Kathak and contemporary dance are intertwined in the work of choreographer and dancer Aakash Odedra. Born in Birmingham and trained in the UK and India, Odedra has become an internationally-recognised and award-winning artist. In this podcast he speaks of the teachers who 'gave him an ocean', including Chitraleka Bolar and Nilima Devi; and Bollywood choreographer Shiamak Davar; and of other major influences – Anand Bhatt, Akram Khan, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Russell Maliphant. His thoughts range through life and death, nature, the language of dance; and he reflects on his recent works Samsara (withHu Shenyuan) and #JeSuis.

Sooraj Subramaniam is a dance artist whose work ranges across bharatanatyam, odissi, ballet and kathak. Of Malaysian-Indian origin he now lives in Belgium, from where he spoke to UK-based Pranav Yajnik. Their conversation ranges from his early classes with 'Mrs Ayyappan' at the local temple in Kuala Lumpur ('it was fun'), his training with Ramli Ibrahim at Sutra, to what keeps him dancing.

Shobana Jeyasingh CBE is an internationally-recognised choreographer who founded Shobana Jeyasingh Dance 30 years ago. She was born in Chennai, India in 1957 and has lived in Sri Lanka and Malaysia. She trained in bharatanatyam (the classical dance of Tamil Nadu), under Samaraj Pillai and read English Literature, specialising in Shakespeare at The University of Sussex. She founded Shobana Jeyasingh Dance in 1989 and has created over 60 critically-acclaimed works for diverse platforms including stage, screen and unconventional public spaces. Her work is noted for both its intellectual rigour and its visceral physicality.
