This song is such a beautiful, soothing rendition by Jimi Hendrix, who was more known for his wild guitar solos and performances. He once set his guitar on fire on stage after playing a performance.
This song centers around a central theme of impermanence and change, which I think I really crucial themes. The chord progression itself was still a monster of a thing to learn and has presented a challenge to guitar players for decades.
In this video, I give my humble cover of this amazing progression. You must like it by force. 😂

Hi, everyone. It really has been a long time since I've been here, and it feels so good to be here again.
This particular post shows me playing the electric guitar amongst a group of friends. The song we were playing is a very popular one in Nigeria here, Melo Melo by Olamide.
An interesting thing about this video is that it was recorded during our final exams in medical school. I just finished my final exams in medical school exactly a week ago today. It's an experience that was unbelievably physically and mentally draining(3 weeks of back to back exams), and I was essentially on drugs throughout the exams.
By the end of the second week of exams, we were all so fatigued that we needed something to spark joy amidst the trials, disregarding for a moment that we still had a week of exams left. For me, that something is almost always music or swimming. This time, it was music.
If you've gotten to this point, you can tell by now the need for the impromptu music we played on this day. It's a week after the exams and I'm still on drugs. I'm feeling much better now though. I HOPE Y'ALL ARE DOING MUCH BETTER THAN I.

For this week's entry, the piece I have decided to present is inspired by a poem I recently came across on the 'Blockchain Poets' community. The poem was written by user @olugashalom .
I found the poem to be quite precise and relatable.

At one point or the other, I think a good amount of us must have had our trust broken by platonic friends and colleagues, and even more painfully, our intimate partners. This pain usually cuts deep and can take a while to heal. One of the songs I've been repeating recently came to my remembrance after reading the poem.
The song is ALL WE EVER DO IS SAY GOODBYE by one of my favorite musical artists, John Mayer.
In this song, John is essentially talking to a past lover who is asking for him back, and telling her that why should he come back just to have his heart broken again because all they ever do is say goodbye.
There is a guitar solo on the original song which I have omitted here because my tools are limited. Lol.

This is a video post from me where I do a short slow blues improvisation in the key of E. My main inspiration for this style of acoustic improvisation is Tommy Emmanuel. If you do not know him, you should totally check him out. He is one of the greatest players to ever handle the acoustic guitar.
Given the fact that I'm from Nigeria, blues music is not really appreciated as much as afrobeats over here, so the only place where I get to freely express my love for the blues is on the online space with other like-minded people like YOU.

This is my entry for Hive Open Mic week 192. The theme is GRATEFUL. I have typed the theme in all caps because because I truly have a lot to be grateful for as I reminisce about the past year or so.
July last year to July this year was the worst 12 months of my life so far. I'm just 25, I know. My mental health and sanity plunged to depths I didn't even know it could descend to. Around sometime in March, I was actually recommended to see a psychiatrist by one of my teachers in medical school, I refused. By August, I overcame all the trials I had before. I spent the next two months recalibrating and regaining my sanity, and now? I'm as fine as the sun in the sky or the breeze drifting by.
How fitting is it then that my next post in this community after not posting for about 51 weeks (basically a full year) is on the theme of GRATEFUL.
I will be performing a song I have loved for a long time: GRATEFUL by ASA.

Misty is a song that was originally composed by the great Errol Garner. He only composed the instrumental though. The story goes that idea for the instrumental came to him while on an airplane flight. He had to keep muttering it to himself till he could land and record it since he couldn't write music at the time. lyrics were later added by Johnny Burke.
Perhaps the person that then popularized the song is none other than Ella Fitzgerald, the jazz queen. Misty is one of those songs that has lasted decades and doesn't show any sign of fading away anytime soon.

I went to one of my classmate's place sometime last week. He is a producer and a rapper. He started showing me a good number of his beats and I was just riffing and freestyling over them to the best of my ability.
One of the beats was titled BANKU, this one you are now listening to. I played some guitar over it without any prior knowledge of what key it was in or how long the track is. This is the result of that experiment. I hope you enjoy this very short tune.

I've been out of commision for a while. Medical school will do that to ya😂. I was scrolling through my Instagram page and I came across this video. This was the very first video I ever shared on this platform.
This video is the reason I did not quit Hive then. I remember texting the person that introduced me to Hive then, @jaydr, that I was tired of the platform and my posts weren't getting upvoted. I stayed up late to finish up a freelance writing job I had to complete. I checked my peakd page at around 3am to notice that the video had been upvoted significantly. I texted my mentor immediately to say I wasn't quitting again😂.
I am glad I didn't quit this platform because it later grew to mean more to me that just a money-making platform, despite the fact that medial school has had me in a chokehold and I haven't nearly been consistent on the platform.

I am an ardent lover of the Blues. I have loved the blues since I started playing the guitar about six years ago. The calm, emotional nature of the blues has helped me cope with the stress on medical school. I'm in my final year now with a few months to go, and I am sure that I would've lost my sanity late last year when I wrote my third and penultimate professional exam.

This is a short clip of me messing around on a bluesy kinda progression in church on Sunday. This was of course , after the main service had ended. I haven't been able to practice guitar as much as I normally did for the better part of this year. This has been due to many reasons, school being a major one. Playing in church on Sunday is really the only sure time weekly that I know I'll get to play, so I seize it well.

This is Hive Open Mic week 141 and the theme for this week is "Winter." When I saw the theme the first thing that came to the fore of mind is this incredibly awesome animation titled "Frozen." Frozen is about a girl who was born with magic powers to control ice and cold and how those powers affected her, her sister, and her entire community. It also showed how he dealt with her many fears and insecurities about her powers, and how she later learned to tame and gain control of those powers. I recommend the animation to anyone who hasn't seen it.
This particular song is titled "Antohallan," and if I remember correctly, it is the first or second song that was played in the movie. I really like this song so much and it has a lullaby-ish feel to it. The lyrics seem quite deep, but I'm really not sure exactly what the lyrics mean.

Cuando vi el tema, lo primero que me vino a la mente fue esta animación increíblemente impresionante titulada "Frozen". Frozen trata sobre una niña que nació con poderes mágicos para controlar el hielo y el frío y cómo esos poderes la afectaron a ella, a su hermana y a toda su comunidad. También mostró cómo lidió con sus muchos miedos e inseguridades sobre sus poderes, y cómo más tarde aprendió a domar y controlar esos poderes. This is a short video of a short progression I played on the fly. I've been seeing that brand of guitar online lately but this is the first time that I have had the pleasure of playing this brand of guitar and I really like it. The tone is smooth and woody, it's also very clean. The action is just right and the strings and neck are perfect.
As per the progression, it is in the key of F sharp, but since the capo is on the second fret, the chord shapes are in E major.

This video shows me playing the electric guitar in my church on Sunday. I hadn't really played the guitar well in two months because of school and exams, so this was particularly satisfying for me. Also because the exams were over and I had more peace of mind😂.
In the video, we were having choir rehearsals and practicing a Yoruba song that we wanted to perform next Sunday. I had a motif or a recurring lick I was playing during the song. Then there would also be a space for me to solo somewhere towards the end.

It has been a while since I posted any music here on this platform. I had exams in school. Because of the exams, I removed the first two strings from my guitar so I wouldn't be as addicted to picking it up and practicing for hours when I should be reading😂. The exams finally ended a couple for days ago and I played a little tune on the guitar with my stressed body yesterday and recorded it with my phone.
The song is titled "Your body is a wonderland" by John Mayer. I am a big fan of John Mayer and this is one of his most popular songs from his first studio album, "Room for Squares." I edited the recording over a picture of John Mayer and the song title using Inshot. This is Hive Open Mic week 126 and the theme is "Trusting in the process." For this theme, the song I have chosen to present is a wonderful song written by the amiable John Mayer titled "waiting on the world to change."
This song talks about how his generation is kind of hopeless and unable to effect a lot of change in the world because the generation in power has chosen to make it theirs to the detriment of others.
How I connected it to the theme for the week is that the lyrics towards the end of the song talk about his generation ruling the population in the near future. This sorta points to him knowing that the world will change someday. He trusts that however slow, the world will be a better place in the near future.

This is a very short video playing a loop of beat I made on my laptop using FL studio. I would advise you to listen to it with headphones, if possible.
I was simply messing around and experimenting with sounds on the DAW when I came across a certain piano sound that sounded interesting to me. In that moment, I decided I had to do something with it and this is the short loop that was birthed.
While creating this, the production of that bass sound was particularly tricky and kinda difficult, but I achieved it in the end.
I imagine this kind of beat would fit a rap verse very well.

This is a short video of me freestyling on the guitar.
So, I have a guitar student and was teaching him when an attempt to show him a way of mugging strings and introducing some percussive element into strumming turned into a full fledged video that he insisted on filming with his phone.
Another thing I was also trying to show him was thumb placement behind the fretboard to achieve as much support as possible. I also tried to demonstrate the fact that when he advances more, he might want to start playing with his thumb over the top of the fretboard too.
Most of my short solos are based off the minor pentatonic scale of Am.

This is my second presentation in this Aftitunes community and I am excited to bring you all this wonderful tune titled Àwé by the goddess, Asa. Although, I'm not sure how wonderful my performance of the song is. Lol.
This song is entirely in Asa's native tongue which is the Yoruba language, indigenous to the Southwest region of Nigeria.
If I'm being entirely honest, I'm not quite sure what exactly this song means and the exact message it passes across. Sill, I love the song a lot.
I love the chord progression and the subtlety and gentleness of the instruments. It is such a wonderful display of vocal skill by Asa also. I hope you like it.

This video shows me playing, albeit imperfectly, a short blues shuffle freestyle feel.
One major influence for this style of play is Tommy Emmanuel. I have come to the conclusion that the blues is my favorite genre of music. The goal now is to build my level of playing to you the level of appreciation I have for the genre. It is not going to be easy or spontaneous, but I am definitely willing to put in the work and I hope it all turns out fine.

When talking about emotion, there's a while variety of them. However, I believe that one particular set of emotions that every one of us has felt at one point or the other are those relating particularly to love. Happy, sad, broken, elated, frustrated, confused, are just some of the emotions that love makes us feel.
The emotions that Bill Withers tries to portray in this wonderful song are those of longing, sadness, reminiscence, and hurt, among others. The exchange rate of naira to the dollar plummeted recently till it reached 710 naira to a dollar. It has however decreased a bit and is around 652 naira to a dollar currently. At this present rate, 20 dollars would be thirteen thousand and forty naira(#13,040). This amount of money is more than enough for me to have a fun weekend.
I am an introvert who actually loves adventure such as travelling, going to the movies, discovering new places, and foods, sports, and other such stuff.
However, most of what I would describe as fun are mostly activities that can be performed indoors. Therefore, it really wouldn't take much to have a weekend I can consider fun by my standards.
On to how I would spend the money for the weekend. One activity that would definitely be outdoor for me would be swimming. I love swimming, and I am actually quite good at it, and I enjoy doing it so much. I am a member of the University of Ibadan swimming team. The entry fee to most pools in Ibadan is a thousand naira. If we also estimate that I spend another thousand naira to and from the pool, that means I've spent two thousand naira. One activity down.
After that, any other activity would be indoors. The rest of the money would essentially be spent on buying food, food, food. Food to keep me company while I do the the other activities. Chicken Republic's burger is 1,800 naira. Their plate of rice and chicken is 900 naira. Two plates would then go for 1,800 naira. Ice cream from Cold Stone café is 3,500 naira. All of this adds up to 7100 naira.
All of this food would be steadily and slowly making its way into my stomach while I perform activities such as playing the guitar, keyboard, making beats on my laptop, and watching a boatload of movies. Music is very therapeutic and enjoyable for me and I mostly recharge myself by being alone.
My favorite series of all time is 24. That series is everything a movie should be. I'm personally recommending it to anyone looking for something to fill the excess time provided by the strike.
Food, music, movies,and swimming - components of a perfectly fun weekend for me.

This is Hive Open Mic week 119 and the theme for the week is 'Prejudice.'
Upon seeing the theme, I had a hard time figuring out a song that went perfectly with the theme. Just today, I was discussing the state of my country Nigeria with some of my guys and one of the topics that came up was the incessant tribalistic and religious killings going on in the country, mostly in the Northern part of the country.
While the discussion was going on, I remembered a song I wrote towards the end of 2020 for an online Instagram contest where we were asked to write a song depicting the state of Nigeria at the time following the protests that occured at the time. The title of the song is "Nigeria: The country with potential."
The idea for the song was borne out of the idea that I had heard all my life that Nigeria was the giant of Africa, a mine of countless resources. Yet, the current state of the country does not depict that fact. The verse of the song addresses the fact that the country is killing its own citizens due to the religious and tribal divides. This is ridiculous in my opinion, and I think any sane person would agree with me. Anyways, it's the whole helpless feeling I had when I wrote the song that I transferred into ok the soul of the song.

I probably spent a couple of months learning this piece. I really love the bluesy feel of the piece. I think it's simply genius.
Tommy Emmanuel is one of my earliest influences on the guitar, after Estas Tonne. I have come a long way since I started learning to play and I grateful for every step of the way.

This is a short video in which I play a simple jazzy chord progression.
The progression consists of just four chords. Bmaj7, Cdimiminished, C#min7, and F#13. These are sometimes called altered chords.
I have been veering a bit from my normal path of blues, rock, and pop. Not veering. Just adding other styles into the mix. I would like to be a very versatile guitar player who is able to play multiple genres and styles because all genres fascinate and interest me. I hope to be a well-rounded musician someday.
I think jazz is the ultimate form of music. The judgemental ideal. I think anyone who is very good at jazz can say that they are really good at music. The sheer amount of complexity embedded in jazz is jaw-dropping. I am so glad to have begun this journey to mastery.

In this video, I try to do a freestyle of fingerstyle blues. I say try to because, well, it was quite tough. Lol.
The amount of coordination that is required to play something like this is wildly phenomenal. I reckon it would take years of practice to be able to pull off something like this very well without any mistake.
The major influence in my learning of fingerstyle guitar and the reason I even started in the first place is Tommy Emmanuel, an Australian guitarist. He is regarded by many, including me, as the greatest acoustic fingerstyle guitarist. Along the line, I started to discover many other amazing guitarists such as Sungha Jung, Igor Presnyakov, Joe Satriani, Phil Collen, Andy McKee, Mike Dawes, and daddystovepipe. The list goes on and on.

I particularly love the oldies vibe of the song and how perfectly Adèle exécutés it with her voice and tone. The rhythm of the song is just perfect.
I love this song because it's one of Adele's few love songs. In the song, Adele basically begs her lover to let her be his one and only love. This is a short video that I recorded alongside my rendition for the Hive Open Mic event this week. After recording the video for the weekly contest, I was just jamming and decided to record this too.
This is just an instrumental. The progression being played in the song is a blues progression, although it could also be used in a country music context. I edited the video using Inshot and added the names of the main chords I used in the video. Of course, there's a little bit of chromaticism involved too, for a bluesier feel.
In the future, I hope to gather enough money to buy an electric guitar, amplifier, and effects pedal. Then, I can record progressions like this, loop them, and solo over them. Hopefully, that time comes soon.

The song talks about him not wanting his parents to grow old so they can continue teaching him about life. He mentioned in the song that he's "so scared of getting older and that he's only good at being young." Essentially, he wants the train of time to come to a halt.
The guitar part of this song is in the key of D major and is very technical when you analyse it up close.

I changed my acoustic guitar strings!
This always feels like a chore because I don't really like doing it. But I recognize the fact that it is a necessary evil, so I do it regularly anyways.
I try to change my strings often to be keep the sound of the guitar fresh and awesome. I change my strings at least once every 2 months, on average.
After changing the strings, I usually play for a while to try and get the strings to really stretch out well and get used to the guitar.

In February, a writing club which I belong to in school- Quills club- hosted an open house. I was asked to perform at the open house and the song chosen by the primus of the club for me to perform was this song- Shallow by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.
Before then,I hadn't noticed the song. Sometimes, when I think of how much great music is out there, yet to be discovered, I am just stunned. I remember feeling this way when I recently discovered the band, Polyphia, and the violinist, Lindsey Stirling.
Anyways, I was simply amazed by how simple and amazing the song was. I performed it that night alongside Elvis Presley's "Can't help falling in love with you."
In the video here, I play the first verse of the song which is the male part. The song is a duet.

Hi, everyone.
This is Hive Open Mic week 113. The theme is "infantil" which means "childish" in English. Another wonderful theme and a great opportunity to harness and hone people's creativity.
Immediately, I saw the theme, the first thing that came to my mind was a song I started writing about 3 months ago that I haven't finished yet. The song is titled "To be a child again."
The song was borne out of the desire to go back to that child-like innocence and live unburdened and unbothered.
There's a lot of issues and worries that bother us as adults. People wanting to move ahead at the expense of other people.
Maybe if we all possessed child-like attitudes to a certain degree, we would be able to coexist peacefully in this world with each other!

Considering the theme for the week, I decided to do a song that's entirely in my local language, Yoruba, from Southwestern Nigeria.
The title of the song is Arirarira which literally means "we will see." The song is about the proverbial judgement day which is about the fact that all of our deeds on earth will be examined and judged thoroughly that day, good or bad. The song later goes on to encourage people to do good deeds in life so that they are remembered for good in posterity.

Today is Sunday. Sabbath day.
I went to my home church for the cutest time in a while today because they requested my presence to come okay the guitar to the songs that would be present by the children. That's right. Because children's day was celebrated in church today. I had so much fun.
I had not really played the guitar much in a while because of school but I still tried my best anyways.
After service, I was just playing and messing around in the guitar. I really missed that guitar. And I hadn't really played electric guitar in a while. This is mostly because I do not own one. If I did, you can be sure that I would play the hell out of it.
The noise in the background of the video is the sound of the typical "service after service" in church. People greeting each other and regaling themselves with tales. Of how their week went, among other things.

Swimming has been a passion of mine for over four years now. I have improved so much within this timeframe and I am very proud of myself.
I swim primarily because it's fun. It is also one of the, if not the best forms of exercise out there. The best thing is that you don't even really notice that you're exercising because you're so focused on the fun part of it. At least, that's until a few hours later when you wake up in bed at home with a few aching muscles.😅
It could also be life-saving. If not for oneself, but for the fact that someone's life might depend on you having that skill someday.
Swimming is a really cool sport and I think everyone should try it.

Wow. The very first prompt this week is a very strong one. I have had to go through my memories and try to figure out exactly what and what I would like to change of given the opportunity. It has been quite a nostalgic experience.

I have done a lot of thinking and, while I had not had it entirely easy, as most people will testify, there is little I would really want to change eagerly. I haven't always made the right decisions, but those decisions have culminated in me being here in this moment, still living my life, typing a post here on Hive for you all to read.
However, for the sake of this prompt,and the fact that we have to write something, I would. So, hypothetically, coz it's not really possible, if I could go back to the past for ten minutes, I would change my course of study from medicine to music. This does not mean that I am entirely unhappy the way I am currently and I would venture into the belly of Hades itself to see this done. No. It simply means that maybe if I could have changed it. Maybe. Maybe, I should have. But then again, no one really knows how that would turn out.
I was in science class in school. Of course, that's where all the brilliant kids were. We were told arts class was for those who couldn't cope with the pressures and the expectations of the science class. The dull ones. What a lie that was.
Years down the line now, I can see how much of a fallacy that was. I now recognize and appreciate the special kind of brilliance and creativity it takes to create art that people love and relate to. Years down the line, I am discovering that most of the activities that I really enjoy doing the most are of the arts variety. Music. Writing, Sports, especially swimming. Drawings, paintings, and sculptures(even though I can't really do these, I still value and cherish them a lot). Travelling and seeing new, exciting places. I am probably missing out something else. This is not to say that I completely detest the medical profession. No, I don't. After all, I am in my final year and I haven't repeated a single class so far. Some amount of interest is necessary for that to happen. It's just that medicine is a very jealous course and it is really hard to combine it with some of these other activities and find time for them.
I am currently in my final year of medical school. By the time I am graduating next year, I would have spent almost 8 years in school. Combining that with the 1 year of internship and 1 year of youth service. That makes 10 years.
With 10 minutes m, I could restructure the chronicles of the next ten years.

This video here shows me just having fun with 2 other guys in my church after service a couple years back. Someone on drums and someone on the keyboard. I also remember that that was the first time I used an effects pedal ever. I felt on top of the world. I felt like a true guitarist.
