Last week we interview two of our NZ Ahead members, Floss and Dez, who left the UK on a small yacht and sailed (for three years) to New Zealand.
The family are now happy and settled, and the kids (who are now 16 and 14) are in school.

- Why don’t gifted kids simply be given more homework/challenges at school?
- Do all schools in New Zealand offer a gifted programme?
- Is the programme offered to overseas students and /or kids on a visa or must you be a resident of NZ?
- Do teachers have to have any extra qualifications to be T&G teacher?
- Do the kids come out with extra credits/or more chance of getting into college because they have been through this programme?
- How do you decide which kids get accepted into the programme and which don’t?
- What does a typical day in a gifted programme classroom look like?
- Is it for the parents to flag up that their child is T&G or is that the job of a teacher or other professional?
- Are there any areas of the country that were better able to accommodate both the challenging parts of giftedness and the parts that need a bit more rigour?
- For kids that are mildly gifted, would you recommend a public school or private school - this stems from a US perspective.
- What’s the most challenging/best part of your job?

Being a Nurse in New Zealand. Show Notes In this week's show, Maile, Victoria and Katie discuss:
- General environment - including patient ratios, support staff, the attitude of doctors to nurses, attitudes of families and patients
- Different slang/medical terms
- Schedules/rosters
- Salary, working with unions. Also holidays, hours worked, differential pay
- Government-run healthcare - less money to go around than private run, impacts on equipment, charting (still a lot of paper charting), lack of Pyxis, waits for tests if not in the hospital.
- Training of nurses and other staff, for example, house officers, registrars, consultants, and PDRP
- How accepted are tattoos, piercings, and unnatural hair colours for nurses?
- How different is the hiring process? How are the interviews conducted?
- Did anyone have a difficult time with the registration process that required you to submit an appeal?
- How different are their certifications (e.g. ACLS, BLS, PALS, etc.)?
- Since they have universal health care, does that mean that have the same policy and procedures across all public hospitals or is it still unit/hospital-specific? Is there a shared nursing model across all hospitals? I am completely ignorant of the day to day operations of socialized medicine
- What is their leadership structure like for nurses? I'm assuming they have other names for charge nurses, clinical managers, chief nursing officers, etc.
- Do they support nursing advancement? Is there tuition reimbursement for post-graduate education?
- Is the patient at the centre of the care?
- How are inpatient rounds typically conducted? Is nursing involved and other disciplines involved?
- Are there social workers and case managers?
- Do healthcare workers generally seem happy in NZ?

A little back story... Last week I received an email from a guy. It said: 'I want to make the move to NZ but to be honest, there are so many fears that hold me back from pursuing my adventure, I can't ever see myself making it.'
I am very grateful to that man for sending me that email as it gave me the idea for this week's show. And hopefully, he will go on to listen to this show and realise that he is not alone.

Show Notes: How We Met Brian and Maile Last year, Maile had emailed me to say that she was thinking of moving to New Zealand and could I put her in touch with any other nurses who were doing the same.
Back then, we hadn't started the private New Zealand community that we now have, but I emailed Maile back and told her that I was about to do a podcast interview with Katie, a nurse who was in the process of moving to Dunedin.
A month or so later, when Brian and I created our NZ Ahead Membership Package (Formerly Moving to and Living in New Zealand Package), I contacted Maile and Brian and asked them if they'd like to join. They did and the rest is history!
A few months later Maile and Brian moved to Dunedin and in December 2021 Brian and I flew down to spend a few days with them.
The Importance of surrounding Yourself With like-minded People. Maile is a valuable and very treasured member of our private community (that we affectionately call the NZ Slackers!). The help that she offers to new arrivals and those thinking of moving to the country is priceless.
Maile goes that extra mile to help people (she has just helped Emil, a nurse from the Netherlands, land a job in the same hospital as her, he and his family will move here in a few months!). It is so very exciting to watch as people come together and help each other realise their common dream of moving to New Zealand.

Show Notes: Last week, when I received an email from a listener from the Middle East. (The fact that we have people listening to us from the middle east blows my mind with excitement but that is a different story). Here is a snippet of what it said:
"One-second thing is the reason why you guys decided to move abroad. I am from the middle east so everybody wants to move away from here. It is really interesting for me to listen to a westerner moving abroad".
After reading this email it suddenly struck me. How one person's ideal country is another person's prison. Maybe prison is a tad harsh but it is late at night when I'm writing this and I can't think of the correct word so let's stick with that.
Why WOULD anyone want to emigrate from the UK? And while we're at it, why would anyone want to leave New Zealand and live in Australia or England? Why on earth would anyone consider leaving beautiful, gorgeous France to live in America?
But they do. Every single day.

I’m only a trainee teacher in the UK so I won't have my credentials by the time we move. I do however have a learning and teaching foundation degree (equivalent to level 6 on the NZQA). What are the chances of me getting work within the education system while I hopefully finish off my teacher training in New Zealand?
From a parent standpoint- do kids get homework at primary level, how often and when are they assessed?
How structured is the school day/classroom, how much freedom do the kids have?
Do they learn about wellbeing, mental health, citizenship, sex and relationship education and when?
What support is there for pupils who are struggling, what stretch is there for able pupils?
How (and how often) do schools communicate with parents?
From a teacher standpoint - can you reasonably do your job within the working week or is it expected you will do many hours more?
Is CPD (continuous professional development) encouraged/supported, are NZ schools collaborative places to work?
Are teachers trusted and respected as professionals?
What's the relationship like with parents?
What are the frustrations and what are the best bits?
How similar are schools - are they all variations on a theme, or do they all have their own "personality" so to speak?
What's the resource situation - do schools provide all the resources, or are the staff expected to?
Are NZ schools (I guess I'm thinking of high schools here really) cliquey for the pupils, or are they integrated and accepting?
What do teachers do to help settle immigrant children?
What are the typical differences between low and high decile schools in New Zealand?

What Makes New Zealand Food So Special? Like everything else in New Zealand, the food is rather underrated.
Which is a shame as it leads people to believe that the New Zealand food is either boring and not worth mentioning, or is so weird that it must only be eaten by people who reside in mud huts and cook dinosaur eggs. (One of the many misconceptions about New Zealand).
People in our private New Zealand community will often ask, is the food in New Zealand better?
That's a tricky one. It depends where you come from and what you class as better. I am from England and although this doesn't apply to all food, I'll stick my neck out and say that the majority of New Zealand food is waaay better than the UK.

Show Notes: Yesterday I was asked by a member of our private community, 'Is the food in New Zealand better?'
While this is a huge topic (and those who know me will have probably guessed my answer), I said it would depend on where you are comparing it to. Compared to the UK, yes, I think that the food in New Zealand is better. It tastes more 'real'.
Don't ask me to define real because I can't. Sorry. Let's just say it hits a different spot on the taste buds.
After talking to this community member for a while I discovered her reason for asking the above question. She had severe food allergies and was trying to gauge what life in New Zealand would look like.
In this week's show, I talk to Jen Morris. Jen is from the Youtube channel, A Thousand Words. She emigrated to New Zealand over a decade ago and she has various food intolerances and allergies that she lives with.

Welcome! This is the very first episode of NZ Ahead, the one-stop podcast for moving to and living in New Zealand.
We are your hosts, Liz and Brian, a husband and wife who, along with our two children (Sonny and Tessa), moved to New Zealand from England in 2009.
We have travelled all over New Zealand but our home is in Taranaki, on the West Coast of the North Island. We live on top of a hill under a dormant volcano. We like to keep life interesting. Our favourite thing in the world (apart from red wine which we also can't get enough of) is to share everything we can about moving to New Zealand. So that we can help others who are thinking of making this wonderful country their home.
When Brian and I made the big move over a decade ago we found it very difficult to find real answers to the questions and concerns we had about New Zealand. And let's face it, there are plenty of them. Concerns I mean. Taking your family to the other side of the world is no walk in the park! That is why we made it our mission to arm new wanna-be-kiwis with as much information as possible. To share real life, down to earth information about what New Zealand has to offer. Meaning that you get to decide if this is the place for you.
