Hello, dear listeners! Happy Turkey Day! Thanksgiving is a complex and difficult holiday to discuss. More often than not it's a given holiday folks use to gather with loved ones, but its roots in Indigenous oppression should not be ignored.
That said, we're not discussing the origins of Thanksgiving today. Instead, we wanted to talk a little bit about Indigenous food and about a band whose music has been sweeping TikTok - one of the first Indigenous music groups to have a song land in the top 5 of the Billboard Hot 100. This is by no means an excruciatingly researched essay - just a foray into some topics around food and music that interested us, things we wanted to bring to the metaphorical table. Grassroots and community organization - change from the ground-up, often operating outside of capitalistic structures - have been a vital force for change, especially for Black people and within Black circles. This year has been radicalizing and divisive, and we wanted to bring up ways that people can assist their communities outside of presidential elections. If you're feeling fatigued by national issues and want to find a way to help the people closer to home, this episode may be for you.
It goes without saying that we support the initiatives of the Black Panther Party and unequivocally support the Black Lives Matter movement.
