My experience has shown me that the majority struggle or even lack very important skills to manage their emotions. In this video, you will learn what three major skills you need to work on in order to become someone who is able to lead yourself and others.

The enemy of your effectiveness and productiveness seems to be procrastination.

It’s the thing that holds you back and keeps you from progressing. It's like fighting an invisible person that wants to keep you right where you are.

Procrastination is – to put it very simple – conscious delay of something that needs to be done, even though you know the delay can cause a negative result.

In this episode you will learn about:

  • The causes of procrastination
  • How to increase your motivation & productivity.

If you want to effectively work on decreasing procrastination in your life, feel free to contact me.

I love to help leaders and entrepreneurs to step into their purpose, create the life they truly want and live a lifestyle that is in alignment with you!

Boundaries are something that blows the mind of many people - because most of the time they either don't respect them or they don't have them. It is important to understand that boundaries are actually your friends! It is extremely important to learn to befriend them!

Indeed, many people do not have healthy boundaries - due to cultural and sociological expectations. e.g. not being "able" to send someone away even though they ignored all social cues that indicated it's bad timing and visited you unannounced anyhow.

Some people are extroverts, others ambiverts and other introverts. Therefore, some love to socialize, others don’t and for ambiverts, it at all depends on their situation.

Even small children are often forced to interact with others if they want to or not. They have to give a hug or shake hands as a sign of respect, even though they don't understand that yet. It is expected of them to violate their own boundaries in order to please adults. That is something that sticks with them for a lifetime if not unlearnt at some point. How to prevent it? Well if the child says no, respect it. You could ask the child if it wants to shake hands, wave or just say bye. The child learns to be polite without having to violate personal boundaries.

As you can see bending your own boundaries to please others is a very common thing that is taught. Therefore, learning healthy boundaries is for the majority very difficult and challenging. Boundaries can have different forms and contexts. There are physical boundaries, mental boundaries, emotional boundaries, professional boundaries and so on. e.g. You are not responsible for every aspect of your employee's life! They are responsible for their marriage. They are responsible for their kids. You can create a work environment that is making sure that your employees don’t work overtime, but what your employees do in their free time WITH their free time is their responsibility.

In this podcast you will get to know the answers to the following questions:

Why do we need healthy boundaries?

What kind of issues can unhealthy boundaries cause?

What do we need to internalize about healthy boundaries in order to step out of unhealthy patterns?

How do you implement healthy boundaries?

If you want to improve the quality of your life through healthy boundaries, feel free to contact me! I am happy to help you understand where you are at and how you can improve the boundaries in your life! I would love to help you!

Is this you: You hear the word change and you feel already uncomfortable and worried?

Or does this sound more familiar: You hear the word change and get excited and eager?

Interestingly, even if the change is something you really like it is not always as easy as you think. And even if you don’t like change does that not mean that you are condemned to always have negative experiences with change.

That is why I prepared something, especially for you on how to cope with change, no matter what your starting point is.

First of all, it is helpful to understand change itself better:

  1. So many forms of change

  2. Negative – Loss of loved one, separation, loss of job, etc

  3. Positive – Move, wedding, birth, new job,
  4. Sudden – shock, drastic, usually no preparation, etc
  5. Expected – anticipated, maybe eagerly awaited, prepared, action plan ready, etc.

  6. Facts about change

  7. Requires adjustments

  8. Too much at once?
  9. Good change can cause stress too
  10. Can increase anxiety, depression etc, because of the negative emotions caused by stress
  11. Increased tiredness or hyperactivity, Sleeping problems, irritability, etc

  12. Solutions

  13. Positive self-talk:

  14. Visualization
  15. Take care of the things you CAN control or influence
  16. Acknowledge change
  17. Try to keep as much of your regular schedule or daily routine as possible
  18. Pay attention to your physical health (nutrition, hydration, exercise)
  19. Seek support
  20. Proactive activities to prevent reactive coping mechanisms
  21. Train stress resilience to prevent reactive behaviour
  22. Relaxation (swimming, dancing, reading (light books), meeting uplifting friends, sleeping, etc

If you want to have practical help and professional support in your time of transition and change, then feel free to contact me for a free consultation to see how I can serve you in your particular situation best.

STAYING TRUE TO YOURSELF

Are you living what others expect of you? Are you trying to achieve what the current trend demands? Are you compromising as a leader a lot just to see fast success?

You see plenty of people online who talk about how they quit their 9-to-5 and started their own thing. It often even sounds like having a so-called „regular“job is something bad or not desirable.

You maybe see people who have a 9-to-5 job and they make much more money than someone who started their own business and can go home after work and not feel stress or pressure about what all still needs to be done.

You have all these pictures and ideas in your head about how people say life should be and with all these voices in your head, you have to make a choice! A choice about your profession, your future, your development.

First of all, do you know your values, beliefs and worldview? Do you know what kind of lifestyle you want to live? If you are still in the process of figuring that out, then that’s totally fine. Invest in your self-awareness. Grow in who you are and what you think and what you are passionate about. You may not know yet what lifestyle you want in 10 years, but you most likely know what lifestyle you want right now!

As a leader, entrepreneur and simply human being, it is important to understand who you are in order to make sound choices. Too many opinions, trends and thoughts about success are out there! However non of these will lead you to the life you really long for IF they are not in agreement with your core values, worldview and the lifestyle you truly long for!

In this episode, you will find out what makes being true to yourself so important and how you can take steps to live up to YOUR standards and dreams instead of following some trend!

In today's significant world, everyone wants to have success. How success looks like varies from person to person. But for everyone, there is a significant key element that needs to be worked on in order to actually experience success. The mindset! In today's episode, you will realize the significants and power of your mind and how you can work on your mindset!

What is the mindset?

  • It is how you view and perceive the world and how you make sense of everything around you and within yourself. Your mindset influences your thoughts, emotions, behaviour and so on.
  • our mindset will decide to some extent your future
  • It kind of describes how you walk through life: are you seeing only threats and issues or do you see potential? Do you see problems as a challenge or as an unchangeable factor that condemns you to failure? Do you focus on the disadvantages or the opportunities?

Fixed Mindset: You think that everything is already set in stone - "fixed". e.g. You are never getting a better job. You cannot get better at your skills. You cannot learn skills that are very challenging.

Growth Mindset:

  • The most successful people are those who have a growth mindset
  • Through time and effort, it is possible to learn new and challenging things
  • Approaching life and your future by focusing on the potential, strength and options rather than dwelling on all that could go wrong is so important if you want to see progress and growth.
  • That's why some people consider the growth mindset and positive mindset as the same thing or as strongly connected - at the very least!
  • A positive mindset focuses on the solutions, not the problems.
  • Converting setbacks into future success

The mind is in a constant battle between focusing on whats lacking or on all the potential.

The goal is to teach your mindset to be by default a positive/ growth mindset.

Self-awareness plays a key role in developing such a mindset.

Every time you get out of your comfort zone and learn something new or face diffícult situations properly your neurons can form in your brain new connections and therefore you learn something new. (Neuroplasticity)

How can you train a mindset that leads to success?

  • Ask the right questions.
  • Use the GROW Model
  • Practice the ABCDE Model
  • Add the word "yet", when you can't do something or you face challenges.

Do you want to improve your mindset and therefore experience more positivity, growth and success in your life? I am happy to help you!

Are you reacting or are you responding? Who has control over you, the emotions, behaviour and words of others or you? In today's episode, we will dive deeper into self-regulation and self-control. And of course, I will give you some tools at hand to navigate yourself better.

Reacting

  • Giving others power over you
  • Blaming others for your behaviour
  • Lack of self-control and self-regulation

Responding

  • Taking ownership of your part in interpersonal connection
  • Taking responsibility for your behaviour
  • Using self-regulation and self-control

Self-regulation and self-control both have to do with handling emotions and reactions and responses. Some might consider them synonyms. However, there are distinctions in the use.

Self-regulation is a preventative approach, and self-control is more about controlling your emotions and situation when it got already out of hand or are overwhelming you. Either one is not to be confused with suppressing emotions. Self-control puts a lot of focus on willpower. Self-regulation itself focuses more on identifying and than either reducing or getting rid of the causes or impulses. In short: self-regulation focuses more on making sure that a situation or circumstances don't overwhelm you in the first place or on how to handle stressful and challenging circumstances without being overrun by emotions.

Tools to increase self-regulation and self-control skills:

  • Assessing the situation - Confirming & Clarifying if you understood right – Communicating your position or boundary.
  • Regular breathing exercises and some calming forms of meditation
  • Take care of your physical health, because that will directly impact your mental state. A stable mind supports your ability to self-control.
  • Pursue self-awareness: Understanding yourself, triggers, causes, etc. will help you face such specific situations and triggers calmer and with a sound mind.
  • Find an accountability partner. That can be a friend, a coach or a mentor who will check in on you and ask you the hard questions about how you handle yourself and necessary changes.

Authentic leadership is definitely something many leaders, who want to create a powerful impact, seek to implement. In this episode, you will learn more about authentic leadership and why it is so attractive.

  1. What is authentic leadership?

· An authentic leader is someone who is aware of their own deficits and shows a great willingness to learn

· Being genuine looks different from person to person! You are unique!

· Most people connect with authentic leadership "integrity"

· Not pretending to be something or someone they are not

· Keeping focused on the long-term goal instead of short-term success. In a fast living and demanding world as we live in today quite a big pressure point. Authentic leaders are not static or stiff, but strategic people. They keep their eye on what outcome is desired, more impactful and useful for the team in the long run.

· Multiplication is essential.

· Taking ownership of mistakes makes the difference.

· Creating rapport and trust

· Willingness to question status quo

· Standing in the gap for your team

· Adaptability

  1. What makes it so attractive?

· Be aware: It does not mean that you need to do a soul striptease in front of your whole team, like showing your deepest fears, private problems, etc.! Healthy personal and professional boundaries are a must for a healthy functioning team and leadership.

· Being authentic means that you are approachable instead of acting and leading as if you are a god or a king.

· It is not about being egocentric, self-centred, and self-absorbed… on the contrary. authentic leadership brings balance to the team, the goal and oneself!

  1. What do you need to learn to be an authentic leader?

· Understand yourself: weaknesses, strengths, core values, etc. and own up to your weaknesses, failures and challenges. People know when you are pretending to be something you are not.

· Invest in your Emotional Intelligence!

· Create a healthy feedback culture

· Be teachable and open to receiving feedback. If there needs to be a solution to a problem and a team member had an idea that would solve it, then don’t let your ego get in the way. Give CREDIT to that person

· Listen well to the ideas and suggestions of others. It does not mean that you have to do everything that others suggest, but it means to give it genuinely a thought. Don’t ask for the feedback and idea of others if it's already set in stone what's going to happen.

· Lead by example: The same standards, values, expectations, etc you have towards your team, you should own up to too. That means: you expect respectful interactions, then be respectful to all your staff or team members, from the cleaning personnel and intern to the CEOs and Shareholders

What every leader should know is how to create and live interpersonal connections effectively! It is of utter importance – especially for leaders! That’s why today you will get to know what interpersonal effectiveness is and I will hand you three guidelines that will help you improve your skills.

What exactly is Interpersonal Effectiveness?

It summarizes the skills we need to attend relationships successfully:

The ability to meet your own needs while maintaining healthy relationships and self-respect!

e.g. At work, it would help create efficient interactions with, staff, employees, colleagues etc.

What we need to keep in mind is that the ideal is to accomplish all three. However, there will be situations when you will need to choose one over the other.

What can be common causes of having trouble executing interpersonal effectiveness?

  • Lack of skills in interpersonal effectiveness: not knowing how to apologize
  • Emotions – anger causes escalation of conflict
  • Indecisiveness & ambivalence: sending mixed signals due to your confusion about what you want
  • Short-term goals distract you from long-term goals

1. "Objective Effectiveness": the ability to clearly state your needs and wants and to have a satisfactory outcome of interactions. A question that can help you is: What do you want as an outcome from the interaction & how can you achieve that?” The acronym DEAR MAN presents a guide on how to accomplish that.

  • Describe
    • Express
    • Assert
    • Reinforce
    • Mindful
    • Appear
    • Negotiate

2. Relationship Effectiveness: Maintaining and nourishing the relationship through positive interactions. A question that can help you is: How do you want others to feel about you after the interaction & how can you achieve that? The acronym GIVE will show you how to put this into practice.

  • Gentle
  • Interested
  • Validate
  • Easy

3. Self-respect Effectiveness: Staying faithful to your own beliefs, standards and values! Living and acting on your own self-respect. Treating yourself with respect will enable you to accept the respect of others. The main questions are: How do you want to feel about yourself after the interaction & how can you achieve that? You will find the acronym FAST useful.

  • Fair
  • Apologies
  • Values
  • Truthful

Have a look at each domain and acronym. Assess yourself via a scale 1-10 (1= lowest): How satisfied are you with your performance in F, A, S, T and overall in self-respect effectiveness. Then you start actively working on the area(s) where you observe a lack in skill. Don't work on it all at once. Target the one that seems to be the most relevant. Give yourself enough time and patience to work on it.

Check out my blog to have another look at the interpersonal effectiveness: https://www.refractioncoaching.com/post/how-you-can-be-more-effective-in-interpersonal-connections

Self-awareness is an essential part of Emotional intelligence and therefore essential for you as a leader!

Did you know that a study by Eurich in 2008 has shown that 90% of people think they are self aware, however only 10-15% of them demonstrated true self-awareness. That lets us wonder "Are we truly self-aware?" and "What can be done to grow in self-awareness?".

Investing in your self-awareness will keep a more realistic perspective on yourself and your enviornment.

Therefore in this episode we will look into the unique power of self-awareness and how you can improve it!
