The Strong Black Woman stereotype as defined by scholars, is characterised by 3 components: emotional resilience,  fierce independence, and a constant and always on-call care for others.

We were socialised to be this woman because our mothers and grand mothers embodied her so well. As we became women, we knew, intuitively, that we would also have to be 'strong' if we were to survive the character development that was surely coming our way.

And so we defined ourselves as such, and in doing so became superhuman (we could do it all) and sub human (we could withstand as much abuse and mistreatment as the perpetrators could unleash, because we were strong enough to take it).

And herein was the liability: this cloying definition denied us of a full human experience. We were either/or and anything in between was frowned upon.

But was it always a bad thing? Did we sometimes use it to our advantage?

We delve into this question and more as we share our personal experiences and how we came to a point of redefining the word 'strong.'

But there is another way of separating; one that does not involve the drama and destruction.

In this episode, we talk about conscious uncoupling which simply defined, means making the choice to separate amicably.
