Radio WORM Goes To... is a series of freewheeling shows where regular WORM radiomakers report from the field: music festivals, arts events, and other remarkable things.
In the third and final edition of ‘Petting a Cow’s Nose In A Pumpkin Patch’, my journey for Radio WORM to Meakusma, I interview the trio Robyn Schulkowsky and Andi and Hannes Teichmann, who perform together as the Gebrüder Teichmann.
Robyn Schulkowksy is a legend of the avant-garde. Born in 1953, and committed to percussion, she quickly discovered that the classical interpretation of an orchestra bored her. Her complete joy, direction, and love for sound has guided her across the world, collaborating and performing with musicians across more genres and iterations of sound than you or I can fathom.
Brothers Andi and Hannes Teichmann have long performed as a duo – the Gebrüder Teichmann. They are committed to cultural activism; in researching and experimenting with the boundaries of sound and have been firmly entrenched in the electronic milieu of Berlin since the 90s.
We sit on the street-side terrace of a restaurant in Eupen, surrounded by the sounds of the city – cars, churchbells, chatter, and end up talking for nearly four hours. Our talk meanders, taking a walk through their respective childhoods to see how events in their life has shaped their journey with music. Ultimately, we ponder what music means to them – what it means to research, deconstruct different components of music, to improvise, to lose oneself in sound. We explore the nothingness and everything-ness of relenting oneself to something larger than us all: mother music.

Cara writes: In this episode, I share excerpts from my interview with Dalia Neis and Enir Da of Dali Muru and the Polyphonic Swarm, as well as excerpts from my brief chat with the visual designer and long-term Stroom affiliate, Nana Esi.
Dalia, Enir and I sit, sunblinded, in a communal garden and discuss their universe of references – Sergei Parajanov’s Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors from 1965, Dario Argento’s soundtracks –, the power of rivers to transgress borders and time, their upcoming book and soundtrack ‘The Swarm’ – a multimedia continuation of the universe they have created with their debut album – and how the experience of an album is shows that music is a journey: a durational piece the listener sits through and experiences in real-time. We also discuss finding their home on stroom, alter egos in music, and their attempt to transgress the heteronormativity of love-songs by dedicating one to a boar.
Nana Esi has been a key part of Stroom’s universe since the very beginning. With her, I discuss the what stroom was like in the early days, the history of online radio, the playful, ambigious, near-fictive identity of stroom, and what it was like to “wake up with the radio, and go to bed with the radio” every day. Johana, Sebastiaan and Jacco were in Breda to record the guts and gorey glory of BUT Film Fest: the festival dedicated to B-Movies, Underground and Trash-films, 31 August to 4 September. Over the years BUT has invited reputed filmmakers from over the world, such as John Waters, Enzo G. Castellari and Bruce LaBruce. This edition of BUT was no different, and as part of this year's Vigilante and Female Revenge theme BUT invited actress and director Pollyanna McIntosh, known for her role in The Walking Dead-series and star in various revenge films such as The Woman (2011) and Revenge Ride (2020). Our trio also met up with star guest Robert Bronzi, lookalike celebrity-double of Death Wish-star Charles Bronson! With a shared focus on language as a performative document through the feminine voice, they aimed to avoid a journalistic approach when documenting the event and instead to experiment with language-based methodologies that implement ephemerality and the self (the ‘auto’). The resulting series was performed live in the Radio WORM studio. Tisa N. Herlec and Ceola Tunstall-Behrens talk to Foivos Dousos and Alex Dimitriou, creators of ORFEA2021, presented in Rotterdam at this year's O. Festival: https://o-festival.nl/en/voorstelling/o-cinema-orfea2021 (https://o-festival.nl/en/voorstelling/o-cinema-orfea2021) The work ORFEAS2021, based on Claudio Monteverdi’s opera L’Orfeo, is the first queer opera in Greek that tells the story of the fight of Orfeas, the first gay prime minister of Greece, against the long-established state of oppression of “Live your Myth in Greece”. It is a postmodern experimental work with elements of baroque melodrama, DIY collage, post-internet aesthetic and virtual reality. The libretto was penned by Andriana Minou and Foivos Dousos. Phil Ieropoulos directed and edited the video. The opera is inspired by and dedicated to the memory of performer and activist Zak Kostopoulos/Zackie Oh.
