We want to go beyond providing a space for groundbreaking research but there are no shortcuts to innovation, and there’s no replacement for the knowledge of those behind the progress that we publish. So, to provide a tangible, understandable insight into cutting-edge science that comes straight from the mouth of the researcher, we’ll be sitting down with an author or researcher and talking through their MDPI paper with a focus on what it means for them, and more broadly what it could mean for all of us. Imagine a world where we could uncover the past by listening to music. Well, imagine no more, because archaeomusicology does just that. Dr. Angela Bellia, Senior Researcher at the Institute of Heritage Science, explains how listening to music from different time periods contributes to experiencing places with all of our senses. As well as this, she discusses how technology such as computer-aided modelling is widening the scope of what was once thought possible.

This year for Peer Review Week 2022 we were delighted to have an opportunity to sit down the Jayashree Rajagopalan (Senior Manager of Global Community Engagement for CACTUS) and Danielle Padula (Head of Marketing and Community Development at Scholastica), co-chairs of the Peer Review Week committee. In this fascinating and at-times meta conversation, Stefan Tochev and Unai Vicario ask questions about our guests, the state of peer review, and where things might be heading.

We catch up with Nick King and Professor Aled Jones from the Global Sustainability Institute to think about some of the consequences of pushing our planet and societies beyond their limits, how the world might look when the dust settles, and whether we can prevent the collapse of our increasingly complex systems. As we discuss their 2020 article in Sustainability, An Analysis of the Potential for Formation of ‘Nodes of Persisting Complexity’. You can find the link here and I really encourage you to read it—it’s fascinating, accessible and engaging.
While it’s easy to jump straight to the end to find the winners and losers from Aled and Nick’s research, it’s important that we focus on the system behaviours that they discuss and begin to recognise the complexity of our societies and the long-term impacts of this complexity. It might not grab the headlines, but it might just be the difference between a future we can manage and one that we can’t.

Today on Insight Faster we’re back at the afterparty for the 2021 Global Sustainability Awards. This time it’s with Professor John Elkington. Creator of the ‘Triple Bottom Line’ and now founder and leader of thinktank sustainability thinktank Volans, Professor Elkington has been leading the sustainability for decades. We’ll dive deep into his work with both Volans and the brand new Green Swans Observatory and we’ll discuss his new book Green Swans: The Coming Boom in Regenerative Capitalism. This episode made me really excited for the potential for real sustainable business!

Welcome to Insight Faster, a Podcast by MDPI. This is Episode 1—Anxiety and the Ecological Crisis with Dr Panu Pihkala. Sustainability will be the theme of the rest of our lives; it should’ve been the theme of our lives so far. It affects every single one of us in profoundly different ways. One of the more often inconspicuous and yet equally damaging impacts is the way that it affects everyone’s mental health. Anxiety regarding the ecological crisis is natural, it is after all a serious, global problem, but Eco-Anxiety is notoriously difficulty to characterize. We sat down with Dr Panu Pihkala, a leading interdisciplinary researcher on the topic from the University of Helsinki and author of Anxiety and the Ecological Crisis: An Analysis of Eco and Climate Anxiety in MDPI’s Sustainability journal. The article has since attracted more than 10,000 full-text reads and more than 30 citations. We’ll talk about what Eco-Anxiety is and why it can be both incredibly challenging but also provide opportunities for positive change, whilst touching on the psychology of COVID-19 and how its psychology relates to the psychology of Eco-Anxiety.

Introducing Insight Faster—a podcast by MDPI where we'll be putting the researcher on speaker! We spoke to some of our authors to understand what motivates their research and their experience of conducting it! Join host Jasper Clow as we consider the progress made in the recent years and uncover some worrying future perspectives, but some exciting ones as well!
Series 1 is mostly centred around sustainability, including interviews with authors from the Sustainability journal alongside chats with some of the winners of the World Sustainability Awards and Emerging Sustainability Leader Awards. It's a huge topic, and we won't be able to cover all of it, but we've tried to address some of the issues that you might not have heard about, in conversation with academics who are leading the field. Alongside this, we'll also be speaking to a researcher from the University of Manchester who's been using gestural interfaces for musical composition.
Tune in this time next week (January 12th) as we get started by talking to Dr Panu Pihkala, a researcher at the University of Helsinki and Finland's leading expert on Eco-Anxiety. We'll be exploring how we all navigate our own relationship with the climate crisis, and I promise it's not all bad news.
