Listen as we speak with Megan Mikkelsen from Detox by Design about decreasing the toxins in our homes and the little steps we can take to improve our health. Some examples of questions we will dive into are:
Why should we think about the products we bring into the home?
Why can't we trust marketing claims?
What ingredients should we look out for?
What is greenwashing and how to spot it.
A little about Megan:
“Health, the environment, and creating beauty in interiors have been my top interests since I was a teen. I went on to get my Masters of Public Health, had a 15+ year career in health education and made a mid-life switch to interior design. The blend of creating beautiful, happy, AND healthy homes is where my true passion lies.
When I become a mom, I dove head first into making our home healthier. I wanted to create a healthy and happy home for our family. Raising my daughters in an environment with minimal toxins - that’s the crux of my “why”. We live in a word of too much knowledge and it can be completely overwhelming to decipher what is truly healthy and green. At the same time we want to create comfortable and beautiful spaces at home. That’s why I created Detox by Design - to share toxin-free living strategies, providing the knowledge you need to make safer choices for your family while creating a beautiful home at the same time.
I share tips on how to easily and quickly detox and create beauty at home through my podcast Toxin-Free Talk. I also share tips in my Facebook group, Toxin-Free Talk, and on Instagram. I also share weekly tips in my email newsletter.”

Watch our podcast episode where Dr. Jess takes you through a tour of her organic summer garden and shares some recipes with you for using that summer garden to include in an anti-inflammatory diet. Also, watch as Dr. Bobbie shares her summertime skin care routine while remaining toxin-free with her choices.
Dr. Bobbie’s Skin care Products:
Crunchi’s Sunlight Daily Sunscreen: Crunchi Sunlight
Crunchi’s Daylight Moisturizer: Crunchi Daylight Moisturizer
Dr. Jess’s Recipes in the Episode:
Jamu Juice (Tumeric Ginger Drink)
Inspired by an Indonesian natural remedy “Jamu”, this turmeric ginger boost is the perfect anti-inflammatory drink.
125 grams fresh turmeric or approximately 1 cup roughly chopped
20 grams fresh ginger or approximately 1 finger sized piece
4 cups coconut water
1 lemon juiced
2 Tbsps honey or other sweetener
A pinch of black pepper
Elderberry Ginger Tea
2 cups water
2 Tbsps Fresh or Dried Elderberries
1 cinnamon stick
½ Sliced lemon
1 thumb sized piece of fresh ginger chopped
Tips
The elderberry tea gets deeper and darker in color the longer you boil it. If you prefer a lighter colored tea, just reduce the time on the stove by 5 minutes.
You can also add lemon and ginger.
Patty’s Fountain of Youth Water
8-10 cups of filtered water
1 tsp raw grated ginger
½ cucumber, thinly sliced
1 lemon, thinly sliced
12-15 fresh mint leaves
Combine ingredients in a large pitcher and let sit refrigerated overnight.
Enjoy the next day!
Another Option
Take all ingredients and blend in a food processor or blender.
Let everything sit in the water for a couple of hours.
Strain the mixture to get a fresh taste. Enjoy.
You can also put the pulp in ice cube trays and freeze.
Use the frozen pulp cubes in your next glass of water.
