  • Getting grounded
  • Breathing techniques
  • Finding gratitude
  • Celebrating your wins, no matter how big or small

Kerry hopes you are able to find moments of joy and ask for help whenever it is needed (even if that is just a listening ear)

One year ago I was preparing for my trip to Mexico to participate in my first full Iron-Man.  When I look back of course there were lessons learned, but when I look forward that is when dreams are created.

"The moment in front of you is not bothering you... you are bothering yourself, so deal with it"  ~ Michael Singer

It reminded me of the power to have time to just think.

The 4 components of the power of momentum:

  1. Clarity - what did you love most about this past year? What was a moment that you really enjoyed? What were some magical moments? What did you celebrate that you accomplished this year?

  2. Certainty - What is a dream, wish, desire or hope? Be bold; what we focus on we find.

  3. Get fired up - write down your goal and your plan to get there. What would be your 1 year goal? What do you want the most?

  4. Commitment - know your why; what are the things that really matter to you in this goal?

Every single day make decisions that honour your must goal.

She lists some signs and symptoms that you may be experiencing at least one of them. Finally, she provides some helpful tips on what to do if you find yourself feeling extremely stressed or burned out.

Shownotes:

  • Stress occurs when you have too much demand placed on you mentally.
  • Common sign of burnout are a feeling that every day seems to be a bad day, lack of motivation, self-doubt, and feelings of loneliness.
  • Symptoms of stress are very obvious, and you usually know you are stressed.
  • Burnout tends to be less noticeable and drains you more subtly.
  • There are some triggers which you may want to look for as potential causes of burnout, such as your work not seeming valued or having an imbalance between work time and downtime.
  • One of the best ways to help yourself through burnout or stress is to know what you want/where you want to be.

Kerry discusses self-leadership without fear on today's Growtality podcast.  A common theme in Kerry's workshops and coaching sessions recently has been demands and life balance.  Kerry reminds us that ultimately what we focus on we find.  Join Kerry to learn the tactics and techniques to support you in driving self-leadership.

Shownotes:

  • Self-motivation in terms of "gaining" - focusing on doing things that will produce a significant result, get us closer to a goal, move us forward.
  • Self-motivation in terms of "preventing pain" - focusing on doing tasks that will prevent future pain. These are tasks that you have to do but that do not produce a significant result.
  • The importance of ensuring you have "gain" activities in your week.

  • Planning your conversations to make the most optimal use of your time
  • Opening up your mind to diverse thinking styles and listening to others' point of view

In today’s episode of The Growtality Podcast, Kerry discusses presence and communication. She gives 10 tips for how to be a better communicator, a few of which are listed below.

Shownotes:

  • Know your goal for a conversation before you have it.
  • Be aware of what traits you can bring to a discussion that make it more likely to be successful.
  • Remember 80/20 principles and try to be concise – avoid talking about too much at once.
  • Make sure you perceive a situation for what it is – not something much better or worse. Keep things realistic.

Today’s bonus episode is about reviewing 2021. Kerry shares a worksheet which guides you through determining what moves you, what the wins/losses are that you experienced, and what lessons you have learned overall. She also provides some insight from her own experience over the last year.

Some thoughts from the episode:

  • Having someone to support you through tough moments is helpful.
  • It’s easy to say you can’t, when you can, if you choose to.
  • Sometimes what you perceive as a loss may actually have been very beneficial in the long run.
  • Be willing to reach out to people who believe in you and support you, and that you can also help in return.
  • Learn to expect the unexpected – things won’t always go as planned. You won’t necessarily like the situation, but you’ll feel more prepared.

In today’s episode, our theme is “celebrate what’s right”. Too often we become so overloaded with our own fears and negativity that we forget about staying positive.

Today’s challenge: take another look at the world. There’s a lot more that’s “right” with it than you think.

Shownotes:

  • There is often more than one perspective you can take towards a situation. Choosing to view something from a position of love and interest rather a position of hate can make a difference.
  • Try to have fun and be creative with whatever you’re doing. Don’t be too focused on there only being “one right way” to do something.
  • Be willing to push yourself and go beyond your boundaries. Still, remember that this doesn’t happen overnight – it takes preparation.
  • Find ways to break up your routine and put small moments of joy into your day.

For this week's podcast episode, Kerry is answering questions she's received from listeners of the show.

Shownotes:

  • Be yourself when communicating with others.
  • Recognize that you are not being yourself when you are in a reactive state.
  • When dealing with an audience that has varying opinions on a topic, it is best to know at least some of the opinions in advance, and address them near the beginning of your talk. This builds rapport and makes people feel that they are being listened to.
  • Sometimes giving a blunt answer like "no" in response to a request is not a good strategy. Try to be more verbose about why you can't accommodate the other person's needs.

In this week’s podcast, Kerry discusses conflict and some strategies for resolving it. Dealing with conflict is one of the most important skills needed in order to work with a team effectively. There will always be something team members disagree on.

Conflict resolution can be simplified into five different “styles”, which are:

  • Accommodation – putting aside your needs and fully accept the demands of the other party.
  • Avoidance – ignoring the conflict (neither agreeing nor disagreeing).
  • Compromise – conceding some needs/demands to reach a fair deal
  • Competing – seeking to maintain your position at the expense of the other party
  • Collaborating – works best when both parties have a common problem, they come up with a common solution that benefits them both

The exact style you use is heavily dependent on two things: the value you place on the relationship with the other party, and the value you place on the problem itself.

Listen to the episode to learn more about these styles, as well as tips for when and when not to use specific styles.

In this week’s episode, Kerry discusses the importance of team relationships. As businesses start to shift towards a hybrid work model, effective communication has never been more important.

Summary:

  • To improve the quality of your discussions, try to view things from other people’s perspectives, rather than just seeing the conversation as a “your perspective vs. my perspective” battle.
  • Being open and honest is the secret to success in teamwork.
  • Accountability is very important in a team. If your team is finding it hard to get things done, having a discussion about how team members can hold each other accountable may help.
  • Behaviors that can destroy a team relationship include:
    • Avoiding blame at all costs
    • Trying to push blame onto others
    • Trying to make yourself look good at the expense of others

Donna Dube is the founder and CEO of Productivity Plus. She helps business owners increase their productivity, save time, and most importantly boost their revenue. Her services help business owners offload their day-to-day tasks, freeing them to work on the more important aspects of their business (e.g. their strategy). In today's episode, Donna chats with Kerry about how to be a more productive individual. She gives a wealth of practical examples and advice - definitely worth a listen! Summary:

  • Resist multitasking - studies show we are actually not more productive when we multitask. Instead, focus on just one task to completion. If the task is too big to finish in one setting, break it down into parts.
  • Email is a great way to communicate, but can drive our whole day if we allow it. Set specific times in your calendar for checking and responding to emails (2 to 3 times a day).
  • Learn your optimal focus time and take frequent, short breaks. Allow a buffer around meetings to have that short break, and actually take the break. The human body is not a machine, and it will collapse with too much pressure.
  • Learn how to delegate and pass tasks on to others to help you stay on track and be more productive.
  • Set long-term goals for your business, then break them down into smaller goals. In addition to giving you more manageable chunks of work, this also makes it easier for you to determine whether you are on track to finish your goal in a reasonable timeframe.

In today’s episode, Kerry talks about results and the power of focus. She also mentions her recent completion of a 70.3 Ironman triathlon and the lessons she learned from training and the actual race.

Results come from discipline, regular habits, and tracking your progress towards your goals.

Summary:

  • Our greatest difficulties often lead to our greatest results.
  • Accountability is very important. You are much more successful when you have someone who can hold you accountable.
  • Look at the reality of a situation. Don’t try to hide the truth, but don’t exaggerate it either.
  • By the same token, if it motivates you to view a situation as better than it really is, do that!
  • Have a plan for things that could go wrong while trying to complete a goal. That way, you already have a solution prepared when something does go wrong.
  • Ask questions of yourself to get where you want to be

As the first quarter of 2021 is behind us, Kerry joins us to talk about resiliency and how to build resiliency in our current environment.

Summary:

  • What techniques are you using to manage your mindset and energy? (exercise, meditation, planning, connections, humor, being present, using the practice of gratitude).
  • Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react. We must manage our attitude.
  • Building a plan for resiliency (support system, strategies you have used in the past, insights or wisdom that has worked for you in the past, required skills).
  • The Bridges Model of managing transitions by William Bridges
  • Managing transitions is a process and can feel like a rollercoaster
  • You are not alone, find the community and resources that will support you
  • Believe in yourself and your capabilities!
  • Find the space and time to just "be". Slowing down to speed up
  • Be curious, learn, ask questions. Keep your eyes wide open
  • Get creative
  • How are you doing with flexibility, innovation, tolerating stress and taking risks?
  • Being busy is a choice

Tips for managing and prioritizing your time:

  1. Remember those ANTS (automatic negative thoughts). Recognize those voices, notice them, label them and reframe them.

  2. Getting feedback. Seek to find out what the priority is and do not assume deadlines.

  3. Allocate time. Blocking, attacking and chunking on your calendar. Be realistic in what will get done. Delegate when you can.

  • One of the most important parts of your career is your first impression.
  • Always seek to understand the full picture of what you’re doing and why you’re doing it.
  • Make sure when explaining ideas to teammates that you give the big picture/the objective, not just the details.
  • Your work environment matters! Figure out what type of atmosphere makes you the most productive.
  • Think outside the box! If you’re struggling to find a solution, look at other players in the industry. See how they might have solved a similar problem.
  • Finding it difficult to get inspiration? Get hands-on with a project. In Ashley’s case, her team visited several stores to figure out what type of packaging would be best for a product. Later, she ended up working directly alongside the packaging manufacturers.
  • If you think you have a good idea, and you’ve evaluated the risks already, don’t listen to someone telling you “this won’t work” until you finish trying it!
  • Give your mind BREATHING SPACE: sleeping, walking, SWITCHING GEARS gives your subconscious a chance to make creative links and leaps.
  • Be CURIOUS: if you’re not hearing the ‘why’ or the business reason, ASK. Understanding the full picture is critical to achieving the highest creative vision.
  • VISUALIZE the vision you have for your teams: “I have a Pinterest board for everything...!”
  • Never stop at ‘THAT WON’T WORK’: Use the ‘no’ to drive further

Kerry had the pleasure of sitting down and speaking with Maricarmen Farias, a world triathlon champion who has an incredible energy and passion for serving others.

Known as MC, Maricarmen did her first triathlon back in 2011 at the age of 22, something that at the time seemed quite impossible. Crossing that first finish line brought so many valuable lessons and a huge desire to explore new possibilities.

Triathlon quickly became a vehicle for MC to set new standards, face fears, inspire, grow and gain confidence and belief in herself.

She is living proof that dreams are possible, that with hard work, relentless determination and support you can achieve anything you desire. Whether your goal is to do your first triathlon or take your current performance to the next level.

  • It's not where you were, it's where you want to go forward.
  • Life is a journey of growing and overcoming obstacles. Sport has taught MC this in so many ways.
  • What are the little things you do in your day to set yourself up for success?
  • Personal development - making time for yourself (journaling, meditating, reading, filling up your cup).
