On this episode of Purple Glow Pod, we were joined by Katie Lawson, one of the curators at the 2022 Toronto Biennial of Art. Katie talked about the significance of this year’s theme, What Water Knows, the Land Remembers, and how the Biennial repurposes public space in the GTA to engage people in art and the community while exploring underrepresented histories and voices.
Ruckus Women Collective is a group of creators who subvert colonial, capitalist, racist, and patriarchal standards. As members and supporters of queer, BIPOC, disabled, and racialized communities, the Ruckus Women aim to facilitate the sharing and creation of ant-establishment art, dismantling oppressive institutions and empowering those not being given a seat at the table. On this episode of Purple Glow Pod, we talk with Ruckus Women Collective about anti-establishment art and what decolonizing the arts means/looks like.
Art for art, or l’art pour l’art, is a philosophy that originated in France in the early 19th century that suggests the purpose of art is not to serve some higher moral, cultural, or political purpose; rather, the value lies in the artistic pursuit itself. This bohemian slogan inspired a movement advocating that art needs no justification. On this episode, we chatted with Josh Gallina, the artistic director of Bloody Nails Cinema, about creating for the sake of creating and allowing the love of an art form to be reason enough to pursue it.
To kick off season 2 of Purple Glow Pod, we sat down with Shaunt Raffi, the owner of The Oud & the Fuzz, an Armenian cocktail bar and live music venue in Kensington Market. We discussed the importance of physical spaces for musicians in the city, providing opportunities for emerging artists, gatekeeping in the music industry, and how music familiarizes us across cultures.
