am as always, there was only one other car in the car park, which is a good sign and he was fishing just a couple of swims away from his car.
treesWith the wind due to blow from the east and after finding the tree which had fallen down the last time, was still sitting in front of the swim where I normally cast across to - that wasn't great news. However, with the complete lack of bushes, well anything really! I walked up a couple of swims and pitched up, so I was able to drop my bait onto the spot as near as I dare go to the tree and then walk back threading my way around the trees.

Another week has gone by and it's syndicate time again. I was planning on fishing a different swim, unfortunately, it was occupied - these things happen. I'm doing a social with Ian for a few nights and this is a swim he particularly fancied. I was going to set up right or left of him, it turned out to be right and the same swim as last week. I did nearly fish a different swim, but that would have been a bit unfair as this is Ian's first few nights out since the bivvy disaster last October on the Airfield Lake.

Sense and worry about the house sent me home for a night - the battering from storms Franklyn or Gladys (I lost track of which one was which), was pretty much continuous, and I've now come back down in the last few hours of Franklin for a couple of nights.
I arrived down just after 8 in the morning, it was very blowy and it would be until around 1 this afternoon. I hoped to get back to the swim I was in before. I'd been baiting here on and off when I could over the past month, knowing that I was planning a long session and the carp do love this area. The long-range forecast, in conjunction with watching the jet stream, was looking perfect, however, I didn't release how bad it would get and that the winds would predominantly come from the west.
When I arrived, I had a quick look about, but with the way the wind was blowing and due to be blowing over the next few days, the same swim was the obvious choice. I'd taken a drive around the lake before committing myself. I doubt I would've been able to get the bivvy up in a high proportion of them. I had to pitch my bivvy up around the corner a bit from the swim, out of a direct blast of the wind.

fter Storm Eunice passed, I decided to head off down the lake for a few nights; however, there are still another two storms due – Storm Franklin and Storm Gladys.
It’s certainly going to be fun, and I do hope that the carp get stirred up by these winds, they generally love these conditions. Once the heavy rain passes today, it’s pretty much all about the wind, you will notice from my weather screenshots, it’s pretty cold out, and it will be hard going for me. The pressure was amazingly low yesterday, it will dip up and down over this week, going as high as 1028 MBs. It’s a mixed bag of conditions really and very hard to judge the bait situation; it’s always best to start small and build it up over the coming days, depending on my results

With another opportunity to get out on the School Lake, I was soon set up in the same swim as before. It just made sense to do this. I have the ability to put all three rods on spots where I would originally need to move to a couple of different swims. This was clearly the way forward – now the trees have gone.

The weather was spot on for the School Lake today. Unfortunately, the other club water which had good carp in it was closed for maintenance and therefore there’s a good chance of the School Lake being busier than normal. I may have to change my plan of approach, depending on the number of people fishing. When I arrived, there were 3 other cars in the car park, however, they were fishing as a group and had set up next to each other. I had worked out the perfect swim to fish, especially as the trees had mostly gone. This gave you the opportunity to walk along the bank more, place baits, and the ability to cast to different spots from other swims that you normally couldn’t.
I'm on the bank again on my syndicate water for a couple of nights. Unfortunately, my days have coincided with another cold snap in the weather. The pressure is on the up, frustratingly looking a lot better on Sunday/Monday again.
I arrived down just before 9 a.m, to find a single-day angler in one of the day only swims. I took a drive and a walk about and spotted zero signs of carp. As I didn't fancy anywhere really, I was slightly undecided, until the sun came to out and then one area look particularly carpy. It was the swim I'd spent a couple of winters back when the lake was flooded. I'd been trying to keep away from that swim, but something was appealing about it this trip. So, I dropped a bucket in the swim and had a bit more of a walkabout, but that feeling of these fish are going to switch on soon and I need to be here when they do. This is definitely the swim to be in.
With a few hour's free today, I quickly sorted out my kit and headed down the club lake. On a lovely sunny day, it's looking perfect and with any luck, these carp would be on the move a bit more.
There were two other cars in the car park, one guy was fishing down the car park end and the other in the middle part of the lake. It looked like I would be starting down the island end and then moving on at around 1130 am for the last couple of hours. I do like this spot, it gives you an amazing view of the lake and a good chance to spot showing carp. I spotted a carp stick its head out, way along the margins to my left, I just had to move. It was where I'd scattered a bit of bait out when I arrived and took a walkabout.
I'm back out on my syndicate water for a couple of nights. The weather is certainly looking a lot better, I'm very hopeful that there's a good chance of a carp this session. It has been a lot harder this year, mind you, I was restricted by covid restrictions last year, and if I remember correctly I was only doing days locally and then straight onto the Airfield Lake.
I did have other plans, which unfortunately didn't pan out. I will write about it sometime in the future - when I feel like bringing it up again. All I will say at the moment, it was a big kick in the teeth for all involved.

After 7 days of looking after my eldest daughter, she caught covid 19 (no doubt from school). I knew at some point, it would grace our house again. She was pretty lucky with the symptoms and only had a high temperature one day with not much coughing. It was the lack of taste that really got her, everything tasted of cardboard or very salty. But we are all free of it, she has tested negative for a couple of days and can go to school tomorrow. This gives me the opportunity to get down the lake in daylight hours on Thursday evening, not sure if I would have had the motivation to set up in the dark, the lake fishing particularly hard this January.
I arrived about 1230 in the afternoon and was a bit surprised to only find one other day angler fishing. I popped in for a chat, and he hadn't seen anything. I took a drive around the lake and a walkabout, looking for signs of anything and not a glimpse of a carp.
With no work this week and the wife is still working from home, this is an opportunity not to be missed. The weather is going to be about the same as last week - not brilliant. There's a small drop in the pressure over the next 48 hours, which hopefully may help.
When I arrived just before 9 a.m., the lake was covered in a thick blanket of fog, which is absolutely a non-starter for spotting carp, and there was still frost on the ground as well. After last week's trip, I'd put a bit of thought into where it may be best to head for and know where the carp had been hanging out. I felt that I was unable to fish the range I needed to without having to purchase a braided mainline. I'm still not 100 % convinced that braid is the way forward, or is it that I'm just old school?
School Lake time comes around sooner than expected, it's a bit fresh and frosty today. There is some tree work going on down the other end.
It's the island for me to start with today. I've chucked out a bit of pellet around the island and then in a few swims down to my right, this is so I can keep an eye out for any carpy signs.
I am taking full advantage of my wife working from home until the government updates the rules and she has to work in the office again. I arrived down the lake, my golden rule is to sort out a swim and then talk to the other anglers on the lake if I feel the need for extra information. This time, I stopped for a chat with a couple of anglers before heading along to my more favoured swim, which they also both suggested. I missed out on it by about a minute, but is the reality of fishing sometimes and may be the lake was pushing me back to this swim again?
With fewer gardening jobs at this time of the year, I'm out on the club lake today in the hope of my first carp of 2022.
Conditions are certainly better than last week, until the middle of the week and there's another change in the weather due.
I arrived just before 9 am to find that I was the only person here. I stood on the path and looked directly up the lake for some time, I was hoping for a sign. I then had a look in a few swims the car park side, in the end I opted for the other bank; before the island and in the wider part of the lake. This was an area I had caught from before. I still haven't seen anything yet, however, this area is a good starting point.
With the festivities over and done with for another year, the kids are back at school, I'm out for my first trip of 2022. I was down the lake early on Thursday morning, I was hoping to arrive Wednesday afternoon, but my car wasn't ready. It had to go into the garage for a service and mot. I can do three nights but I don't think it's worth the effort with the weather conditions as they are. The weather is going to be all over the place. When I arrived it was -3C, by this afternoon there will be 30 mph winds and heavy rain followed by minus temperatures, it's going to be exactly the same again tomorrow. Not ideal.
