In Episode 45, John Vargas shares his experience as a person who wears hearing aids. How does he compensate for being hard of hearing? Which accessibility features and accommodations have been the most helpful for him? He makes many important points, including the following: just because he has trouble hearing you doesn’t mean he’s not listening.
John Vargas is a Ph.D student studying cognitive psychology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. John studies reasoning and decision-making, with a special emphasis on statistical reasoning. John's prior research has focused on teaching statistical concepts to a wide variety of learners and empowering individuals to make rational decisions in their everyday lives. John also has congenital hearing loss, wears hearing aids, and is intimately aware of the challenges brought about by hearing impairments.

Dr. Megan Gross is a speech-language pathologist, an assistant professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and the director of the Bilingual Language Development Lab. She explains why the “difference versus disorder” framework is a helpful start but may oversimplify a child's language experience, instead encouraging a move towards a “disorder within diversity” lens. Megan describes how a language disorder looks in Spanish and how shifts in language dominance over time can impact the presentation of a language disorder. She encourages us to not view bilinguals as a separate group, but as individuals on a huge spectrum of language experience. Megan also talks to us about her community-based partnerships. Strengths-based practice - sounds simple enough, right? But are you truly using a strengths-based approach, or are you just creating isolated moments for your client to engage with their interests while you actually still try to make them act neurotypical because you're not engaging with your own biases and internalized ableism instead of taking a client-centered, functional, holistic therapeutic approach that encourages the client to be the agent of their own change?

Today's topic: Clinical Fellowships! In Episode 5, the SLPs share helpful tips for navigating the Clinical Fellowship (CF), but they also discuss embarrassing stories from their own CF years, what to do when you might disagree with your supervisor (& how a good supervisor will be open to new ideas), and why they all basically spent their first year Googling “what is speech therapy” in between treatment sessions. They also explain why navigating your CF can feel like trying to make a huge wedding cake for the first time. 🍰

The SLPs are back with part 2 of their evaluation conversation 🎙.
In episode 4, the SLPs share more entertaining client stories, and Kyla gives some seriously helpful considerations for bilingual language assessments. There is also a fair amount of fangirling over the Leaders Project SLAM cards – listen to find out why they love them so much. Like, SO much.
Also, Jouli discusses the time that she was hit in the face with cottage cheese during a trach eval. #slplife

This week the SLPs are sharing their most amusing evaluation stories. They dare you to keep a straight face as they recount tales of singing students, Batman voices, and surprising CELF responses!
The SLPs also begin a deep dive into all things evals, and a good amount of venting is done about the all-too-common, not-too-helpful arbitrary cutoff scores for standardized tests. Also, why do SLPs call the most skilled assessment procedures “informal”? Tune in for equal parts hilarity and clever SLP talk. (Ooh yes, tell me again about “task analysis”...)
Stay tuned for part 2!
The SLPs are back at it - and with a deliciously juicy topic 🧃
This episode is for all the school-based SLPs on lunch duty, bus duty, and all the duties in between. The ones who are introduced as “the speech teacher” and feel the quiet ripple of frustration about constantly being misunderstood and mislabeled.
Here’s a sneak peek of this week’s topics:
Episode 2 discusses all of this and more, and the SLPs come to a surprising conclusion: perhaps the issue isn’t being called a “speech teacher”…but something else entirely. 😯

Note: the SLPs recorded this episode together in person (yay!), but the microphone positioning was not perfect. Good thing their brilliant perspectives and engaging conversation topics make up for the sometimes-less-than-ideal audio quality - phew!
It’s here! The first Coffee, Tea, and 3 SLPs podcast episode! 🎉
Tune in to learn about the SLPs as they discuss:
Well, you’ll just have to listen to find out. 🎧

P.S. Correction: the Destiny’s Child song that Brittany references is Lose My Breath (not Lose Yourself). This is important. You should listen to that song right now.
