This illustration demonstrates the so-called vowel trapeze with English vowels and the position of these vowels in the oral cavity.

How can I warm up my belt voice? Which exercises are useful to prepare my voice for belting? How high and how low should I sing to train my belt voice? How can I prepare my voice for songs that need a mix-belt sound?

Today, I am happy to propose you warm-up exercises for your belt voice.

It is the primary goal of a belter to avoid uniformity and to keep its individual sound.

The range of a typical low-belt voice reaches from the tone A below middle C up to A, B flat, or B above middle C, sometimes up to D above the high C.

A singer who can easily produce the voice’s loudest tone in this range and is able to keep the belt sound at least up to B above middle C or even the high C, needs to be identified as a low-belt voice

Any questions concerning the low-belt voice?

Just send an email to chrbonin@icloud.com and you will get help

Today, I would like to explain and demonstrate the Pop Belt Sound of Christina Aguilera. Most singers try to copy Christina´s sound instead of analyzing what she’s doing and finding a personal way to do the same.

Let´s take a closer look at her sound. To discover that sound for your voice, train these tricks with a simple song you know very well or with the exercises in my book "Belt Voice Training" you can order on my website www.christinbonin.com

Looking at some great belters while live singing, you might recognize that they all have a very expressive face. Sometimes, it looks like they would like to bite you with their tones!

Their facial expression has a very good reason because without activating certain muscles in your face, you cannot reach a good voice placement.

With the following exercises, you can train to get the right belt mouth position and the so-called “singer’s smile.”

The vowel trapeze with English vowels in my book "Belt Voice Training – Singing with a Belting Voice,” shows you the position of English vowels in the oral cavity.

Even though his recordings sound great, during live shows, Freddie Mercury sometimes has to cut short the high note because of the forward pushed and cramped jaw. High voices do not like “u.” You can check all vowel positions by looking at the vowel-trapeze in my book Belt Voice Training.

To reach the original version is not as easy as it might look like. The lead vocal is very demanding. One of Freddie’s most recognized live performances took place at the LIVE AID concert at Wembley Stadium, London in 1985.

The much sought-after belt voice for musical theatre and pop music in general, is the mix-belt voice. It is also the most difficult to achieve.

The singer predestinated to be a mix-belt can produce strong tones in the lower part and the higher part of the voice’s range, but the change from the darker voice color to a brighter voice color is delicate.

View Details

In this Podcast Episode, I would like to show you a very efficient exercise to train your mix belt voice.

Train your mix belt with this exercise consequently and you will get incredible results!

Different examples and a piano playback for your personal training are available on christinbonin.com

Even though you might be happy to have reached the full chest voice sound by singing down the scale with the exercise of my last podcast episode, you will need to sing up again and to reach higher notes with exactly the same sound. If you like to listen to some examples or to train with a piano playback, you can download this exercise HERE.

View Details

By singing down the scale there is always the danger of dropping abruptly into the chest voice sound and losing vocal control. That provokes not only increasing the existing passaggio problem between middle voice and chest voice but even to fall into a deep hole by trying to make impressive dark sounds, making it impossible for us to sing up again.

View Details

Just as in the voice placement exercise, we must stretch the abdominal wall to intensify the support systematically while singing up higher and higher. That exercise does not only enable you to activate your overtones and your highest notes but also to sing these notes with maximum power, energy, and sound.

View Details

We stand straight with slightly separated legs (about a foot-length apart), relaxed in the knees. After bending forward and exhaling, we immediately start to inhale while we straighten up slowly to an upright position, as we would like to roll up our spine, starting with the lowest vertebra. It is a natural human reflex to gasp for air immediately when you feel being out of air. That is the reason why we have to be careful now to do that exercise correctly.

View Details

The term support is perhaps the most misunderstood expression in vocal technique. Building up your physical condition, the strength of your abdominal muscles, and your body in general, will help you to become a better singer with a stronger voice.

View Details

Through that exercise, we learn to use the breathing muscles separately from the abdominal muscles. You will get the most simple and efficient explanation for your voice support.

View Details

We speak in general about high and low breathing or respectively about the chest- and abdominal breathing. In the following exercise, you will learn to concentrate on the muscles which need training without pushing anywhere else in the body seemingly bringing us more strength. A minimal but correct muscle impulse brings better and faster progress than falsely used energy.
