Welcome to Simple(ish) Fitness!

We are talking about your health and fitness here. There is a very relatable struggle we all deal with which is trying to figure out if you have to push through when you don’t want to, or how much it will hurt your efforts if you simply go with the flow.

And the answer is, well I will let you listen to the show to find the answer, but I’ll tell you that it’s something we all have to think through and evaluate for ourselves.

And I think today’s show will help us all learn how to do that better!

Welcome to Simple(ish) Fitness!

Okay, so you’ve gone through some time of building value in health and fitness, you’ve started doing some things at home, and you’re ready to invest more and take your fitness to the next level… what do you do next?

Have you considered online personal training? It is a great way to integrate a personal trainer or coach into your current lifestyle and help you achieve your goals.

Online training is what we will be talking about today. Why is it different from in-person training, what are some benefits to it and reasons you should give it a try.

How do you know you’ve found a good fit, what should you ask your trainer, and how can you approach some questions such as, biting off the right amount, or adjusting a plan that you aren’t a fan of.

To join us for this discussion and share some of his wisdom is Dustin Lash. Dustin is a very experienced fitness professional who works with many clients through online personal training.

He has seen and done it all! And will guide us through some important understandings and perspectives of online training so that you can find success!

Welcome to Simple(ish) Fitness!

I’m sure you have seen the term biohack on your social media, or said among your friends, or maybe pop up in your newsfeed, but what does it make you think of?

Do you think of someone trying weird things that you aren’t sure about? Or maybe you get an itch to try it for yourself to see if it actually works?

And maybe it’s a combination of feelings depending on what you’re seeing. After all, the list of actions labeled as biohacks is long. Drinking your vegetables, to red light therapy, to cold plunges, to darkness retreats – and some of them might make more sense to you than others.

But have you considered ways that you can hack into your biology (that’s what a biohack is right?), through things that are unquestioned ways to make yourself feel better and that have been around forever?

**Today we are going to chat about biohacks to gain some perspective on what we are seeing around us, and then we will review what we think are the biggest and most important ways that you can tap into making your mind and body feel better – and you won’t need to worry about if they are safe or if they will actually help. They unquestionably do!

Welcome to Simple(ish) Fitness!

When you are looking to build a healthy lifestyle you can’t avoid all of the information you find online and from others saying “this is all you gotta do…” or “if you just do it this way it’s easy…”.

But the truth is that fitness and making changes to your lifestyle is a pretty challenging task, regardless of what those people say. Even this show tells you many ways to simplify fitness!

But we believe there is a difference between making something simple and making something easy.

Joining us for this conversation is personal trainer extraordinaire, and friend of the show, Kevin Driscoll. He is going to help us understand this concept of tackling fitness and understanding what is truly hard about it, and what we can do to make the process a little easier, even if the overall task is still a challenging one!

Welcome to Simple(ish) Fitness!

How many diets could you name if I asked you to? Keto, Whole-30, Vegan, Paleo, low-carb, Atkins…? We could keep going.

There are so many of them – why is that? Are they all bad? Are some good and some bad? What is your reaction when someone brings their diet up?

In today’s episode we are going to talk about diets and answer some of these questions: why diets are out there, do they work, and how should we perceive them when they come up.

The truth is that they really aren’t all bad, but it is important that we know what to think about diets and what a healthy, sustainable approach to dieting is.

Welcome to Simple(ish) Fitness!

So much of today’s “nutrition” conversation is based around what you should NOT eat. For most of us, all or nothing isn't helpful long term. We just end up cycling back to the same choices we were making before.

In this episode we break down what you CAN eat an how you can fit it into your lifestyle while still working toward your goals!

Welcome to Simple(ish) Fitness!

You have probably heard a friend or a fitness coach throw around terms like macros or micros, and if you are like me, didn’t really know what that meant or what you could do about it.

It turns out having knowledge and control of your nutrition requires some understanding of these things so you can ensure a balanced and healthy diet and give your body all of the nutrients you need.

So that is our topic for today: understanding the nutrition within the food we eat and how we can use that knowledge to build more effective eating habits for our bodies.

Welcome to Simple(ish) Fitness!

We have talked about motivation many times throughout the Simple(ish) Fitness episodes, and mentioned the value of implementing external motivators. An excellent way to do this is signing up for an event and putting a date on the calendar!

This is a great way to commit to something and manufacture some motivation for exercising when you know that you have an active event on the calendar you are working towards. Today’s conversation will chat about why and how this is so helpful in helping us meet our goals.

We have the discussion in the context of a 5K because they're easy for almost anyone to find, sign up for, and participate in - though the lessons we learn in this episode can be applied to any sort of fitness event that you think is a good fit for you!

I realize that what you wear during exercise doesn’t seem like the most complex of fitness conversations, it doesn’t carry a lot of importance or impact in meeting your goals… but actually, maybe it does.

The experience you create through things that are in your control makes a huge impact on your success. And what you wear is certainly one of those things that is in your control!

Welcome to Simple(ish) Fitness!

Today we are talking with a special guest, Tom Mounsey. Brandon has been training Tom for about a year and we asked him to come share about his fitness journey with us.

Consistency is the hero of this story, as in most fitness success stories. We dive into how Tom has seen the effects of being consistent in fitness, how he started out when ‘consistency’ hadn’t taken hold yet, and what tools we can use to be more consistent in our own fitness journeys.

If you want to follow Tom on Instagram and say hi you can find him here: @mounseyt

Let's be honest, we’ve all done it, punched our height and weight into a BMI (Body Mass Index) calculator to see where we are on the scale.

But how important is the number we are given on the BMI chart? Why is it even a thing… and when should we pay attention to it? Today we have this conversation and answer all the burning BMI questions you’re asking yourself too.

Welcome to Simple(ish) Fitness!

Through the past many months we have been working hard to bring fitness to you without overcomplicating it and helping you to understand what makes us healthy.

We have uncovered the biggest themes that we will use moving forward and that define the mindset we need to adopt as we get further along our fitness journeys. Our foundation if you will.  Today we will talk about the biggest lessons we have learned so far.

Our mission up to this point has been to simplify what it means and takes to have a healthy lifestyle… and that’s still our mission as we move forward.

Welcome to Simple(ish) Fitness!

What does stretching actually do for you? What is your knowledge of stretching and how to best use it in your life?

Growing up I always thought you stretched to avoid injury. That’s when I did it, when I was engaging in an activity that I believed to have a higher risk of injury. I was not educated on the full benefits of stretching or even how to actually reduce the risk of injury.

So in this episode we are going to talk about stretching. How it benefits you and if it really does (or doesn’t) reduce the risk of injury. Now, we aren’t going to tell you what stretches to do here or when to do them - we will save that for another conversation. But we are going to teach you what stretching actually does!

Welcome to Simple(ish) Fitness!

We got to thinking… you know what doesn’t get brought up as much as it should? How to teach your children to value fitness and how to help them build healthy habits that will stick with them through life.

To join us in this conversation is personal trainer, Chris Proctor. The idea for this topic was inspired by a post he made sharing how he works to teach his own children to value their fitness. So we asked him to join us for the conversation on this week’s episode.

You can find Chris on Instagram at @chrisproctorcpt or on how website at https://chrisproctorwellness.com/

Welcome to Simple(ish) Fitness!

Today we have a special guest we think you all will really enjoy. Kevin Driscoll is joining us from San Diego, California. He is a super fun person and it was our honor to chat with him for this topic today of reward systems in fitness.

Reward systems are a tool we should all be using to get on track and stay on track with developing healthy habits and meeting our own goals. We will talk for a little while about why we need to use rewards, give some good ideas and examples of reward systems, and help you set up a system that works for you.

And afterwards we will share what kind of animals we would like to be if we had to switch lives with a member of the animal kingdom.

You can find Kevin on Instagram at: @kpd.fit

Welcome to Simple(ish) Fitness!

Brandon and I started this podcast to help listeners connect to fitness a little differently.

We wanted to make fitness more relatable, break down some barriers that make fitness intimidating, and overall focus on the small things – like what about each topic really matters, or what changes can we make to our lives in small ways that will yield results.

But we also started it because we want to have fun with it and connect with you!

We are several months in and we’re ready to introduce a couple new things – or segments you may call them.

Today we are going to give them a practice run before we start implementing them into episodes regularly. We hope you enjoy them and be sure to let us know what you think!

We have been able to separate this into two categories: How much can your body handle and how much can your life sustain. Listen along as we explore this question and give some tips to help!

Welcome to Simple(ish) Fitness!

When we think of a fitness journal often our minds go to a log-book style paper that we mark each time we finish a workout or eat a meal.

While fitness journaling can look like that, it’s not the only way it can look. We found that it has a lot more overlap with life journaling than we typically think. Today we explore the benefits of journaling, how that can look differently for different people, and how it can fit with different lifestyles and preferences.

Welcome to Simple(ish) Fitness!

To gain perspective means learning how to change the meaning of a circumstance. Gaining a larger and more well rounded perspective in fitness leads to a slightly new meaning of fitness - which, in turn, may change how we feel about it and respond to it too.

For today’s conversation, Allyson Spungin joins us and brings her extreme knowledge and unique perspective of the fitness world to the show. She will share parts of her own journey as a trainer, how she simplifies fitness to her clients, some tips on nutrition, and how her perspective of fitness has been so impactful!
