Driving in Scotland is a whole different experience—left-hand driving, impossibly narrow roads, and roundabouts at nearly every turn. You might find yourself squeezing past a stone wall on one side and an oncoming car on the other, wondering how this can count as a two-lane road.

If that sounds a little intimidating, you’re not alone. But driving is often the most efficient—and rewarding—way to explore the country. In Part 1 of this two-part series, I’m walking you through what it’s actually like to take the wheel in Scotland. From understanding road types to navigating roundabouts and shifting your mindset for left-side driving, this episode will help you head into your trip with a clear sense of what to expect.

You might still feel a little anxious the first time you hit the road, but being prepared can go a long way toward making the whole experience feel less overwhelming—and a lot more doable.

As we near the end of the year and celebrate 4 years of podcast content, I’m taking a moment to reflect on the core message of this show. You’ve likely heard me say that 'daily happiness and more travel aren’t just for digital nomads,' but what does that really mean?

On this episode, we’re unpacking the ‘nomad dream,’ examining how your travel frequency impacts your happiness, and exploring what it truly looks like to create a life you love—where travel enhances, rather than defines, your experience.

As we approach another year of the podcast, my goal remains the same: to inspire you to design a fulfilling life where travel is an exciting part of it (but not the entire picture).

I only travel with a very select few people. One of them: my not-so-travel-obsessed hubby. When I had the idea to have him come onto the show as a guest, I was so surprised he didn't shoot down the idea immediately, but it was a blast having him on.

Our chat turned into a laid-back reminiscing session about our very first adventure abroad that we took early in our relationship. What my husband refers to as a "not normal trip", this adventure left us with a ton of funny stories and plenty of evidence that we can do hard/new/sketchy things together.

Plus, Kyle shares his perspective on being married to someone whose passion is planning vacations, even though travel isn't his top interest. Tune in for a genuine, candid conversation with one of my favorite travel companions – my husband, Kyle Gillmeister.

Ever feel like life and vacations are stuck on autopilot, following a script written by society? Yeah, me too, but I’m kind of over it. I firmly believe that the key to a happier life and amazing vacations is tossing out the pre-decided life milestones, scripted daily grind, and society's vacation to-do list. Society’s one-size-fits-all approach is not the answer – it's time to break away from the default in both life and vacation and customize your experiences. This episode is here to inspire you to take the reins and design a life and vacation that resonate with you. Let's trade in the mundane for the extraordinary and aim for richer, deeper experiences by ditching the default and living life on your own terms. LISTEN BACK:

When I first started traveling, I had to lug around a binder with printed confirmations and a handwritten calendar to keep me organized on a trip. And my system worked, but I am definitely happy to replace my cute little binder with some ultra-lightweight phone apps instead.

There are a handful of apps that I consistently recommend to all of my clients - and that I personally use, too - so on this episode, I’m listing out what those are, along with one app I do NOT recommend.

Sometimes the excitement leading up to a vacation is almost as good as the trip itself - and I want you to experience that.

But the reality is often that it doesn’t hit us that the vacation is coming up until a few weeks before, and then we have to scramble around prepping our jobs, our house, and our family for our absence, while simultaneously shopping, packing, and doing last-minute planning for the trip. Those rushed few weeks before a trip can sometimes make us feel like it’s not even worth it to take a vacation.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

I fully believe that with a little bit of planning and forethought into WHEN we are planning our vacation, those weeks before a trip don’t have to feel like a sprint.

Vacation planning is one of those things that falls to the bottom of the list when life gets busy. And putting vacation planning into your busy schedule like other career, family, or work to-dos is not something we think about doing, but that’s what we are doing in this episode.

I’m helping you come up with the planning timeline for your next vacation, so you know when you need to buckle down, hit certain milestones, and also when you can sit back and get excited.

If you’ve ever found yourself on a vacation that didn’t quite live up to your expectations, you might be tempted to think that the next time around, you should lower your expectations.

After all, “if you have expectations, you are setting yourself up for disappointment” and “if you expect nothing, you are never disappointed”, right?

And while those sayings may pass the “logic test”, I believe we should have very clear expectations for our vacations (for so many reasons)!

But I also know that sometimes we can take our expectations a little too far.

On this episode, I'm showing you how that beautiful vision you have in your head is so important to having an amazing vacation - and also how to manage that vision so that it isn't the thing to bring down your experience. Tune in as I help you have a heart-to-heart with your brain and your expectations for your next vacation!

I’ll be the first to scream from the rooftops that you should NOT compromise at all on your vacation plans, but the reality is that there is a time and place to compromise, especially if we’re traveling with other people, have limited vacation time, or a set vacation budget. (Which is most likely the majority of the time.)

Fortunately there is a way to compromise that doesn’t make you feel resentful or unfulfilled from your vacation. But there’s also a time where you should guard your vacation experience like a lioness and NOT compromise at all.

So how do we strike a balance between getting the vacation that we want without dominating the vacation plans for everyone in the group?

Have a listen to dive into this oh-so-important topic!

I don’t know about you, but there are some weeks where I am literally just winging it day-by-day.

And months where I just take it week-by-week.

And then there is the occasional Sunday where I do make the time to sit down and get a handle on my work to-dos, plan out our meals, and start the week with a tidy house - but it’s usually a one-off.

But as a busy working mom, I can tell you that none of those approaches have been doing it for me - and my recent experience with my schedule has been total overwhelm.

I have known for a while that something needs to shift, and the answer to the overwhelm has appeared to me in the form of seasonal planning - and I’m going ALL IN.

I’ve been geeking out over the idea of planning everything from work tasks to dinner to friends' weekends…

And from when I want to have my tea, fit in a workout, and enjoy reading my book.

And the best part about this approach is you pretty much only have to do this 4 times a year.

Even though I’m still in the thick of it, I can’t NOT share this with you in case it is the thing you’ve been missing, too.

Would love to hear from you if you already do some type of seasonal planning, or if you plan to implement this after this episode!

I’ve dealt with airport anxiety for YEARS. Until…very recently when I was “accidentally” cured.

I just realized on my most recent vacation that the fears, worries, and fast heart rate that usually accompany me to the airport didn’t tag along - and I was oddly very calm and chill, even though we had some annoying delays.

So how the heck did that happen? What was the cure?

I’ve got the behind-the-scenes scoop for you today on how I went from someone who used to panic when I wasn’t the first stop on the parking shuttle - to someone who now knows what it feels like to move through the airport WITHOUT a bunch of mind drama.

This is a story that I hope you’ll be able to relate to or learn from if you also suffer from airport anxiety - and if you don’t, I hope you get a kick out of it! ;)

Vacation Packages. Sound dull, restrictive, and old school?

Especially for my fellow independent travelers - they can be if you aren’t careful. There is definitely a right and a wrong way to package a vacation.

And even though us independent travelers (raising my hand here!) are usually more comfortable with booking everything separately - outside of a package - there are some pretty compelling reasons why you might want to consider packaging your next vacation.

One of the things I love about being a mother is seeing the wonder of the world through my son’s eyes. Everything is so fresh and new, which means feelings of excitement, curiosity, and fun!

When we are new to traveling abroad, we take with us those fresh and eager eyes, too. But as we travel to more and more places, our sense of awe and wonder starts to fade a bit, just like it does when transitioning from childhood to adulthood.

But traveling the world with a sense of wonder is unlike anything else, and just because we travel more doesn’t mean we have to lose those feelings, so I’m sharing with you a list of ideas to bring back the wonder into your travels, even if you’ve traveled quite a bit.

Why would you EVER want to feel uncomfortable on a vacation?

Well, we don’t want to feel that way, of course. But sometimes traveling abroad can bring us worry, anxiety, or general discomfort.

And yet we still feel that tug to travel to that off-the-beaten path destination. We still wonder what it’s REALLY like to be immersed in that different culture. We still are deep down craving MORE than that comfortable annual beach trip.

If you’ve been holding back from taking trips because of the discomfort factor, I’ve got all of the inspiration and practical tips you need today to help you feel better about traveling to that destination that makes you feel just a little uncomfortable. ;)

Q: What’s something that allows us to have amazing vacation experiences?

A: Money!

And believe me, I have a TON to say about how our “relationship with money” is the main thing that affects whether or not we live out our traveling dreams (and to what extent).

So there is one magical number in particular that I want to focus on today: $3,000.

It’s a pretty special number when it comes to our vacations, and especially if you feel like money is the main thing holding you back from taking those vacations you’ve been dreaming about for years, it’s a number I want to ingrain in your head -- for 2 very different and equally important reasons.

I recently took myself away for a solo retreat with a focus on rest, relaxation, and some business projects, and OMG was it amazing.

I can now officially claim that I’ve NAILED the staycation, even though I’m a definite “busybody” on vacation. And because I want the staycation to become more the norm for us busy professional women, I’m dishing to you the FIVE most important things to be mindful of when you’re planning one for yourself. (Which I know you’re going to want to do after hearing how calm and rested but also gushy I was about my experience).

If you’re also a busybody who has never really seen the appeal of a staycation, you might just change your mind after hearing my experience and tips for how to staycation the “right” way.

I’m rounding out the hiking travel story series with a story of my own, and this story is a big deal because it’s basically the origin story of my love for hiking - which, spoiler alert, didn’t happen all that long ago.

And even though I definitely -

think the amazing scenery is the main appeal of hiking

love the physical challenge of hiking to prove to myself that I can do it

have had some life revelations while hiking

  • the driving reason why I hike is different from all of our other guests, and will probably make you raise your eyebrows a bit!

In addition to just being a great hiking tale, my hope is that my story will show you that it’s never too late to dive into a new activity and you might be surprised at a passion you find once you do.

We hike for the amazing scenery. And to prove to ourselves that we can do hard things.

But a byproduct of our hiking adventures is usually a life lesson or two - whether that’s the goal or not!

Melody Woolford joins me on this episode to give us a recap of one of the many hikes she took with her teenage son on a recent 3.5-month-long trip around the world, and she’s sharing how this hike pushed her and brought some life lessons to the surface for her, even as a world traveler and experienced hiker.

If you’ve considered taking that hiking trip, but have ever felt afraid, worried, or like you couldn’t do it, Melody’s story will show you how to overcome the hurdles, take the hike, and be looking for little life lessons along the way to have an even deeper experience.

Other than seeing some amazing scenery, there’s another really compelling reason to hike: to show yourself how strong, capable, and badass you are.

Because there is just something about taking a big hike in the wild that gets even the fittest and most experienced hikers out of their comfort zone.

Debra Hampton joins me on this episode to give us a recap of one of the hardest hikes she’s ever done, including what motivated her to take the hike, some standout memorable moments, and an ironic but relatable least favorite part that’s sure to make you giggle.

If your wild hair is telling you to take that hiking trip even though you aren’t sure if you could physically do it, Debra’s story has the motivation for you to do it. And do it sooner than later.

If you think that those amazing views on Instagram are only reserved for hikers…well, that’s kinda true.

Most of the time, the BEST views can’t be seen from a car.

But even if you don’t consider yourself a hiker doesn’t mean that you aren’t ever gonna lay eyes on those landscapes.

Shea Newton is joining me on this episode to share with us a travel story where she did a multi-day, international hiking trip…even though she’d never been hiking before the trip! And while she didn’t really know what to expect before the trip, she was amazed at being able to see landscapes that the majority of the world will never see, and also had her eyes opened to an entirely new experience.

If your wild hair is telling you to take that hiking trip even though you don’t have much experience, Shea’s story is the inspiration you need!

So I polled the women inside the Happy Women Travel More Facebook group about their opinion of hiking. A: Always pack your hiking boots on every trip your take?B: Nah, not really a fan of walking aimlessly through the woods? The consensus was a clear "C": the majority enjoys hiking if the scenery is “worth it”. You know - worth all of the effort you put in. Worth the hours you spend putting one foot in front of the other. Worth the soreness you’re gonna be feeling for a day or two. So when we choose to go hiking on our vacations, we want that guarantee. We want to know that we will are going to be WOWed by the landscapes around us. On this destination feature episode, I’m telling you about one destination in the world where you have that guarantee - and the hiking is 1000% worth it. Come see if you can guess what the destination is, and learn where the prettiest region to hike is in this destination. As busy professional women, we have a LOT going on, so we must choose our vacation days carefully. It’s common to think that WHEN you get more of those things you want, you’ll feel satisfied, happier, and more fulfilled. But that’s just not true. Even though as humans we’re always wanting the next thing, true satisfaction comes when you feel happy with what you currently have more than pining for what you want. But “wanting more” is fun. Learning more, achieving more, building more, growing more, making more money - that journey keeps us going. So how do we straddle that line between loving where we’re at and also desiring MORE? Making sure that you book your vacation enough in advance usually depends on when you plan to go, but there is one month that stands above all of the rest as being the BEST time to lock in that vacation (or three) for next year.

The timing makes so much sense from a forward-thinking, new-year planning standpoint, and it also removes the risk that a few of the other months introduce. And I believe it is simply the BEST at ensuring you actually go on that vacation.

When I approach packing for a vacation, I like to plan ahead and make sure that I bring everything I could possibly need along with me. Because I don’t want to be wasting time on vacation searching for an item, washing clothes, or just not having something I need.

But all of this packing prep does causes me to spend a lot of time and headspace on packing for every vacation…and it just feels so hard every time. And I usually have a pretty heavy suitcase.

I’ve spent years trying to get “better” at packing, but recently I had an epiphany about being an “overpacker “ that has totally changed my view on packing.

If you can’t seem to nail the whole minimalist packing thing (like me), this episode is for you.

"Travel is unlike anything else."
"Travel is transformative."
"Travel changes you for life."

We've all heard the sayings, but do you actually know what that means? Have you had a deep and impactful experience where you’ve experienced this?

It’s actually pretty difficult to go beyond a surface level experience on a vacation, but it’s not impossible if you know what to look out for (and plan for). If a little part of you is jealous of all of those people who have had those deep and rich travel experiences, you’re going to love this conversation I had with wellness entrepreneur and digital nomad Chardet Ryel.

We chat about things like how travel can help us connect with ourselves, how to have a “soul-searching” vacation with limited vacation time, and how to just have a deeper experience when you travel. We keep it practical and light (with lots of giggles), with the goal of encouraging you to get to know yourself and love yourself more deeply through travel.

We are busy. And planning a vacation is a lot of work. So anything that makes planning and booking the vacation easier is a good thing, right?

Usually, yes. But just using the filter of “easy to plan and book” for our vacation doesn’t always give us the experience that we had in mind. Let’s chat about some of the things to consider before you let that “easy booking” lure you in!

Usually the thought of taking a vacation sounds amazing, but sometimes it just sounds easier to NOT take one. From delegating tasks and getting ahead on your workload to making sure that your pets and your garden are cared for while you’re away, the sheer amount of prep work that it takes to step away from your career and home life is staggering.

And when you start to consider what the vacation will be like traveling with your kids and all of the tiny details that you would need to plan to actually go on this vacation, you’ve suddenly talked yourself out of that idyllic dream vacation within 2 minutes.

I get it. But I’m not leaving you behind to talk yourself out of a vacation for the next 5 years. I’m here to help you see how taking consistent vacations can just become a ‘thing that you do’.

Traveling with a big group of people across Europe? Not really a fan. It's one those things that sounds fun in theory, but the reality is more often anything but that idyllic vacation you had in mind.

I took a Caribbean vacation with just my hubby when my baby boy was 8 months old, and I had a LOT of feelings to process before the trip about the decision to leave him at home with grandma. Once we got on the trip, I had even more feelings to process, which were different than expected, and now that it’s been a couple of months since the trip, I can really reflect back on these feelings in a more neutral way.

If you feel like you can’t take a vacation because you have a little one, you aren’t alone, but hopefully this chat will give you the perspective and permission to see how it can be possible for you, too. Yes, even with all of the worries!

Is your comfort zone keeping you from better travel experiences?

If you’ve found yourself doing the same ‘ol things on vacation to the point that it’s starting to feel a bit - dare I say - "boring", then maybe so.

But also maybe not. You might just know your travel style well enough to know which activities that are outside of your comfort zone are worth the momentary discomfort.

Our comfort zone is a huge dictator of our vacation experience, and it goes hand in hand with our Confidence travel style, so let’s find a balance between stretching ourselves a bit so we have more impactful experiences, while not getting so far outside of our comfort zone that it flat out doesn’t feel good.
