Have you ever had an invasive plant problem? Were you not sure what to do? In this episode we call in a few experts to answer common questions we receive from gardeners, land managers, and lakefront property owners.
Questions we answer:
- I built some new flower beds a couple of years ago but have recently noticed a few new plants growing in it. I friend recently told me she thinks these are Chinese Crown orchids. Where did these come from and what should I do?
- I have a 10 acre pasture that is partially wooded, but I have started getting cogongrass moving in. Can you tell me what I need to do to get rid of it? And, are there any state programs to help pay for the removal?
- I live on a lake in South Florida and have my own personal dock onto the water. The cattails have started getting pretty bad. They were pretty at first but now they’ve grown so much I can’t even get my kayak into the water. Can someone remove them? I miss being out on my kayak!

In this episode, we are joined by FWC Fish and Wildlife Research Institute Section Leader Jason Dotson. As a life-long angler, Dotson grew up on the fishing the Potomac River and found a love for water systems and the life within them. After studying at Virginia Tech, he moved to Florida to get his master's degree in fisheries science (and it didn't hurt that Florida is also the Bass Fishing Capital of the World). Now, as FWC FWRI Section Leader, Dotson works to research on everything from ecosystem health, fish populations, and everything in between.
In this discussion, Dotson shares his experience and thoughts about hydrilla (Hydrilla verticillata) from the perspective of an angler and a biologist.

Dr. Deah Lieurance joins us to talk about the UF/IFAS Assessment of Non-native Plants, how it can be used, and how we discuss the risk of nonnative plants. Dr. Lieurance is an extension scientist in the UF/IFAS Agronomy department. In her current role, she coordinates the UF/IFAS Assessment of Non-native Plants in Florida's Natural Areas, a program that provides the status and risk of invasion for nonnative plant species.

In the late 1880s or early 1890s, an aquatic plant known as water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) was introduced to Florida. What seemed to be a pleasant plant for water gardens quickly turned into a menace that overwhelmed the St. Johns River. In this mini-series, we will explore the history of how water hyacinth entered Florida and the strides that have been taken to manage this plant's growth.
