Adam responds to Geoffrey Keezer's (Julliard music professor and accomplished pianist) viral Facebook post asserting that today's music students can't be bothered with attending early morning classes, and often use lame excuses for missing things or being unprepared. "How will they be able to make a 6am lobby call on tour?" he asks - Meckler breaks down things that resonate with him as a university professor, and things that seem to be missing the mark, or missing completely from Keezer's rant.

Adam sat down with drummer Jay Epstein, who has been a full time drummer since the late 1960s when he toured with the band Gypsy and rubbed shoulders with people in the Southern California Rock scene like Jimmy Hendricks while going out to see bands with players like Chick Corea, Freddie Hubbard and Miles Davis on his off nights. Adam and Jay talk about the economics of being a full time, life-long musician. Jay gives us three things young musicians should be thinking about as they start their careers, and his three "desert island" albums.
Jay also tells a beautiful story of the impact of hearing John Coltrane as a 17 year old kid that is not to be missed.

Did you hear that Spotify will be paying artists differently in 2024? In this episode, Adam discusses the 3 things Spotify says is "Draining the royalty pool", how Spotify is going to deal with these three types of users, and what the impact of those decisions will be on artists.
Spotify WILL NOT be paying for certain songs. Spotify will require certain songs to be longer than the previous allotment. Spotify is BANNING certain kinds of activity and will be issuing fines to labels/distributors/artists alike. LOTS of important stuff on Spotify's new 2024 Pay Model.

Funky Spud, AKA Shane Cox, went straight from high school in Boise, Idaho to living out of his car and busking across the West Coast until arriving in New Orleans. "As BB King once sang, "the thrill is gone" - I know the feeling. In this episode, I discuss 6 things I do to keep the fire lit. Each career in music is as unique as each person in the field, but we will all experience highs and lows. The key is to stay in the game. I find myself saying this to students frequently: "Whoever stays in the game the longest wins." Like a kid harping "nah nah nah nah boo boo" in that minor third interval, whoever stays in the game the longest implies that there are winners and losers in this thing. And there are. But not in the sports kind of way. Staying in the game means you stay active on the scene, you continue to put out work, you continue to seek greatness through practice and self evaluation. Staying in the game allows your contemporaries time to build their own careers, providing you future opportunities for collaboration.
Staying in the game is the hard part. Practicing is fun when the fire is lit! So this begs the question: How do I keep the fire lit? How do I fall in love with music again?"

With no permit and no plan, the band played regularly there, making enough money to sustain themselves during a global shut-down, and making an unexpected impact on their community in the process.
