WHOA! What? Word. by SHE WEARS WORTH: Recent Episodes

Courtney Reimer

A weekly podcast where we talk about all things as it relates to your worth & value & where it comes from. Our hope is to give you glimpses of God’s goodness, challenge worldly views, share personal stories & dig into what the 'Word' has to say about it. We want you to know that your worth has nothing to do with what you do & everything to do with what Christ already did on the cross. We are so excited you’re here! Sit back, have fun, listen, learn & live confidently in who God created you to be!

This week we are blessed by the one and only Karli Quigley! She spoke at our SWW Conference on her experience with anxiety and mental health and how, with Christ on her side, she worked through that season of her life (and continues to work through it). Her vulnerability and rawness as she shared what she experienced was so moving and encouraging for the teens. I pray that her talk helps you in some way also!

We first talked to Karli in Episode 1 of the WHOA! What? Word. Podcast and on our 2nd episode. Listen to it on SPOTIFY HERE or on Apple Podcasts HERE.

On this week's episode, we hear from two incredible women from Riverwood Church Community - Brittany Petku (Youth & Young Adults Pastor) and her mom, Carolyn Petku (Congregational Care Pastor). They discuss relationships and friendships, how we approach them, and how we are called to live ‘set apart’ from those around us.

This amazing mother-daughter duo shares personal stories and things they learned as Brittany navigated relationships and friendships in high school and how her mother responded right there by her side.

Brittany will be speaking at our SHE WEARS WORTH Conference coming up on April 19th+20th, 2024!

Happy Love Day Friends! This week's episode is the talk my dear friend Katherine Healy gave at our SWW Conference last year. Katherine is a certified counselor, lover of good dance parties, and on fire for Christ! I first chatted with Katherine on the podcast in our 1st season, in episode 8. (LISTEN HERE)

Today, we hear Katherine talk about what it looks like to be in a Godly relationship, what Godly Relationships can do for your lives, and how we can feel fully known and loved while in a relationship.

After several months away, WE ARE BACK! Season 3 is going to look a little bit different than our first two because this season is primarily going to consist of prerecorded talks from our first SWW Conference that happened in October of 2022. With our next conference happening on April 19th & 20th in Winnipeg, I wanted to make time and share all the powerful, practical, and encouraging things we learned from our incredible speakers last year!

A lot has happened in the last 7(ish) months - we welcomed our son, Waylon into the world in October and before that, in June, the adoption of our oldest was finalized. In this episode, I give a bit of a life update AND share about the scariest prayer I ever prayed ('Thy Will Be Done...') and how my attitude, outlook, and heart changed after praying it!

We are excited to be back!

In this week’s episode, I get the chance to speak with Andi Long, the Founder & Executive Director of Bloom Foundation. An organization based in Austin, Texas that empowers and encourages young women to grow through what they go through, specifically bullying.

Andi felt called to start the organization after years of experiencing bullying herself. It started in elementary school, continued in middle school, and again in college. After researching and looking for tools that could help her cope with what she was going through and coming up empty-handed, she felt God call her to share her story and create an organization. She took her hurt, pain, and struggles and was determined to help other girls experiencing the same thing!

Today, the Bloom Foundations helps teen girls all over grow through what they are going through, by equipping them with tools to work through the emotions, hurt, confusion, and more, that come with being bullied. Andi not only shares with us parts of her story, but more information on the organization, what the Bloom Foundation offers, and how to get involved.

Foundational Values of Bloom Foundation:

  1. Belief
  2. Perspective
  3. Habits & Creative Outlets
  4. Purpose
  5. Self Worth
  6. Empathy & Grace (Forgiveness)

After a tragedy struck in high school, Samanta found herself searching in all the wrong places for love and acceptance, trying to fill the hole in her heart. It wasn't until Christmas Eve several years ago,  she walked into a church and was met by the welcoming arms of a kind and gentle church member. Because of several women who met her right where she was, she was introduced to the love and character of Jesus.

On today's episode, I have the absolute privilege of sitting down with Samantha Hadaway as she shares her raw, real, emotional testimony. Her story is a reminder that the God we love and serve is in the business of chasing after us and radically changing lives.

We recorded the episode on Good Friday, and there is no better way to rejoice in what Christ did on the cross than by giving Him glory and praise through sharing His goodness.

Ok y'all - I am so excited about this episode because I am joined by my amazing husband, Scott Reimer! We had the honor of speaking to a group of youth adults on May 6th at The Collide Conference in Winnipeg about #RelationshipGoals.

We believe that if you do not know God’s will and design for your life and your romantic life - you will look for the wrong things, fall for the wrong things, and commit to things that will not fulfill you

We walk through the 5 different seasons or stages - singleness, looking for someone, dating, engagement, and marriage - and talk through how God has a perfect design and plan for each! We also share personal stories of things we did right (and wrong) in each season!

I pray this episode encourages you to pursue God and His perfect plan and design for you, no matter what season you are in. And as great as it is to learn from your own mistakes, it is even better to learn from someone else's!

Enjoy Friends!

How do we dream big dreams, chase them and build them all while keeping an open palm and being obedient to whatever (and wherever) God calls us? On this weeks episode, we sit down with Shelley Tyson, and talk about how after years of building and growing her organization called Cultivate, the Lord called her to step away and into a new season.

We talk about navigating dreaming big, knowing God’s voice, listening to His callings, having the faith and courage to step into a new season, what we do in the waiting, and so much more.

Whether you are 14 or 94, this episode is for you because as daughters of the King we each have a sacred calling and individual vocational callings and we need each other’s encouragement to navigate them well.

This week, April 23-29 is National Infertility Awareness Week, and today on our show we sit down and talk with Annabelle Kehler about navigating a season of waiting. Not only is infertility part of Annabelle's story, but she is founder of the organization In The Waiting, part of Life Culture out of Steinbach, Manitoba.

Maybe infertility is not a part of your story or you're not yet at that stage in your life, but there is a good chance that you have been or will be in a SEASON OF WAITING. Waiting can be hard, frustrating, lonely, long, confusing, and complicated but it can also lead to strength, understanding, community, a stronger faith and so much more.

Listen is as Courtney, who also struggled with infertility for over 3 1/2 years, and Annabelle talk through lessons they've learned and struggles they've shared. We pray this episode will be encouraging for you, regardless of the season you are in.

In the last episode, we talked about how God has given us tools & the ability to take our spiraling thoughts captive in order to not let our emotions determine our actions. Today, we will talk about the actions we are commanded to do as followers of Christ.

The Great Commission:

“Then Jesus came to them & said, “All authority in heaven & on earth has been given to me.Therefore go & make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father & of the Son & of the Holy Spirit,& teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you...”

-Matthew 28-18-20

As the Son of God, Jesus has been given all authority in heaven & on earth. Jesus came to be the sacrifice for our sins AND to show us how to live Kingdom Minded. Love looks a lot different from someone living Kingdom Minded. We are to:

  1. Acknowledge the authority of Christ
  2. Go- leave the comforts of our own lives in order to find people that need to know Jesus
  3. Make disciples- disciplining someone is more than just telling them what they are doing wrong - you form a relationship with them built on trust, respect, & love
  4. Of all nations- we should not only create relationships with those that look & act like us
  5. Baptizing them- we should show them how living a life for Jesus looks outwardly
  6. Teaching them- after the relationship is created, after they have come to believe who Jesus is, & after they have outwardly presented their belief…we must teach them how to follow Jesus

We tend to focus on step 6 because we want others to live for Jesus which is a great goal, but we cannot skip the other steps. In order to follow Jesus’ command, we cannot be afraid of how unlike Jesus people look. We cannot be afraid of listening to the perspective of someone different than us. Our goal is not to change the world, it is to introduce Jesus to the world. We can do this through a life of love in action.

4 definitions of love:
sacrificial love, mutual love, equal regard, & delivering love. All come from Jesus’ teaching on being Kingdom Minded & come from the idea that Love has a name, Jesus, & that becoming Love is a life in action. These definitions of love also brought to mind the life that Hannah’s father lived which is why she’s hoping to write all of this into a book one day. One thing that is interesting about these definitions & how her father lived them out is that convicting or condemning are not part of them. A quote she recently heard that hit me pretty hard is:

“If God didn’t send Jesus to condemn the world, I doubt he sent you.” -David Huskins

If we are not to convict or condemn others for their sins, what are we supposed to do? We are supposed to love. We are to live sacrificially; giving not what is left over but giving what is needed. We are to live in mutual love that highlights interpersonal communion with others. We are to hold people in equal regard valuing all people equally. And we are called to live in delivering love which is love by delivering from oppression. Jesus called us to live so drastically differently than the world which has nothing to do with condemning the world. We are to reach across such great divides & hatred in order to care for others.

The same hurt, anxiety, & brokenness we talked about in the last episode can be experienced by those right next to us. Will we be the ones to show such love & kindness that others are freed from the darkness of this world in Jesus’ name?

Even on our best days, we can be filled with doubt, shame, and negative thoughts, and often times these negative, false, distorted thoughts directly affect how we approach and treat those around us.

Today’s episode is part 1 of a 2-part series with my good friend & clinical mental health counselor, Hannah Rule where we dive into the importance of understanding the lies we believe about ourselves, how we choose to let those thoughts control us, and what we can do to reframe those thoughts.

Although the terms we discuss are scientific in design they are all backed by biblical theories and we break them down.

The enemy doesn’t want us to be free from these lies and distorted thoughts because they are the things that KEEP us from going and loving others well. They are the things that silence us, cause us to fear & keep us focused on ourselves.

Make sure to tune in to episode 2 as we break down how we take these actions and use them to help us love others well.

Key Words & Thoughts:Distorted Thoughts
Choice Theory
Reframing Thoughts
Cognitive Triangle

For example, Choice Theory:

We often feel like things have happened to us and there is nothing we can do about it - but that is a lie. We all have distorted thinking - we have a lie that we believe and then we begin acting on that lie. For example. You fail one test, then you start to believe that you are a failure. Then something else happens, let’s say you are asked to help a friend, but you don’t because you believe you're a failure. All of a sudden a small lie that came from an isolated event has now taken over all your thinking and affects all aspects.

Choice Theory with God:

Anxiety has ravished our teens. There are more ways to compare yourself now than ever before. We often feel powerless in these overwhelming emotions. We pray over and over and we feel like our faith is not enough. Child of God, your faith is the “divine power to destroy strongholds.” God has given us counselors, doctors, pastors, and ministers that study and learn how to calm this anxiety that feels uncontrollable. Choice Theory is one of those tools God has given us. Choice Theory helps us look at our thoughts and emotions and the actions that come from those thoughts and emotions, and reminds us that we may not be able to control what others do, but we can control how we react. We can disrupt those thoughts and interrogate them. We can decide to not believe every thought that comes to mind. Our feelings and emotions dictate our decisions, our lives, and what we believe about ourselves if we do not take them captive.

Reframing Thoughts Biblical Backing:

2 Corinthians 10:5 “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”

Renew Our Minds in Order to Love Others: When our anxious thoughts seemed to have taken over, God reminds us that in order to dig out His will for our lives, we must renew our minds. We must investigate our thoughts and what our emotions are telling us. We must then look to His Word, to Jesus, to discern what is good and acceptable. We understand these ideas better once we accept that Jesus is God’s Son and gave His life as a sacrifice for the debt of our sins. When we accept this as truth, God no longer sees me and my sin. God sees Jesus’ sacrifice instead and grants me LIFE.

Bible Verses for Daily Reminders:Zachariah 4:10
Matthew 6:11
Romans 12:2
2 Corinthians 10:5
Lamentations 3:22-23

How do we handle the unexpected? We all have ideas, dreams & plans for what our lives will look like & 99.9% of the time, they do NOT go that way...so what do we do? How do we react? How does it effect us? Are we able to see it as a gift?

In this season 1 wrap-up episode, founder & host Courtney shares how this Christmas season, she finds herself looking to Mary. How this young girl, newly engaged with her whole life ahead of her, received the most unexpected news in all of history...

The Christmas Story : Luke 1:26 - 2:21
What was 'expected news' to Mary became the most beautiful expected gift to the world. Courtney shares some of the unexpected turns in her life & how she's navigating them. She prays for those with a heavy heart, dealing with life's twists & turns, to know, feel & experience not only the love of Christ but the grace, faith & beauty that Mary had when she received her news of baby Jesus.

LISTENERS: THANK YOU so much for your support, love, encouragement, and prayers this first season! We look forward to Season 2, coming spring of 2023.

SHE WEARS WORTH desires for everyone to know their worth & value in Christ so they can live confidently & freely in who God created them to be.

Last week, we dug into why your worth has nothing to do with what you DO & this week, in part 2, Taylor joins us again to talk about how your worth has nothing to do with what you DID.

So often we believe, our sins, shame, mistakes, and imperfections are TOO much for God, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Roman’s 8:38-39 says, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

That means NOTHING (literally nada) can separate you from God’s love.

Taylor & I talk about our experiences with trying to understand this fundamental truth & things that we’ve learned & how your life will radically change when you start TURLY living loved.

We live in a transactional society. It's give and take. If we want this, we have to give that. From a young age, we learn things like nothing is for free or you get what you deserve. BUT when it comes to Christ, none of this applies - your worth has NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT YOU DO.

It's a phrase that we use often at SHE WEARS WORTH and on this week's episode, I speak with Tayor Reimer about how she is learning to believe and live out that simple, yet complex statement.

As women, we are always trying to reach a certain standard or goal. In each season and stage of our life. We often find ourselves striving for the next thing, but if we can get to a place where we can rest in the comfort of knowing that we are loved, worthy, and valued no matter what, we will break free of those unattainable expectations and live joyfully in who Christ's called us to be.

If we can truly, fully, and completely understand that our worth has nothing to do with what we do and live our lives with that knowledge in our hearts we will be drastically different people and we hope this week's episode helps you take a step in the right direction.

Bible Verses Referenced:
Acts 16:6 : Paul Not Being Able to go to Asia:
And they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the work in Asia.

John 15:5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for a part of me, you can do nothing.

2 Corinthians 12:10For when I am weak, then I am strong. That's why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ.

In a world constantly influencing our every idea, belief & action, it can be difficult to clearly understand WHO you were created to be. We often turn to outward for inspiration, then find ourselves influenced & altered.

In this week's episode, I speak with singer, and songwriter, Carine Bado about what it means to live AUTHENTICALLY as Christ created you to be. Originally from the Ivory Coast, not looking or sounding like others around her, Carine has spent lots of time asking, searching & understanding WHO her authentic, Christ-created self is AND she has so much wisdom to share!

I hope you are as blessed by this conversation as much as I was! It was the truth, encouragement, and reminder that I needed!!

I pray that we all have people in our lives that are encouraging us with truth & reminding us of our worth & value BUT it’s also easy for us to put our worth in those people - people like our kids, our family members, our best friends, our husbands…

It’s the ones closest to us that we find ourselves relying on for affirmations & value. We have to remember that ultimately our worth comes from Christ and Christ alone.

On this week’s episode, I have the absolute privilege of chatting with my sister, Carlie Plett about her journey of understanding where her TRUE worth comes from. As much as she loves her husband (and he is one amazing man) she had to learn that her “worth had nothing to do with her husband”!

Around the time I launched SWW, she found herself stumped by the question. “Where does your worth come from”? She found that although she had been raised in the church & had heard how Jesus loved her from a young age, she realized in her late 20’s that she never really, fully understood what that meant.

Listen in as Carlie walks us through how she worked through the lies she believed about herself, how she identified where she put her worth & the steps she took to ultimately find freedom, joy, and fully acceptance in Christ.

Notes:

If you find yourself stumped by the question, “where does your worth come from? I challenge you to:

  1. IDENTIFY THE LIES: Take some time, reflect & identify the lies - What lies do you believe about yourself? What lies do you believe about God? Example - God doesn’t really care about me. God doesn’t really know me. I am not worth love… etc.
  2. LEARN THE TRUTH OF WHO GOD IS: Take it upon yourself to understand who God/Christ really is. Not just what you may have heard, or what others have said, OR what others have represented for you, BUT get to know God/Christ on your own terms. (For example - f you don’t know who God is or understand His character then it doesn't really matter if he loves you.)
  3. REMIND YOURSELF OF WHAT GOD SAYS ABOUT YOU: Now that you’ve begun to understand who Christ is, you can begin to learn and take in all the beautiful things He says about you. Once you know His true character, the things He did for you will mean so much more!

** If something on today’s episode challenged you or has made you ask some questions… GOOD - we want to know them! We want nothing more than to help you know the One True God and to understand how loved, valued, and worthy you are. Please reach out to us - we would love to chat and help however we can!

We were created to be in a relationship with one another. In the beginning, God created Adam and then realized that it wasn’t good for man to BE ALONE! It is in our nature to want to be desired and pursued and seen and loved by others!

What would it look like if we intentionally, each day, put our relationship with Christ FIRST? How would it affect our lives? How would our relationships here on earth be affected?

In this week's episode, we chat with Katherine Healy. She is a neon flashing billboard sign for God’s goodness & is passionate about living life in a relationship with Christ.

We talk about what it means to be ‘in a relationship with God - how pausing, slowing down & reflecting on what Jesus has to say about us will lead us to the ultimate ‘relationship goals.”

Go on a date with God. Do it every day! Let him blow your mind!

It is so easy to put our worth, value, and identity in the wrong things. Oftentimes without even knowing it. If we are honest with ourselves, we all do it, one way or another. Our minds think that "because we do this, then it means we are this..." OR "because we didn't do this, then we must be this." It's a constant roller coaster of lies.

In this week's episode, we talk about Denae Muller and how she had to find out the hard way that her worth had nothing to do with her ABILITY.

In her grade 12 year, something happened that drastically caused her life to come to a halt. Everything she knew and everything she planned had to change - and it was hard!

She shares so many incredible lessons learned, the hard prayers she prayed, and encouragement! Regardless of where you are in life or in your faith, you will take something away from this episode.

We want you to know that your WORTH has nothing to do with what you DO but has eventing to do with what Christ already did on the cross.

It's so easy to get caught up in all the things we want to DO for God. But what if we only desired to be like Enoch, and 'walk with God?'

In this week's episode, Courtney shares a talk that she gave to a group of high school kids about the difference between WORKING for God and just simply WALKING with Him.

Bible Verses Referenced:1. AcknowledgePsalm 100:3 - "Know that the Lord is God. It is He Who made us, and not we ourselves. We are His people and the sheep of His field."

John 3:16 - "For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son. Whoever puts his trust in God’s Son will not be lost but will have life that lasts forever."

The world around us is constantly telling us ‘who’ we are, and sadly we so easily believe it. We place our identity and worth in different things, like things we do, how well we do it, who are friends are, our achievements, where we live, and so on. It’s only when we turn to our creator and learn what He says about us, that our lives can drastically change and we discover our true identity.

On today’s podcast, we are joined by Tayler Jordan, daughter of Christ, founder of the B3 Tribe, fitness instructor, and advocate of God’s word! With a past in the professional body-building world, Tayler spent years letting judges determine her worth. It wasn’t until she was 27 after a life coach challenged her to open up the Bible and read it for herself that she began to see and understand WHO she really was.

Knowing how drastically her life was changed by reading the Bible for herself, Tayler talks with Courtney about how passionate she is for girls and women to read and learn the Bible on their own.

The Bible is not some complex,, outdated, boring history book - it is the most incredible love letter, full of truth, beautiful stories, challenges, grace, mercy, and freedom.

Courtney and Tayler talk about how reading the Bible on their own changed their life and showed them how loved, worthy, and valued they were! They realized their identity and purpose through God’s written word and they want nothing more than for everyone to experience what they have.

GIVEAWAY: Tayer is giving away a 1-month membership to the B3 Tribe to 2 lucky ladies! Share this podcast on social media or leave a comment for a chance to enter.

We understand that reading the Bible can be intimidating, confusing, and hard - and we want to help! Below are some of Courtney's favorite resources!

It’s easy to believe the lie that you need to ‘have it all together for God. So often we think we can’t be fully open, honest, and vulnerable with Christ but we couldn’t be more wrong! No one knows us better than the God that created us, and He wants nothing more than for us to come to Him with EVERYTHING - all the raw, real, hard, vulnerable stuff.

Today’s guest Tammy Peterside, spoken word artist and host of Glass Ceiling Chronicles Podcast, shares with us how being open and honest with Christ brings freedom, power, and healing. After her father passed away she began journaling, and as her broken, honest, feelings poured out onto the page, she began to experience Christ’s love unlike never before.

God is big enough for our questions - our hurt - our anger - our confusion, and our praise. He wants it all because he wants ALL of us, His children.

We pray this episode blesses you and challenges you to open up and be vulnerable with Christ! If you want to know more or talk further about what it means to 'be real' with Christ and how to do that, please reach out to show host, Courtney Reimer or Tammy. Their links are below

We are SO excited that Tammy will be one of the speakers at our SHE WEARS WORTH Conference, happening this fall, Oct 28th + 29th in Winnipeg. She will also be leading us in intentional journaling sessions. CLICK BELOW for tickets!

BIBLE VERSES:
Philippians 4:6-7
“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”

Psalm 46:5 “God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day”

Matthew 5:14-16 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

In today’s episode, Karli Quigley, lead singer of Bold As Lions, shares with us her journey with anxiety, how she’s learned to live with it, and how she refuses to let it define her.

If you are between the ages of 10 and 100 there is a good chance that you have experienced anxiety once, twice, or too many times to count. Whether it is nerves before a big test or a crippling feeling that causes physical side effects, anxiety is very real and affects the majority of our population in some form.

If you have ever struggled with anxiety, this episode is for you. Our hope through this conversation is that you can learn that anxiety or mental health does NOT get to define you. Your identity -- your value -- your worth, is not tied to your anxiety. You are worthy and loved by Christ, and nothing can change that!

We are so excited that Karli will be one of our speakers at the SHE WEARS WORTH Conference this Oct. 28th + 29th in Winnipeg! Get your tickets below!
