The Centre for Family Initiatives is the educational programming branch at Pine River Institute. CFI@PRI hopes to work with families like to reduce the stigma of talking about mental health. Through our podcasts, we hope to share helpful advice, stories, and strategies for promoting mental wellness.

On February 17th, 2022 Pine River Institute's Centre for Family Initiatives hosted representatives from Jack.org and Kids Help Phone. This webinar was an opportunity for older youth (ages 12+) and any adults who support them to come together and ask questions about mental health, addictive behaviours, and surviving the pandemic together. Our panel of youth advisors and mental health experts weighed in on what’s on the minds of Canadians during these difficult times.

Amanda Young (she/her) is a Child and Youth Counsellor with over 14 years of experience working with children and youth. Amanda began her career as a high school educator and has since dedicated her career to working with youth experiencing addictions and mental health concerns in a variety of community and hospital programs in Toronto, ON. Amanda currently works with patients and families navigating crisis mental health and eating disorders. Amanda's approach to treatment involves a variety of evidence-based methodologies alongside humour and good rapport building. When she isn't working with youth at home, she's spending time with her husband and twin toddlers. Amanda is currently completing a Master in Social Work.

Dr. Reedy will present a formula for increasing resiliency in our children. Using attachment theory, we learn how a parent’s self-awareness and psychological work increase their ability to provide children with a secure base and Self-image. This base is the foundation for the development of a healthy Self. Parents must change the goal from raising “good” and “successful” children to raising health Selves. Dr. Reedy with talk about how parents exploration their own childhood and traumas impacts future generations. Topics will include parental anxiety, definitions of Self for parents and children, and how common myths in parenting need to be reconsidered.

In this podcast – “Post-Pandemic Anxiety” – Centre for Family Initiatives Director Amanda Lamb is joined by Dr. Rob Meeder. Dr. Meeder is a Pediatrician at Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care where he is the Medical Director of the Family, Child and Youth Mental Health program. He has a practice devoted to pediatric mental health and behaviours. As the supporting organization for the Central Ontario Regional OHT for Specialized Populations, Waypoint has been involved in regional planning and clinical innovation for children and youth mental health care. Dr. Meeder completed his medical education at McMaster University and Pediatric residency at Western University. He is Adjunct Professor at Western University and Assistant Clinical Professor (Adjunct) at McMaster University. He is also the co-host of the Smart Family Podcast where he interviews experts in the area of parenting, family relationships and mental health.
