Can political and personal conversations coexist without conflict? Discover the surprising insights of Philip Blackett, an accomplished author and entrepreneur, on the Communication TwentyFourSeven podcast. Philip’s transformation from liberal to conservative, influenced heavily by his Christian faith, offers a unique perspective on the changing political preferences among Black voters leading up to the 2024 elections. His book, "Disagree Without Disrespect," serves as a guide for those looking to engage in meaningful discussions without sacrificing relationships—a must-listen for anyone navigating today's polarized climate.
As we look into the shifting media landscape, we scrutinize the role of social and mainstream media in shaping public discourse. The democratization of information through social media has not only empowered voices but has also fostered negative behaviors like anonymous trolling and sensationalism. This segment explores how the competitive media environment has eroded public trust and contributed to societal polarization, urging a reevaluation of how we consume and engage with news.
Looking to the future, we discuss the Republican Party's strategy beyond the 2024 elections. With growing support from Black and Hispanic voters, Philip Blackett underscores the importance of focused outreach and developing a pipeline of future leaders. We emphasize the need for a shared set of values and principles that transcend identity politics, aiming to build a diverse coalition united by common beliefs. By transforming the way we visualize news distribution, Minimap AI's content cartography promises to arm you with a deeper understanding of the stories shaping our world, far surpassing the left-right dichotomy.
This episode maps out a revolutionary system that spatially arranges news topics, revealing trends and the breadth of coverage at a glance. Have you ever stopped to think about the power of your words and how they can shape your professional success? That's exactly what we tackle in a captivating conversation with communications maestro, Antoni Lacinai.
As we navigate through the digital age, communication is becoming more critical in leadership than ever before, particularly in the complex dynamics of hybrid work environments. We challenge the idea that everyone should aim to be a thought leader or an expert in their field and discuss the role of leaders and managers in fostering a climate of safety and openness, particularly for remote teams. Antoni helps us unpack the intriguing concept of 'focus flow' and the importance of creating virtual social spaces for employees. We also explore the intricate dance between leaders and managers when making decisions, and the different qualities they bring to the table.
In this thought-provoking discussion, Antoni also enlightens us on the different levels of listening and finding the balance between micromanaging and abdicating to effectively coach people. We discuss the delicate process of delivering bad news with empathy and the value of personalized conversations. As we close, Antoni offers a special gift - a free download of his upcoming book, a testament to his commitment to making the world a better place through better communication. Listen in to learn how to strive for effective communication, not perfection, and transform your professional life one conversation at a time.

What happens when a seasoned pediatrician and parent coach, Dr. Elizabeth Henry, joins forces with me, your host Jennifer Furlong, to untangle the complexities of supporting LGBTQ youth? How do we as parents and caregivers approach the difficult, yet necessary, conversations with our children about societal issues like school shootings and their impact on mental health? This episode promises to equip you with the understanding and tools to navigate these hard conversations.
Media bias, technology, and the raw impact of societal tragedies are no strangers to the world of our children. As we dive into our own conversation on these difficult topics, Dr. Liz offers her valuable insights on how these elements influence our children's perceptions, and the importance of being aware of your child's media consumption. We also discuss understanding your child's maturity level and how to tailor conversations that are age-appropriate, acknowledging that parental emotions can shape the way children interpret information.
Finally, we turn our focus onto the often misunderstood terrain of gender identity and the experiences of the LGBTQ community. Dr. Liz highlights the unique attitudes of Gen Z towards labels, and the high rates of depression and suicide among LGBTQ youth. We also discussed the controversial use of hormone blockers for transgender youth. Dr. Liz and I don't necessarily agree when it comes to some of these topics and it's not an easy conversation, but we absolutely 100 percent agree that it's one we all need to be able to have. So join us, as we break down barriers and foster understanding to better support our youth today.

Jennifer Arvin Furlong interviews Lauren Fonvielle, an integrative energy practitioner, who introduces us to the transformative world of the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). EFT is an evidence-based therapeutic method that significantly reduces anxiety, PTSD, phobias, and even depression. Lauren shares her personal journey with EFT and how she discovered this fantastic tool to manage her anxiety. She also enlightens us on how to incorporate this technique into public speaking and interpersonal communication.
We then turn our attention to the science behind EFT, revealing that it doesn't just offer relief from emotional stress; it also aids us in making better decisions by reducing cortisol levels. It's a form of self-care that can help lift the weight of stress and anxiety from your shoulders. We also discuss how to use a scale to identify and assess your level of anxiety or fear and how tapping can be used to gradually move to a better state.
By the end of our conversation, you’ll understand how tapping can help you take control of your emotions, giving you access to your inner strength. So tune in, and let's explore the incredible benefits of tapping therapy together.

LinkedIn is an extremely powerful tool for entrepreneurs and small business owners. We use it to communicate our goals, our vision, and our calls to action. We can create a network of supporters and reach out to a deep pool of potential clients. Are we using it as effectively as we could be? That's why I asked Daniel Alfon to be my guest on the Communication TwentyFourSeven Podcast.
Daniel is the author of "Build a LinkedIn Profile for Business Success" and has trained thousands of people using a simple method he developed to help leaders reach their objectives. How? Well, I can tell you his method does not include cold calling or cold connecting, paying for a premium account or for advertising, or trying to be someone you're not.
Listen as Jennifer Furlong and Daniel Alfon discuss how you can leverage LinkedIn to get leads and revenue in an authentic and organic way, by doing what's smart, not what's popular.

We talk a lot about goal setting and the daily work that is required to achieve those goals. But what happens after you achieve your goal? What if you get all that you wanted, and you find you’re still not happy? By his mid-20s, Kevin Palmieri had it all. The beautiful girl. The fit body. The nice car. The fat bank account. Despite how everything looked on the outside, internally Kevin was a mess. He knew he had hit rock bottom when he found himself sitting on the side of his bed contemplating suicide. What saved him? It started with one powerful conversation with a trusted mentor.
Now, Kevin is the Founder & Co-Host of Next Level University, a Global Top 100 self-improvement podcast that reaches more than 650,000 people in more than 125 countries. He has found happiness through service to others.
Listen as Jennifer Furlong and Kevin Palmieri discuss the dangers of relying on external results for internal fulfillment and how grateful ambition and quality conversations are key to aligning your actions with your goals and values, and why the quality of thought is what truly matters.

Studies have shown that by the time a child reaches the age of 18, they have heard negative phrases like, “don’t do” or “don’t say” over 150,000 times. In contrast, they have heard less than 2,000 words with positive associations like encouragement, self-worth, and belief. This ratio raises havoc on a child’s subconscious mind as they seek to mold their identity. Author Wade Bergner has written a series of books that are intended to reinforce a child’s unconditional self-worth and awaken their mind to the splendid mysteries hidden in everyday life! He does this by sharing entertaining stories of hope and resiliency and encouraging connections between children and their families.
Listen as Jennifer Furlong and Wade Bergner discuss how being diagnosed with a reading disability at a young age was the catalyst for Wade becoming an author and why he wants you to come to know your unconditional worth so that you can spread that message to others.

We humans are very good at attaching our sense of self-worth to our wins. But life will throw us curve balls that can result in immense pain and a profound sense of loss. When we're in the middle of experiencing loss, we empathize with the pain. What can we do when we’re not handling the losses so well? How do we go from empathizing with the problem to empathizing with the opportunity? That’s why I asked James Heppner to be my guest on the next episode of the Communication TwentyFourSeven podcast. The world is an unpredictable place. One day you could wake up to the news that your organization’s reputation has been attacked in a review. Another day you could wake up to the news that one of your employees is accusing a member of the leadership team of misconduct. On a different day you could wake up to the news that there has been a massive data breach and all your customers’ sensitive information has been stolen. Not too long ago, we all woke up to the news that we were in the middle of a pandemic. If you’re in charge of an organization, large or small, it’s important to know that your reputation will be won or lost online.
From the largest Fortune 500 company to the smallest business with a staff of one, your reputation is at risk. That’s why I asked David Oates to be my guest on the Communication TwentyFourSeven Podcast. David possesses more than 25 years of strategic public relations experience dealing with a wide array of adverse public events. Starting as a U.S. Navy Public Affairs Officer and later as a Corporate Chief Marketing Officer and Non-Profit President, he excels in expertly addressing a myriad of crises that span military, government, corporate, charity, and start-up environments. His crisis communications experiences include handling employee and executive misconduct, cybersecurity attacks, product recalls, mass layoffs, large-scale accidents, criminal investigations, and civil litigation matters.
Take a listen as Jennifer Furlong and David Oates discuss the most common crises organizations typically encounter, and how to prepare for them, or even better, prevent them from happening.

If you have embarked on a path of small business ownership, like many others, you probably had this fantasy of being your own boss and enjoying all the freedom that being your own boss would surely provide. You thought you'd build some workshops and people would sign up. You would create a podcast and people would listen. You would be the master of your calendar and in turn, have lots of free time. Does this sound familiar? If so, you are not alone. As a matter of fact, all of this was really what Jennifer Furlong believed when she decided to create Communication TwentyFourSeven. It can all be overwhelming What is a rookie business owner to do?
Meet Thomas Wu, the pack leader at Koyoti, Inc., a full-service marketing agency. Thomas is a brand strategist and marketing expert with over 20 years of experience, but even more importantly, his work with small businesses combined with his experience as a small business owner provides him with a deeper understanding of what small business owners need. About a year and a half ago, he decided to go beyond his own comfort zone and created the Koyoti Small Business Podcast where he talks about a variety of challenges that come along with small business ownership like social media marketing, bookkeeping, mental health, and communication.
Listen as Jennifer and Thomas discuss entrepreneurial life, the importance of relationship building, and why Thomas is so dedicated to helping other small business owners tackle the scarcity of resources.

Did you know that using your authentic voice (the range of pitches that come from your diaphragm) makes you easier to listen to? Think about it. There are some people you could listen to all day, while there are others you can barely stand to listen to for 2 minutes. Do you ever wonder if there’s a science behind that? Those who have learned to use their authentic voice appear confident and in control through bold and intentional speaking. You can learn to do this also!
Jennifer Furlong interviews Susan Murphy, voice coach and founder of VOSOT: Better Broadcast Voices. Susan has been in the broadcast industry for over 40 years with experience as a radio news director, TV news reporter, and “weather girl” (back when they called them that)! She has also been a talk show host and producer for radio, a public television producer and on-air personality, a college dean and instructor, and a voiceover artist. Susan now focuses her talents on helping TV anchors and reporters develop their optimum broadcast voice.
Take a listen to Jen and Susan as they discuss how you too can tap into your authentic speaking voice and why you should.

If you were to die tomorrow, would your family about your wishes for the next step? If your loved one was diagnosed with a terminal illness and they had only a small amount of time left, what would your final conversation sound like? What would you say? What would you ask? One thing that will impact us all no matter our age, gender, race, or socio-economic status, is death, for death is a natural part of life. And yet, we hesitate to talk about it, despite it being among the most important conversations we should have with our family.
Carin Mikos talks about her experiences as a death doula and some of the most important lessons she has learned. A death doula is someone who helps people nearing death prepare emotionally and spiritually. They are also known as an end-of-life doula, a transition guide, a soul midwife, a death midwife, or a death coach. Carin has been a registered nurse for almost 25 years and has spent the past 3 years as a hospice nurse. She recently established a death doula consulting business with the goal of serving the needs of families and their loved ones as they transition.
Listen as Jennifer Furlong and Carin Mikos discuss why you should talk with your loved ones about death and how you might approach the conversation if you're uncomfortable doing so.

On April 16, 2009, Kim Hamer watched her 44-year-old husband take his last breath. During his illness and after his death, she was amazed by the helpful ways their coworkers, bosses, friends, and family supported them. Kim started calling their kind actions "acts of love".
After the death of her husband, Kim, an HR leader, noticed how little guidance leaders received when navigating cancer, a health crisis, or the death of a team member. She knew their lack of knowledge negatively affected morale, employee engagement, and productivity. She set out to change that. Combining her personal experience with her professional knowledge and leadership skills, Kim launched her business to support leaders and coworkers when cancer (or any health crisis) affects a team member.
Listen as Jennifer Furlong and Kim Hamer discuss helping leaders, co-workers, and friends know what to say and what to do to support a person with cancer.

Cheryl Boone has been making art all her life, but it’s been more recently that she’s made it an effort to expose her work consistently and intentionally to the world. The intention of Cheryl’s work is to illuminate and illustrate the humanity of Black people. In Cheryl’s words, “Quite by accident, I have discovered how all of us, have all experienced unavoidable trauma of various kinds. Trauma affects our cellular function and is transmissible, generational and the effects are visible in our cells, not just in our memories. It prevents us from being the best version of ourselves. Tackling trauma may be the best thing we've ever done for ourselves, our families, and our communities. My invitation is to work on your personal healing. Begin to incorporate art into your life on a regular basis and allow it to soothe and settle you in a visceral way. Go to museums and art fairs and really look and feel. You'll love some things and hate others. Perfect! It's the connection, the inner conversation that will transform you. Then, find YOUR creative song and sing it! Take an art class, an improv class or music or whatever appeals to you. Be free and don't worry about how well you do. The point is to do. Let's all draw, paint, act, do stand-up, cook, crochet, sing, dance, sculpt, journal, and build our way to a more peaceful, healthier spirit!” Listen as Jennifer Furlong and Cheryl Boone talk about Juneteenth as a day of recognition, restoration, and celebration and how we can use art as a tool to open minds and have difficult conversations about race and the Black experience. Emily McGill is a spiritual seeker, tarot reader, storytelling strategist, and a deep believer in the power of community. After nearly a decade and a half of working in entertainment in New York City as a Broadway and entertainment publicist and communications consultant, her path of self-exploration led to healing and evolution - and reading tarot cards professionally. Emily was invited to read tarot for virtual Burning Man 2021 and Brooklyn's dry speakeasy Club Curious. She has been featured by The Tamron Hall Show, the NY Post, and Thrive Global. She writes Playbill’s Broadway Horoscopes, and currently in development is her own deck, The Broadway Tarot.
Take a listen to Jennifer Furlong and Emily McGill explore the many ways the tarot can be used in communication...and even in business!

Junk news is like junk food, and just like junk food has caused massive health epidemics in our country, junk news is causing a massive polarization epidemic. The Communication TwentyFourSeven Podcast is pleased to announce a special episode with the analysts behind the Media Bias Chart.
Host Jennifer Furlong and special guests Rhodell Fields, Erin Fox-Ramirez, Dan Madsen, and Roshen Matthew discuss what it's like to be a media analyst, the challenges of reliability and bias in the news, the benefits of working with others that have different political leanings, and how you too can become a savvy consumer of the news.

Jennifer Furlong interviews Eddie Rice, author of the book "Toast: Short Speeches, Big Impact." Knowing how to write a speech isn’t just for those who want to deliver a keynote or a TED Talk. I’m excited about this interview because we learned so much about writing for special occasions. Life events happen and you never know when you will be asked to deliver a speech! You could be called upon to deliver a toast at a wedding, or for an anniversary, or for retirement, or to deliver a eulogy at a funeral.

In this edition of "Unscripted," Jennifer Furlong interviews Dr. Jeremy Sherman, social science writer and researcher. Jeremy’s research is cradle to grave: from the chemical origins of life to our grave situation. Psychology Today, for which he has written more than 1,000 articles, describes him as “mind candy for people who aren’t afraid to think.” Jeremy is a specialist in a-holery and jerkology. He calls himself a psychoproctologist, which means he is engaged in careful scientific research on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of buttheadedness. How does one become a specialist in a-holes and jerks? One way is by carefully studying how language has influenced how humans adapt (or not) to reality. This is an enlightening, entertaining, informative, and stimulating discussion about words, perception, and critical thinking.
