Mark McNear, a clinical psychologist, shares his story of overcoming addiction through the love and support of his family and God. He is the author of Finding My Words: A Ruthless Commitment to Healing Gently After Trauma. In his book, he discusses how addiction is not the problem but how trauma is, and we need to learn to overcome that to fight our demons truly. What is Addiction? Dr. McNear explains that addiction is a symptom of the real problem, not the problem itself. We cannot cure people of addiction if we do not delve into the root cause, which often is behind trauma. It's the trauma we need to help people to heal from, and it takes significant commitment and tools. How to Help Self-SootheDr. McNear encourages us to have a toolbelt of ways to help heal ourselves. He gives such examples as mindful coloring, tapping, and other grounding exercises to help us self-soothe when we feel dysregulated. Often, because our parents did not know how to regulate themselves, we do not have the necessary tools to help ourselves regulate. Turning to GodFinally, he discusses how his relationship with God has grown due to his healing. He shares how he could see God's hand in it the whole time.If you would like to order the book, you can get it here and it will support both Viamare Healing as well as Dr. Mark McNear. -------If you liked this episode, please rate, share, and comment on this episode. Being a long time suffered of major depressive disorder, Angela has experienced a lot of resistance from the Christian community. Depression inside the church is often very misunderstood and those who suffer often end up having to reach outside the church in order to get help. Because Christians often do not feel feelGod’s presence, they often feel disconnected not just from their church, but also from God. By sharing my story, I hope that I can help others feel more connected to God, have a better understanding of others who suffer from depression, and an openness to learn more.

Too often we discourage people from feeling the feelings that they are feeling. Emotions have a beginning, middle, and end. We often want to skip to our own end as well as encourage those we love to get to the end of their emotions as well. But it is the middle part that allows us to heal. Here are four steps on how to comfort those in your life that you love who are struggling.

Spiritual Bypassing seems to be a new buzz word these days, but what is it, and does the Church do this. Spiritual bypass is anytime we use spirituality to take responsibility and ownership off our own shoulders. Have you ever said, "I will pray for you," in order to feel like you are doing something, then never end up praying? Has anyone ever said "I will pray for you," when what you were really doing is asking for their help. Have you ever needed something so desperately, but all you could get from your fellow Christians is "I will pray for you?" Yeah, all that is spiritual bypass. We need to stop shifting the responsibility and ownership of our own stuff and those we love off of our shoulders in the name of God. We need to step up and help others.
