During a 1990 Christmas tour break, in a New South Wales home studio with his band, and a phone number from Michael Gudinski, Jimmy Barnes created some of his best work.
Rock singers have long been inspired by soul singers.
In this case, the rock singer became the soul singer.
The song, released over 30 years ago, is a personal high for Jimmy Barnes.
There’s a re-release of the album celebrating 30 years, out now.

Hannah Crofts has already had an extensive music career, notably with the four piece band All Our Exes Live In Texas.
But it’s a song off her debut album under the name Baby Velvet that’s been chosen as some of her best.
The song’s not new. It’s been on the Exes set list for years, starting with a gig at South By South West, pre-pandemic.

Glenn Wheatley was a legendary Australian talent manager, promoter and musician himself in The Masters Apprentices.
Known for his reach across both music and media, he steered both John Farnham and Delta Goodrem to the top of Australian music.
In February 2022 he died from health complications caused by Covid.
Now his son, Tim Wheatley, has released a version of The Masters Apprentice’s hit, Because I Love You.
The cover has also been included with the new audio book of Glenn’s autobiography, Paper Paradise, read by Glenn himself.
Like Glenn, Tim has moved between Melbourne, London and Los Angeles, focused on music all the way.
As you’ll hear, the song has become more than a hit to the Wheatley’s, it’s very much in and of the family now.

Wagons had be building a cult-like following throughout Melbourne pub live music scene in the 2000s.
Atop this wave of local fandom came some of his best work, Goodtown, released in 2009.
From there the Glen Waverly kid and his band were invited to play the Big Day Out - a rare booking for a country music outfit.
Goodtown is from Wagons' fifth album, The Rise and Fall of Goodtown.

A touching story of passing time during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns in New Zealand.
Actor and comedian Chris Parker was sent out for supplies and returned with a felting kit.
Documenting the process on Instagram became hugely popular.
But when he'd felted his way through the animals on the instructions, collective enthusiasm pushed him to seek inspiration from the pandemic.
Chris' final creation is on display at the Auckland Museum and a photo of him wearing it is at Te Papa, the Museum of New Zealand.

It began on the couch, in front of Q&A on ABCTV, with Lawrence impersonating Malcolm Turnbull, casually berating the other panelists.
On the suggestion of his wife, Lawrence began including the impersonations of Sydney's eastern suburbs Member of Parliament in his stand up shows.
Minister Turnbull, soon became Prime Minister Turnbull and knowledge of his pronunciation was even more widely known.
So grew the impersonation that is now fondly thought of by Lawrence as some of his best work.

Geelong in the late 1980s and early 1990s was a hotbed for musical creativity.
Right in the mix was Darren Smallman and Warped, a band he joined as the bass player.
International punk rock acts filtered through Victoria's second city, through the rough bars and among the car factories.
Darren was 15 when he wrote "Dog Killer", some of his best work.
These days he goes by the moniker Dez Dare, based in the UK.

A single tragic event among many in northern New South Wales lead to the inspiration for Roger's chosen song, Token Angels.
Wendy Matthews knew Roger from his time in Models, and was working on a solo studio album when she came across the song.
It was released in 1990, winning an ARIA award the following year for Breakthrough Artist - Single.

‘What’s My Scene’ represented the frustration of figuring out your place in the world among everyone else.
Dave says when you were in the 80s you thought it was a dull time, but it was the decade his band formed and looking back he witnessed an outburst of creativity in Sydney.
On album number three, the Hoodoo Gurus had a song and sound that would tell everyone they were going from strength to strength.
But in reality their success was, as Dave describes, just papering over the band's gathering issues.
In March 2022 they’re releasing a new album, Chariot of the Gods, along with a 40th anniversary Australian tour.

Go is from Public Service Broadcasting's 2015 album The Race For Space, launched at the UK’s National Space Centre in Leicester.
It features samples from communications from NASA’s Mission Control supporting the Apollo 11 crew (first manned mission to the moon), executing one procedure after another, inching their way over hundreds of thousands of kilometers to the Moon.
The song creates a tense progression with the rhythmic instrumentation and the clinical, historic voices.

As of 2021 Tim Rogers is the new lead singer of the band.
They’ve recently released an album - I'm Sorry Sir, That Riff's Been Taken.
It’s out now wherever you get your music.
Pete took the band from Punchbowl New South Wales around the world and back again from the 1980s to today.
The work he’s chosen is Just Being With You, written by Blackie and released in 1989.

As Emma explains, The Putbacks have a habit of using in jokes to title their demo songs. But this one simply stuck.
As a single mother managing two young children and her career she found herself at a crossroads – would she move back to her family in New South Wales or stick it out in Melbourne pursuing her love of music.
Thankfully she’s chosen Melbourne and word is we can expect at least a few more studio albums from her in the coming years - as soon 2022 we’re told.
Emma’s choice for this episode is steeped in family – inspired by older and younger generations.

Geronimo is a massive song, not just for the band.
It charted around the world, particularly in Europe.
The band came together as a duo – George with sister Amy, who features in a future episode.
They were joined by another sibling Emma and other friends to become Sheppard.
It was at the end of an Australian east coast tour playing back to back concerts at schools that the gem for Geronimo was captured on an iphone, minutes before going on stage in Melbourne.

Deena Lynch, AKA Jaguar Jonze has chosen her song Astronaut.
Astronaut began as a poem and an expression of her feelings of anxiety, secretly released as a B-side track.
It became a song after four years, some work on the lyrics and four attempts at getting musical arrangement right.
In 2021 Jaguar Jonze is nominated for a Do Good Award, one of the J Awards and will be back at SBS’ Eurovision Australia Decides.

Released in 1996 when Australia was in its own punk rock revolution – this was the era when music festivals were packed, where a recognizable counterculture sound had hit the mainstream and CD sales had yet to peak.
College radio was huge in the USA, underground stations in Melbourne like RRR and PBS were pivotal in bringing the sound from this scene to the loyal fans that craved every fuzzed out hook every night at a live music venue around the country.
Buy Me A Pony was also the first Australian song to be voted number 1. Every. And it made it in the 1996 Triple J hottest 100, beating Stinkfist by Tool in second place and Underground by Ben Folds Five in third.
Funnily enough, inspiration for the melody came from old 1980s Australian commercial. And if you’ve got an ear for time signatures, Kram gets into the song’s musical complexity during this interview.

"It was a cool turning point for us to learn how to sort of pull apart a song and develop it in that kind of way" said Shane Parsons, DZ Deathrays, about Night Slave and writing the album Black Rat.
"Which is maybe a bit more of a sort of dance music or pop music sort of thing, rather than just getting in a room and thrashing it out."
Night Slave is the final song on their ARIA award winning album Black Rat, released in 2014.

Inspiration struck Shane Nicholson in 2013. Recently divorced and after his first first date in many years the concept of Secondhand Man came about.
"I've never been good at talking about my feelings in the real world. I just do it through songs, that's always been the way I've done it. If I was maybe I wouldn't have been divorced!"
It travelled with him to Alice Springs where he spent time roaming remote parts with a pad and pen, writing songs that would become "Hell Breaks Loose", his ARIA award winning seventh studio album.
"I feel like that is a whole separate chapter of my career to everything that came before it... I fell like that (secondhand man) was the start of me getting really good at what I do."

Abby had Give Me Love written in 2014, but it wasn't until 4 years later that she began to record it in Nashville Tennessee.
The words came first, which is always a good sign in her process. Then, with her nephews and Paul Mac, she managed to complete it to a point that it's become some of her best work.

Some of her best work is the song Trust is Rust, from her second solo studio album All Day Venus released in 2013.
"Trust is Rust is the benchmark for me. So the thing I take away from that is 'Can I write a better song than that?' That's that's where I'm at. And I don't know if I can."

Jack River, a.k.a Holly Rankin, was roaming New York and stumbled upon something "shining in the light."
The song would eventually go Platinum (after gold) while bringing her out of a tough time in her career.

Jack Froggatt and Lachlan Bostock, two of the three members of Sydney band Mansionair.
Alex Nicholls is the third, he plays the drums.
In 2014 they uploaded a track called Hold Me Down, landed a record deal and international tours with Churches, Alt-J, Florence and the Machine and London Grammar.
After all the touring the band arrive back in Sydney, it’s 2016.
Easier is inspired by a scene from Lost in Translation where Scarlett Johansson asks Bill Murray, "I'm stuck. Does it get easier?"

Gordi’s latest album Our Two Skins came out in 2020 and featured songs written while touring around the world.
She's chosen Volcanic, from that album, as some of her best work.
She began writing the song in Stockholm, recording an initial demo on a hotel's grand piano.
Though it all came together in Berlin inside a seemingly chaotic new location.
"I was searching for a space to sort of just start doing some of my own writing. And I came into this big warehouse.
"And there was all this, like, metal work being done around me. But it was kind of cool, because it meant I could just like, go for it."
Since it's release the song's garnered an emotional response from fans.
"Someone wrote to me saying, 'Volcanic, like, I've never heard a song so sort of aptly capture what it feels like to panic.'"
