The man in our lesson today, Pol Pot, was a Cambodian dictator communist who orchestrated the Cambodian genocide of over two million humans. No one was safe under his leadership. It didn’t matter if you were Christian, non-religious, rich, or poor.
All to create a society based on agriculture that he was hopeful would turn into a fully communist one.
How did he do that? By enslaving as many people as he could and forcing them to work in the fields and farms after he took away all of their worldly possessions.

David Berkowitz, that’s who! He murdered six people and wounded seven others with a gun in New York City in 1977, and it all stemmed from a barking black lab who David believed was the literal Devil.

I first heard about Madame LaLaurie from American Horror Story Coven, my favorite season. Played by Kathy Bates, she gave the character depth and eventually some humanity. There was even a point when I felt sympathy for the character.
The real Delphine deserves no sympathy, though! After researching her for this lesson, I learned that she really was a heartless monster.
It’s no wonder people claimed that she was a demon.
I wanted to learn what was real and what was made up about her crimes, and I’m sad to say most of what you’ve heard was true.
So, let’s see if we can dust off her history and find out how anyone could have been so rotten.

Today’s lesson is about a man you’ve probably never heard of. He is yet another failed dictator who committed countless crimes against humanity and died before he could face judgment, Slobodan Milosevic, The Butcher of the Balkans.
He was the former President of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and, along with other leaders, started a deadly war that I hadn’t even heard of but was a living nightmare for those unfortunate enough to live there.
Genocide, forcible deportation, murder, racial and religious persecution, inhumane acts, imprisonment, torture and extermination. The list of crimes is almost unending, and today, we shall see what we can learn from such a festering, rotten man and turn the evil he spewed into the world into something beneficial to us all.

Some say that everyone is just a product of their upbringing—the grand debate between nature vs. nurture.
We have learned in our past lessons that this is very true. Some of our rotten people seem to have been born bad, while others succumb to their horrible circumstances.
Our Rotten man today, at least to me, seems to be both. He was a man who was born rotten and, because of the trauma that was inflicted upon him, let that rot spread not only throughout his whole identity but into others as well.
He reminds me of that old saying, “One bad apple spoils the bunch,” because he spoiled the lives of so many, and sadly, most of them are lost to history.

On August 8, 1974, Dick Nixon hosted a press conference and gave his resignation speech. It is the only time a president of the United States has resigned, and he did it to keep his remaining secrets hidden.
The next day, President Gerald Ford was sworn into office and pardoned Nixon for all of his crimes. Dick got away scot-free and decided to end his career as what he called a fighter.
President Dick wasn’t the worse leader that we’ve had, but he certainly seemed to be a crook.
I like to blame Dick in part for the normalization of lies and scandals and attempting to cover them up.

You never know what my mirror has in store for us, and today will be Super! When I started learning about our next rotten ruler, suddenly, a bright light fell from the sky and transformed me into a Super History Hero.
The villain today is another rotten ruler, but this time he is from a country that is today still being ruled by a vyalaya sobaka: (flaccid dog.) This one ruled Russia from 1547 to his death in 1584, his name was Ivan, and he was literally known for how Terrible he was.

Now, I see nothing wrong with living for life's pleasures. I am not one to shy away from a good time, but our subject for the lesson today took it to the next level. We can either rule or have a good time. History has shown us that we can’t have both….at least not for long. The Universe doesn’t give with both hands: and the Roman Emperor Caligula is proof and point of that.
Caligula is believed to have had sex with his own sisters, but he also sold them to other men for sex. He would take any other man’s wife and fornicate with her, then go back to the room in front of everyone and loudly brag about what he just did to her.
He only ruled Rome for four years and it seemed that he had a great time while everyone else paid the price. Wash your hands and grab the penicillin, we’re learning all about another Rotten Ruler, Caligula!

I normally pride myself by putting myself in anyone’s shoes, and when I attempted with George, I kept seeing a poor, desperate man willing to do anything to better his own life. What did Mrs. Koch do you say? Well, a number of things. Including being married to a sadistic SS officer and going above and way beyond joining him in his job of overseeing death camps for Hitler. Now, when I say above and beyond, I mean some twisted stuff. For starters, if she liked a prisoner's skin or tattoos. She would have them taken for “special studies,” and they were killed and skinned. Then she would take that skin and either hand-make or force other prisoners to make accessories and home decor out of it. One of her favorites was a handbag she would often carry with her.

We all grew up being told by our loved ones to not talk to strangers, and to never go with them if they try to get you into their car. Some of us may have had a few close calls, but for some unlucky few they did fall prey to the corrupt actions of another. The childlike naivete that nothing bad could actually happen to them, is quickly replaced by the realization that they are in dire trouble. My heart goes out to those poor innocent souls that had to experience that fear at any age, as they come to the realization that their parents won’t be coming to rescue them. For seven-year-old Steven Stayner that was just the case.

“Poisoning her Passion! Jane Toppan confesses to killing thirty-one persons” read the headline on July 22, 1902, from the Clinton Morning Age newspaper. It would go on to describe how a seemingly caring nurse had purposely poisoned her patients and became one of the United States’ first serial killers. Investigators even spoke of her confession to her crimes, stating that “she has told of the death of her victims as if she were talking about a summer picnic where she enjoyed herself, of the fiendish subtlety she employed in ending human lives. The patience she maintained during the paroxysm’s proceeding dissolution. The exuberance and joy that came to her as she watched their eyelids press down. No ghost has come to her in the midnight hours to disturb her dreams; no smarting of conscious visited her unnatural brain that excited either tears or sorrow”.

He would make a living off the sufferings of others by “selling” them portions of major landmarks throughout New York City. Landmarks such as the Brooklynn Bridge, Ulysses’ S. Grant’s Tomb, and whatever else he could swindle someone with.
