Reality Checks with Staci-lee The Government of Sint Maarten has decided to kill ALL their wild monkeys as a form of population control. Horrified by this policy a letter was sent to the government in March 2023 from the world’s leading primate and animal welfare organizations. The letter had 75 signatories offering their support in an effort to halt the death sentence. Born Free USA is leading the effort to save the monkeys. The alternative proposed would be to sterilize the monkeys, at no cost to taxpayers and let the monkeys live out their lives while going extinction naturally as breeding would cease. As of today these groups are still awaiting a response and the fate of the monkeys hangs in the balance though the government seems to have started the killing already. 🚚 The circus, now called a roadside zoo, still travels and exhibits the elephants after animal circus acts were banned in Slovakia in 2019.

🏞️ The elephants are kept in a small enclosure most of the time, locked in a truck during travel or exhibitions.

🍏 Visitors can interact with the elephants by feeding them fruits and vegetables, but the elephants' access to proper food and water is limited.

🧠 The elephants exhibit stereotypical behavior, aggression toward each other, and signs of mental distress resulting from the cruel training they underwent.

💪 Veronika's campaign aims to re-home Mara and Baby in a sanctuary, advocating for a change in current laws to prevent similar animal abuse.

In December 2012, a German Shorthaired Pointer called Angel was stolen after being exercised with the owner’s other dogs. The dog was about to be loaded into the owner’s car when she saw a white van leave the area and no Angel in sight. Unfortunately in spite of the great efforts being made by the owner, Angel was never found. It was at the height of this search in March 2013 that Arnot Wilson, director of the Dog Union, saw a graphic about pet theft on the social media feed of an online pet retail website. This lead to the founding of Pet Theft Awareness by him and co founder Richard Jordan.Yvonne catches up with Richard Jordan and discovers the extent of the pet theft problem in the UK.

Ross Mill Farm is the major foster care facility for PPN, directly placing over 1,000 pet pigs in new forever homes as of Spring 2018. She is also the Founding Board Member and Secretary to The Duchess Fund, which is a medical database exclusively for pet pigs.

Judy has knowledge, experience and an extensive background in First Nations land rights/specific claims, human rights, children & family jurisdiction, emergency management and supports a wide range of issues including climate action, justice reform, environmental & animal rights.

Currently she continues to work with several Assembly of First Nations Chiefs Committees at the national level and current boards include Global Indigenous Council and Rural British Columbia. We are speaking about the wolf today because its continued survival is dependent on us. Two million wolves cohabited North America with the native people before European colonization. Now it is estimated fewer than 6,000 wolves exist in the contiguous United States and only occupy 10% of its historic range. Wolves are a keystone species and are a vital and necessary part of an ecosystem. But they are under attack and are in need of federal protection.

Host, Billie Groom chats with Leif about the on-going efforts of his organization in Sumatra to save the rain forest, provide resources and skills to the native communities, and establish a sanctuary for critically endangered orangutans, the “persons of the forest.”

The Orangutan Project was established in 1998 by founder and world-renowned orangutan expert, Leif Cocks, as a result of his almost 30 year career working with orangutans. Leif is a passionate campaigner for orangutans and has been the leader of The Orangutan Project since its inception.

Leif’s years in the field have earned him respect within the conservation field. He has been a key player in developing conservation plans for orangutans and influencing positive change for orangutan protection and survival. This includes the first ever successful reintroduction of the zoo-born orangutan. This respect has given The Orangutan Project world standing in conservation.

A small population biologist and curator by trade; Leif has several academic qualifications, including a Masters of Science studying orangutans. He is a seasoned public speaker and has published several papers on orangutans in peer-reviewed journals. Leif is also the author of the books Orangutans and their Battle for Survival (2002) and, Amazon best seller, Orangutans My Cousins, My Friends(2016) and Finding our Humanity (2019).

Amongst many roles, Leif is currently: a Technical Advisor for PT Alam Bukit Tigapuluh (a company leasing and protecting rainforest), Head of International Elephant Project, head of International Tiger Project, Vice President of Orang Utan Republik Foundation and on the Advisory Board for Forest, Nature and Environment of Aceh.

In respect to his professional, animal, human and financial management skills, Leif has been the longest standing member of the Australasian Species Management Program; a Quarantine-Approved Assessor; Zoo Husbandry Adviser; Zoo Accreditation Officer; UN GRASP in-country point of contact, an International Species Coordinator, International Studbook Keeper and the Chair of a World Aquarium and Zoo Association global conservation program.

Today, we welcome back Leif Cocks, founder of the International Elephant Project, based in Sumatra. The International Elephant Project (IEP) is a not-for-profit project for elephant conservation, rainforest protection and local community partnerships, in order to protect and save the entire ecosystem and biodiversity of habitats shared by elephants.

The Sumatran elephant is critically endangered. The current population is estimated at 1,200-1,500. Threats to their survival is in part due to habitat loss, where Sumatra has experienced one of the highest rates of deforestation within the Asian elephant’s habitat range as well as human-elephant conflict because as plantations and fields move into elephant habitat, elephant food sources and migration routes are compromised. As elephants looking for food raid crops, retaliation killing occurs.

For the past two decades, Dr. James Danoff-Burg’s research, teaching, and conservation implementation actions have focused on documenting and then reducing the negative effects of human activities on biodiversity in 36 countries through community-based conservation interventions.

He is the Director of Conservation at The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens in Palm Desert, California, working on projects with an emphasis on North America and African ecosystem conservation through engaging the people in the areas surrounding the projects.

James has been a consultant on sustainable community-based conservation to the governments of countries as diverse as the Dominican Republic, Cambodia, United Arab Emirates, India, and Japan. Integral to all of these efforts is his deep commitment to inspiring hope for the future across the 17 countries in which he has worked. His experience in community-driven education, strategic planning, evaluation, community-based conservation, biodiversity surveys, and public outreach have positioned him as a global leader in conservation, education, and strategy.

He has been a professor and researcher at Columbia University for 14 years and currently has an appointment at California State University San Marcos. James has also been Director of Conservation Education at the San Diego Zoo and an independent researcher and evaluator for zoos and aquariums around the world. He is Founding Director of Helping Rhinos USA, a conservation organization focused on supporting community-based conservation and education solutions to the epidemic of poaching that is affecting the populations of Black and Southern White rhinos in Africa.

The importance of hope for the future of conservation is the central idea in all of Dr. Danoff-Burg’s work. When people – from early childhood to community elders – learn about, develop, and implement successful approaches and tools, they are empowered to live sustainably with our rich natural world.

Power loss affects farming. It’s a topic the public who buy meat don’t generally consider. The huge power needed for factory farms also reduces the availability for private homes. Humane Society International South Africa raises the concern of the farm animals suffering in slaughterhouses when the power goes off and the efforts to address these issues reduce animal suffering by training chefs in plant based sustainable cuisine.

The Heber Wild Horse Herd in Arizona is unique because they truly live wild and free. They have been free from roundups, free from being sent to slaughter and free from being experimented on with fertility drugs PZP and Gonacon. Under pressure from ranchers the Forest Service plans to roundup most of this herd and use drugs on the few remaining. End goal is removal of all horses with most going to foreign slaughter houses. Some of these sentient beings were traumatically separated from their family. No longer were they to live a life in the wild as intended but a life in servitude to humans who exploited each elephant until the end.

For nearly a century our National Parks were considered the jewel of the country. The parks were suppose to be a safe haven for both animals who lived there and humans who visited. That has now changed, without public input. The park service now allows hunts, essentially trophy hunts, with outside hunters not rangers doing the killing. This goes against all that the park system was suppose to stand for.

Today, we will be discussing the magnificent rhino, with our guest, Simon Jones, CEO of Helping Rhinos. Helping Rhinos is predominantly based in Africa. Their focus is on helping the species survive at sustainable levels by improving protection, care, and welfare of the rhino in its natural habitat as well as to forge significant partnerships with successful organizations.

Helping Rhinos is celebrating ten years of protecting rhinos in their natural habitat. Its start began in March of 2012, when Simon learned of the shocking poaching of three rhinos at the Kariega Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape of South Africa.

It had been just two years prior that Simon had spent six weeks on a conservation project at the Kariega Game Reserve and became acquainted with a rhino named Thandi. Thandi was one of those three rhinos who fortunately survived the poaching incident. After enduring many operations, she has given birth to four calves in the past ten years. A remarkable story that speaks volumes of Helping Rhinos’ dedication to ensure the future of the magnificent rhino.

Yvonne talks with Duncan McNair from Save The Asian Elephants (S.T.A.E.). Save The Asian Elephants is a not for profit association of prominent professionals, experts and campaigners that informs public opinion on the brutal capture, beating, poaching and abuse for festivals and tourism of these wondrous but beleaguered creatures and the plunder of their habitat; and exerts influence on governments, politicians and the tourist industry to adopt solutions it advances.

Nicole speaks with Jodie Wiederkehr, founder of Chicago Alliance for Animals. Chicago Alliance for Animals is a volunteer grassroots animal advocacy organization that began in 2015.

The first goal of Chicago Alliance for Animals was to ban horse carriages in downtown Chicago, and in 2017, the organization began diligently documenting how the horses were treated by their handlers as well as the horses’ workloads by volunteers spending countless hours observing the horses. With this documentation and persistence, an official horse carriage ban went into effect in January of 2021.

Below is a quote by Jodie that represents the effectiveness and efficiency of Chicago Alliance for Animals:

“As you likely know, we banned horse carriages and shut down puppy mill pet stores in the 3rd largest city in the U.S. without any paid staff, any accidents or fatalities, any celebrity support and with very little funding.”

Breaking The Chains International was founded by British Army veteran Tom S-N who made it his life’s mission to make the world a safer place for any and all animals.

After Russian forces invaded Ukraine on February the 24th in 2022, Tom and his close friend Steve put their extensive military and combat experience to use again by entering Ukraine with the sole purpose of extracting animals in desperate need from the conflict zones. Nikita interviews Dr. Lori Marino, an expert in animal behaviour and intelligence and the founder of The Whale Sanctuary Project that is working on building a seaside sanctuary for captive cetaceans. Want to learn about the fascinating mirror recognition test in bottlenose dolphins or the controversial dolphin assisted therapies?

Lori Marino is a neuroscientist and expert in animal behavior and intelligence, formerly on the faculty of Emory University. Lori received her Ph.D. in biopsychology in 1995, and is internationally known for her work on the evolution of the brain and intelligence in dolphins and whales (as well as primates and farmed animals).

She has published over 130 peer-reviewed scientific papers, book chapters, and magazine articles on marine mammal biology and cognition, comparative brain anatomy, self-awareness in nonhuman animals, human-nonhuman animal relationships, and the evolution of intelligence. She is also an expert on marine mammal captivity issues such as dolphin assisted therapy and the educational claims of the zoo and aquarium industry. In 2001, she co-authored a ground-breaking study offering the first conclusive evidence for mirror self-recognition in bottlenose dolphins, after which she decided against further research with captive animals.

Lori is also the Founder and Executive Director of The Kimmela Center for Animal Advocacy, which focuses on bridging the gap between academic research and scholarship and on-the-ground animal advocacy efforts. She has appeared in several films and television programs, including the 2013 documentary Blackfish about killer whale captivity, Unlocking the Cage, the 2016 documentary on the Nonhuman Rights Project, and Long Gone Wild, the 2019 documentary that picks up where Blackfish left off and the work of the Whale Sanctuary Project begins.

Nikita talks with Dr Andrew Kelly, Director of Freedom for Animals, one of UK’s longest-running animal charities with a mission to protect animals from exploitation, harm and captivity.

Dr Andrew Kelly, a passionate advocate for animals, graduated from University of Glasgow in 1997 with a first class BSc (Hons) in Zoology and from Leeds University in 2001 with a PhD in Evolutionary Ecology. This was followed by post-doctoral research on Seabird Ecology.

In 2004, Andrew joined the Royal Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) as Manager of Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre in Cheshire where he introduced a programme to measure post-release survival of rehabilitated wildlife casualties. Following a brief return to academia in 2010 at Queen’s University in Belfast, Andrew returned to the RSPCA as Head of Wildlife Department for two years during which time he headed a small team of wildlife specialists to deliver RSPCA policies on captive wild animals, the keeping of exotic animals as pets, and the welfare implications of wildlife management.

In 2013, Andrew joined Humane Society International as Consultant Policy Advisor working on a range of issues including working collaboratively at EU level to ensure the protection of wild animals identified as non-native species and to influence animal welfare provisions included in EU-wide legislation.

In 2014, Andrew joined the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA) as Chief Executive Officer. During his seven years with the ISPCA, Andrew worked with other like-minded organisations to successfully campaign for a ban on the use of wild animals in circuses, a ban on fur farming and a commitment by the Irish government to introduce legislation on the trade in wild animals as pets.

Dr Kelly joined Freedom for Animals as its new Director in December 2021.

In his spare time, Andrew is a keen birdwatcher and loves long walks in the countryside.

Staci-lee wrote this poem in 1999 after going out to the park to see the wolves. She spent a week out there observing the Druid pack, which no longer exists, and the Rose Creek pack. Nikita Dhawan, Founder of Youth for Animals, chats with Tony Verhulst and Sofie Goetghebeur, co-founders of Elephant Haven sanctuary in Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region of south-west of France. The sanctuary currently houses two Asian female elephants Gandhi and Delhi in its 70 acre area.

Tony Verhulst, Founder, worked at Antwerp Zoo / Planckendael between 1993 and 2015, where he cared for the elephants from 2001 on a full time basis. From his childhood, Tony became passionate about the life of all animals, in particular the animals that depend on people. Tony has gained international experience with elephants and from this passion and knowledge the idea of Elephant Haven was born. He is responsible for the care of the elephants, the development of the habitats and making the care plans for the elephants.

Sofie Goetghebeur, Founder/Treasurer, worked at the Antwerp Zoo from 1993 till 2015.She has experience in the care of birds, small monkeys, okapi, marine mammals, gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees coming from an animal centre, and elephants. Sofie has a heart for animals and is very passionate and motivated about this project. She has a sensitive nature and a respect for both humans and animals. She is partly responsible for the care of the elephants, the development of the habitats and making the care plans. Sofie is also active in the communication department.

Alana Reynolds is a current joint-degree student at Stanford Law and Stanford School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences dedicated to the pursuit of environmental law, research and reform, with academic and professional experience in ecological research and environmental litigation. Alana earned her B.A. in Ecological & Evolutionary Biology and and a certificate in Environmental Studies from Princeton University. In 2017 Alana traveled to Mozambique with support from the Becky Colvin Memorial Award to conduct fieldwork on the effectiveness of various types of fences that subsistence farmers on the border of Gorongosa National Park could use to protect their crops from elephants.

Todd Montgomery is the Sr. Manager of External Relations for The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. In this role, he oversees The Sanctuary’s onsite and offsite volunteer program, internships, community partnerships, and general outreach. Todd has been with The Sanctuary since 2013.

Todd is also part of the education team that designs and delivers The Sanctuary’s education programs at The Elephant Discovery Center and online through virtual field trips, reaching more than 16,000 people annually.

Courtney Scott is the Elephant Consultant for In Defense of Animals (IDA). Located in Portland, Oregon, she has spent the last 15 years working to advance the cause of captive elephants. In 2008, after witnessing the Oregon Zoo's senior elephant Packy pacing in his pathetically small cage, she was motivated to launch the non profit Free the Oregon Zoo Elephants (FOZE). Seeing Packy's suffering also inspired her to produce a film exposing the plight of captive animals. IDA has been a staunch ally for FOZE, and collaborated on many protests and outreach events. IDA with FOZE successfully lobbied to get the zoo to stop its use of bull hooks and IDA's efforts led to the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) ban on bull hooks for all its member zoos. As of 2021, Courtney has been busy working for IDA on the Ten Worst Zoos for Elephants campaign, and is also engaged in developing more ways for IDA to support the cause of captive and wild elephants in Asia and Africa.

Diana Valencia is the founder of the non-profit NGO Abriendo Jaulas Abriendo Mentes (Opening Cages Opening Minds). This organization fights for the rights of animals who are captive in Mexico City's zoos. Diana also initiated the campaign for the liberation of the elephant Ely so that she can be relocated to a sanctuary. The law firm Va por sus Derechos (This Goes for Their Rights) has joined her in this fight. This group of lawyers work for the rights of animals in Mexico to be recognized and for animals to acquire legal personhood as non-human persons".

Lila Nieto is passionate about activism in favor of animal rights and the climate emergency. She learned about the campaign for the liberation of Ely on Instagram and from there she got in touch with Diana & joined the cause.

In the past two decades, Nalini Ramachandran has worked as a writer and an editor across various media—film and television, newspapers and magazines, children's books and graphic novels. Her works often explore the intersections between culture, nature, wildlife, and human existence.

She is the author of multiple books, including Trumpet Calls: Epic Tales of Extraordinary Elephants; Gods, Giants and the Geography of India; Nava Durga: The Nine Forms of the Goddess; Lore of the Land: Storytelling Traditions of India; and APJ Abdul Kalam: One Man, Many Missions.

Nikita Dhawan from Youth for Animals talks with Anthony E. Lovell, an Endangered-Wildlife poet and founder of "The One Million Poetry”.

Anthony is an Endangered-Wildlife Poet - since early 2021 - when he was persuaded to follow his passion, realising it was a return to his 10 year old self and his lifelong love of animals and nature. Finding these loved ones under existential threat on a global scale, he became a proxy voice for the endangered, using emotive poetry to draw attention - and found an audience. He founded The One Million Poetry Project in collaboration with Ingrid Lung of The Earth Agency in response to the 2019 IPBES report that identified up to 1,000,000 species were at risk of extinction from human activity. The project seeks to collaborate with other artists, conservation organisations and corporations in support of sharing the earth with all species, recognition of other species (Great Apes, Cetaceans, and Elephants to start with), and the promotion of a ‘Sanctuary Earth’ world view.
