Prof holds a Ph.D. in Political Studies from University of Western Cape, a Master degree in Development Studies from Leeds University in the UK. He is the former Director of Political Affairs in the African Union Commission (2013-2021) and he serves as in the board of directors for Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR) in Johannesburg.

She completed her bachelor’s degree and honours in Crop and Soil Science at the University of Fort Hare, she then completed her thesis in Uganda.

We take a dive into Kenyan politics to discuss the recent youth led political demonstrations. Young people continue to be involved in politics. While such political conversations are a common occurrence, they are taking place within larger spaces. Virtual spaces have become the kinds of spaces where policy and traditional power structures are challenged and grappled with. Such trends have not only occurred in Kenya but generally spread throughout the continent. As the youngest continent, Africa has had many youth-led movements. What is common is the social media posting, organizing, sharing, chanting and marching of the youth.
While social media continues to play a huge role in amplifying social, economic and political issues and grievances across the globe, what is significant is its independent role in both democratic and totalitarian governments. With the possibilities of freedoms of speech, social media helps in coordinating protests and gives a voice to unpopular views.

lecturer at the School of Management, IT, and Governance, UKZN. He qualified with a Masters
Degree in Development Studies, where he specialized in development economics and public

Joining us for this episode is Sharon Ekambaram. Sharon is a human rights activist and has been involved in the struggle for social justice through her work. She was one of the founding members of the Treatment Action Campaign in the struggle for affordable treatment for people living with HIV and AIDS, initially targeting big pharma and later against AIDS denialism of the South African government. She then took up a position as Project Head to establish the Chris Hani Institute located at COSATU House. She worked for the international medical humanitarian organisation- Doctors Without Borders and was the founding, Director. She is current head of the Refugee and Migrant Rights Programme at Lawyers for Human Rights [LHR] and a member of Kopanang Africa Against Xenophobia [KAAX].
In this episode we are joined by Cynthia Chigwenya from the Konrad Adenaur Stiftung and African Union Youth Ambassador. Cynthia is a political researcher and pracademic with experience in international policymaking. Her advocacy is grounded in research, having served at think tanks, and published on topical issues including, Europe-Africa relations, transcontinental infrastructure and climate finance in EMEs. She holds a B.Soc.Sci in Criminology and International Studies, a BA (Hons) and MA in Development Studies and an MPhil in Social Policy. Cynthia specialised on transitional justice and reconstruction in post-genocide Rwanda and conflict mediation in South Sudan. She is a TEDx speaker, recognised as a MIPAD Global 100 under 40 awardee in politics and governance; and has spoken at various symposia, including the EU-AU Summit and the BRICS Roundtable Dialogue on financing clean technologies. In May 2023, she briefed the 9315th Meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on futureproofing trust for peacebuilding. Cynthia has worked with several organisations promoting SDGs and the Agenda 2063 in Africa, she currently serves as the African Union’s Youth Ambassador for Peace for Southern Africa and works as a Programme Coordinator for Political Dialogue in Sub-Saharan Africa at Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung. She has previously held research positions in the South African Parliament and at the National Genocide Commission in Rwanda.

Diana is a young and dynamic woman from Chad that was born in Cote d’Ivoire and raised in Ethiopia, Rwanda, France and South Africa where she currently works for the African Peer Review Mechanism as a researcher and country coordinator.With a background in Marketing and Management, Diana has started up a career in the private sector before joining the public and developmental sector. She is passionate about all things communication and technology. She is also an advocate for gender equality as well as Human trafficking and is a member of the Community Voices for Peace Pluralism-Africa and the A21 organisation which works towards abolishing modern-day slavery.
Joining us for this episode is Resident Representive, Gregor Jaecke from KAS South Africa. From January 2019 to April 2022, Gregor Jaecke was the Head of the Syria/Iraq-Office of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) based in Beirut, Lebanon. Previously, he was posted to Kenya to lead the EU-funded KAS program “Strengthening the capacities of state and non-state actors for effective decentralized governance” (2015-2017) and to the Democratic Republic of Congo to head the foundation’s country project and a project on food security (2016-2018). Jaecke studied Public Policy and Management at the University of Konstanz, Germany. Before joining the foundation, he was General Manager and Campaign Manager of the CDU Hamburg and was already working for KAS as an expert for various short-term projects.

Harber most recent book is Southern African Muckraking (Jacana, 2018). He wrote Diepsloot (Jonathan Ball, 2011), The Gorilla in the Room (Mampoer Shorts, 2013) and co edited the first two editions of The A–Z of South African Politics (Penguin, 1994/6).

Mr Jacob Stensdal has i.a. previously held the positions of Political and Press Advisor at Invest in Denmark and Senior Advisor on Mashrek in the Middle East and North Africa Department in Copenhagen. He was also previously posted as special advisor on development and trade to the Danish Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, and has been working with the Danish Embassy and the Deepening Democracy Programme in Uganda.

David Kabwa is currently a student at the University of Pretoria pursuing a Master’s Degree in Diplomatic Studies under the Centre For Mediation in Africa. He is currently serving as the Country Ambassador for South Africa to the UNITE 2030 Initiative. Moreover, he is an inaugural member of the African Union Youth For Transitional Justice (AY4TJ) continental platform where he was trained as a youth expert in the African Union Transitional Justice Policy (AUTJP) by the AU Department For Political Affairs, Peace and Security. He has also recently been appointed to the board of the America Africa Entrepreneurship and Investment Forum (AAEIF). In 2019, he was elected as the Prime Minister for the Commonwealth Youth Parliament. He was the first African elected to this position where he would oversee the legislative affairs of young people across 54 countries. He also served for two consecutive terms as the Student Representative Council President of the University of Pretoria as an independent where he would oversee 60 000 students across seven campuses. He was the first President to complete terms as an independent. Mr Kabwa has also served as the Chairperson of Second Commission in the Gauteng Youth Sector Parliament. He has also been inducted into the Mail & Guardian Top 200 Young South Africans and the Junior Chamber International Top 10 Outstanding Young Persons In South Africa in the category of politics. In 2021, he was an augural recipient of the Hope Givers Foundation in Association with Brand South Africa and the National Lotteries Commission Raising Legends Award in the category Academia, Advocacy and Leadership for work done to combat Gender-Based Violence through the Boy-Child Initiative.

Zainab Olaitan is a PhD candidate in the department of political sciences, University of Pretoria where she is researching the impact of gender quotas on the substantive representation of women in African politics. She obtained her first degree in Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Political Science with First class honours from the University of Lagos. Zainab completed her second degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics Honors at the University of Cape Town as a 2018 Mandela Rhodes Scholar. In 2019, she got the MasterCard foundation scholarship to complete a master’s degree in Political Sciences at the University of Pretoria. In 2022, she was awarded the Margaret McNamara Education Grant for her impactful research work on women and children. Zainab is an avid researcher with published articles in local and international journals" and is keenly interested in contributing to research on gender and representation, conflict and peace studies and political thought.

In this episode, Dr Sithembile Mbete joins us to speak about populism in the era of democratic decline.
Sithembile is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Political Sciences at the University of Pretoria where she teaches international relations and South African politics and an Associate Fellow of the Centre for Governance Innovation. She is also a visiting researcher at the African Leadership Centre at King’s College London. She has a DPhil in International Relations from the University of Pretoria. She completed her undergraduate, honours and masters degrees at the University of Cape Town. In 2014 she was a visiting scholar at the Department of Political Science and Balsillie School of International Affairs at the University of Waterloo in Canada.Sithembile has done research, consulting, speaking and facilitation work for organisations including Teneo Intelligence, Liberty, Electoral Institute of Southern Africa, Rand Merchant Bank (RMB), ABSA, Standard Bank and Edelman South Africa. She has done work for the South African Parliament, several South African government departments, the United Nations Human Rights Council and several foreign embassies in South Africa. She is a 2019 OSF-SA Democracy Fellow for research on the South African electoral system. She comments frequently in the media on a range of issues in South African politics. She comments frequently in the media on a range of issues in South African politics. She is Kaya FM’s resident political analyst and has a regular slot on David o’Sullivan’s breakfast show. Sithembile has been part of eNCA’s team of analysts for the ANC’s 2017 elective conference, the State of the Nation Address in 2018 and 2019, and the 2019 National and Provincial election. Sithembile joined the University of Pretoria from The Presidency of South Africa where she was a researcher in the secretariat of the National Planning Commission. She contributed to the drafting of the National Development Plan in the areas of public service reform, anti-corruption policy and community safety.
In this episode, Ms Heather Thuynsma joins to discuss South Africa's 28 year democratic journey.
Heather Thuynsma holds a BA and a BA Honours from the University of the
Witwatersrand, received her MA in applied politics from the University of Akron
(Ohio, USA), and attended the Women’s Campaign School at the Yale Law School to
complete her specialisation in fundraising and political campaign strategy. She has
spent 30 years working in the South African and US non-profit sectors managing
fundraising, policy analysis and media relations. She worked as a specialist election
monitor during South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994, has coordinated and
fundraised for political campaigns at various levels of government in the State of
Ohio, and has taught political behaviour, campaign management, fundraising
strategy, and civic and human rights education in both the US and South Africa.
Ms Thuynsma has published articles on human rights education for the United
Nations and on South Africa’s political campaigns and electoral strategy for the
Electoral Institute of South Africa. She is currently the Communications Manager for
the Faculty of Humanities but also supervises postgraduate students and co-teaches
the Honours-level course on Comparative Politics, that incorporates The Global
Classroom, in the Department of Political Sciences. This postgraduate course won
the Vice-Chancellor (2019) and the Faculty of Humanities’ (2018) Teaching and
Learning awards.
Ms Thuynsma has been a contributing editor of three book-length publications: Brittle
Democracies: Comparing Politics in Anglophone Africa; Political Parties in South
Africa: Do they Undermine or Underpin Democracy?, and, Public Opinion and
Interest Group Politics: South Africa’s Missing Links? And with Prof Vasu Reddy
(Dean: Faculty of Humanities) has co-edited the monograph The Undiscovered
Country: Essays in Honour of Maxi Schoeman.
Ms Thuynsma has presented papers at several international conferences and,
before joining the Faculty as its Communications Manager, advised political parties
and advocacy groups in Angola, Cote D’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo,
Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Senegal, South
Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, the US, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
