In the church through the ages, there has been a quiet consensus that without places of solitude in our lives we cannot live a life of prayer, or by extension, the Spiritual life at all. By solitude what is meant is a time and place alone for God, and God alone. If we are agreed and believe that what God has called us to is a personal relationship with Him, without time to speak with and listen to him that relationship will wither. That is the nature of all relationships, and even more so with Him. If we believe that God is involved in our lives, actively present, then we need a place and time to be attentive to our LORD on a daily basis.

This week continues a series on prayer designed to lead us closer to Christ, As we begin, we ask the Lord to "teach us to pray." It is our first prayer, our beginning. Taken from Luke 11.1, it is a prayer of desire, our desire for Him. This episode also looks at Matthew 6 that of our need of finding a private place for prayer, where we can be alone with the Father.

Morning Mercies is a podcast dedicated to the deepening of trust with God, our maker, through a relationship with Jesus Christ. He has become our Master, our teacher, and so we follow Him with our lives, be they what they are. They are brief, and follow the simple format of scripture, meditation, and prayer.

But I will sing of your strength;
     I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning.
 For you have been to me a fortress
     and a refuge in the day of my distress.

O my Strength, I will sing praises to you,
     for you, O God, are my fortress,
     the God who shows me steadfast love.

what happens when mankind, or an individual forgets who they are and assume they are "gods"? It may sound crazy, but it happens all the time, and is everywhere to be seen. When a person says they are accountable to no one, and make themselves lord over their ways of living, and their decisions, they are according to the Bible, corrupt. Psalm 58 gives us some direction in how to pray when confronted with such people. If you would like to know more, check out the new posting in the Daily Psalms of Morning Mercies.

So often when we are younger, we see life as a filling up. We must get a job. We want to secure for ourselves a place in society. We want to find a spouse, and a place to live. There is nothing wrong with any of these, but we tend to define our lives by these things and relationships. We see ourselves in terms of what we have....Life is not about what we get, but what we have given away in love to others. To be “poured out as a libation” is to find the good life, by letting your life be used by God, and watching it be emptied out in the service of others. Life is not about getting, but about giving.

In remembrance of those who once prayed for us, but who're now in heaven, we look to the word to shape our prayer.

The prayer in Psalm 57 is centered on theGlory of God. The glory of God is virtually impossible to define. In a sense, God’s glory is the magnificence, worth, loveliness, and grandeur of his many perfections. More often, glory communicates God’s special presence, as in the pillars of glory and of fire (Exod. 13:21–22) or the glory that filled the tabernacle (40:34–38). The triune God who is glorious displays his glory, largely through his creation, image-bearers, providence, and redemptive acts. God’s people respond by glorifying him. God receives glory and, through uniting his people to Christ, shares his glory with them—all to his glory. It’s easy to see that a core moment of Jesus public life was his baptism by John, when he heard the affirmation, “You are my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased,” or as some translations say, “…on whom my favor rests.” This is the beginning of Jesus coming out to the people of the Jews. Here he is reminded in a deep part of his soul of who he is. Shortly after this he is led into the desert to be tempted. These temptations are tests designed to move him away from that identity he now carried in his heart. He was tempted to believe he was someone else: You are the one who can turn stones into bread; you are the one jump safely from the temple; you are the one who can make all others bow to your power and authority. To each and everyone of these Jesus says “No! I am the beloved of God.”This week we continue with our series on prayer designed to lead us closer to Christ, This episode we consider the Baptism of Jesus and what that teaches us about prayer and our identity in Christ.

In Psalm 55 David is pushed to the very limits emotionally. His enemy has become loud, and they fill the land, making David feel alone.  However, it is right at this point where David establishes himself as someone who is not typical, for when things are tough, he does not give up or give in, but prays. He prays to God who is for Him. What does he pray for? That God who is righteous would sustain him in the midst of His battle with his enemies. If he is going to make it, it is only in God’s strength, not his own. If you wish to know more, check out the latest podcast just posted on "Morning Mercies. David begins by praying for this situation. He says “save me by your name.” This is a Hebraism, an expression that we may not understand, but is key to David. He is praying not according to any merit within himself, but rather according to the character and will of God. He prays further that God would “vindicate him by (his) might.” This is a recognition that only in God’s power can anything be done to change the situation, that David himself  is not able to do anything. When a person gets to this place of powerlessness in a situation, one can only surrender the future and what happens next, to God.

In this psalm, David introduces us to a person that is often talked about in the wisdom literature. You will find him taking center stage in the Proverbs and the Ecclesiastes. He is the fool...The fool is the person who knows what is wrong and have experienced the consequences of going against God’s will, yet chooses to do otherwise. They do this over and over, and never change the course of their lives. The contrast between the godless and the godly is cast in the picturesque language of an uprooted tree and a fallen tent. In contrast to Him there is David, who is described as an olive tree in the garden of the Lord. He is flourishing, and is full of life. His trust is in the Lord, and he believes that God’s steadfast love will sustain him. If you wish to know more, check out the most recent podcast by Morning Mercies about this Psalm 52.

Praying in Jesus’ name means praying in line with the will of God.

This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us-whatever we ask-we know that we have what we asked of him.

1 John 5.14-15

Do hear the promise in all this? If we pray according to the will of God, He will do what we ask. Why? Because our heart is one with His Son, and His Son is one with Him. When we say that we “pray in the name of Jesus” we are one with Him in what He wills, no matter what that may be. The will of God may be contrary to some strong desire of ours, or to some particular preference, but we surrender these desires and preferences to His will. It is at this very point where we struggle with this promise. We either do not know or do not care what the Lord’s will is, we pray instead for according to our own will.

Our series on prayer is designed to lead us closer to Christ, As we begin, we ask the Lord to "teach us to pray." It is our first prayer, our beginning. Taken from Luke 11.1, it is a prayer of desire, our desire for Him.

There is an end to all things, and what that may be frightens us. We live amongst a people that has lost its hope, and yet knows that there is a limit to the folly that we are living. What is ahead is terrifying, especially when we remember our own demise, our dying.  Psalm 50 speaks of this, and speaks of a path, a way of living where we can find mercy in the end. This forms the substance of this podcast/meditation.

The pervasiveness of temptation and the dynamics of sin are subtle in the day to day situations that we face. We live moment to moment and we do not perceive the choices that we stumble into until they are upon us. Rarely do we plan to be tempted, or do we choose evil, though that can be done. More often we find ourselves being tempted without any anticipation of it at all. It is not that we are helpless, but that we are blind to it until it is right before us. Then we have a choice...Jesus tells us to pray, “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”In regards to temptation, God will lead us to a place where it can be withstood. Life here on this earth will always be a place of temptation, but God by his leading will take us to a new way of living where our “No” to sin is aligned with His “No” to sin. He will get us to that place. Remember that you belong to Him as one of his lambs, and are vulnerable to this world, but he will lead you all the days of your life, and will get you there.

This is the reality, the big dilemma of our lives: we die. What are we to do with this? The Psalmist says it plainly in Psalm 49: God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol, for he will receive me. The only one who can save from death, from the debt we owe to sin, is God, for only he is big enough, only he is good enough. He has done this very thing through Jesus Christ, the Son of God. He died for your sins. He died and rose again to give you life everlasting. Trust Him and not yourself for you salvation.

Someone wise once said that the definition of human should always include something about the need for forgiveness. Certainly it is universal. Everyone of us fail at sometime in our relationships, and the only thing that can keep those relationships stable is the will to forgive. Without it the relationship of marriage has little hope. Void of forgiveness the parent child relationship turns bitter. Most of all, without the reality of forgiveness, the relationship between God and us could not exist...The Lord teaches us to pray about forgiveness because it is a daily need in our relationship with Him. Daily we do our own thing, though it is His will that we are made to follow. Daily we sin, and fall short of His will for us. This is a debt that is too severe for us to handle, for it separates us from our source of life, our source for everything. It is also too immense for us too handle for we do not have the resource that such sin demands-our life. To pay the debt within ourselves means that we would condemn ourselves too eternal judgement. We need the LORD’s forgiveness of our sins.

I am of the belief that there are places in our lives that are holy, filled with the memory of what God has done for us. Most are particular to us as individuals. Psalm forty-eight speaks of such a place for all of God’s children, that is  Zion or Jerusalem. This was where the holy presence of God, YHWH, dwelt. As pilgrims would enter Jerusalem during one of the great feasts of the year, they would sing this psalm even as they entered and took in this blessed city. They would see its beauty, and reflect on its greatness. They would know that all that they saw was a reflection of God’s presence and glory.

Psalm forty-seven is from its start a call to worship the God who is victorious, and victorious for us. He is the one who chose us, and who works for us. He is our future, and His will alone is certain and will be accomplished. There are two things that we need to notice about this psalm, both of which are crucial in the shaping of our praises and how we express them. First, our worship is not without cause, but has its reasons, and we need to know them. Second, our praise, worship, and thanksgiving needs to be expressed, not merely held within our minds or hearts. The later flows out of the first, and both are inseparable from the other.

One thing that happens as we begin to pray is that we become intensely aware of our neediness. None of us are an island, and none of us can make it without the help of others. Still, the reality is that there are some needs that are beyond the help of all others…unless they’re God, the Creator. He is our being or reality, and only in Him can we find the answer to the deep needs of the soul. Jesus tells us to pray each day for these needs, for those things which sustain our living, those things we need simply to survive. Bread is a symbol of these needs. Without these things our bodies, minds, and spirits wither, or shrivel up.

If you would like to know more of Jesus' teaching about praying for our daily bread, check out the new podcast on "Morning Mercies." In the midst of such trouble God does not leave us alone, but stands with us, and protects us. To say he is a very present help is to assert that in that place of trial or test, God is there with us. He does not hope the best for us, or route for us and cheer us on in that hard place, but he enters into it himself. That ought to give us confidence.

The Psalmist says in Psalm 46,

“…we will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling.”

In Israel the monarchy was closly associated with God Himself, for though he had a representative on Earth, a man like David or Solomon, he was their true and only Sovereign. Scholars are split on how to understand  Psalm 45,  how to apply it to our situation today. One way that seems most appropriate is to use  the figure of Christ as the interpretive key. Christians often do this with the Old Testament, for they understand Christ as the figure the old covenant scriptures are pointing to, from Genesis to the last of the prophets. Christ is the fulfillment of all the promises of the Old Testament.

The idea of Kingdom is somewhat foreign to us who live in the United States, but the core of what is a King is authority. By that what we mean is that their will is asserted as that which is determinative, or decisive. The will of the King in an absolute monarchy is the law or reality that everyone had to live by, for they were the authority of the realm. To pray “your Kingdom come” is to ask God to make His will supreme, the reality that we live by.

This week continues a new series on prayer designed to lead us closer to Christ.  We pray to the Lord "Your Kingdom come, your will be done..." This is key for our praying as Christ prayed, Taken from Luke 11.1, it is a prayer of desire, our desire for Him.

Remembering God’s involvement in our past is important for us who are on the path of living for God. In Psalm 44, the Psalmist recalls how God had delivered their forefathers from their situation. This was the distant past, and by doing so they were asserting that God’s hand has been upon them from before their being born. Then the Psalmist recites the nearer past, how God had saved them from their foes, their enemies. This is making it personal. Not only was God with their families in ages past, but he is with us even now.

Psalm 43 is a song that is completely honest in regards to circumstances, but then it sees God in it all. It may be confusing, but there is a place for faith in all that is hard, and that is what the Psalmist chooses to settle his heart on. This is what makes this song of praise so triumphant, for he sees what God is doing. The Lord is driving him step by step to the ultimate refuge for any believer in their time of testing- the Word of the God.

Send out your light and your truth;
let them lead me;
let them bring me to your holy hill
and to your dwelling!

In times of conflict, it is often what we say that leaves the greatest wounds. In the Psalms, David finds himself being maligned and libeled grievously, and he finds himself wanting to retaliate in kind. Instead, he holds back his tongue, and seeks God. Could this be a path for us? Is this something that God would have us follow? This meditation on Psalm 39 explores this is a way that makes the scripture accessible and full of application. The Psalms, if they are anything, are honest. There is no hiding in the Psalms. David does not hint at his emotions, does not pretty up his langusage when he is hurting. He is not shy about sharing his thoughts, even when they are filled with doubts, or grief, or shame. He simply tells God how it is with Him.  This is how it should be. In our worship, in our prayers, we must start with how it is with us, how we feel, how we are thinking. We can not permit ourselves to play the toxic game of denial when it comes to our struggles, our sins, or our woundedness. Before God, we must always be honest.

Delight speaks of the aspiration and preoccupation of the heart. This delight can be captured by many things, but it is made for only one thing-Him! God! Christ! It is the very nature of sin to deceive the sinner. In Psalm 36 sin is personified and speaks to the heart of the sinner. It speaks lies that if believed will lead a person to believe they are above everyone else, and that there shamefulness will never be found out. Here the deceived accepts the lie that God is not real, or even more so, that he is irrelevant. He fears only one thing, not satisfying his own twisted desire. Fear of God is no where in his thinking.

What is the answer to being deceived by sin?

Only one thing, to delight ourselves in the "steadfast love of the Lord, by which we live and move and have our being. Morning Mercies has just posted a devotion on Psalm 36. Check it out. Now on all podcast platforms.

Accusations! Distrust! Hate! Violence! Does not that describe the public environment of today? It’s on the right, its on the left. It’s on the news, we read it on bumper stickers, we plant banners in our front yards all in the promotion of our view or our group. Is there another way? Yes, there is, and I believe Psalm 35 is steeped in that path.  Check out Morning Mercies new devotional  podcast on this Psalm and be encouraged.

Evil in the world, and the subsequent suffering, is a question we all must face. How could a loving God allow for such things? Psalm 34 tells us that the answer to the issue is not found in denial, but in the embracing of the truth that we find ourselves in,  so that God can be found to be working in our circumstance.   The New Testament points us to the person of Jesus Christ, the Son of God who came to be with us in our suffering.  Check out the devotion recently posted on Psalm 34 for what the Bible says about this reality of our lives.

Worship is a main concern for the Psalms, because praise of God fits the life of those who belong to Him. Psalm 33 is all about worship. We worship God because his love fills the Earth, or everywhere we look his love is in evidence. We cannot escape it.

Introduction for Podcast

Welcome!

My name is Michael Mullen, and I am your host for Morning Mercies. The book of Psalms in the Old Testament of the Bible is given to us by God to teach us how to pray, to have conversation with Him. For people of the Chrstian faith this has often been where we start when we desire to pray, and for good reason.

The Pslams may be the most accessible of all the scriptures. Though inspired by the Spirit of God, though drenched in rich theology, they are human through and through. Where do we find such joy, such lament, such anger as we do in these songs of worship? Where do we find such intimacy spoken to God as this? I believe that there is a brutal honesty in these scriptures that we need as we come to God in conversation. As we pray them, we cannot hide, for they are meant to reveal our deepest selves to Him. They are forever turning us back to Him. It is for these reasons that the Church, almost from its beginning, has made it a practice to read these Psalms as a daily discipline.

And it is for these purposes that this podcast is shared with you. Morning Mercies is a set of daily readings and prayers that focuses on the Psalms as a vehicle of letting God speak to us, as well as a place of learning how to speak to Him. We learn to pray by praying. There is no other way. Every morning we will read one psalm, share a short meditation on what this song means,and then we will pray. Its that simple.

The key is to do it daily, at a selected time, someplace quiet or private. This is how we form a holy habit, and how we may begin to hear the LORD speak to us. It maybe helpful to keep a journal to record your thoughts and feeling as we do this together.

I look forward to sharing my mornings with you as we draw closer to Him. As we get ready to begin this journey of prayer, I want to share with you some words from Psalm 42.

Deep calls to deep
in the roar of your waterfalls;
all your waves and breakers
have swept over me.

By day
the LORD directs his love,
at night
his song is with me—
a prayer to the God of my life.

May the God of your life bless you. Amen.
