Kingdom Come“What is the Kingdom of God?”Luke 8:1 Confusion about the Kingdom Unfamiliar with kings and kingdoms Incomplete understanding Clarity about the Kingdom The King Who reigns (His sovereign will is done) with power and authority in a realm (wherever King’s will is done) through His peopleThe Kingdom of God is where God’s will is done by God’s people through God’s power. Coming of the Kingdom The Kingdom of God comes in stages: Prophesied Stage Inaugurated Stage Fulfilled Stage The fundamental task of the Church is to make visible the invisible Kingdom of God. First LoveRevelation 2:1-7What is it that helps the Church stand firm in its mission? What Jesus sees in the Church: In working hard to keep the faith, the church in Ephesus left the relationship Jesus sees their hard work: They kept the doctrine, and they stayed determined. Jesus sees their hearts: They left their first love.Correct doctrine and sheer determination are empty without love. What Jesus wants for the Church: Return to their first loving pursuit. Think back to the beginning Turn back to Christ Take Home Truth: We will stand firm only when we are walking with Christ in loving pursuit of Christ. Yet, our love for Christ is warmed at the fire of His love for us. LifeGroup Questions Elyria: Applying the Teaching to Our Lives Icebreaker: What is one thing from your childhood that you wish would become popular again? Share one thing that stood out to you from the sermon. Why did that stand out? Imagine that your walk with Christ is like canoeing down a river. In a few words, how is it going right now? Are you pacing yourself? Is the current running strong? Have you begun to coast? Have you run aground on the bank? Are you taking a nap in the canoe? How is the journey going? We often hear that the Christian life is a marathon, and not a sprint. In your own words, what does this mean? What is helpful about this analogy? What can be dangerous about this analogy? Our love for Christ is one thing that helps us to stand firm and continue to shine the light of Christ. What makes love so important in the midst of great difficulty? First love is characterized by sincere, pure devotion (2 Corinthians 13:2-3). Is there anything that has distracted you from your devotion to Christ in the past? What happened as a result? Is there anything that is distracting you right now? In order to return to their first love, Jesus tells the church to remember (think back), and to repent (turn back). Think back: What was it like at first? Is there anything that you’ve lost in your relationship with Christ? Is there anything that used to come naturally and now feels stale? Turn back: Is there anything that you sense Jesus wants you to return to?
“The Habit of hello: why we need each other”Hebrews 10:24-25You don’t get the culture you want. You get the culture you create.Followers of Jesus make a habit of meeting.Why do we meet?To ConsiderTo SpurTo WorkTo EncourageWhen we truly meet Jesus, our meetings become a place where people truly meet. CHRISTlike Characteristic: Relates with other centered loved. LifeGroup Questions: Applying the Teaching to Our Lives What is something that God whispered to you during the sermon today? Read Hebrews 10:24-25. As a group, what are some ways we have “spurred one another on toward love and good deeds”? Be specific. What are some ways you have been encouraged by this group? If possible, go around and share an encouraging trait/characteristic from each member. We heard that one definition of courage is “to tell the story of who you are with your whole heart”. How comfortable are you sharing who you truly are at church/in life? How does being honest about who we are help us become like Jesus? How does encouragement help others become courageous? Do you have an example you can share from your life? Is Vermilion campus a place that operates more like a meeting or a place where people meet? What’s the difference? How can we improve? Have you given up meeting people? Be honest. How can you, specifically, make a habit of meeting others? Now, as a group, consider 2-3 ways you can hold each other accountable to help create a culture where we make a habit of intentionally meeting everyone that walks into our church.
“Strength! Courage!”Joshua 1:8-9 LifeGroup Questions: Applying the Teaching to Our Life Begin Life Group with prayer - invite the Holy Spirit to speak and move among you. Perhaps begin with requests for prayer so that’s not overlooked at the end. It’s important to take the time to fellowship and pray intentionally for one another. Ice breaker: Describe a time with your group when you lost all your courage and strength - what caused your crisis? Is it possible for a great warrior like Joshua to feel fear and discouragement after all the battles he had faced and won? Why is that a very human reaction for us all? At what points in Jesus’ ministry life did it seem that He could have felt fear and discouragement like Joshua? Where do we see God step in to give a word of strength and courage to Jesus? (see Matthew 3 | Matthew 17 | John 12 How does it work for us then? How do we live out a love for God’s Word as described in verse 8? How does God use the church and the very people in your group to keep you strong and courageous and not bound in fear and discouragement? How is the church God’s agent for this purpose? Close in prayer and praise. Give God all your fears and discouragements publicly and gain strength and courage from the examples of Joshua and Jesus and the prayers of your brothers and sisters around you.CHRIST Connection: Connected to God through the Word and Prayer, Spirit-led Servant.

How does that relate to our spiritual lives? What does it mean to love God? Unpack: Loving God is about proximity, not performance. What are areas in your life that you can invite God into? How could your walk with Christ change if you really believed that He WANTS you! God loves you deeply and wants you to revel in the beauty of His nearness. How might you begin to thirst for God like the Psalmist says?

When historians look back at our time in history, what are some things that they would say define our cultural moment? What are some of the ways Paul embraced a life that was contrary to the cultural norms of the day? What was Paul’s big offense that got him into such trouble? What was the high place for your family of origin? How did that affect you then and now? How has Jesus transformed your high place? Paul was all alone and the Lord had already in mind for Priscilla & Aquila to meet him in Corinth and Silas and Timothy were close on their heels. Describe a time in your life when the Lord provided support at just the right time. Stop and collectively praise God for those moments shared by everyone. Are any of you frustrated like Paul was with the Jews - with a family member, co-worker or neighbor who you’ve been trying to share Jesus with? Share names if appropriate so that you all can pray for these people specifically at the end and lift up your LG member to be encouraged and strengthened. It’s all about His mission and His way of using you in your sphere of influence. How can we keep Jesus in His rightful high place and keep from getting distracted from the mission of going, sharing and making disciples? Who has God brought into your life that can help you with this? Close in prayer giving all we discussed to the Lord together! Amen!

Scan both letters to see Paul’s approach to discipling Timothy - what do you learn? Share a story from your life, or your family's lives regarding waiting. What was your reaction to a closed door from God? Did it resolve or are you still waiting? What have you learned about yourself and the Lord? God opened Lydia’s heart to respond to the Good News. What fruit came after her “yes” to Jesus? Acts 16:15; 40. These three stories illustrate the importance of us keeping our full attention on Jesus and what He is doing and then obediently joining Him in that activity. What needs to change in order for our Lord to have your undivided attention throughout the day? This week you will receive daily prompts to stoke the fires of attention to the work of God around you. As you obey the Spirit’s leading, share your stories with one another, encourage each other and pray for one another!

Ice breaker: What is the craziest day you’ve had recently, or ever? Tell the story of your epic “day in the life” For Paul and Silas, that day was supposed to be the place of prayer then back to the church gathering place at Lydia’s yet the unexpected occurred. How do you deal with what God knows is coming and we see as an interruption? Have you ever been attacked based on your ethnicity and/or religion? How did you deal with it? What did you learn? How does Paul’s instruction to these very believers in Philippi, years later, give us some clues: Philippians 4:4-9 Adoration of our Lord in the dark night of suffering is not something that comes naturally. Neither does a firm stance in the face of opposition. How does one do this?! How was Jesus a model for Paul & Silas and us? (from our daily devos: Mark 14:26, 32-42, 60-62; Luke 22:49-51) In the jail scene - who was the true captive - the Jewish duo or the jailer? How can we see people differently so that we view their own captivity with compassion and prayer and conversation? In this story, the jailer “believed” - this is one of our 5 B’s! How did Paul and Silas live out the other B’s in other parts of the story - (Build, Bring, Belong, Believe, Become). Ask Him to bring the place of prayer more into your routine, to prepare you for the unexpected moments in the marketplace, to fill you with His Spirit to be a witness of prayer and song in the dark times of seeming bondage and to use you to bring freedom to others through Jesus alone and encourage them in their growth making you a discipler! That’s a lot, but let’s follow Jesus well and ask so we might receive!
“Staying strong in the struggle”Acts 16:22-34Act(s) now series NOTES: CHRIST-LIKE CHARACTERISTICS: all of them! Can you name them and explain how they all show up? LIFE GROUP QUESTIONS: What is a favorite memory of your Father? What were your first thoughts from the sermon? How did God speak to you as we opened His Word? The Bible is full of stories of Godly men and women facing beatings, torture and imprisonment and they maintain their faith. Why do believers today often still choose to doubt or walk away from God during struggles? What practical steps can we take to maintain our faith when we face injustice or suffering? How can engaging in worship rather than worry help us stay faithful during our own challenging circumstances? Paul and Silas chose to stay even when it seemed like God had provided a way of escape. How can we discern when to wait on God’s timing rather than taking immediate action in difficult situations? Paul and Silas’ faith led to the jailer and his household being saved. What is a relationship or situation that you may be trying to escape that God is calling you to remain faithful and stay to influence others for the kingdom?

Simon focuses on ritual purity rather than loving people. Simon sees the woman for her reputation, and treats her like a danger to be avoided. Simon judges Jesus for allowing a sinful woman to wash His feet.Application: Pride produces a self-focused perspective that limits your ability to love. What Jesus saw: The perspective of grace. Jesus saw the condition of Simon’s heart. Jesus saw two debtors: Both owed a debt they couldn’t pay, and both were in need of God’s unmerited forgiveness. What is the picture Peter uses for those who reject and what does it mean? Verses 9-11 speak to those of us who wish to obey - what can you gather from this and the whole passage about what the rock, foundation and structure should look like as we obey? How can we best help each other build properly? End your time in prayer over these things. Pray for the floodwaters that may be in the lives of your group members and for a new perspective of God exposing our foundation and desiring to help us dig deeper into Jesus and to build properly on Him.

Fruit WILL be produced. Key Questions: What a person stores up in their heart is revealed by what comes out in their actions. Key Question: What am I storing?Your actions reveal who holds your heart. Discipleship Questions“Help for Hypocrites”Luke 6:41-42Jesus knew the power of humor to teach truth. The “speck” is small. Those who focus on it are being nitpicky. The “plank” is substantial. Those who miss it are blind. The “contrast” is hilarious. Those who get it will laugh. The “questions” are revealing. Those who use them will grow.Jesus knew the power of questions to train disciples. What am I paying attention to? Don’t focus on the flaws in other’s lives; be merciful. Focus on Jesus; learn to love like him. Don’t ignore the sin in your life; confess Am I aware of my blind spots? Blind spots are visible, but really hard to see in ourselves. Ask God to open your eyes. Ask people to help you see what “you fail to see.” Where is there hypocrisy in my life? Hypocrisy is not failing to be perfect, it’s pretending to be something you’re not. Ask God to point out hypocrisy in your life. I’m not ready to help others see when I’m living in hypocrisy. Have I dealt with my sin? Seeing sin in others should cause us to ask “where is there sin in me?” The only remedy for sin is the cross of Christ. When we confess our sin, the blood of Jesus washes away our sin.Look in the mirror yourself before you look for a flaw in others.

Jesus Holy Spirit Scripture What are you learning? A disciple is learning the way of Jesus not facts about Jesus. Discipleship is more apprenticeship than scholarship. Disciples follow Jesus to learn from Jesus to become like Jesus. Are you becoming more like Jesus? The goal of discipleship is Christlikeness. Christlikeness is an ongoing process not a onetime experience. How are you training? You don’t have to “go someplace” to learn to become like Christ, God has designed our everyday life to help train us to become more like Jesus. The CoreH.R.I.S.T.like Characteristics are a curriculum for Christlikeness. As we “learn to breathe,” we can cooperate with the Holy Spirit’s work to make us more like Jesus.

Expanding Your Circle of LoveWhy We (For)giveLuke 6:37-38Jesus’ point: We show mercy by giving pardon and possessions. Forgiveness: “To release or pardon” when someone has harmed or offended you. Giving: To give up material possessions to someone else. The common thread: Christ is calling us to let go of things we tend to hold on to.Why should we show mercy? Because Jesus commands it, and that should be enough. Because wisdom commends it, and Jesus wants us to know it’s worth Because God models it; we give because God alreadyTake Home Truth: Only when we understand the mercy we’ve been freely given in Christ will we be free to give it to others.
Expanding Your Circle of Love“Measuring Up”Luke 6:37-38Are we measuring up to Jesus’ standard? Am I listening? (27a) Am I loving well? (27b-35a) Am I resembling the Father? (35b-36) (Matt 5:44-45) What am I doing? (31, 37-38)Truth: God’s glory and presence fill the whole earth and universe - except the heart of man. We do not measure up to God’s standard. We do not hold others to a just standard. God knew this and sent One who did measure up. (Eph. 3:19 NIV) Jesus’ death on the cross pours life into those who believe in Him giving forgiveness and hope and peace to the fullest measure!What does measuring up look like? Accept the free gift of God in Christ Invite Him to make His home in your heart - to make you more like Jesus Display the character of God in how you love Him & others judging | forgiving = release condemning | giving = surrender We do not forgive and give to get but to let go It’s not about what I get, it’s about what God gets: glory & praise We need to up our measurement to God’s standard In Christ, He has forgiven and given to the fullest measure and poured it into our laps He expects us to forgive and give to others with this same measurement! Looking back over this series, what area do you feel you’ve grown in when responding to Jesus’ challenge to listen, love, resemble the Father and do good to others? Thinking of that person who you struggle to forgive, or the one you don’t wish to give anything to, how can you take a step towards the love and generosity Jesus is talking about here? How does the Hindu/Buddhist term “karma” compare and differ to what Jesus is teaching in this section? Read Jesus’ story of the unforgiving servant in Matthew 18:21-35. They speak a different language. We don’t know their culture. They are different than us. We are afraid of them. What percentage of Muslims are Arabs? 20% Where do we start in reaching out to Muslims? We start with prayer. We remember what God has done for us. We go to them. We give. Do we need to earn God’s Mercy? No Do Muslims come to Jesus quickly? Usually no. Give them time. Give them grace. It’s a journey. Big picture Are there Honor and Shame issues going on? Jesus’ kind of love is… Unconditional. Don’t base your love on their response or their reception. Others-centered. Don’t restrict your love to the lovable. Proactive. Don’t wait for the right opportunity; make it your lifestyle. Reflective. Ask yourself… “What would it look like to love this person well?” This love is for all people, including “those who love you.” Loving those who love you isn’t extra credit, it’s an expectation. Our love is seen most clearly in how we respond when it becomes costly. This love is not about safe investments, it’s about freely giving.Take Home Truth: We choose to sacrificially love one another because Jesus did it first.LifeGroup Questions: What is one thing that stuck out to you from the sermon? In ancient times, leprosy was just as much a relational disease as it was a physical one. Sin has broken our relationships and made us unfit for God’s presence. In his approach, the leper demonstrates a desperate belief: a combination of suffering, faith, humility, and surrender.Jesus’ response answers the question: He restores the leper, showing that He is both willing and able to save. Jesus uses His body to touch the man, comforting him and affirming his human dignity. Jesus uses His words to reveal God’s heart and to heal the disease. Getting to know Jesus is something that we can’t afford to ignore.
We all have misconceptions about Jesus that need to be addressed.
The people of Nazareth had misgivings about Jesus’ identity, mission, and audience.
Identity: Jesus has become a great teacher, but He’s no Messiah. Mission: Jesus is here to serve our Audience: Jesus will give special preference to certain people.
Jesus intentionally confronts our misconceptions because He wants to be known by us.
Mission: Jesus came to be crushed so that we could be healed. Audience: Jesus came for everyone impacted by the curse of sin. Identity: Jesus is the long awaited Messiah, the savior of the world, and the rightful King over all creation.
Whenever we learn something about Jesus, it’s an invitation to respond to Jesus.

Two things being led by the Spirit doesn’t mean:
Mechanical
Mystical
It means what we are “full of” is what’s going to influence us, direct us, lead us.
How Do We Do This?
We have to want to be full of the Spirit We have to have regular rhythms and practices for filling up We have to practice in the moment
To serve in the power of the Spirit

He gives us the fullness of the Spirit so that we can declare and demonstrate the kingdom of God in the power of the Spirit.
Why do we often shy away from the power of the Spirit?

Begin Life Group with prayer - invite the Holy Spirit to speak and move among you. When you first heard the topic of “power” in the sermon and text, what was or is the first thing that comes to mind? What images, statements, people or movements come to mind when you hear the word “power”? Compare and contrast the power of God and the power of the devil. Acts 10:38 describes 2 powers at work in the life of Jesus - how are these 2 powers still at war in our lives? Describe a moment in your life when you experienced the power of God’s Spirit take hold of you. Did that moment lead to momentum of the Spirit’s work in your life? Why / why not? In observing the Spirit’s power today, which person/people do relate most to and why - Israel, David, Ezekiel, Jesus, the Church? Review Ephesians 3:14-21. Discuss where you struggle in regards to surrender and pray for each other to be able to submit to the power of God and reject the power of the enemy.

Discipling the Next Generation“Clarifying our Primary Task”Luke 2:212020-2030 is the Decade of Discipleship Obeying Jesus’ command to “go make disciples” necessitates making disciples of each succeeding generation.Being a disciple……who makes disciples……who make disciples… Parenting IS discipleship. Every parent is discipling/training their kids. The question is: “training them to be & do what?” Parenting is “discipling the next generation.” Why does the Gospel of Luke even bother to mention circumcision? It was a physical sign of the covenant between God and the Jewish people. It was a part of God’s overall training plan for His children. It was a custom to be observed in every succeeding generation. It was an act of parents obeying God. It was always done with naming the child. Identity: Who we are Belonging: Whose we are The lesson for us is not circumcision, but to see that: Jesus’ parents were committed to parent Jesus like God had commanded. Jesus’ parents provide a great model for godly parenting. The primary task of parenting: to nurture God-centered The primary task of discipling: to help someone become like Christ (the best model of a God-centered life.)

God’s grace is a gift greater than any thing we could ever receive at Christmastime.
Elizabeth & Zechariah receive from Jehovah, the gracious gifts of:
• A promise fulfilled• Time• A name• Obedience
• Presence
• Atonement
The greatest gracious Gift God has given is the sending of His one and only son, Jesus as our atoning sacrifice for whom John was going to prepare the way:
“Here he is, God’s Passover Lamb! He forgives the sins of the world!” John 1:29 (MSG)

Names are essential to our identity.
Naming reveals authority and intimacy.
• To know who we are.
• To know whose we are.
God cares about your name because God cares about your call.
• To hear it.
• To believe it.
• To follow it.
A good name is born when you believe a good God has called you by name.

Why is Zechariah’s mouth only opened after he confirms John’s name? God wants to teach him about faith and trust!
In the midst of difficulty:
Don’t ask why? Rather, ask what?
Embrace difficulty:
Don’t waste an opportunity to grow your faith!
Why the name John?
Zechariah = God remembers.
Elizabeth = God promises.
John = Grace and Mercy.
