Dr. Luke Petach is an Assistant Professor of Economics in the Jack C. Massey College of Business at Belmont University. Originally from the Pacific Northwest, Luke completed a Bachelor’s degree in economics and philosophy at George Fox University before receiving his M.A. and Ph.D. in economics from Colorado State University. Luke’s research focuses on the causes and consequences of economic inequality and the interaction between inequality and long-run economic growth.

They discuss the immense medical advances and major historical events of the last century that have profoundly affected people’s attitude toward death. Does Christian belief in life after death alleviate the fear of it? In a culture that keeps death at a distance, what practices can help us to number our days?
Lydia Dugdale, MD, MAR (ethics), is the Dorothy L. and Daniel H. Silberberg Associate Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and Director of the Center for Clinical Medical Ethics. She also serves as Associate Director of Clinical Ethics at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Irving Medical Center. A practicing internist, Dugdale moved to Columbia in 2019 from Yale University, where she previously served as Associate Director of the Program for Biomedical Ethics. Her scholarship focuses on end-of-life issues, medical ethics, and the doctor-patient relationship. She edited Dying in the Twenty-First Century(MIT Press, 2015) and is author of The Lost Art of Dying (HarperOne, 2020), a popular press book on the preparation for death.
Our host, Joseph Clair, serves as the executive dean of the Cultural Enterprise at George Fox University, which encompasses the humanities, theology, education, and professional studies. He is also an associate professor of theology and culture. Before joining the George Fox faculty in 2013, he earned his PhD in the religion, ethics and politics program at Princeton University while also working as an assistant in instruction. In this episode, Abigail Favale talks with author, teacher, and philosopher Peter Boghossian about the culture wars. In a time of cancelling and defunding, critical theories and political extremism, tolerance and moral orthodoxy, how do we navigate the turbulent social and political scene we find ourselves in? Does the standard of reality depend upon individual experience or on hard data? What role are academic institutions playing in the rapidly occurring cultural shift?
Dr. Peter Boghossian's main focus is bringing the tools of professional philosophers to people in a wide variety of contexts. Peter has a teaching pedigree spanning more than 25 years and 30 thousand students - in prisons, hospitals, public and private schools, seminaries, universities, Fortune 100 companies, and small businesses. His fundamental objective is to teach people how to think through what often seem to be intractable problems. Peter's primary research areas are critical thinking and moral reasoning. His doctoral research studies, funded by the State of Oregon and supported by the Oregon Department of Corrections, consisted of using the Socratic method to help prison inmates to increase their critical thinking and moral reasoning abilities and to increase their desistance to criminal behavior. Peter’s writing has appeared in a large selection of publications, including The New York Times, Time Magazine, and The Wall Street Journal, among many others.

In this episode, Daniel Kang talks with Dr. Rebecca Yazzie about pursuing restorative justice and holistic wellness in the area of social work. What does it mean to seek wellness for those who are in the process of social rehabilitation? How does the Gospel’s focus on restoration influence the way we think about social work? How can we maintain hope while continually engaging in restorative work?
Dr. Rebecca Yazzie is a licensed Clinical Social Worker and holds a PhD in social work and social research from Portland State University. She serves at George Fox University as an associate professor and as director of the Master of Social Work program. In previous years, she worked as a principle executive manager with the Oregon Youth Authority as the treatment services supervisor at the MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility in Woodburn, Oregon. She has practice experience in various settings, including correctional facilities, jails, schools, hospitals, and community-based emergency response agencies.
The host for this episode, Dr. Daniel Kang, joined George Fox’s Department of Physical Therapy as an assistant professor of physical therapy in 2013. Previously, he worked for nine years as owner and lead physical therapist of Kang Physical Therapy Inc. of Ventura, California. His teaching experience includes stints as an instructor of kinesiology at California State University of Channel Islands and as a teaching assistant of anatomy and physiology at Loma Linda University. In this episode, Spanish professor David Martínez welcomes travel writer Rolf Potts into the studio to recount stories of risky adventures, unlikely friendships, and intercultural hospitality. The two give tips for new travelers and share their advice on how to be a good guests in a foreign place.
Rolf Potts is a travel writer, essayist, author of several books including Vagabonding: An Uncommon Guide to the Art of Long-Term World Travel and Marco Polo Didn’t Go There: Stories and Revelations From One Decade as a Postmodern Travel Writer. He leads intensive courses at Paris Writing Workshops and hosts a podcast called Deviate with Rolf Potts.
David Martínez teaches Spanish and directs George Fox University’s Center for Study Abroad. He completed his PhD at the University of Georgia, where he focused his studies and wrote his dissertation on the representation of the Spanish transition to democracy (1969-1981). He is particularly interested in contemporary Spanish authors (Ignacio Martínez de Pisón, Rafael Reig, Marta Sanz, etc.) whose works aim at a demythification of the hegemonic narrative of the transition. He has presented his research at various conferences and venues across the United States.

In this episode, Abigail Favale broaches the topic of postmodernism with Isaac Choi and Joel Mayward. How does it speak into theology, culture, and the arts? Can postmodernism coexist with modernism? Should everything that suggests a postmodern framework be rejected or feared?
Dr. Isaac Choi studied physics and chemistry at Harvard College. He received two master’s degrees from Princeton Theological Seminary in philosophy and theology, writing a thesis on divine action, quantum mechanics, and computer simulations. His doctoral dissertation in philosophy at the University of Notre Dame was on the nature and epistemology of expertise, centered on the question of how we should decide between disagreeing experts.
Dr. Joel Mayward earned a PhD in divinity at the University of St Andrews in Scotland, where he studied theology, philosophy, and film.
He’s currently the theology editor for The Other Journal, an interdisciplinary journal produced by the Seattle School of Theology & Psychology, and is a professional freelance film critic as a member of the Online Film Critics Society and a “Tomatometer-approved critic” for Rotten Tomatoes. He also runs a film criticism website, cinemayward.com.

In this episode, Daniel Kang talks with Dr. Erika Barber about the inescapable and widely varied experience of growing older. What are some helpful markers of holistic health in the latter part of life? How does the Bible speak about the human lifespan and the suffering that goes with it? What is the significance of dwelling with others in pain?
Dr. Erika Barber joined the physician assistant program as an assistant professor in 2021. In the eight years previous she worked as a float physician for the Providence Medical Group in Portland, providing in-person visits at family practice and internal medicine clinics, telemedicine visits for its Virtual Sick Clinic, and home and nursing home visits with Providence’s Elder At Home program.
Previously, Dr. Barber was medical director and primary care provider with Immanuel Pathways in Omaha, Nebraska, where she helped start a program for all-inclusive care of the elderly. She earned an MD from Creighton University and the University of Nebraska Medical Center (2007) and holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas (2003). She holds board certification in internal medicine and geriatrics.

Nishant holds a Masters degree in Computer Science from Arizona State University.

Angel Adams Parham is Associate Professor of Sociology and senior fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia. She works in the area of historical sociology, engaging in research and writing that examine the past in order to better understand how to live well in the present and envision wisely for the future. Her research and teaching are inspired by classical philosophies of living and learning that emphasize the pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty. She shares this love of classical learning with her daughters and through Nyansa Classical Community, an educational non-profit which seeks to cultivate knowledge and wisdom to transform a generation.

In this episode, Abigail Favale shares a conversation with philosophy professor Isaac Choi spanning from the existence of aliens to artificial intelligence takeover. Does Christian Theology actually lend itself to the possibility of extra-terrestrial life? How does ancient philosophy address ideas that we might consider to be “science fiction?” What are the most prominent contemporary theories about the multiverse?
Dr. Isaac Choi studied physics and chemistry at Harvard College. He received two masters from Princeton Theological Seminary in philosophy and theology, writing a thesis on divine action, quantum mechanics, and computer simulations. His doctoral dissertation in philosophy at the University of Notre Dame was on the nature and epistemology of expertise, centered on the question of how we should decide between disagreeing experts.
Professor Abigail Favale completed her doctorate at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, where she was a recipient of the competitive Overseas Research Award. In 2011, her dissertation was granted the Samuel Rutherford Prize for the most distinguished thesis in English literature.

Dr. Amber Nelson joined George Fox as an assistant professor of clinical psychology in 2019. An alumna of George Fox, from which she earned a doctorate in clinical psychology (2016) and both master’s (2014) and bachelor’s (2009) degrees in psychology, she worked the previous three years as a pediatric psychologist at the Kennedy Krieger Institute & Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, where she completed two years of postdoctoral fellowship and joined as a licensed staff psychologist in August of 2018.
Dr. Danny Rodriguez is an assistant professor of clinical psychology in the Doctor of Psychology program at George Fox University.
An alumnus of George Fox, from which he earned both a doctorate in psychology (2019) and a bachelor’s degree in the discipline (2013), he worked the previous year as a behavioral health provider for the Providence Medical Group in Sherwood, serving as a licensed psychologist for patients confronting depression, anxiety, mood disorders, and other issues. In the year prior, he was a postdoctoral fellow (2019-20) and psychology intern (2018-19) with I Ola Lãhui Rural Hawaii Behavioral Health in Hawaii.

She is the editor of the anthology Christ’s Body, Christ’s Wounds: Staying Catholic When You’ve Been Hurt in the Church. She has written on the paths of love available to gay Christians for a wide range of publications, including America, the American Conservative, Commonweal, and Christianity Today, and online at the Atlantic, the New York Times, and the Washington Post; she speaks frequently on these subjects, at venues ranging from the Gay Christian Network conference to seminaries, parishes, Theology on Tap, and universities.

Ryan Jacobson is an assistant professor of physical therapy at George Fox University. He has formerly worked as a pediatric rehab supervisor with Providence Children's Development Institute in Portland, an inpatient physical therapist at Providence St. Vincent Hospital in Portland, and as a program supervisor with PRIDE for Kids in Vancouver, Washington.
