Summer is sure flying by way too quickly, and I can’t believe it is already almost August. This means I have worked at the Sandhills Cattle Association for almost a whole year, and what a blast it has been! I love my job here as Outreach Coordinator, and I can’t wait to grow more in this position and provide more benefits for you, fellow Sandhillers!

Our next few upcoming events include our EP&C Contest Banquet on August 19th, 2022, at 6 pm at the Cast Iron Bar & Grille in Stuart, NE. At this banquet, we will go into depth about the contest, and the winners of each category will receive their championship buckles! Everyone is welcome to attend this banquet, so please let us know if you would like to come! RSVP is required for this event as we are going to have an amazing prime rib dinner!

Next up in September, we will hold our 3rd annual fall feeder calf preview! Along with the Cow/Calf Council of the NR Cattlemen’s and the Sandhill’s Affiliate of the NE Cattlemen’s, we will take you along to tour the best ranches in the sandhills. This year our location will be around Merriman, NE, and it will be a one-day event on September 22nd! More information and RSVP information will be available to you all very soon!

Hey everyone, it's Maddie Lamb with the Sandhills Cattle Association with your weekly update of the Sandhills Cattle News.

On June 29, we held our very first Steers for Students Program at Husker Meats, LLC., in Ainsworth, Nebraska. With lots of help from Jim Pinney, owner of Husker Meats LLC, Nicolas Herrera Ph.D. Student at UNL, Adam Wegner with the Nebraska Beef Council, and of course our calf donors, Craig & Katie O'Kief – Walking X Ranch of Woodlake, NE, Matt & Kristina Blackford – Blackford Ranch of Thedford, NE, Atkinson Livestock – Wes Kilmurry of Atkinson, NE, and Greg & Jolee Nielsen – Nielsen Swan Valley Ranch of Gordon, NE, we had a successful first year of our program! Which means everyone gets beef!

Here is a quick background of what our new program entails. 'Steers for Students' program is our unique educational program geared toward the youth of the Sandhills. This program was developed by Elysabeth Kierl, former SCA Executive Director, and myself, Maddie Lamb, SCA Outreach Coordinator. Elysabeth felt a need to help educate the youth of the Sandhills about beef production and provide them with more sustainable food for their lunches, so we figured out a way to do that. Elysabeth dedicated a lot of time to this program, working out the logistics of everything, and without Jim Pinney's help and cooperation, this wouldn't have been possible! The calves donated to the program were penned with the other calves during the 2022 Educational, Performance, and Carcass Contest at Cottonwood Feeders in Stuart, NE. Their donors received all the calf's data during the contest. After the contest, the 'Steers for Students' calves were then taken to Husker Meats LLC on June 27. We invited the producers of the calves and students and teachers from Gordon, Valentine, Atkinson, and Thedford to learn about the final stages in beef production, from the feedlot to their plate. The public schools that the donors chose, Thedford, Atkinson, Valentine, and Gordon, will receive the donated beef for their school lunch programs at no cost! And to make this program even better, the ranchers that donated calves received half of the primal cuts, and the Sandhills Cattle Association received the other half for future events that will be held. We think this program is a win-win situation for everyone, and we hope to continue improving it and growing it in the future!

Our first 'Steers for Students' program officially started at about 8:30am on June 29 at Husker Meats LLC. While getting ready for the students to arrive. Nicolas Herrera, Jim Pinney, and myself were all on Twister Radio that morning and gave a quick talk about the program, and what we would learn that day—shortly after that, our first group of students and producers arrived! We started by getting our protective gear, including hair nets, beard nets, and jackets. Once the group was ready, we headed over to the harvest floor portion of the building. Jim Pinney walked us through the process of harvesting animals and how cautious and humane they are to the animals that come in. Jim prides his plant on its humane animal handling, clean environment, and the fact that they are also Federally Inspected.

After Jim was done with his presentation, we then went over to the trimming and packing floor. We went over how & why the product is packaged and labeled in specific ways, why inspection is so valuable, the equipment used, and the proper storage and ventilation of carcasses and packaged meats. Then Jim's employees brought out Wes Kilmurry's steer carcass to demonstrate how they break down a carcass. Nicolas Herrera went through each part of the animal, explained what muscles they were and how they work, and gave us many scientific explanations and things to think about. Jim broke down the beef primal cuts for us, such as Chuck, Loin, Full Ribs, Short Ribs, Ro

Hey everyone, it's Maddie Lamb with the Sandhills Cattle Association with your weekly update of the Sandhills Cattle News.

Just one week is left until our Steers For Students Program! Steers for Students is a new educational program geared toward educating the youth of the Sandhills about the final stages in beef production, from feedlot to plate. This program will allow students an educational opportunity to evaluate and grade carcasses of locally grown beef, observe how a packing plant operates, and supply their schools with delicious Sandhills beef for the upcoming school year! The program will start at 9 am on June 29th, 2022, at Husker Meats, LLC, in Ainsworth, NE. If you would like to join us to learn about processing, carcass evaluation, and more, please reach out to the office at 402-376-2310!

Our EP&C Contest calves will be leaving Cottonwood Feeders and heading to the packing plant in two weeks already. We will be working hard to get the data ready and out to our calf owners as soon as we possibly can. This has been a great contest so far and we are excited to see which calves will come out on top! Then we will hold our EP&C Contest Banquet on August 19, 2022, at the Cast Iron Bar & Grille in Stuart, NE, to say thanks to Nate Dvorak and the other staff at Cottonwood Feeders and to announce which calves won each category.

One more week until our Ranch Dad's Photo Contest deadline! Be sure to recognize those special father figures in your life this year and submit your pictures on our website, or you can find the link on our Facebook page!! The deadline for this contest will be June 27 and our winners will be announced on July 1. And a huge thank you to our lockers supporting this great contest, Husker Meats of Ainsworth, NE. 402 Beef Co. of Bristow, NE, and Valentine Locker here in Valentine, NE. Call them at any time for any of your butcher or meat needs!

Hey everyone, it's Maddie Lamb with the Sandhills Cattle Association with your weekly update of the Sandhills Cattle News.

Wow, these last two weeks flew by! I am glad to have another convention done and looking forward to a nice relaxed summer catching up on things here at the office. In case you already didn't know, our executive director Elizabeth Kierl has left us to go on to another position at the game fish and parks department in Pierre, SD. Her time here was greatly appreciated, but this means we are looking for a new executive director! This is a full-time (40 hours per week) position that can be fast-paced with multiple ongoing projects and deadlines. The Executive Director works with the Board of Directors and members to achieve the objectives of the Sandhills Cattle Association to promote the cattle and resources of the Sandhills through education, marketing, communications, and unique member services. Salaried position with flexible hours including sick leave, vacation, and paid holiday. Requires some overnight travel from time to time. Background in agriculture desired. Interviews are starting to be held next week, so be sure to hurry and apply on our website!

Our 83rd annual convention and trade show was held on May 26 & 27th, and it was a blast over in Atkinson, NE. We went on a feedlot tour, listened to speakers about nutrition, NE Dept of Ag programs, and heard the NE Brand Committee's insight as well. We had tons of trade show vendors, machinery, and equipment outdoors and our pen of three heifers contest to keep us entertained during our breaks. We then had our two prominent speakers, Amanda Radke and Rob Sharkey, speak about being innovative with your operations and never giving up. We then awarded our scholarship winners, held our membership meeting, gave recaps of our programs this year, and gave out our yearly awards. These awards are Volunteer of the Year, Producer of the Year, and Recruiter of the Year. This year's Volunteer of the Year went to Craig O'Kief of Woodlake, NE. Craig has served on the Sandhills Cattle Association Board of Directors and as past president, but his service and dedication to the association didn't stop there. Craig has helped the association with various events after his term ended, mainly our Sandhills Golf Classic, Scholarship Program, and Convention. We are thankful for Craig's lasting dedication and feel he greatly deserved his belt buckle. Our next award is Recruiter of the Year, which goes to someone who promoted the Sandhills Cattle Association and its programs, and this year this award went to Jason Jagels. Jason and his wife, Katie Jagels, were huge supporters of our new Steers for Students Progam, and we could not be more thankful for them. At the Cattlemen's Cut Bull sale in Brewster, NE, they auctioned off a Henry Goldenboy Rifle in February. They donated the proceeds to the Sandhills Cattle Association for the Steers for Students Program and matched the donation themselves. This generosity was tremendous for us as it gave us even more support from other various businesses and producers. Thanks to Jagels and our other donors, we will be offering four local schools beef this year for their school lunches for absolutely no cost to them! Our last award is the prestigious Producer of the Year. This award is given to a Producer member in good standing who is very supportive and active in the Sandhills Cattle Association. This year we gave our Producer of the Year award to Ken Stephens with KEG Herefords, who never misses and golf tournament or a convention. Ken has been a member of the Sandhills Cattle Association for over 30 years, and he was well deserving of this award! After that, we held our scholarship benefit auction and raised over $8,000 for our scholarship program for next year, and then danced the night away with the Twin River Band! We ar

If you can't make it to our convention during the day, that's okay! We will have Twin River Band playing from 7:45 pm to midnight, along with American Legion's bar. Come to the Atkinson Community Center for an evening of fun for only $10 a ticket!!

Our scholarship program is an important part of who we are as an association. This year we gave out $8,500 to some very deserving students in the sandhills area. We wouldn't be able to help these young adults with their future educations without the help of our communities and gracious business and members. If you are able, please come donate an item to our auction or come bid on a few items at our convention! Anything you purchase or give helps young Sandhillers pay for college or trade school expenses. Bidding will also be available online this year as well. Just head to our Facebook page for the link!

Hey everyone, it's Maddie Lamb with the Sandhills Cattle Association with your weekly update of the Sandhills Cattle News.

Happy Beef Month! Every day, we are thankful for ranchers and feeders in the beef industry and what they provide for us in our everyday lives, not just the delicious steaks. I wanted to start off Beef Month with a few interesting facts I have found. It takes 18 months to 3 years to bring beef from the pasture to your plate! Beef production is not a one-person job, it requires a community. Cattle will change caretakers an average of 2-3 times during their lifetime, enabling each person in the process to specialize in their aspect of the beef lifecycle. And also, thirty-five percent of American farms classify themselves as beef cattle operations. That means the beef community represents the largest single segment of American agriculture. Even so, most beef cattle operations are involved in other aspects of the agriculture industry as well.

Our fourth recipient of our Sandhills Cattle Association Scholarship is Megan Amos from Stapleton, NE. Megan is the daughter of Jim & Kennetha Amos of Lovitt-Amos Charolais. Megan will be graduating this week and then will attend the University of Wyoming, majoring in Agricultural Communications in the fall. Megan has chosen this major because she wants to connect ranchers with others to ensure correct communication and to show the rancher's dedicated way of life to the world.

Our fifth and final recipient of our Sandhills Cattle Association Scholarship is Michaela Keller from Valentine, NE. Michaela is the daughter of Chane & Karen Keller of Keller Ranch. Michaela is currently attending Eastern Wyoming College and majoring in Agriculture Business. Michaela wants an agricultural business degree so that she can promote the beef industry in whatever career she may end up in and also gain knowledge to improve her own herd and create a good name for our industry and for women in agriculture.

Congratulations, Megan & Michaela! We can't wait to see where your future takes you!

Hey everyone, it's Maddie Lamb with the Sandhills Cattle Association with your weekly update of the Sandhills Cattle News.

Our Branding School was held yesterday April 27th, and it was a great success for it being the first one in this area! We started off this morning with coffee and doughnuts of course and had our opening remarks at 10 am sharp. Our first speakers of the day were Danna Schenk and Kayla Jesse with the Nebraska Brand Committee. The Brand Committee plays a crucial role in the Sandhills ranchers lives, and they gave us great information regarding their recent updates and changes in the committee. Next we listened to Dr. Becky Funk talk about Biosecurity during the branding season and how to be a good neighbor. She spoke about how as a community jumping from ranch to ranch branding we need to be cautious of ourselves and our horses and livestock, in order to keep the surrounding areas healthy. Dr. Funk also gave us several tips on keeping our own animals and families save and how to not expose them to illnesses if they happen to arise. After that we listened to Dr. Lindsay Waechter-Mead present about the best health management practices and products that we can use to keep our cattle as health as possible during branding season. She went into depth about the vaccinations that we give, how to care for the vaccines properly, and how your relationship with your veterinarian is very very important. We then broke for a nice steak lunch sponsored by Multimin and catered by Niobrara Valley Vineyard. After lunch Jesse Fulton with Beef Quality Assurance gave us his presentation about BQA and why it is important to adopt and implement BQA into your operation! Jesse’s presentation talk about how the public image of ranching is just as important as the production itself. He spoke about how we need to always care for our cattle with respect because there is social media and cameras everywhere in today's world, and you never know who is watching. At the end of his presentation everyone took a quiz and all became BQA certified! Finally, we went out to the arena for Dr. Ron Gill Professor & Extension Livestock Specialist, Associate Department Head for Extension at Texas A&M University, to give us some tips and tricks on cattle handling that we might not have known! We went through low stress cattle handling, rope and drag, nordforks, flanking, and calf table. Ron Gill was exceptional with his explaining of the different processes of working cattle and said that no way is better than the other. Overall we have 48 people attend and so far have received some great feedback! We hope to do this school again someday in the future and hope to have more youth attending!

Our second recipient of our Sandhills Cattle Association Scholarships is Jency Starr from North Platte, NE. Jency is the daughter of Kevin & Raylynn Starr and they help run the Cedar Top Ranch along with Jency’s grandpa Eldon Starr, who has been a SCA member for over 30 years. Jency graduated high school in 2020 and is currently attending the Nebraska Wesleyan University majoring in biology and a chemistry minor. Jency has chosen this major as a path to Pre-Med and hopes to become a Family Medicine Physician in a rural setting like the Sandhills. Congratulations Jency! We can’t wait to see where your future takes you!

Last but not least here is a little market update from Market Alley with Brad Hulett on April 18th, 2022.

“Cattle feeders in the South saw a small turn higher in the cash market last week. Cattle traded mostly a dollar higher at $139, with a few cattle bringing something back of the market. Feeders in the North saw a much more active market. Cash trade in the North ranged from $142 to $145 with dressed cattle trading in the mid $220’s. The North is seeing the smallest market-ready numbers of the season. All indications show that cattle feeders should expect higher money again this week. As the gap begins to widen between the North and the South, we should expect to see feeders in the South have more resolve in their asking prices.Brad Hulett is Director, Customer Development & Regional Manager, Kansas, at Consolidated Beef Producers, Inc.”

Hey everyone, it's Maddie Lamb with your weekly update of the Sandhills Cattle News.

We have had so much going on the last couple weeks here at the office! Two weeks ago, Liz and I traveled to Brewster NE to attend the cattlemen’s cut bull sale. We decided to attend because Jason & Katie purchased a custom Henry Golden boy .22 rifle to be auctioned off at their Cattlemen's Cut Bull Sale, and the proceeds were to be generously donated to our steers for students’ program. Jason & Katie Jagels then promised to match up to $2,500 of the funds raised at the rifle auction. Thanks to Zoetis, The Home Agency, Nutrien Ag Solutions, Broken Bow Animal Hospital, Summit Contracting, Inc, M&S Livestock, The ARC Group / Heather Ramsey, and Jeff & Peg Freudenburg for pooling their money to purchase the rifle once for $3,250 and then donating it back be auctioned off a second time. Dave & Brenda Masek of Thedford then bought it for $1,750. (Dave says stop by his office to check it out!) In total, we received $7,500 that day! That news is HUGE as it means we can pay for the feed and processing of the calves, so the schools will receive the meat from the Steers for Students program absolutely 100% FREE!

The Steers for Students program allows Sandhills youth to learn meats evaluation from calves grown in our Educational, Performance & Carcass Contest from local Sandhills ranchers. It opens the door, literally, to the Husker Meats locker for them to see precisely how the calves are hung and then packaged. They will listen to industry experts from the University of Nebraska as they walk through the process of judging and evaluating careers in the meat industry. After completing the evaluation, the ground portion of the meat will be distributed to four Sandhills schools - Valentine, Thedford, Gordon & West Holt. The premium cuts will be split between the calf donors and the Sandhills Cattle Association!

Four local ranchers generously donated a calf for the Steers for Students program: Craig & Katie O'Kief of the Walking X Ranch near Wood Lake (meat donated to Valentine Public Schools), the Blackford Ranch near Brownlee (meat donated to Thedford Public Schools), Greg & Jolee Nielsen of Gordon (meat donated to Gordon Public Schools), and Atkinson Livestock in Atkinson meat donated West Holt Public Schools). Since this is our pilot year, the schools selected were based on the calf donor's location.

The next and final step to the program will happen at the end of June. Students will visit Husker Meats in Ainsworth, Nebraska, to learn from meat industry professionals about their role and how the students interested could pursue careers in the meat industry. The carcasses and meat will be evaluated and packaged to be sent to the participating schools. Be sure to stay tuned in to our radio ads and our newsletter for more about what happens next!

A HUGE HEARTFELT THANK YOU FROM LIZ AND I AND THE SANDHILLS CATTLE ASSOCIATION to all who have donated to make the program's first year a success so far!

If you are interested in donating to keep Sandhills beef in the hands of Sandhills students, check out the website at SandhillsCattle.com/Steers-4-Students. You can find a donation button and contact info for the SCA office.

This update of the Sandhills Cattle News is brought to you by Cattlemen’s Cut.

The Cattlemen’s Cut is having its bull sale on February 24th, 2022, at 1:00 pm at the ranch. They have a new location this year as they have moved to Brewster, Nebraska, to what was formerly Spencer Herefords. They will have 50+ Angus bulls and females available for purchase and they are available for viewing the day before the sale. Visit their website for more sale information at thecattlemenscut.com.

Hey everyone, it's Maddie Lamb with your weekly update of the Sandhills Cattle News.

Speaking of The Cattlemen’s Cut Bull Sale, Liz and I are going to be there! Jason and Katie Jagels have purchased a special edition Cattlemen’s Cut Henry Goldenboy, from HD Arms LLC in Henderson, NE, to be auctioned off at their sale on February 24th. They generously decided that 100% of the proceeds from the auction of this item will go directly to the Sandhills Cattle Association for the Steers for Students Program, to continue to ensure that local schools in our area eat local beef. On top of that, the Cattlemen’s Cut will match up to $2,500 to further the investment in the future of beef in schools in our area. We are completely blown away by this generosity and couldn’t be more thankful for Jason & Katie Jagels support. So come down to their sale next week and bid on some bulls and support the Sandhills Cattle Association Steers for Students program and bid on this Cattlemen’s Cut Henry Goldenboy! Pictures of the firearm is on the Sandhills Cattle Association and The Cattlemen’s Cut Facebook page.

If you haven't heard, the 'Steers for Students' program is our new educational beef production program. The donated calves will be penned with the retained ownership calves at Cottonwood Feeders for the Educational, Performance, and Carcass Contest. Their donors will still receive the calf's data during and after the contest. The 'Steers for Students' program calves will be sent to Husker Meats of Ainsworth, Nebraska, instead of being shipped to the larger plants like the other calves. Jim Pinney of Husker Meats and a group of industry professionals will offer local students and producers a chance to learn about carcass evaluation while experiencing how a packing plant operates. Schools that send the students will be provided the opportunity to receive the donated beef for their school lunch programs at little to no cost, and the producers will get half of the prime cuts in return!

If you wish to donate to the 'Steers for Students' program, the Association accepts cash donations to cover feed and processing to ensure the beef will be free to the participating schools. You can even choose which school you'd like to 'sponsor' in this program! If you're interested in helping support us, please call us at the office at 402-376-2310 or email sca@sandhillscattle.com.

Hey everyone, this is Maddie Lamb with your weekly update of the Sandhills Cattle News!

Since 1982, the Sandhills Cattle Association has hosted the EP&C Contest for its members, making this year our 40th year! We thank you all for choosing to help us continue this tradition and we thank our current participants that are a part of the contest this year at Cottonwood Feeders near Stuart, Nebraska.

We have a total of 128 calves entered in the competition this year; 82 steers and 46 heifers entered from 23 different owners. We had four owners who have generously donated steers to the Steers for Students program as well. Including Wes Kilmurry of Atkinson Livestock, Matt & Kristin Blackford, Blackford Ranch of Thedford, Greg & Jolee Nielsen, Nielsen ranch of Gordon, and Craig & Katie O’Keif, Walking X Ranch of Wood Lake. On November 30, 2021, we traveled to Cottonwood Feeders to gather the beginning weights and establish beginning values. We utilize the Nebraska Weekly Summary from the Nebraska USDA to establish beginning values of the calves according to that week’s summary. The contest calls for calves to be entered at a base weight of 600 pounds, so we adjust beginning values using 600 pounds as a base weight. We then determine slides based on the values established in this report. This year, our heifers were base-priced at $157.08 per hundredweight ($/cwt) or $942.48 per head per 600-pound heifer, with a 2¢ slide per hundred pounds over base weight and 12¢ slide per hundred pounds under base weight. Steers were based at $175.17 per cwt or $1,051.02 per head for a 600-pound steer, with a 3.75¢ slide per hundred pounds over base weight and 16.5¢ slide per hundred pounds under base weight. Beginning weights gathered on November 30 showed heifers averaging 580 pounds, steers averaging 659 pounds, and the pen averaging 625 pounds. When we look at our five-year historical data, we can see that our entry weights have steadily increased over time.

We are scheduled to process the calves again for a reimplant and weigh sometime around March 10th. Can’t wait to see what this year’s contest will hold for our producers!

Our new 'Steers for Students' program is an educational program for the youth of the Sandhills. The donated calves are currently penned with the rest of the calves for the Educational, Performance, and Carcass Contest. The calf’s donors will still receive the calf's data during and after the contest. However, at the time of harvest, the 'Steers for Students' program calves will be sent to Husker Meats of Ainsworth, Nebraska instead of being shipped to the larger plants like the other calves. Jim Pinney of Husker Meats and a group of industry professionals will offer local students and producers a chance to learn about carcass evaluation while experiencing how a packing plant operates and more. Schools that send the students will be provided the opportunity to receive the donated beef for their school lunch programs at little to no cost.

If you wish to donate to the 'Steers for Students' program the Association is accepting cash donations to cover feed and processing to ensure the beef will be free to the surrounding area schools. You can even choose which school you'd like to 'sponsor' in this program! If you’re interested in helping support the Sandhills Cattle Associations' efforts to help educate the next generation, please call us at the office at 402-376-2310 or email sca@sandhillscattle.com.

Good afternoon listeners. This is Maddie Lamb with the Sandhills Cattle Association, with your weekly update of the Sandhills Cattle News.

With the New Year coming upon us I hope that we all take some time to reflect and are very thankful for the life we live and all we are blessed with, even during these trying times. Our fellow ranchers in Kansas are receiving lots of support and supplies, but the road to repair in front of them is still a long one. I know that hay is a scarce commodity here due to the dry year, so I ask, if you are able, to please make a monetary donation to the Kansas Livestock Foundation. 100% of the donations they receive will be distributed to producers that were impacted by the fires. Monetary donations can be mailed to the Kansas Livestock Foundation, 6031 SW 37th Street, Topeka, KS, 66614.

2022 will be here in just a few days which means that we are getting ready for upcoming livestock production sales! Here at the SCA office, we have come up with several different advertising avenues to reach as many people as we can for you. We have started to utilize our member email base and social media platforms to reach people immediately instead of waiting for the newsletter to get through the mail. We offer Email Marketing Blasts where we send out your sale flier, date, and information to all our members. We can also send out your digital sale catalog so our members can see what you have to offer weeks before your sale date. And we also have decided that we will be announcing your sale day information on these radio ads and our podcasts. We can use all these different marketing avenues to help you get more paying customers at your sales, and they are all reasonably priced. We have a complete bull sale ad package that includes what I discussed above and even more, or you can also choose to purchase individual options! Don't hesitate to contact me if you're interested in any advertising avenue that we offer or if you have any questions at 402-376-2310 or email me at mlamb@sandhillscattle.com.

I am currently working on finishing up our Annual Directory for the 2021-2022 membership year. The annual directory is a complete list of all Sandhills Cattle Association members, livestock auctions, and other essential businesses in the Sandhills area. The SCA publishes the annual directory once a year, and a copy is given out to all members. If you have any changes to your ranch, business, phone numbers, or ownerships of your operation, please let me know so that I can publish the correct information for the upcoming year.

Hey everyone! This is Maddie Lamb with the Sandhills Cattle Association with your update of the Sandhills Cattle News.

I hope you all survived the terrible winds we had yesterday and got a little moisture to go along with it. Unfortunately, my home state of Kansas didn’t get to fair as well as we did. I lived in Hays, KS, for two years, going to school at FHSU, and so far, three families that I personally know in the area lost their entire place due to the horrible fires and wind yesterday. The fire that was near Hays, KS, was ten miles wide and 35 miles long, and there were over 20 fires in several other counties in Kansas yesterday. Homes, equipment, and livestock have been lost, and lots of families turned out their horses and cattle and are trying to locate them and deal with all the damage today.

I shared a video on Facebook of a wife recording her husband riding his horse into the fire to push his cattle away to somewhere of safety. If that doesn’t speak to the compassion and strength that cattle ranchers have for their animals, then I don’t know what does. I hope this tragedy can show anyone who questions cattle production that they are way more than just animals to us. Please say some prayers for our fellow ranchers in Kansas that they can recover from this tragedy as quickly as possible.

Last week, I finished the December newsletter, so those should be hitting your mailboxes very soon. With 2021 coming to an end, I included several articles on what to expect in 2022 for the cattle industry and what predictions there are for the cattle market next year. I also added a project update on the meatpacking plant Sustainable Beef, LLC. The plant is well on its way to starting the building process in North Platte, so that is very exciting news for cattle producers.

We had our second convention meeting on December 14th, and the planning is coming along so quickly! We have a tentative schedule for the 83rd Annual Convention. Our 25th Annual Golf Classic will be on May 26th and our Convention and Trade show on May 27th. The Golf Classic will take place at the Atkinson Country Club, and during the day, while everyone is golfing, we will have our second annual BBQ Cookoff! Dinner will be served after the cookoff is complete, and awards will be given at the country club that evening.

On the 27th, we still start the morning by traveling to Cottonwood feeders in Stuart, NE, only about 20 miles away from Atkinson. Visiting the feedlot will allow everyone to look at how all the calves are doing and see the operation firsthand. Then we will have registration at the community building in Atkinson around 11:00 am, and then we will start off our day of activities! We will have several great speakers, our Pen of Three Contest, trade show vendors, and many scholarship auction items to bid on. We will change things up a little bit this year and have a nice served supper, and our entertainment for the night will be music played by Two Rivers Band from Merriman! We are so excited about this convention, and it is going to be here in just a few months. I know that you are all busy all year round, so get the date put on your calendars now! SCA 83rd Annual Convention on May 26th and 27th, 2022, in Atkinson, Nebraska.

On that note, the Sandhill’s Cattle Association is looking for committee members for all our various events! We want to better our events for you, and to do that; we need some of your help. We have several committees, including Convention, Education, EP&C Contest, Golf, Fundraising, Membership, Pen of Three, Ranch Tour, and Scholarship. Meetings for each committee are held via Google Meets, so much traveling isn’t required at all. You would be giving us the input and support that we need to continue to become a better association

Hey everyone! this is Maddie Lamb with the Sandhills Cattle Association with your update of the Sandhills Cattle News.

Even though it's nearing wintertime and things are starting to slow down in the Sandhills, we are still just as busy as ever at the office. I personally have been getting busy with all the upcoming livestock production sales that are coming in 2022. The SCA has started to utilize our member email base and social media platforms to reach people our newsletters can't. We can do Email Marketing Blasts which is when we send out your sale flier, date, and information to all our members. So far, we have had pretty good success with this, and many people have been opening the emails and heading to our producers' websites! We also can send out your digital sale catalog, and we have nearly 1,000 members at this time, so that is a lot of advertising that can just come from emails. We also have decided that we will announce your sale information, date, location, etc., for several weeks before your sale date during these radio spots and our SCN podcast. I'm trying to get these radio spots done weekly now, and our podcasts are available at any time. We can use all of these different marketing avenues to help get you more customers at your sales, and they are all reasonably priced. We have a complete bull sale ad package that includes what I discussed above and even more, and we are running a deal on it right now! Don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you're interested in any advertising or if you have any questions at 402-376-2310 or email me at mlamb@sandhillscattle.com.

This week we went down to Cottonwood Feeders in Stuart, Nebraska, to visit our EP&C Calves and our Steers for Students calves. The calves have settled in great and are eating their feed very well. We ran all the calves through the chute to get their beginning weights, deworm them, vaccinate, and tag them with their EID's. The calves handled excellent and were all very docile, and we had a large number of calves that were in a very close weight range, which will make this an awesome contest. For our final total count, we have 128 calves entered; 42 of those are heifers, 86 of those are steers, and there are 4 Steers for Students calves included in that as well. We are super excited about our Steers for Students program, and we are so thankful for the producers that donated their steers! Greg Nielsen of Gordon, NE, Craig O'Keefe of Valentine, NE, Matt Blackford of Brownlee, and Atkinson Livestock each donated a nice steer calf for this program, and we can't wait to see how they all perform.

If you haven't heard, the 'Steers for Students' program is our new educational youth program.

If you're interested i

Hey everyone this is Maddie Lamb with the Sandhills Cattle Association with your update of the Sandhills Cattle News.

First off, I would like to introduce myself to those who haven’t met me yet. I’m Maddie Lamb and I just moved to the south of Nenzel after I accepted the Outreach Coordinator position here at the Sandhills Cattle Association. I am from Western Kansas and I grew up in a small town called Russell Springs and it is about 6 hours straight south of where I live now. I grew up ranching for my parents and my grandpa where the ‘land is too rough to farm’ as I like to say. My grandpa runs a registered black Angus herd and sells bulls all across Kansas and Colorado private treaty and my parents have registered Black Angus and Hereford Angus cross cow-calf operation as well as a yearling operation. I graduate from Fort Hays State University in December with my bachelor’s degree in Agribusiness, and I am so thankful that my career has led me up here to the Sandhills and I’m happy to meet new people so don’t hesitate to stop in the office, and say hi.

The newsletter was published and mailed last Friday, Nov 12 so those should be at your mailboxes already. This was my first newsletter so I hope that you enjoy it and please let me know if there is anything that I can do better! There are a lot of good articles and some great livestock sales coming up so don’t wait to look through your newsletters!

I have been here for almost 3 months and time has just flown by with all the events and publications that we have been doing. I have really been thrown into the heat of things, but I am learning as I go and am loving my job here so far. We started off with our Fall Feeder Calf Preview and our 82nd annual convention in September and now we are starting our 50th annual EP&C contest. This year we are back at Cottonwood Feeders in Stuart, Nebraska and we have 128 calves entered in our EP&C contest and we already have several steers entered in our Steers for Students Program.

The 'Steers for Students' program is a new educational program for the youth of the Sandhills. The donated calves will be penned with the retained ownership calves for the during of the Educational, Performance, and Carcass Contest. Their donors will still receive the calf's data during and after the contest. Schools that send the students will be provided the opportunity to receive the donated beef for their school lunch programs at little to no cost.

If you wish to donate to the 'Steers for Students' program but don't have a calf, the Association is accepting cash donations to cover feed and processing to ensure the beef will be free to the participating schools. You can even choose which school you'd like to 'sponsor' in this program! If you’re interested in helping support us, please call us at the office at 402-376-2310 or email sca@sandhillscattle.com.

And lastly, the Sandhills Cattle Association Scholarship Committee held its meeting on November 4th, 2021. They decided on various scholarship application questions, the application process, and the requirements to be awarded an SCA scholarship. Thanks to all our generous donors to the scholarship auction at convention in September we are going to be able to award $9,000 this year! There are several different scholarships available. The Howard Wright Memorial Scholarship for $500. The

Hey everyone, this is Amber Sides with the Sandhills Cattle Association with your update of the Sandhills Cattle News.

Our May publication was mailed out last Friday, so you should start seeing them in your mailboxes! So be sure to check them out, there is a lot of great information and advertisements you don’t want to miss!

We have lots of people seeking summer pasture so if you or anyone you know has pasture available, please contact us to post an ad for you or check out our website to see those seeking pasture.

Our wage survey is usually something we really push at the first of the year so that we can compile results for members or website users to use throughout the year. Unfortunately, our wage survey in the beginning of the year did not get a lot of participation, however after several requests for results, we decided to encourage ranchers to participate again! After a second time, we got quite a bit of participation back and we are currently working on compiling those results to release an updated version here very soon. So, check out the website if you are interested in receiving any data from the survey. Thank you to all that participated in this survey!

Why should you join the Sandhills Cattle Association? Our mission to promote the cattle resources of the Sandhills; however, we are growing so much that we are promoting the cattle and resources statewide. Our new and improved newsletter reaches almost 1,000 members and growing and covers most of Nebraska as well as parts of South Dakota, Kansas, Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho and more. It is a great opportunity to advertise your cattle in our feeder cattle news, have access to the list services which includes feed and pasture listing, employment opportunities, equipment for sale and more. We strive to provide the most for our members and of course cattle! We have different levels of membership based on the type of member and the type of services they want, from only obtaining a newsletter every month to advertising your business in every issue as well as representing it at the annual convention in September. It has been a few weeks since I have been on to share news about what’s been happening down at the association! May 31st, we ended our first ever Ranch Mom’s Photo Contest in honor of National Beef Month and Mother’s Day. We had several great submissions which made choosing only 3 exceedingly difficult.

Our first-place winner was Mrs. Barb Wentz of Naper, Nebraska. Her story was so inspiring to myself, and I think is what we all hope to be as ranch moms and wives. Her picture was submitted by her granddaughter and is of Mrs. Barb sitting in the side by side overseeing the cattle work being done. Her granddaughter wrote, “My Grandma Barb has gone above and beyond for being one of the hardest working ranch wives around! She has helped my grandpa fix fence, hall cattle, brand, work hogs, and much more for almost 60 years! She has Alzheimer’s so this picture is very special because although she’s not able to do what she used to; she is still along for rides to aid my grandpa in a different capacity. I’m blessed to raise my family 15 miles away, and my three girls have been instilled with hard work ethic, a love for animals, and an appreciation for Nebraska farming and ranching!!” We thank Barb so much for her contributions to the Ag industry and wish this very hard-working lady all the best! Thank you to Husker Meats of Ainsworth, Nebraska for sponsoring her $150 beef box.

Our second-place winner was Kelsey de Ganahl! The picture submitted was of her holding her 3-month-old daughter leaning against the chutes after preconditioning calves! This is such a perfect depiction of the ranch mom's life! Congratulations Kelsey and thank you for your submission! Also, a big thank you to 402 Beef Co. of Bristow, Nebraska for partially sponsoring the $150 beef box prize!!

Lastly, our third-place winner was Deandra Rousey of North Platte, Nebraska. Her picture was submitted by her husband and is of Deandra sitting on horseback while her daughter pets her horse after moving pairs to a new pasture. Another great depiction of the ranch mom's life, and wonderful not only see her daughter’s love the horse but also the beautiful sandhills and of course cattle in the background. Thank you so much for your submission and congratulations. Big thank you to Valentine Locker for also partially sponsoring the $150 beef box!!

Thank you to all the others that also submitted a photo, they were so neat to be able to review and read! I posted all the submissions on our website under blogs, so go and check out all those great ranch moms we have!

We are also running the Ranch Dads Photo Contest this month for all those great dads we know and love as well! You can find the link to submit on our website or on our Facebook page! We have gotten a ton of great submissions already, which is going to make the decision of choosing the top 3 even harder this month! Make sure to submit by June 30th! Winners will be announced July 1st!
